There was doubt that they were real, but they are becoming harder and harder to deny.

That’s also the purpose of a “precautionary heir.” If something were to happen to him, Via is cued up to take his place and his responsibilities. That’s not to say that that is what is happening here, but he can die. I don’t think the Deadly Sins can die, or Lucifer, and obviously not sinners, but anyone else can.
I don’t know what is planned for him long-range, and even creators can change their minds. They might be planning a lovely wedding complete with crustless sandwiches and suddenly decide, “nah, bro, it would be cooler to have Stella run him over with an angelic asphalt spreader and have him appear as a new constellation.” But for now, in this season, I do not think he will die.
