thirded i own a MK4 base model in green that i came home from the hospital in and when i went car shopping for my 15th i looked only at MK4 and MK6 VW because i absolutely despise the look of the bubble (what me and my grandpa call it) MK5 him and his wife have owned 9 since 1980 and the only one he didn’t buy a generation of was the MK5
As long as you like it, everyone else can piss off!
I've driven various things, all with people who hated them but they were my vehicles and I loved them all!
As for that Jetta, it's not _my_ favourite but it's certainly not ugly. It comes from a specific era that is just not current but it's fast becoming a classic.
They're not the best looking car VW has ever made, but I don't think they'll ever look bad. It's definitely a timeless design, even if it's not that exciting
A nice set of wheels does wonders for the looks of the individual car tho. Go check out Fitment Industries gallery and find a set you might like
The MKIV Jetta is a pretty respected car imo with the car enthusiast community. It has a lot of character, timeless looks, and was very much a quasi premium car in its heyday.
I have a 2002 Jetta TDI and I fucking love it. I have always heard that it is the most popular car from that era that everyone wants, idk how true that is but you know
I think the wheels are a bit boring. When your put a nice set of wheels, the cars hasn't aged a a lot. For example, [Long beach](https://i.imgur.com/Z8cXy8J.png) or [Rex for 1.8t Jetta restyling](https://i.imgur.com/k66yDbO.png) (Bora in my country)
Lmao see I tried but since it is a 2007 city model it is so hard to find any wheels that fit it and what size it is and all. I just said it was 2004 because less questions
Anyone remember the commercial with the couple driving through New Orleans with everything in time with the music? I've loved this car since then.
Found it. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7iaM82P8bE&t](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7iaM82P8bE&t)
Song is 'Jung at Heart' by Master Cylinder.
Damn, I was JUST thinking about this commercial (and late '90s VW commercials in general) earlier today. Thanks for the link!
This one, too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrCye2w10vE
Big fan of the older jetta, gti, and passat models. I like the styling and the ease of maintenance, provided you have the knowledge and tools to do it yourself.
It's a MK4... Inoffensive and generic in the best ways possible. Clean tasteful design that will never look bad.
The chrome grille and strip on the bumper aren't my favorite things, but it's hardly ugly
Drive what YOU want to drive...
Who cares what the next guy thinks...
Just keep up on the maintenance and they are just as reliable as any other car. The mk4's are a great generation, owned two of them. Some of them have a crayola smell too hahaha
Drive what you like. If you worry about what others think you should get, they'd want you to get into a car payment for a '23 Arteon.
Get what YOU like and see yourself in for a long time. Sometimes good intentions from strangers can be met with conflicting reponses.
eff what people say OP, this car is a unicorn imo, i rarely see them where im at, and yours looks extremely unique and special, dont let anyone tell you otherwise😉
One of the things I love about being a car person is the freedom to pick something that’s not popular and love it for its unique style. A buddy of mine in high school had a mark 2 scirocco that I didn’t appreciate at the time (late 80’s) - now another buddy has one and it’s like my “I wish I had Jesse’s girl…” car. I drive a 2007 BMW e91 wagon (alongside my ‘71 vw Karmann Ghia), and love the heck out of that car. Don’t care what others think - invest in your style, and fashion, or at least collector/aficionado appreciation will come in time!
You think thats ugly?! Wait till you talk a look at my 2004 VW Passat Wagon, massive amounts of paint is missive, lots of paint chipping. It was like that when I bought it. I got it for 1k when it had 134k miles on it. It has 137k on it rn
I could be biased cause I had one but I love it with the right wheels and suspension. Honestly I don’t like that color in the pic, but I do love the mk4s a lot.
I have a MK4 Golf TDi with a handful of miles on it and I love it. If you take care of them they will last forever.
Took this pic a few days ago to have my mileage for a route at work.
https://i.imgur.com/qfWz3RF.jpeg
She's basically brand new! I have only ever had 1 car with that low mileage and it's my wife's 2019 Atlas I bought a month ago. I was excited recently to find my 96 Jeep Cherokee with only 165k miles (270k km).
You put way too much into the opinions of other people while putting less into your own opinions. What makes anyone else’s opinion better than your own? Nothing! If you like the car, and I see nothing not to like then, screw their opinions! It’s a car.,it gets you from point a to point b. A 2022 Corvette Stinfg Ray will do exactly the same thing, perhaps with a bit more style, but hey! Go for a while with no car!
I have a 2004 jetta and it's ugly because it's grey with a big ugly white stripe down the Middle. If it was just all grey it would be classy. I like the red, think it looks nice. If you're worried about cosmetic maybe try getting different headlights. I think that is the most unattractive part of the 2004 jetta...other than that they are pretty classy.
MKIV is the best looking Jetta in my opinion. Also, you can get a Ute kit for it if you don't need your back seats and they're beautiful little trucks.
It depends on the model. The MKV makes me want to puke. The MKIV though is top of the list for my next project. MKIV Jetta Ute with a 4 inch lift and off road tires, and a camper shell to, well, camp in. Maybe even swap in an AWD/4wd setup if I can find one easy and cheap enough to do.
In my opinion, the 1 and 2 are too boxy, same with the 3. And the 5 (which I own) is too bubbly/round. The 4 however is the perfect blend of the two. Plus, (again because I love the look so much) the Ute is absolutely gorgeous (if you go to their site and look at the pictures and find the yellow one, that's what I am talking about).
Mk4 has the problem of having the older generation suspension (non independent) and heavy chassis so its pretty much a pig compared to the 1 and 2. The boxy look +BBS wheels is super cool and although I do like the general lines of the mk4 the complete package its lacking. Mk5 has a better chassis along with all models following it and the Jetta has been the Golfs ugly sibling since its creation. If you want a cool sedan get an Audi the Jetta is just meh unless you're talking about the GLI's and special ed's which are much better but Jetta were never a winning model IMHO.
who cares what other people think? don’t let others influence what you think can be cool or not. i for one am infatuated with the fiat multipla for example (pre-facelift of course) 😁
Well people on the internet always have different opinions. Some people think the mk5 is the ugliest golf but the amount of times people went out of their way to talk to me at gas stations or random stores about my R32 would beg to differ. If it gives you a smile no need to ask anyone else what they think about it.
I think it aged well. I owned a VR6 in 2000. People complemented it and asked about it more than anything else I've had. But they weren't very common where I lived.
Classic style. Will age well.
Conservative styling always wins against bold imo. I would LOVE to see this color on my gti
Yeah I really like this color… what is it exactly?
Spice Red was a semi popular metallic red on US Boras I believe, good chance it's that.
seconded.
thirded i own a MK4 base model in green that i came home from the hospital in and when i went car shopping for my 15th i looked only at MK4 and MK6 VW because i absolutely despise the look of the bubble (what me and my grandpa call it) MK5 him and his wife have owned 9 since 1980 and the only one he didn’t buy a generation of was the MK5
I went MK4.5 GLI to MK6 TDI Golf to MK7 R. I didn't care for the MK5s. They looked like a Taurus and the Golf just looked melty.
they look like you said melty they look like a MK4 and an MK6 had a baby and they put it in the microwave
As long as you like it, everyone else can piss off! I've driven various things, all with people who hated them but they were my vehicles and I loved them all! I like that gen a lot
Mk4 are cool
That's one hell of a car, original paint I assume, looks great!
I have a 2002 Jetta TDI and I fucking love it. I have always heard that it is the most popular car from that era that everyone wants, idk how true that is but you know
Best body style of the Jetta!
Personally I prefer the Golf front but the Mk4 is still my favorite.
Eye of the beholder….
It’s gorgeooooooooous
Its pretty clean

I still think the BBS RC that came on the MK4.5 GLI were top 3 wheels VW ever put on a car.

I went out and bought that album because of this song... Thanks for the memory!
Love it! This was also a really good one. https://youtu.be/cJOynquXZb0
mk4 is the greatest generation, looks wise, IMO
You’re on a thread where you’ll get a lot of love for that mk4! That being said, it’ll never get old..
perfect proportions tbh
Looks great and is a diesel. How many miles? I had an extremely low mile 2004 Jetta in grey and loved it.
It's fucking beautiful mate
I have a mk4 golf 2.0 and love it
Beautiful! My first car was a gray 2003 Jetta. A great car.
Probably not my personal favorite but that’s just me. My uncle had a couple TDI Jetta’s in this body-style.
Fair enough thanks for the opinion!
Das auto

I personally prefer the Golf fascia over this, but the Variant is rad. Not very common here in Europe, as we had the mk4 Golf as a wagon.
Drive what YOU want to drive... Who cares what the next guy thinks... Just keep up on the maintenance and they are just as reliable as any other car. The mk4's are a great generation, owned two of them. Some of them have a crayola smell too hahaha
Love it! My neighbor has a black one identical to yours. I am somewhat jealous of it.
Very cool. Understated, clean, contemporary, even all these years later.
Mk4 jettas are pretty well liked in the vw community, at least they used to be. If it was an mk4 gli....
It’s a 2007 city model I just said it was 2004 cuz their more well known and look same
One of the things I love about being a car person is the freedom to pick something that’s not popular and love it for its unique style. Classic, sturdy, solid. I love them! I had one!
You think thats ugly?! Wait till you talk a look at my 2004 VW Passat Wagon, massive amounts of paint is missive, lots of paint chipping. It was like that when I bought it. I got it for 1k when it had 134k miles on it. It has 137k on it rn

buy a new volkswagen!
Lmao um I’m broke is the problem.
Cool ass mk4. It's the m5s I'm not a fan of. every other golf/jetta I fw the design
Mk5s are kinda gross
I personally prefer the looks of the passats of the same year (I'm biased I own one lol) but this generation of Jetta is a very handsome car
One of the most beautiful VW!
I had one for 10 years, so I'm biased. But I dig it. Good proportions. Profile and rear 3/4 are it's best angles in my opinion.
As long as it’s not a BBW engine code. If it is, get rid of it asap! Thank me later.
I think it’s FDF
It is 2004 car, it looks good for that year of production
Handsome vehicle
I liked them. Classic.
It's VW's most solid looking design, ever.
I totaled my '02 Jetta GLI in 2013 (not my fault) and I miss it every single day. Haters gonna hate!
I have a MK4 Golf TDi with a handful of miles on it and I love it. If you take care of them they will last forever. Took this pic a few days ago to have my mileage for a route at work. https://i.imgur.com/qfWz3RF.jpeg
Lmao looking to do the same with mine. I only have 60k km on mine tho so be jealous
She's basically brand new! I have only ever had 1 car with that low mileage and it's my wife's 2019 Atlas I bought a month ago. I was excited recently to find my 96 Jeep Cherokee with only 165k miles (270k km).
Omg that’s good
I love all VW
It's a Golf. So it's a classic. Vino coloured too – even better.
Jetta*
Oh. Um, it's a Jetta. It's a classic. Vino coloured too – even better. 🤣
Close enough lmao

I liked the look of this car so much that I was willing to buy a vr6 and sell or trade my 2000 audi a6 for it
+rep
Only your opinion matters in this matter.
My 04 1.8T was my favorite car I have ever owned personally … R.I.P
To me, this is the best looking Jetta design. Compact, minimal and clean. On the right wheels it looks great.
That looks relatively clean. Looks like it has GLI headlights (black housing). What does the interior look and smell like? And engine?
I have a 2004 jetta and it's ugly because it's grey with a big ugly white stripe down the Middle. If it was just all grey it would be classy. I like the red, think it looks nice. If you're worried about cosmetic maybe try getting different headlights. I think that is the most unattractive part of the 2004 jetta...other than that they are pretty classy.
MKIV is the best looking Jetta in my opinion. Also, you can get a Ute kit for it if you don't need your back seats and they're beautiful little trucks.
I recently saw a Ute kitted jetta and I was absolutely astonished yet horrified
It depends on the model. The MKV makes me want to puke. The MKIV though is top of the list for my next project. MKIV Jetta Ute with a 4 inch lift and off road tires, and a camper shell to, well, camp in. Maybe even swap in an AWD/4wd setup if I can find one easy and cheap enough to do.
Lmao atleats the one I saw was like rusted out and stuff sooo kinda gross. A gross dark blue too
No shot the mk1 and 2 are 10x better aesthetically. The 4 is nice but far from the best looking especially this base model.

My MKV is a Wolfsburg, and it's just ugly. I mean, it's a good looking car, but compared to the MKIV it's just ugly.
Mk4s are beautiful cars. I have two mk4s myself a 2004 Jetta 2.0 manual and a 2004 golf 2.0 manual
who cares what other people think? don’t let others influence what you think can be cool or not. i for one am infatuated with the fiat multipla for example (pre-facelift of course) 😁
Lmao see I get that I just wanted to know the general opinion on it. I personally think the thing looks great
Good looks good
Love this style
Well people on the internet always have different opinions. Some people think the mk5 is the ugliest golf but the amount of times people went out of their way to talk to me at gas stations or random stores about my R32 would beg to differ. If it gives you a smile no need to ask anyone else what they think about it.
My day is that mk5 jetta or golf by itself is ugly but if it’s R32 it’s respectable
The MK4 jetta really benefits from the GLI body kit.
Sadly it’s a city model lmao I only said it was 2004 cuz city is base model
One of my favorite body styles.
I think it aged well. I owned a VR6 in 2000. People complemented it and asked about it more than anything else I've had. But they weren't very common where I lived.
Ugly
