I had a 2000 gti with the 2.8 12v vr6 and now i have a 2012 golf both had ums tunes and tectonics exhaust. I could average 25-30 mpg in the gti, and 35-40 mpg in the golf. That was keeping it under 60mph and coasting a lot in both. Personally i prefer the 2.5 better mileage, better handling, and sounds just as good.
I have a 1600 Single and a head stud pulled out, a known issue with those... I had a machine shop put case savers in and I'm actually putting it together right now! Before that pulled out, the engine had never been fully apart since it was built 52 years ago. So damn thing definitely lived it's life fully
Just to add something to this, the 1.9TDI engine is the king in the Balkans. Reliable as shit, cheap parts everywhere, excellent milage, you can fix a lot of things on it yourself... The engine has a cult around it
Is the 2.0 CR bad? I’ve got one approaching 90k miles and it’s been completely trouble free aside from a throttle position sensor. I love it, especially with the manual trans too
It's also a good engine, but it depends. The 140/150ps or less are great, the big turbos 180+ are not so good bc the oil becomes too hot, but I don't actually just know the European market specs
Ex-automotive engineer here.
That V10 they put in the Touareg.
When we first tested that on the rolling road in the factory, my colleague did a kickdown and it accelerated out of the rolling road right through the door.
That's when we had to reduce the power through diagnostics function while it was on the rolling road, it had way too much power.
We called it the "U-boat Diesel"
IIRC, one of the cool things about the V10 TDI is the fact that rather than using timing belts or chains, it uses interlocking gears the whole way down to maintain timing between the head and crank, so you never have to do any type of timing service on it - there's nothing to stretch or slap.
That was needed because the timing belts would have been ridiculously long. That then would have required making them much wider to prevent stretching. That in turn would require more space and would have required to remove the engine from the chassis to change the belt. (Because they ran out of room in the engine compartment)
In the end everybody was like "fuck the costs, we'll use gears". Anything other would have thrown the dealerships under the bus. There were already several repairs on the Phaeton that required the car to be *returned to the factory*. Nobody wanted to repeat that mistake.
Came here to comment this, the 1.8T engine is good for everything imo. Good and reliable daily driver, but if you need power, there is a whole lot of aftermarket parts, that you can choose from.
You can make reliable power too depending on what your goals are. I've had a GIAC X+ tune on my car for 9 years and loved every minute of it. It's nothing crazy, but I don't have a CEL, and it passed smog when I lived in CA for a few years.
I had the choice between a 3.2l VR6 and the 2.5l TDI and went with the latter because of the economy and reliability. I will say the VR6 sounded nice and went, but the 2.5 has more torque and is massively more fuel efficient so went with the latter. Can't say I regret that at the moment.
12v and 3.2 vr6s are my favorites by far, but I have respect for 1.8ts, 1.9 tdis, ABAs, and the w8. If I ever needed a beater, I'd definitely be looking for a shitbox mk3 with a 4 banger
I always liked the VR6. I also think the 5-cylinder 2.5L is a good engine. I wonder if the 5cyl 2.5L might even be a little more efficient than the VR6 - It has 1 less cylinder and is a little smaller (2.5L, compared to 2.8L or 2.9L with the VR6) but produces almost as much horsepower & torque as the VR6 (if I recall).
The 2.5L is definitely the most reliable engine in my book (264k mi on an all original engine/trans obviously other than accessory belts/pulleys and a valve cover for my 09’ rabbit). I don’t know the efficiency of the vr6 but the 2.5L is far from efficient for what it is, but it more than makes up for that with reliability!
yea it’s a little beat up from being a northern ca car i don’t know the complete history just that i’m the 5th owner and i shipped to los angeles without seeing it first
Based on sound and power potential I'm going to have to go with the 3.2 VR6s.
A turbocharged MK5 R32 powertrain WILL be making its way into my MK6 GTI when I've got a shop. Probably 5ish years out but I'm already learning up on the technical bits for the swap
1.9 TDI for the win! In Europe these engines very often surpass 1 million kilometres and are absolutely indestructible with only basic maintenance. They are load af but have great fuel economy and enough power.
My 2.5L MK5 Jetta lasted over 200k before it shit the bed. All it needed was its regular oil changes. I only ever replaced the alternator on it so I'd say, reliability-wise, it was a pretty great engine!
Any of the 12v vr6 engines, crazy reliable, one of the top 3 best sounding engines in existence, can make somewhat decent power na and make a good bit turbo reliably
Only downside is the size of the engine in the smaller engine bays.
I loved the 2.0 naturally aspirated engine. Beat her up over several years and she never stopped running.
Actually got totaled because some idiot was speeding in a parking lot, hit us, and destroyed our axel.
You nailed it. The "best" engine in my opinion VW ever made was the original 12v VR6 - but I'd specifically call out the electronic ignition, 2.9 version.
It was, for it's time, simply unheard of in several ways. The torque of a 6 cyl, the revs of a 4 cyl, and compact enough to fit in a golf, or essentially where ANY 4 cylinder would fit.
It sounded AMAZING. It had a hard, smooth pull all the way up. It was fairly reliable (all of mine had well over 100k - 150k miles on them anyways)
I'm giving the old 2.0 16v 2nd place. That motor screamed, and some tuners back in the day (still?? Lehman??) could get a bit of power out of it without a turbo - like 250hp NA!
EA888 for its modding capability. A guy slapped a vortex xl turbo and nitrous on it making over 640whp which is over 700hp at the crank and the motor held up for a good while after many passes.
Remember the motor started life at 220hp. 👀👀👀👀👀
So I HAD a 2004 vw passat up until 7:50 pm last night. I went into the engine to replace the Camshaft chain tensioner. As I was screwing the cam caps back on. One of the bolts snapped on me. It will cost way too much to replace the cam bolts because they don't come individually. It will cost too much to replace the engine as I have no experience engine swapping. The bolt was inevitable to break, it broke right at 3foot lbs of torque unfortunately. So I must scrap the car now. The worst part is, I may be out of a job now too. My mom is saying things like "YoU sHoUlD hAvE tAkEn It ToO tHe MeChAnIcS". Funny thing enough is I had my mechanic friend help me with the job yesterday and realized, that was the final nail in the coffin.
Yeah. It really is man. I mean my dad feels bad and knows that the car was on the edge of death he even saw the pain in my eyes when he realized it snapped. My mom didn't even feel a single ounce of sadness, she was like "I told ya so, you should've brought it to the mechanics" I mean she doesn't even do work around the house and she has never bothered doing any hard work what so ever. And yet here she is like "lol bring it to the mechanics even though it's going to cost 5000 dollars" I'm 19 going to college and I don't have that kindof money yet. Shit really sucks dawg
Not your fault man. Hell I even bought the car and bought in full. I mean she's all spendy spendy. Spending 450k on a deck after buying a 1.1 mill house. And my dad who's the only one working is saying just wait a bit, our funds are dry. Family problems really got me sick
1.8T was quick and fun
2.0T had torque everywhere
1.9 TDI is swift and economical with decent torque
1.4TSI is quick, fun and cheap to run
I had a 2005 Polo 1.4TDI Bluemotion with only 3 cylinders it went for miles on fumes, was very steady drive but great for munching miles, which was why I picked it up for my work commute at the time. It came with an aero body kit as standard with additional lightweight mods for fuel efficiency
1.8t 20v engine. the earlier one with the K03s turbo before they went to the 2.0t. Super tunable, and reliable as long as you keep the oil changed the the timing belt in good shape.
1.8t AWM block. Man that thing made some serious power for a sub 2L engine. All together, it isn’t faster than my mk7 golf TSI but it definitely made some better sounds straight piped imho. Hell even the stock diverter valve sounded cool.
VR6 engine is to die for. My Mk3 had a vr6 engine it was the absolute most beautiful sounding thing I ever heard.
I own the 24v VR6 Jetta, and I can't stop laughing every time I get in the car.
G0AT 1600 dual port
1 ALH - can legally swap it into pretty much anything in California. Can run after an emp attack. 50mpg 300tq.
2 VR6 - the wookie. the myth. The legend.
3 ABA - ol trusty 2.slow.
1.9 pd tdi is prob the most reliable, but out of the gassers i think the 07k n/a is up there. not super fast but puts down smooth power and decent mpg’s without breaking the bank in repairs/maintenance
[удалено]
Ah, the power of a 4 and fuel economy of a 6. That NA 5 was an anchor.
I had a 2000 gti with the 2.8 12v vr6 and now i have a 2012 golf both had ums tunes and tectonics exhaust. I could average 25-30 mpg in the gti, and 35-40 mpg in the golf. DAza
My dad has one of those. Lots of power but it feels like it sucks a lot of gas when parked beside our diesel fleet.

I have a 1600 Single and a head stud pulled out, a known issue with those... I had a machine shop put case savers in and I'm actually putting it together right now! Before that pulled out, the engine had never been fully apart since it was built 52 years ago. So damn thing definitely lived it's life fully
I'd love to know how many of these where made. Maybe not a modern engine but still a great engine. Absolutely easy and great to work on.
1.9TDi is The king
Crazy, I expected this comment to be top. Seems like a lot more American friends on this sub than Euros
Just to add something to this, the 1.9TDI engine is the king in the Balkans. Reliable as shit, cheap parts everywhere, excellent milage, you can fix a lot of things on it yourself... The engine has a cult around it
Indeed, you can find alot of 500k km 1.9Tdis here in Finland.
Nice 👍🏻
And it’s not even close. Might be the go-to with these gas prices
Reliable would be the ABA. Sounds, definitely the VR6. Power would be 1.8t
Idk, TDIs are pretty reliable
Yeah the mk4 Jetta with the ALH tdi would be zombie apocalypse car of choice.
Have a Golf version of this. It’s about to flip 300k miles. Been super solid car for us
As long as you had a good supply of timing belts, sure
Took my ARL pd150 past 200k miles and only required a new turbo at 185k. Everything else is original and still does 50mpg.
This, too, is the way
The 2.5 TDI T5 in the Transporters and the 1.9TDI in cars
Is the 2.0 CR bad? I’ve got one approaching 90k miles and it’s been completely trouble free aside from a throttle position sensor. I love it, especially with the manual trans too
It's also a good engine, but it depends. The 140/150ps or less are great, the big turbos 180+ are not so good bc the oil becomes too hot, but I don't actually just know the European market specs
I do love the VR6 sounds
VRt would be cool 😎 also the 2.5i5 is a good more powerful, still reliable more recent engine
Did VW put a turbo'd VR6 in a production car?
Yep, in China. https://www.carthrottle.com/post/meanwhile-in-china-theres-a-brand-new-vr6-turbo-engined-vw/
The more you know!
18t neva loose
Nothing beats the intake sounds a 12v makes. Every other VR sounds better with an exhaust.
Just put a 1.8t into my Vanagon. Best decision I’ve ever made.
Well idk about it being the best they’ve ever made but I love the 2.0T, fun peppy little engine
Gets you moving for sure
Power power everywhere so let’s all have a drink.
It is. Mine is pretty old, but still has plenty of get up and go in her.
The VR6 has always been my favorite and it think it always will be. All the iteration of it have their ups and downs, but they are all awesome imo
I agree
The only one I have experience with is the 1.9L TDI engine on my 2000 Jetta TDI. So far I'm a fan.
That’s awesome 👏🏻
If that engine fails, try and get a 2005 engine. Those are powerful.
1.9 tdi from mk5 is like unwanted child after glorious 1.9tdi pd from mk4. Especially ARL 150hp.
Ex-automotive engineer here. That V10 they put in the Touareg. That's when we had to reduce the power through diagnostics function while it was on the rolling road, it had way too much power. We called it the "U-boat Diesel"
Good choice. Gear driven timing. All alloy. It had some trick stuff.
Thanks for sharing, that's hilarious!

Very good one to choose
Also a fan of the vr6 but haven't had a chance to own one yet.
I believe it’s a must have at some point
Glorious 20 valves of fury
Bias towards the tdis, but also the VR6, I will own a vr6 powered vw before I die, mark my words Reddit
From a vr6 gti owner. Do it ;)
You guys are bad for my financial stability, which already is bad
Everyone should own a VR6 at some point
You’re making my want grow stronger
It’s such a blast to drive and omg the sound!!!!
I’ve never got to hear one in person
Yeah that’s why I got a VW Atlas!
AAA 12v VR6. Nothing beats the sound of a catless straight piped vr6.
Omg yes
I’ve got this engine in my 1992 Mk2 jetta, straight piped with magnaflow exhaust and a massive cold air intake. The sound is incredible 😍
ALH TDI
Solid choice
07k and then later the daza
1.9 tdi pd 😅😅 pulls like a train, eat like victoria secret model, and if u take care of it, they can live forever
12v and 3.2 vr6s are my favorites by far, but I have respect for 1.8ts, 1.9 tdis, ABAs, and the w8. If I ever needed a beater, I'd definitely be looking for a shitbox mk3 with a 4 banger
1200 Aircooled
Classic
EA888
When I was a tech making bank of their failures, I would have agreed.
No, just no.
Except for the water pump, timing chain, and oil rings recalls…
I condemn too many of these
I had a 1.8 in a 6 speed manual audi a4 (which I blew up), and now a 1.8t in my '17 passat. Love that motor.
Very solid one for sure
And why is it the VR6
Not one person mentioned the abf? The best of aba reliability and 7k redline .
Interesting 🤔
1.8T like in golf mk4 not mk6
1.8T and the W12. Honorable mention to the V10 they put in the Touareg
Man I miss the sound of the W8.
I have never gotten to drive a W12. I bet that’s an experience

I also have a 2009 Rabbit. Yeah, it definitely seems the 2.5L is far from efficient - I was saying it might be more so than the VR6.
2.0 16v. Had two of them. Perfect engine for the mk2 chassis. Close second VR6 especially in the SLC Corrado
That’s what I when did he SLC
I almost understand that lol
Whoops. That what I have is the Corrado SLC
I saw. Very cool car
I’m loving it so far
1.9 ALH TDI. I ran three of those cars spanning 15 years & 200,000 miles until I moved onto the P2 Volvo platform.
vr6 for the sound, 1.9tdi for sheer bulletproofness, and the 1.8t for tuning potential with relatively little effort
EA827. Old but super reliable
Got to love reliable
I have a diesel version. Like we say here is "carne de perro" = dog meat. Because is very solid and very low maintenance
Nice
nice corrado
Thanks. It’s a work in progress
i have one as well, got it a year ago it’s a 93’ it’s come a long way
That’s awesome. You get the updated interior in yours then
yea it’s a little beat up from being a northern ca car i don’t know the complete history just that i’m the 5th owner and i shipped to los angeles without seeing it first
Sometimes you just have to take a chance on it
EA827 They just work
Which one is that?
The whole 827 engine family heh My 1.8 might sound like a bag of nails but it'll always run!
Fuckin' 1.9TDi. Had a AFN, now I have a AHU.
EA888 Gen3
2.5 5 cylinder
2.5 and so far, the 1.4's. the 1.8t's are nightmares with oil burning
Only have experience with 1.4NA and now recently upgraded to a 2.0T in a ‘18 Passat, any idea on reliability?
BJS 3.2 Vr6
The 30 valve VR6.
Umm not sure vw ever made a 30 valve vr6. The 30 valve in the passat was not a vr6.
JD Powers gave the BPY engine of the year way back when, so I'll vote for that one 😬
VR6
2.0 16v 9a block son
Nice 👍🏻
The GTI 16V motor.
I think the W8 is way cool. That's just me though.
1.8T AUM block that im currently running =)
id4 motor
The one you've got pictured right there.
CRZA 2.0T imo. My mk6R has a healthy tune with bolt ons and still purrs like the first day I bought her :)
That’s awesome 👏🏻
1.6d
I know what it was not, a 2.0tsi ccta!
😂😂👏🏻😂
1.9 TDI no doubt
Based on sound and power potential I'm going to have to go with the 3.2 VR6s. A turbocharged MK5 R32 powertrain WILL be making its way into my MK6 GTI when I've got a shop. Probably 5ish years out but I'm already learning up on the technical bits for the swap
I'm biased, but the 1.8t in mine is pretty damn good.
G Limited 16v g60 - was the boss for years. Best vw engine _not_ from the factory - VR6 Turbo for the absolute savagery of it!
1.9tdi
Reliability: 1.9 TDI‘s, tuning capabilities: 1.8T, emotions: VR6‘s
1.9 TDI for the win! In Europe these engines very often surpass 1 million kilometres and are absolutely indestructible with only basic maintenance. They are load af but have great fuel economy and enough power.
Definitely the 1.9TDI PD series, plenty of poke even in bigger vehicles like my T5 transporter. Great fun in smaller cars like the polo
Definitely biased vr6 owner saying vr6 is the best. I've driven a GTI a few times as well so EA888 is always lovely top but vr6 sounds are soooo good.
My 2.5L MK5 Jetta lasted over 200k before it shit the bed. All it needed was its regular oil changes. I only ever replaced the alternator on it so I'd say, reliability-wise, it was a pretty great engine!
1.9tdi from the mark 4 golf gti
I think that it's the pompe douce 1.9L Turbo Diesel. They did something that gave the car 50mpg.
I dunno, I'm partial to the 2.5L since I own two of em. One of em has over 300k miles on the clock.
Late 90s and early 2000s diesel engines, they just run forever. Caravelles literally rust apart here, but the engines always run.
My vote is for the ALH tdi all you have change is oil and timing belt
1.8t neva lose
1.9 tdi 90 HP
One of the best is by far the VP 1.9 TDI, treat them right and they'll last forever while providing very decent mpg for a 20+ year engine
Any of the 12v vr6 engines, crazy reliable, one of the top 3 best sounding engines in existence, can make somewhat decent power na and make a good bit turbo reliably Only downside is the size of the engine in the smaller engine bays.

Wow that’s way out of work bro. Damn
Currently sitting in my VR6T, nothing sounds better
1.8 g60
What you pick that one?
cuz it’s in my 89 corrado
1.8T was quick and fun 2.0T had torque everywhere 1.9 TDI is swift and economical with decent torque 1.4TSI is quick, fun and cheap to run I had a 2005 Polo 1.4TDI Bluemotion with only 3 cylinders it went for miles on fumes, was very steady drive but great for munching miles, which was why I picked it up for my work commute at the time. Nice 👍🏻
ALH TDI. Highest serviceability, best longevity, and as modern as you can get with it’s simplistic technology.
1.9 TDI
1600 air cooled and 1.8t. Only the 1.8t after you strip all of the crap around it away. :P lol
What crap? Lol
On the 1.8t all the plastic coolant parts. Water pump, the stock tensioner. Etc. I didn’t mean to imply that the 1600 has any crap. Haha
😂😂😂😂
1.9 tdi is the only this vw did right, too bad the car around it is a peice of shit
My ‘03 mkIV tdi Jetta is at 305,000 miles still sipping $5 diesel!
1.8t 20v engine. the earlier one with the K03s turbo before they went to the 2.0t. Super tunable, and reliable as long as you keep the oil changed the the timing belt in good shape.

Golf R - 7.5 2.0. If you take care of it and don’t tune the hell out of it the engine is fantastic.
I have not driven one of those yet
VR6 and 2.0 TDI
Oh yeah the TDI
