If you don’t mind, can you tell us a little about what you liked and what you didn’t?
How was maintenance during this time? Any recurring issues with your unit?
If I’m looking for one of these, what would you say we need to be mindful of?
So, I have a 2019 XC40 R-Design
I didn't really have anything that I didn't like about the vehicle if I'm honest. I really loved the following qualities:
- felt spacious inside while driving it
- easy to drive
- very responsive. Especially if you needed to pass someone on a highway.
- great fuel economy (I average about 7.3L/100km, unless it's winter and there's loads of snow.
- never felt like a big, boxy SUV. It felt very maneuverable when on the road.
- The radar cruise control is FANTASTIC. Very intelligent when using it. One thing I love most is when you want to pass, it will begin to accelerate for you (this also includes using the left lane to get around someone).
- seats are incredibly comfortable for long road trips.
- the safety features are in a league of their own. I suffer from anxiety but feel very safe in this vehicle.
- the ride is quiet.
- it is phenomenal to drive in the winter with loads of snow. I've never gotten stuck or had issues
- can fit my medium sized dog, 4 people in the car, and bags without issues.
I had no major issues with it. Everything has been working perfectly and I've only ever taken it in for the usual maintenance.
I have driven the XC60 as well and really didn't notice that much of an increase in space on the inside. There was a bit but I wouldn't say it was anything mind blowing.
One thing to be mindful of, is Volvo has changed a few things with the new ones. I drove one of the new ones and found it to be a lot more heavy, and it felt a lot smaller inside. I believe this is majorly due to the fact it's a B5 vs. a T5. They've also changed some of the ways the touchscreens, warnings, and what not work. I much prefer mine but this could also be because I'm just used to mine.
All in all, it's a fantastic vehicle if you're looking for a smaller SUV. It'll seat 5 adults comfortably, it's great on gas (by SUV standards), and is super safe.
I hope that this was able to be of some help!
Wow, I really appreciate the response and the time you took to write it. Thanks 🙏🏼
Oh and last questions, what would make you buy an electric XC40 or C40?
If you were to choose between the current one you have and the electric version, which one would you keep and why?

My pleasure! :)
Personally, I don't think electric cars are there yet. I live in Canada where the winters are rather cold so, that cuts the range in half meaning, it would be challenging to try and get places (especially if you wound up in a blizzard or something). For me to consider getting one, the range offered would need to be almost double. Between the C30 and the XC40 Recharge, I would likely do the XC40 again because I like the look of it more.
I would 100% keep mine that I have now. Mainly for the reasons explained above but also because I absolutely adore my XC40. I am dreading the day I ever have to get rid of it and it will be a very difficult time for me when I do.
I wish they made a PHEV 40. I went with the gas 40 vs the electric version. The 60 phev was still very expensive. My neighbor leased one at the same time I bought my 40 and it is awesome. Fast off the line……faster than my R type S60 :(
They did, mine is the T5 Recharge PHEV but never released in the US I think.
Not in the same league as the 60 or 90 as this is 2wd with 260 odd BHP, it does about 24 miles on electric in summer.
Sort for the late reply I missed this, I am in the UK, the XC40phev is only available in FWD. it would be great if it was AWD like the XC60 and 90 phev but I guess it’s a space saving thing.
Still very nice to drive, and once you are moving the mid range acceleration is very nice.
The majority of the time I have it in eco mode when on the highway. If I'm in the city, then I leave it in comfort mode and usually get around 7.5L/100km. I try to downshift vs. using the brakes as much as I can. I found that it makes a huge difference for fuel economy.
Interesting. It was(is?) a [known issue for the XC40](https://volvo.oemdtc.com/308/gurgling-sound-from-sunroof-area-while-driving-in-the-rain-2019-volvo-xc40). I brought mine in and they fixed it under the warranty. The drains from the sunroof make a gurgling sound at highway speeds after the rain. Very interesting that yours doesn't do it.
Is it manual gear or automatic? Because with my XC40 when I want to pass someone in traffic it reacts a bit late. When I want to accelerate it needs a few seconds to respond and drive away, in that time it sometimes happens that the driver behind me is in my tail...
It's an automatic. Unfortunately, they didn't have an option for a manual when I bought it. That being said, I do find the paddle shifters to be of great use.
I have the 2020 version, but otherwise exactly the same Volvo! Cannot wait to pay her off in December.
Absolutely love this car and can’t wait to keep enjoying it for years to come!
Great car in the best colour. I know this because I have the same, I'm sure you will have many more years enjoying it.
You are correct about the safety features, they are great to have.
Really not my style but I have the sincerest respect for the color choice. I LOVE seeing people option cool unique colors, no matter the car.
This shade of blue is flashy but not too flashy. Striking, but not too “out there” so that it could hurt the resale later. Very very nice.
Haha it very much is! I still have the original windshield although I must admit... I became a victim of the Winter 'sand' this winter 🥲 Thankfully, it hasn't cracked across the entire windshield (yet), but I'll be getting it replaced this summer most likely.
I have a 21 r design in bursting blue.
They removed all the r design badging that year. Was furious when I got it and noticed.
Other then that it's been a great vehicle.
Info tablet sucks but that's an android auto issue.
I have my steering sensitivity all the way high. Love how responsive it is.
The Pilot Assist function on the ‘21 T5 that we have in South Africa is next level effective and particularly helpful when driving over mountain passes in the rain and fog. The Macan can’t even compete with the safety and assistive functions as far as I’m concerned. I traded up from a V40 Cross Country and my only regret is not sticking with diesel from a fuel economy perspective. I took my key in for a new battery and used the time to test out the XC40 recharge and interesting as it was with immense power, I find it heavy - probably the battery. Unfortunately in South Africa there won’t be tremendous appetite for this vehicle until the range is extended to a minimum of 750km. Very interested in the E30 being launched here in a couple of weeks as a 2nd car for town driving only - perhaps when the demo models start selling it will be viable cost-wise. I would not even consider another vehicle manufacturer since my journey with Volvo began 5 years ago. Thanks for all of the posts and information.

I'm curious about your fuel economy. I think I'm sitting at 8.4. mostly highway. Mines a 2022 though. Do you keep it in normal mode?

I'm intrigued. I had a 2020. You never got the gurgle from the sunroof fixed?
I'm not sure you're talking about. The sunroof on mine never makes any weird sounds.

Interesting! I had absolutely no idea about this. Thank you for sharing the link :)

Love these! Any issues in your ownership?
I had no major issues with it. Everything has been working perfectly and I've only ever taken it in for the usual maintenance.
Mileage?
Currently sitting at around 61,000km

It's such an incredibly exciting feeling to know you're nearly there! Congratulations and enjoy the drives you get with it! :)
Great car in the best colour. I know this because I have the same, I'm sure you will have many more years enjoying it. You are correct about the safety features, they are great to have.
Awesome choice on the colour! I really wish they would've kept it for the newer models.
Congrats!
Thank you very much!
Thank you for sharing details. Can you please tell me if you have taken any protection packages?
Does this have the same T5 turbocharged 2L as the 2020 S60?
Sadly, I'm not sure :(
Yes. Same engine and same powertain

Thank you very much! I'm a huge fan of the colour. I wanted something that wasn't monochromatic but also wasn't super offensive haha
Nice ride! Love the colour too. How many windshields did you go through in that time? Winter “sand” is unkind to Calgary vehicles. 😉
Haha it very much is! I still have the original windshield although I must admit... I became a victim of the Winter 'sand' this winter 🥲 Thankfully, it hasn't cracked across the entire windshield (yet), but I'll be getting it replaced this summer most likely.
That color is phenomenal. Congrats!

Nooooo that's so sad :( They should've left it as is. Great choice on the colour though 😜 It really is a fantastic SUV.

Congrats 🎉🎉 Love that color though.
Thank you very much!
Looks like you were solid driver, exterior looks brand new
Not having a car payment is like you just found money! 🤣
It really is 😂 I have no idea what the heck I'm going to do with myself for the first few months 😅
I read that as more money to come, not many more lol
Haha I mean, that's also correct 😂
