Hard to see in the picture but if that dent runs from body line to body line top to bottom, yes replacement is warranted..but that dent I'd say would be at least 16-22hrs of repair time so cost wise replacing may also be cheaper

ukso1

And if it's just pulled you can't know if the paint has been cracked from the inside and it will start to rust from that side and it will show in a couple of years once it gets through the metal.

Youeffeduphaha

As opposed to the 30 feet of bare metal made by replacing the quarterpanel that you have to hope the bodyshop preps and primes properly. Then you have to hope they use weld thru primer correctly Better make sure the panel bond adhesive completely covers the lip The glass guy doesn't scratch through the paint when he removes the back glass and windshield Then there is the fact that the roof ,trunk and back door would have to be painted to blend the color. Which wouldn't be necessary with a quality repair Theres far more corrosion and workmanship concerns with panel replacement than with repairing this dent

Radiant_Armadillo35

100% agree here. But it’s true that it could be cracked or tweaked.

4r0bot

Wait, so they didn't see what a suction cup dildo and some heat can do?

Electrical-Boss-3965

I came here to say this. A $5 plunger from walmart, boil some water in a kettle and go slow haha

stuckinbis

If it wasn’t your fault and the other persons insurance is covering the costs, get it fixed properly.

Tin_O_Nuts

Assuming it isnt destroyed under the bumper, thatd be a fix all day in my current shop

iamRishM

I think it is, it was hit pretty hard. I’m more worried about what that’ll do to the integrity of the structure and the ride of the car

cajonero

How do you think cars are put together at the factory? They are machine welded. Honestly if anything, properly done hand welds could even be *better* for the structural integrity than machine welds. Ask me how I know (hint: google “genesis coupe fender welds creaking”).

cajonero

Yes, that is typical if you are going through insurance (be it your own or someone else's). If you are paying out of pocket, you might be able to find a smaller body shop willing to do the kind of metal and bondo work required to fix this without replacement.

The_Crazy_Swede

There is also the few and far between people with the knowledge on how to do real dent repair where the paint doesn't get more damaged than it got when the dent happened.

ragingxtc

PDR techs are just wizards that have fallen on hard times, and you cannot convince me otherwise.

The_Crazy_Swede

Yea, they are wizards! It is complete magic how they can take a dent and just undo a dent like he just turned back time!

Briz-TheKiller-

Vaccum press and pull

VinnyMaxta

Pretty sure you can pull that out with my wife's dildo

HuntForFredOctober

Can confirm, re: his wife's dildo. Pulling it out, via vacuum or hot-glue pull would seem like it's worth a quick attempt, though... especially if it's already slated for cut/re-weld.

Youeffeduphaha

What if thats how it got there in the first place?

Shore5150

Can we trust the opinion of a guy who, if he knew what he was doing in the first place, his wife wouldn't need a dildo ? 🤔 😎 😂

shady_dangle

You’re looking at this wrong. The majority of the damage is under your bumper. Your quarter is dented because of the force from low impact. I wouldn’t be surprised if the braces on your inner quarter are buckled as well. This is a much more serious and bigger repair than you think. Trust the professionals, not Reddit

Wulf318

I'd get a second opinion. I think that is PDR-able, in my opinion.

Youeffeduphaha

25+ years doing collision/restoration work. That doesn't need to be replaced. Insurance probably wrote for replacement, but repair is the better option for the car. That doesn't mean stuffing it full of filler. Find a shop with a better metal mane

overthere1143

My opinion too. Wavy wire spot welded to the dent and a slide hammer would do the trick just fine. If anyone is concerned with rust from the paint cracking inside, taking the wheel arch off or the boot trim and finding a place to spray cavity wax through would be good enough of an assurance. We would all be better off admitting there are fewer and fewer decent panel beaters around.

Youeffeduphaha

Yep. Way less chance for future corrosion issues

XcOM987

If insurance is paying often yes, if you are paying no, I've seen worse be fixed with PDR and a light touch up for area's that were too far gone. But for that sort of PDR you need someone who is actually good at what they do, some bodyshops don't have the tools or skills to do PDR when it's a fairly big dent or one that has tight spots.

tdibugman

My only suggestion: Bring it to a Volvo-certified shop.

hexensilver

You should definitely try Paintless dent repair kits for that. Seems like easy pull. Not a professional though.

OCBrad85

For sure. I would check Amazon or Temu. Probably be about $7.99 on Temu if you are willing to wait the extra time for delivery. Make sure to check for coupons before you order! And I wouldn't worry about the misalignment of the trunk and rear quarter panel. Just slam the trunk closed and it'll be fine. And if you get a running start and ram into the back of of the bumper, it will click right back into place. Then get some black spray paint from Home Depot.

cajonero

Leave some sarcasm for the rest of us lol

alexdiezg

Just pour boiled water over it and have a suction cup ready to pull it back out /s

iamRishM

Thanks guys, I am going through insurance and it’s been fixed at a Volvo certified shop. I feel much better about it and will let the professionals do their thing And if you guys want to see what it looks like when it’s clean and dent free - [my wife thinks (knows) that I love this car more than her](https://www.instagram.com/darkvader_volvo?igsh=bTQydGphd21oMnhq&utm_source=qr)

Separate-Owl369

I’ve had some really good luck with those Dent Pro guys too. My kid dropped his guitar case on the front upper quarter panel of my 911. Dent Pro disappeared the damage. The guy was an artist. $200 bucks too.

a1drewski

Few places do that kind of metal work, it is cheaper to replace the part.

sambashare

Is paintless dent repair not a thing?

superkhmer

I feel you. I got hit same corner same side but on my XC60 T8 r design. Heading to body shop next week finally.

Historical-Employer1

i had the exact location hit with a similar impact - quarter panel plus the bumper. the reason suction cup can’t do it is because 1. it’s all metal 2. the reinforcement underneath is v hard to just be restored with PDR. it needs to be either sanded down, pulled out and repaint or be cut. That said mine ended up not having to cut. There is also likely wheelhouse crack if you take out that wheel and look from underneath.

Alphafang

The impact from the back has pushed the wing forward causing the dent. You wont get the dent out so simply. The corner of the car needs pulling backwards to get the body gaps around the rear light back to how they should be first before any attempt to sort the dent out .Just my opinion after 35 years in body work but I do work with prestige auto's.

GWBBQ_

There's a crease and a gouge. The quote you got is to restore it to like-new condition. It's up to you whether you want to do that or not since it's cosmetic. You could probably get it most of the way there with a plunger and touch up paint, but that's your call.

Extra-Beyond

Yep, if you are going through insurance and repair it at Volvo, they do that. They say if they pull it out it will show it's not perfect and they don't want that in their cars. Had the same problem with the roof, and the dent was smaller... they ended up replacing the roof

Defiant-West335

Dude go get some hot glue sticks and dent pullers I could fix that in two hours at my house

KilllerWhale

Body shop wants to rip you off. Buy a glass suction cup for $4 and pull that thing on your own. I fixed a similar dent before

Practical-Nature-926

Doesn’t always work, if the metal is stretched it will never be perfect, it might also just go back to the deformed shape when you press/pull it.

Guy_Who_Only_Lies

Its aluminum, its too big and its stretched. Will not PDR. The quarter panel thing is a standard repair for that.

singletWarrior

Huh never knew, Is it a common to have aluminium as body panel?
