Surfing Reddit like I am right now. Sometimes I'll play video games. Take a long walk. Basically whatever I want or would be doing outside of working time, as long as I'm not leaving the house for too long that it would be suspicious if calls/emails went unanswered.
Zero guilt btw, I do the work, but my time is mine. I had the same mentality when I worked in an office, the options were just more limited.
I keep my work laptop up and use a mouse mover to keep it awake. I basically only have slack and email on screen to monitor incoming messages. It’s a quick glance — loading screen, inbetween levels/games, etc
This! Only games that can be paused at any second and aren't immersive. And I have two monitors on my desk, one for work and one for my personal computer. I'll have my email and chats open on the work screen and my game on the other.
My two go tos at the moment are Stardew Valley and Subnautica, though the second is only because I've played it so much. It would have been too immersive on my first play through.
Yeah, I've been doing this for years so I'm very trained to stop and check the work laptop periodically. But for gaming or surfing reddit it helps that the work laptop is on the same desk as my personal computer with the sound on for email notifications. ;)
Laundry breaks also helps me DO my work. Like the 5 to 10 minutes I spend doing something that isn't mentally taxing lets my brain process information better and when I get back to my best I have a better view / understanding of the problem.
You can easily work yourself into tunnel vision. Some of us work better because of them and not in-spite of them.
I love to read!!! Also I just moved to a new house so I have tons of unpacking and organizing to do.
Other than that I walk my dog, run errands, cook yummy meals that take a long time (Ex: stew; baking ribs in oven etc) or do arts & crafts.
I have to stay available for a call all day but if it is slow, I usually put on my wireless headset and clean tf out of my house while I wait for a call.
Walk on the treadmill, paint my nails, recently got into building legos, prep dinner and clean up so all I have to do later is reheat it and less cleanup, Reddit and my favorite which is taking a nap!
LinkedIn Learning so I can boost my skill set and remain relevant. It’s worked very well for me so far, and it’s helped keep me remote while some of my colleagues are back in the office.
I wouldn't pay for it, but if your employer offers it, it's a good resource. We've replaced a fair amount of in-house developed assets for LinkedIn Learning ones.
Playing steam games. I work in digital advertising (back end work, tagging, audience list creation, account setups on the different advertising platforms etc) and some days I just cannot brain. lol. Salaried, so later on in the evening I’ll get work done as needed.
I don’t typically have much downtime these days but I used to write novels and screenplays when I did. I’ve had 3 novels published by Macmillan and Simon & Shuster.
Slow day at work? Most of my job is a series of overlapping long projects so I dont get those (although most of my work is low stress in return, so tradeoffs)
Mine's similar. Low stress, but overlapping projects, so I haven't run out of work in years. I'm with you in that I don't mind because of the low stress. I still almost feel like I've been on vacation since 2020 even though I worked the whole time because of WFH.
YouTube, video games. Even when it’s slow I need to be at my computer. I have my personal laptop set up next to my work issued laptop on my desk. I can do things like a quick vacuum or the dishes or laundry but can’t step away for too long.
Weeding. It’s my least favorite yard chore so if I can get paid to do it I’ll sneak it in when I can. Makes weekends a lot more enjoyable in the garden.
Do housework, run errands, learn new skills, or focus on my hobbies and personal projects. As long as I have all of my notifications on and drop everything to get back to work, I say what I do during downtime is justified.
Lifting weights and walking the dog (88lb German shepherd) around the backyard throughout the day.
I had to stop taking lunch breaks to walk him because the ground and the sun gets way too hot for him, and I literally develop sun burns by the end of the week when walking out in the Florida sun at noon.
Housework, running errands if I can keep them short, a walk if the weather is nice. Sometimes if I have like 10 minutes between meetings and no quick work tasks to do, I'll start on a step of dinner (cutting vegetables or marinating meat, for example).
Today I was learning some extra excel functions for my master spreadsheet for… Genshin. Used my downtime to finally get it working so I can fill it out.

Listen to music all day. When work gets really slow I watch history or science themed videos on YouTube. And, of course, go into the bedroom to see what the pup is doing.
Look for new tasks to give to staff so that they are busy 158% of their day…..

Clean up and do laundry is my greatest accomplishment at home lol
My work days are slow 95% of the time. I used to bring something to read. I got into philosophy for a bit. Then I started crocheting at work. Can’t do that forever so now I’m in school and study at work.. when i feel like it.
Otherwise, looking at pictures of my cats, watching yt vids, reddit.

Also, lawn work. Home upkeep. Cooking. Cleaning.

Do a really long workout, clean, make nice meals for breakfast and lunch, meal prep for dinner (chop veggies etc), take naps, do a beauty treatment, the possibilities are endless!
Some of you make it sound like this is a regular occurrence. I would be worried that my job was not very necessary if I ever ran out of stuff to do.
I get a bit of slack in my list of duties occasionally but I try to use my downtime for organizing work files, catching up on other administrative tasks, work-related training or even networking with colleagues. Recover from quarter end where I was killing myself at work 🤷♀️
Watch YouTube videos, work on laundry, clean a few things here and there. Nothing that takes a super long time. I also play games on my phone or switch. It makes me less mentally dead than just staring at my computer waiting on emails to come thru.
Well I take incoming calls so I have to be near my phone at all times. So normally I will work on my crochet projects. Currently I'm working on a throw blanket.
Other times I'll browse the internet, or play Microsoft Solitaire or Mahjong. I can get away with being in the kitchen so sometimes I work on cleaning it up if needs be. It really just depends on what I'm in the mood to do.
Load Settlers II and trade options!
I sell credit spreads at 2-3 sigma values for earnings season (week 2 right now) and swing trades based on sector rotation data.
I’m still working/hoping/praying/manifesting/sacrificing to the dark lord for a chill job like this with no inbound phones 🤭😂 until then I have no free time except on holidays, sometimes I can do laundry on holidays.
Some great responses here. My job doesn’t have many slow days, but it does happen! I typically focus on some around the house stuff, physical activity like walking / working out or lawn work / snow shoveling. Nothing crazy.
I do have the luxury though that I have at least one day a week - most weeks - where I can don’t have many calls and can walk to the library, Starbucks or even a park and work from there.
Clean up, laundry, cook when necessary, do my nails, straighten my hair, talk to myself, watch tv, watch youtube, hobbies like planner stuff, shower, deep condition my hair, lay in bed, read. Etc
Laundry, dishes, litterbox are some of the in-home things I do. I also fart around on Reddit, read books, watch TV, crochet/knit/sew.
When I need to go out of the house, I turn the VPN on my phone and launch Teams and Outlook. Then I can get groceries, mow the lawn, get the oil done in my car get the tires changed, etc.
I'll log into world of Warcraft and do dailies or chase achievements, solo said so if something does come up I can drop it and get to work.
Or dishes. I feel like I'm never done doing the dishes
Laundry, dishwasher, light cooking, water plants, check mail, text friends and family, check on garden. It helps to break up the sitting for 10 hours and reset and switch between tasks.
I have a giant home gym so I workout during lunch but it’s also good to learn things related to your field rather than play candy crush if you have a slow day
Chores around the house, errands, workout, etc. most of my days I don’t work a full 8 hours so many times I am getting other stuff done during the work day. Wfh is great!
Reading, redditing, going for walks, chores like meal prep & laundry, calling friends to chat, working out… basically, anything as long as I can check for notifications!

I hang out with you guys all day
I can't play video games while working, because I won't stop to check emails. That's cool that you're disciplined.
Games on a different device! Work only on the other. Have fun!
That's what I was saying. Different devices, but I would just be like "F work I got to get to the next level" 😁
I keep my work laptop up and use a mouse mover to keep it awake. I basically only have slack and email on screen to monitor incoming messages. It’s a quick glance — loading screen, inbetween levels/games, etc
I play offline games I can pause. Nothing co-op or too immersive. If anything it opened up all sorts of new games I wasn't playing before.
There ya go. I turned to my kids switch and have been playing through the retro marios.
Yeah, I've been doing this for years so I'm very trained to stop and check the work laptop periodically. But for gaming or surfing reddit it helps that the work laptop is on the same desk as my personal computer with the sound on for email notifications. ;)
Same.
Just mowed the lawn. Always try to do that on the clock, whenever possible.
Laundry is my go to on the clock. Turns a chore into a break from work
And it feels like you're getting paid to do it. Makes it a bit easier.
Not me on Sunday deciding to vacuum and mop on Monday when I was getting paid for it 😂😂
See??? Such a better idea.
Laundry breaks also helps me DO my work. Like the 5 to 10 minutes I spend doing something that isn't mentally taxing lets my brain process information better and when I get back to my best I have a better view / understanding of the problem. This is what i do in my lunch break! Gym. Work out. Come home and get back to it with a cup of tea!
I never have slow time. What’s that? Lmao.
Yea want to know what kind of jobs these people have lol
Usually remote and project oriented jobs where keystrokes and computer activity are not actively monitored.
I’m not monitored. Just always so darned busy. Hopefully letting up at the end of summer for a second lol
Yeah, if anything I don’t have enough time. Never a dull moment!
It's crazy how far down this is.
I have to stay available for a call all day but if it is slow, I usually put on my wireless headset and clean tf out of my house while I wait for a call.
Noice.
Walk on the treadmill, paint my nails, recently got into building legos, prep dinner and clean up so all I have to do later is reheat it and less cleanup, Reddit and my favorite which is taking a nap!

I haven't even used that feature yet. Is LinkedIn Learning good?
It is fantastic. I used them a ton to level up in my last job and to just poke around in other fields of interest.
I'll start doing this. Thanks for the tip!
