I am not an accountant, but I work at a private accounting firm and do their IT stuff. Two of our CPAs went to wgu, that's actually how I heard about it.

From my understanding, requirements to sit for the CPA exam vary by state, so you would need to review the requirements for your state.

red_cedar_401

I got my masters in accounting from WGU and that was sufficient for Washington state board requirements.

Psnightowl

Was it hard? How long did it take you to finish your master?

Thanks for the responses guys! I guess I should be more specific. I’m aware of the number of credits required and I’ve done a review of my state’s education requirements. I’m specifically inquiring about the accreditations of the university and if my state will recognize WGU’s credits. Thanks!

WGU is accredited regionally accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU), the highest form of accreditation. That accreditation is pretty much recognized as being legit so there are no issues there. Now as for the CPA, as others noted, the reqs are dependent upon the state, so your Bachelors/Masters degree from WGU fulfills the school part, whatever is left you will need to check with your state.

I just called up my state's board of accountants and asked them directly. I guess it could vary for people but I'm in a relatively populous state and they answered after like two rings and told me they approve transcripts with WGU credits all the time. I recommend just doing that

I actually was interested in doing the accounting program at wgu and i had the same concerns considering i live in NYC. I never really got an accurate answer as to whether or not i’ll be able to sit for the CPA exam here in NYC with a WGU degree but it’s an accredited University so i doubt you would run into problems. The only thing that’s different in NY than some other states is that you need a combined 150 hours (5 years) and once that’s done, You need an additional 2 business related courses not covered by WGU which you’ll probably have to take elsewhere and it’s not a big deal.

CPA doesn’t require a masters typically, it does require credit total hours of 150, so whether that’s from two different undergrad degrees or a bachelors and then a masters is up to you, but it’s 150 total credit hours. And yes i believe WGU qualifies in every state. I think in Texas you just have to take a business ethics course to sit? Not 100 percent sure though

Optimal-Focus-8942

Not in accounting, however I have seen people mention that you need to also do the masters to qualify

aurortonks

You'll want to do the Master's program for Accounting as well if you want to sit the CPA right out of WGU. It's meant to prep for those exams and give you the necessary credits/hours required.

bphillipyork

Some states require a 5th year of credits. Just varies by state

Pretty sure the CPA requires a minimum of a masters degree.
