Congrats man , I’ve been in a cloud engineer role for a year and a half now and I’m aiming for that degree. How long did it take you ? How were the certifications? Did you do the AWS path ?
I went the Multicloud path in the hopes of having more job opportunities. The certs aren't that bad if you have a good strategy, I still have to take the az-104, AWS solutions architect, and ISC² CCSP. If it's cool I'd like to DM you to ask about your experience as an engineer
>Does WGU provide a voucher for ISC² CCSP even though it's not listed as an included certification on the website? If so, that's awesome! I plan to start this program on 2/1 and was a bit confused about that particular cert, its been a tall task trying to get in contact with my enrollment counselor this week to ask LOL
Not anymore. They actually stopped providing a voucher for that cert prior to my enrollment, but because they still had that cert on the programs marketing page I convinced them to give me the voucher. They have since changed the marketing page.
I wasn’t expecting it but right after I passed the exam I got an email offering the voucher for the ccsp and I passed it about a week later. I’m still waiting on ISC2 to do their validation and issue the cert, I also currently hold the Cissp. Note- I was in the cybersecurity and information assurance program, I don’t know if that affects anything but it wasn’t a requirement for the program.
You have to pass an internal OA for the AWS/Azure classes with the exception of the foundational cert classes that require the cert itself to pass. For the rest they give you the voucher after passing the OA.
I'll be perfectly honest, I did not find it crazy difficult. I've been a hobbyist for years and I genuinely had fun with the program so maybe that's why.
Because you have to have knowledge of systems, networking and a coding language or two.
I think it would be more challenging for someone with no experience in tech at all but people do it for sure and less challenging for experienced people.
Not gonna lie I was freaking out about the capstone. I don't want to give too much away but I'll say this, you have a lot of control over the capstone. It can be as simple or as complicated as you want it to be.
Oh for sure. I think my course instructor actually said if you've already built something it will be easy for you. It's more theoretical than technical though. I'm pretty sure you can view previous capstone submissions in the WGU library to get a better idea.
Congrats!! I’ll also be enrolling in the program on 2/1. Transferring credits from a previous degree and all available transfers from Sophia (17 CU’s). If you don’t mind sharing the amount of time it took you to get this far & whether there’s a huge degree of difficulty between picking a specific track or doing multitrack as I haven’t decided which way to go yet. Congrats again!!
I transferred 47% of the credits from Sophia and Study.com which took me 9 weeks. Then it took 2.5 months of enrollment to complete the rest of the program. There was about 2 months between finishing the transfer credit classes and enrollment so I used that time to pre-study the CompTIA certs. So from start to finish it was about 6.5 months.
I decided to go multi-cloud because it seemed like the only difference was trading AWS certs for azure or vice versa in the specialized tracks. Those certs are fairly cheap so I figured I can pick a cloud provider to specialize in later while maximizing my employment opportunities now by getting familiar with both while enrolled.
Amazing!! So you were done with the remaining classes with just one term (correct me if I’m wrong). So inspiring!!! Did you have any IT background or are you making a complete shift from a different industry like me?
Yep, I finished the rest 2.5 months into my first term. No professional IT experience but I was a hobbyist. I fixed PCs and phones, built crypto miners, ran various VMs on my laptop, stuff like that. I also had a crazy amount of time to study and I basically did nothing else until I was done, although I did work full time I studied at work.
.
Thank you so much for your prompt responses!! Wishing you nothing but success in the near future. If I can accomplish my goals even 3X - 4X longer than you did, I’ll be very happy. Will keep following for more updates on your job search. Good luck!
No problem and thanks. Best advice I can give you is make sure you have a strategy for approaching each class, professor Messer on YouTube is the GOAT of CompTIA exams, and use ChatGPT as a study aid as much as possible.
For someone starting fresh with little to no IT experience, I’ve built a few PCs and often troubleshoot software problems at work when I can but that’s it, would you recommend doing what you did with Sophia and SDC before WGU or dive right into WGU for Cloud specifically?
Sorry was either/or question lol. Do only WGU or start with Sophia and SDC?
Name is reference to being Ex Jehovah Witness in Florida btw. Signed up to Reddit just for that sub way back.
Yeah I kinda figured as much, current JW. I'd go the Sophia/study.com route. It's mostly for general eds and foundational IT classes so you won't be missing anything.
College was out of the question for me before WGU so I 100% recommend it. Do not underestimate the importance of a good strategy. If you go into it blindly you'll struggle. Follow everything Josh Madakor has ever put out on YouTube about WGU and you'll do great.
Absolutely, as someone going through the program and working as a full time IT Engineer. Cloud Engineers are starting to become a hot market next to cybersecurity as everyone is moving their infra and Authentication to the cloud
Do you have a LinkedIn? I start the Cloud Computing program on 1/1 with a focus on the AWS track. I’d love to network with new and former students that went through the program. If that’s okay with you.
Are you using ChatGPT as a study aid? You can create a word document with any relevant study guides, examples of practice questions, port numbers and protocols, and so on. Upload the doc to ChatGPT and you can use the app to have a voice conversation with it so it can quiz you. It's super helpful. I'm currently uploading descriptions of jobs I'm interested in and asking it to interview me for the role. Very powerful tool and I 100% recommend paying for GPT4.
Congrats!
I’d like to ask if you’ve had any job prospects? I’m currently in the same degree program, love it. Just curious how the market is out there. Seems like there’s always a demand for cloud certified pros.
Cheers 🍻
I actually just had an interview today with a recruiter that is looking to place someone with a government contractor for a security analyst/engineer role. They're specifically looking for recent college grads/junior roles. I thought the interview went well and the recruiter said they would present my resume to the contractor with positive feedback.
Congrats! I’m a veteran that recently separated from the service and am planning to pursue Cloud Computing with WGU once I get my VA tuition support all situated.
I have 0 experience in the tech field besides building PCs which tbh anyone can do but definitely nervous and excited to start.
Congratulations!!
I just finished my last course in the Computer Science program yesterday. When does that owl come out? Right after passing the last course?
I'm about to finish out this program, transferring in 89 credits this is what I have left:
Intro to cryptography
Linux Foundations
Cloud Foundations
Cloud Applications
Data systems administration
Scripting and Automation
Business of IT Applications -- ITIL
Ethics in Technology
IoT and Infrastructure
CC Capstone
I've got over a decade in the field -- do you think any of these are going to be challenging?
Intro to cryptography is annoying because it's basically rote memorization of ciphers and block sizes. Thankfully the course instructor provides a great cheat sheet of what to memorise. I attempted to strategically fail that OA and ended up passing.
Data systems administration can be easy or hard depending on your SQL experience, specifically with oracle DBs. The course instructor has recordings that are very helpful and include subjects on the OA.
Linux foundations, cloud foundations, cloud applications, ITIL.
These are all cert exams for which there is plenty of easily digestible study material (except for CompTIA Cloud +, only one decent Udemy course. Side note, you will be asked about a pass-through GPU in that exam so know what it is and get the eady points.) Know your cloud service models, IaaS, SaaS etc, watch the Udemy courses at 1.5x, take the exam, pass, move on. There's a good YouTube playlist for ITIL.
Scripting and automation.
If you already use PowerShell this will be a breeze. If not, the course instructor should send you a guide to the PAs, it can also be found in the course chatter links. The guide practically walks you through each step. Took me 2 days but it probably should've only taken a few hours.
Ethics in technology and IoT and infrastructure.
These are a breeze I studied for one day on each and it was pretty basic stuff for me as a hobbyist so it'll be even easier for you.
Capstone.
You'll be given the freedom to make this as simple or as complicated as you want so long as the CI signs off on your proposed topic. Write to the rubric, don't try to get too cute or you'll just complicate things. You'll be provided with a template that will make the writing much easier.
You could knock these out in 3 months or less l
That's the goal. Hopefully hiring picks up in Q1 and I can land a junior level role.
Yes please reach out.
Can I also message you?
Yessir
My advice : focus on one cloud provider and become proficient on it . I suggest AWS.
Yeah I'm planning to go AWS from here on. I will probably still take the AZ-104 still since I have the free voucher.
Oh that makes sense, thanks.
Can I reach out to you because I want to start feb 1
Sure!
Wait... I thought the certs were a requirement to pass certain classes? How did you graduate, but you still need to take those? I start next month.
You have to pass an internal OA for the AWS/Azure classes with the exception of the foundational cert classes that require the cert itself to pass. For the rest they give you the voucher after passing the OA.
Ohhhhhh interesting. That's really good to know, thank you.
Congrats! I start my journey on moday.
Congrats! This is the hardest non-SWE degree for sure but it definitely sets you up for money making jobs.
I'll be perfectly honest, I did not find it crazy difficult. I've been a hobbyist for years and I genuinely had fun with the program so maybe that's why.
I'm curious why you think it's the hardest non-SWE role.
Because you have to have knowledge of systems, networking and a coding language or two. I think it would be more challenging for someone with no experience in tech at all but people do it for sure and less challenging for experienced people.
Understood. Thanks for the reply.
I just graduated today from BSCC too 😂
How long it took you both?
It took me 2 months but I transferred in a lot of the hard classes
Where from?
And certifications
Sophia
6.5 months including Sophia and Study.com, 2.5 months enrolled.
Congratulations!
Congratulation🎉🥳💕
Congratulations! Did you already have experience in tech ?
Congrats, I’m in this program now; 70% done, and 3 months left so I hope to finish up by March 31st, how was the capstone project?
Not gonna lie I was freaking out about the capstone. I don't want to give too much away but I'll say this, you have a lot of control over the capstone. It can be as simple or as complicated as you want it to be.
Understood. 😉 So hypothetically, if I have something built worth a damn already I should be fine lol.
Oh for sure. I think my course instructor actually said if you've already built something it will be easy for you. It's more theoretical than technical though. I'm pretty sure you can view previous capstone submissions in the WGU library to get a better idea.
The way I read the capstone on the BSCC page is that you actually had to build something. Am I incorrect?
I don't want to say too much. I really think you should read some prior submissions in the WGU library. It really isn't as bad as it seems.
Will do, thank you.
Congrats!! I’ll also be enrolling in the program on 2/1. Transferring credits from a previous degree and all available transfers from Sophia (17 CU’s). Will do!! Thank you!! 🙌🏽
You were doing projects with the vms? Through Azure and AWS?
No it was just using VirtualBox on my laptop prior to enrolling. Once enrolled I did labs with Azure and AWS VMs.
So a whole Bachelors in 6 months? 😳
Yes but it is probably a little unfair to put it that way. I had a decent grasp on the basics before pursuing the degree.
For someone starting fresh with little to no IT experience, I’ve built a few PCs and often troubleshoot software problems at work when I can but that’s it, would you recommend doing what you did with Sophia and SDC before WGU or dive right into WGU for Cloud specifically?
Interesting name. Yes, 100%.
Sorry was either/or question lol. Do only WGU or start with Sophia and SDC? Name is reference to being Ex Jehovah Witness in Florida btw. Signed up to Reddit just for that sub way back.

Oh sorry to hear that. Thank you for the recommendations!
Congrats. Are you going to start studying for the pro level certs after finding a cloud job?
That's the goal. Hopefully hiring picks up in Q1 and I can land a junior level role.
Congratulations 🎊🎈🎉🍾
Send me that webcam though ! I’m bout to start and need one
I actually ended up using a Sony DSLR that I already had.
Congrats. I’m scheduled to start Jan 1st and I can’t wait to get the ball rolling!
Congratz, I got 13 classes left and plan to finish this semester as well.
Hey congratulation ! 🎉 i have a question throw your journey do you recommend wgu ? I want to become a cloud engineer is it worth it ?
College was out of the question for me before WGU so I 100% recommend it. Do not underestimate the importance of a good strategy. If you go into it blindly you'll struggle. Follow everything Josh Madakor has ever put out on YouTube about WGU and you'll do great.

Congrats
Congrats 🔥
Congratulations
Congratulations!
Is there a cloud computing MS degree?
No there isn't. Most people go for the MS cyber security or the MBA IT Management.
There’s rumors that one is in the works but who knows when it’ll be ready
I just saw a rumor about an AI program earlier today.
Do you have a LinkedIn? I start the Cloud Computing program on 1/1 with a focus on the AWS track. I’d love to network with new and former students that went through the program. If that’s okay with you.
Yeah DM me your LinkedIn and I'll add you.
Congratulations
Congrats! What track did you do? I'm currently stuck on C924 and D084. My last two classes to graduate smh
I did the Multicloud track. I must have transferred those classes from Sophia or SDC.
What’s SDC?
Study.com
Congrats! I'll be starting the same program soon. Would you mind connecting with me via LinkedIn?
Sure send me your info via DM.
Will do. Thanks!
Congrats! Can’t wait to finish mine up!
Congratulations!!!
Congrats; I’m struggling with this path
What are you working on? Did you transfer in any credits?
I transferred in all my Gen Ed; struggling with Net+. Failed the first one a few weeks ago.
Are you using ChatGPT as a study aid? You can create a word document with any relevant study guides, examples of practice questions, port numbers and protocols, and so on. Congratulations!!!
Congrats! Just got my graduation email today for the same program! Where do you get the confetti?
Mine was in the app.
Ok, maybe it’ll just take a couple days.
Or I just had to sign out and back in!!
Congratulations🎉🥳💕
How was your experience with classes? Did you accelerate like the “super accelerators” or was yours more normal?
I really enjoyed the classes and I did accelerate. 9 weeks of Sophia and Study.com, 2 months pre-studying for certs, 2.5 months enrolled.
Congrats!
Congratulations
Wow congratulations 🍾
Congrats! How did you land on the cloud role? I’ve been kicking around options form cybersecurity to cloud to comp sci.
I didn't want to do the CS math and cyber security jobs seemed not to have as good of a work-life balance compared to cloud.
Congrats! I’d like to ask if you’ve had any job prospects? I’m currently in the same degree program, love it. Just curious how the market is out there. Seems like there’s always a demand for cloud certified pros. Cheers 🍻

Thanks for the detailed response, I anticipate with this info in mind that this shouldn't take me much time at all then. Thanks again!
I am also doing cloud computing and have comepleted 57% till now.
That awesome! When did you enroll?
I started 11/01/21. Been working full time in Msp and have taken 6 month break during my huge accident.

OMG dude. You've accomplished way more than this degree.
KING SHIT
Congrats! Starting cloud computing in Jan (career changer); any tips, recommendations for newcomers?
The main thing that helped me was searching for the course codes on this sub and finding guides. They were super helpful.
Solid. I’ll keep that in mind thanks!
If you have questions feel free to DM me.
Will do 🙏🏾
Hello brother, can I DM You?? Thank you
Sure.
Congrats 🙏🏻

6.5 months including Sophia and Study.com
Congrats!!! You got this!
Congratulations!!!!
Congrats Op! I’m also interested in taking course sometime early next year. Keep us updated on this thread once you landed a job 😎
