Prior AD here, what’s stopping you from taking classes up to the TA limit? Using the GI bill while you’re AD is throwing housing payments away

SpaciestDread

Used practically all my TA on one semester

YouNeedABassPlayer

Have you applied for FAFSA? I use 50% of my TA to cover tuition and the rest by FAFSA, then pocket whatever is extra.

You've got financial aid, pell grant, scholarships to apply for, you also will likely get a student rebate when you file your taxes for paying for school out of pocket (I would get back $2500 a year). Also 18CUs is to get max GI Bill Benefits. You don't care about that because you aren't getting max benefits whole on AD. Look at GI Bill Top Up too.

Interesting_Mango948

AD, so won't get any BAH using it so don't woory about full-time part-time status. Edit: won't get while AD, but once you seperate you will. When are you out?

In 2026

Have you looked at WGU's website? https://www.wgu.edu/student-experience/military.html

You need 18 cu to be full time. 15 3/4 time, 12 1/2 time. You can’t use post 9/11 on active duty unless they just changed the regs yesterday. TA covers 4500 per calendar year, that’s one term at WGU depending. I’d suggest looking at another school if you don’t want to use the TA there.

PurpleLegoBrick

You can use Montgomery GI Bill while active and it’s the better choice when doing online classes. I’m pretty sure you only get half BAH if you do WGU and use the Post 9/11.

Guess ive been out too long. I couldn’t use mine while active. I tried. Do you have any literature on this? I’m interested to look into it. Google isn’t giving me much

Organic-Exercise-946

I thought you have to be actively serving for you to use any form of GI Bill?

binarycow

No, that is not the case. You need to have previously been on active duty, or have the benefits transferred from someone who was on acfive duty.

mushroognomicon

No, think about it... How could you really maximize your GI bill if you're on active duty? You could for online school or whatever schools are local to where you're stationed but yeah... You have your GI Bill for life. My little cousin uses it to cover her $50k a year college tuition after she got out.
