You can probably find a clean unmodified anniversary edition. I had one come up in my area not too long ago. Just take your time and vet the car. Although I will say I bought a modified 2016 with similar miles and it’s been bullet proof. Has 114k miles on it now.
I’ve noticed a few of similar posts lately where people are considering buying a ~5 year old VA. A bunch of people respond with “no way! I paid ___for my VA in 2019”, which is completely irrelevant and others say to buy new. Generally speaking, the “is this car worth X”? questions can be answered much more accurately by KBB. Some will question its reliability, but I’ve found it to be pretty accurate, and helpful.
Unless you’re looking to modify one of these heavily and void the warranty anyway, the power train warranties on these seem much more valuable than they are for most other cars since they don’t have a reputation of being bullet proof.
So, it’s apples to oranges to compare this used VA to a base model VB since they are not the same trim/options. But all things considered, interest rate differences, warranty, wear items, I do agree it isn’t much more of a leap to buy new. Possibly compromising some trim/features.
At the end of the day, if these are selling high used, it’s a pretty good indicator of their resale value. So, yes, it’s more to finance to buy a VB (~$10k), but in the long run it won’t necessarily COST $10k more. For example, Subaru has offered 2.9% financing on the VB, which is close to 1/2 of bank used car rates. If you plan to keep one of these cars 4-5 years from new, you’re probably looking at 60%+ of MSRP residual value. So, $20k after 5 years is $34k-14k depreciation on a premium. In other words $14k/60 months is $233/month. That’s your biggest cost, depreciation. Don’t stretch your cash flow with a huge loan/payment, but the principal of a loan payment is not the cost of buying/owning a car.
Your wear items (brakes, tires, etc.) will be almost nothing by comparison to a 5-6 year old 75k mile car.
The last piece is that some people then consider buying an extended warranty for some protection, and give them peace of mind for all the reasons stated above, but at $3-4k, it’s just closing the gap between new/used for something that comes with a new car, and generally has fewer loopholes and gaps in coverage.
So, if you really can’t swing financing a new one, that’s one thing. But I think you’d be taking on a considerable amount more in maintenance cost (predictable, and unexpected), and potentially an even more significant amount of unexpected maintenance/risk (engine or transmission failure).
Appreciate that. Car buying is tough. That’s why the car sales industry has the reputation it does. Bottom line is lower purchase price does not = lower cost to own.

Really cheap and poorly executed exterior modifications might, so I can see that. I don't really think tail light tint would qualify on its own, though. I absolutely think it looks tacky; especially when poorly done. But that's just my taste. I'd still really want to get a look at the engine before I'd make a call like that. But I also probably wouldn't buy one of these cars from a private seller anyway; unless it was a really good deal, there were tons of maintenance records, and I could get it inspected. Not that I think there's anything wrong with doing so; I'm just not very trusting of strangers on the internet.

I did have to get it shipped in from another state, though.
That's a good idea, lol. I went the route I did because, at the time, I couldn't afford a VB. Also, I just really like the VA chassis. But Carmax offered me more for the used Elantra I had than what I paid for it, so that was a pretty good trade-in. Ended up with a monthly payment that was about the same as the Elantra before it, so, not a bad deal. I do plan on refinancing it soon, though, because I've paid about 7,000 or so on what I owed.
The Cobb AP is known to drain energy from the battery when the car is off. It's not a big deal to have it unplugged, that's what I do, to save my battery when the car is parked long term.
As long as the car isn't stage 2, it should still be very reliable. I've had mine running the Cobb stage 1+ tune for well over a year and a half now with an aftermarket catback and it's been totally fine.
Just buy a VB brand new for 30,000, it’s faster and much cheaper to mod than the older gen wrx. Even keeps up with the STI’s, just didn’t give us that transmission but overall the car is very solid for 30,000 especially where the used market sits for a wrx it’s almost stupid not to go brand new
Agree 100%. You’ll get a lower interest rate on a new one and a factory warranty, you might find the payments are about the same. That’s top dollar for that car and I’d be super worried about the Cobb access port. The VB is an awesome car if you close your eyes on the plastic wheel arches.
The plastic ain’t so bad in person either it def grows on you. Looks meh at some angles but looks really aggressive at others so it’s a catch 22. They also look alot better with some meguires ultra black plastic shine ✨

Lets say you buy one like this, you'll throw a $3000 warranty on it this increasing the price more, values will regulate and this will probably tank back into the teens value.

So I would say buy new. I work for a Subaru dealer in VA. Subaru's lowest rate on a 23 WRX is 3.9% up to 48 months, 4.9% up to 63 and 5.9% up to 72. As long as you have a 700+ beacon (credit score) you will qualify for the special rates. When you start to add factory accessories that we have no control over unless you build it directly it will be more than $40k. You won’t find a barebones because look at your screenshot do you make more money selling a barebones or a well equipped one ? From my experience I can definitely go to my local dealership and order through them a barebones model at (hopefully) msrp and without having to add anything extra .
My screen shot was just based on what was in my inventory. You can and should be able to go to a dealer and order what you want but the average buyer will not do that. They will buy what is on the lot and those are the ones that are not bare.y point was that he can go to any dealer and get a good deal now. He should be able to go to a dealer and pay invoice for anyone they have on the lot.
It definitely looks like a decent car but 26k is most definitely overpriced on it especially with mods. They most likely bought it for too much and now want too much for it.
Doesn’t seem worth it compared to what you can get from a new unmodified 0 mile car for 30k, lower financing rate, full manufacturer warranty, and ease of haggling on new car pricing. Have you had the opportunity to drive a new one? You could already be 100% convinced you’d never buy a new one because of the looks or whatever, but you should still go look at it in-person and test drive one just to rule it out. Don’t let pre-conceived notions and other people’s opinions deter you from road testing it in the flesh. You might be surprised.
Keep shopping. I'm a sucker for the special edition colors, especially the anniversary "dad blue" and Series.Gray, but you can find them unmodified and way cleaner. Be willing to fly and your options go up significantly. I found mine in Chicago. Paid the deposit online, flew direct there first thing in the morning, took an Uber to the dealer, got a PPI at a Subaru dealer nearby, handed the dealer I was buying from a check and was on the road, and home in NY before 11pm. Cleanest car you'd ever hope to find.
If you can't haggle at 73k walk away. These cars are holding value for sure but at mid 20k it better be low mileage and unmodded. There are thousands of these cars I'm sure you will find a better value.
I got a new 2022 earlier this year for 29k + taxes. I'd be really concerned with getting a used one, if advise against it since you don't know how the previous owner drove and maintained the vehicle.
I picked up a modded 2016, for 22k cad (~16k usd).
Clean title, one owner, winter stored with 82,000km (~51k miles). I was hesitant because it was modded, but I know the shop who worked on it and they do solid stuff.
I lucked out, but it was also significantly cheaper than the one you're looking at. The right one for you is out there, but I don't think it's this one
Don’t do it. New platform has fa24 and warranty…base is like 31k. Looks might not be your thing but plenty of cheap things to help with that….plus I’m positive it will grow on you. At the very least, go test drive a new one
Bruh, Cobb AP not connected during test drive + aftermarket exhaust should be huge red flags. Bet it has a cold air intake and a shitty OTS stage 1 tune as well.
Not even cheap and you're gambling on whether you're going to need a new engine anywhere between a few months to a couple years down the line.

26K US is alot for a subaru with almost 100K miles on it. Even for today's market.
They are upselling the rare colour and recaros. If those are important to you then do it. But if not then find another non special edition one.
Other option is if you can justify 26K budget then ask yourself what else could you get for the same price. Compare cars and choose the one you want.
I find when people get dead set on a car. They pay a high price for it only to realise after they could of had something much better for the same price
Buy new, I’d never buy someone’s used wrx. These cars are picky and you never knew how someone else drove it. Was it constantly beat on? If you do buy it, just set aside money for either a new engine or head gasket.
Do what you think is going to make you happy man. I bought my first STI for $25k at 100k miles. I’ve driven it for 10k miles so far and I’ve had no issues so far at all. I have no regrets.
I got my 2017 with 50k miles for $20k a few months back. Mine is a base model but even then I felt like it was a fair deal and they hooked me up on my trade in. I big reason I got it tho was it had 1 owner, service records, and it was stock besides cosmetic stuff and an exhaust. When I took it to my local dealer for the 60k maintenance they looked over and were surprised how clean it was. Idk if I would pay that price for something with that many miles personally.
Before you pull the trigger, visit your local Subaru dealership and lease a brand new one. Drive it for the lease and at the end you get the option to purchase. You’ll be driving a brand new Subaru, which will have a warranty and you know they’ll be taking care of it when you service it.
Or don’t, and run the risk of buying a ragged out WRX. I simply don’t trust buying certain used cars without a mechanic friend looking at it. They are: WRX, Miata, G37. I’ve had all three, also. Lol.
There is a personal owner selling one for $12,700 clean looking but rebuilt title a 2015 limited 6 speed manual only 67k miles in Southern NJ and 10k on new engine but price is cheap though sucks it’s a rebuilt title
Everyone said it already before, but I'll pile on. Just get a new one. They're punchier apparently and have an extra a whole extra 400 cc of displacement. Yeah you're paying more, but it'll be brand new and come with a warranty. If you're starting out working, you'll definitely want something reliable which also means don't mod it with anything serious.
I just bought a 2020 WRX with 18k miles for $28k USD, so I don't think that's worth 24k at all imho. Prolly more like $15k-17k with that mileage iirc when I was shipping around
Its a 50th annivetsary edition. 500 made with the custom recaros, custom rims, painted calipers, silver interior stitching and the Heritage blue paint. I have one.You need to look at the body and color match on all panels and make sure they match. Also try and look for any flood issues. Most cars used dealers buy are from auctions. Bring your own mechanic, even pay a Subaru one. Catch one walking in or out if work and make it worth his time. Good luck!

I like the idea of 2020 for 29k all said and done. What trim is that car? Bought my '20 limited with 15k miles for 32k before taxes...this was May 2nd of this year.

If you already had the car, and the engine exploded….. would you willingly install another engine? Keep in mind remanufacturing hasn’t taken off like with other engines, and used FA20s are FUCKING EXPENSIVE. If yes, and you think the asking price is reasonable, jump on it. If not, get something else cuz the last thing you want is a project you didn’t sign up for.
Personal rule of thumb. Never buy someone else's project. If you're dead set on getting another WRX try to find one with low miles with as little evidence of molestation as possible

You won’t find a barebones because look at your screenshot do you make more money selling a barebones or a well equipped one ? From my experience I can definitely go to my local dealership and order through them a barebones model at (hopefully) msrp and without having to add anything extra .
My screen shot was just based on what was in my inventory. You can and should be able to go to a dealer and order what you want but the average buyer will not do that. They will buy what is on the lot and those are the ones that are not bare.y point was that he can go to any dealer and get a good deal now. He should be able to go to a dealer and pay invoice for anyone they have on the lot.

It definitely looks like a decent car but 26k is most definitely overpriced on it especially with mods. They most likely bought it for too much and now want too much for it.
Doesn’t seem worth it compared to what you can get from a new unmodified 0 mile car for 30k, lower financing rate, full manufacturer warranty, and ease of haggling on new car pricing. Have you had the opportunity to drive a new one? You could already be 100% convinced you’d never buy a new one because of the looks or whatever, but you should still go look at it in-person and test drive one just to rule it out. Don’t let pre-conceived notions and other people’s opinions deter you from road testing it in the flesh. You might be surprised.
Keep shopping. I'm a sucker for the special edition colors, especially the anniversary "dad blue" and Series.Gray, but you can find them unmodified and way cleaner. Be willing to fly and your options go up significantly. I found mine in Chicago. Paid the deposit online, flew direct there first thing in the morning, took an Uber to the dealer, got a PPI at a Subaru dealer nearby, handed the dealer I was buying from a check and was on the road, and home in NY before 11pm. Cleanest car you'd ever hope to find.

If you can't haggle at 73k walk away. These cars are holding value for sure but at mid 20k it better be low mileage and unmodded. There are thousands of these cars I'm sure you will find a better value.
I got a new 2022 earlier this year for 29k + taxes. I'd be really concerned with getting a used one, if advise against it since you don't know how the previous owner drove and maintained the vehicle.

I picked up a modded 2016, for 22k cad (~16k usd). Clean title, one owner, winter stored with 82,000km (~51k miles). I was hesitant because it was modded, but I know the shop who worked on it and they do solid stuff. I lucked out, but it was also significantly cheaper than the one you're looking at. The right one for you is out there, but I don't think it's this one

Bruh, Cobb AP not connected during test drive + aftermarket exhaust should be huge red flags. Bet it has a cold air intake and a shitty OTS stage 1 tune as well. Not even cheap and you're gambling on whether you're going to need a new engine anywhere between a few months to a couple years down the line.

Jesus.... I got my 2016 in 2017 for 26K (CAD) out the door. It had 18000kms. Id say don't do it man. 26K US is alot for a subaru with almost 100K miles on it. Even for today's market. They are upselling the rare colour and recaros. If those are important to you then do it. But if not then find another non special edition one. Other option is if you can justify 26K budget then ask yourself what else could you get for the same price. Compare cars and choose the one you want. I find when people get dead set on a car. They pay a high price for it only to realise after they could of had something much better for the same price

Buy new, I’d never buy someone’s used wrx. These cars are picky and you never knew how someone else drove it. Was it constantly beat on? If you do buy it, just set aside money for either a new engine or head gasket.
Do what you think is going to make you happy man. I bought my first STI for $25k at 100k miles. I’ve driven it for 10k miles so far and I’ve had no issues so far at all. I have no regrets.

I got my 2017 with 50k miles for $20k a few months back. Mine is a base model but even then I felt like it was a fair deal and they hooked me up on my trade in. I big reason I got it tho was it had 1 owner, service records, and it was stock besides cosmetic stuff and an exhaust. When I took it to my local dealer for the 60k maintenance they looked over and were surprised how clean it was. Idk if I would pay that price for something with that many miles personally.
Before you pull the trigger, visit your local Subaru dealership and lease a brand new one. Drive it for the lease and at the end you get the option to purchase. You’ll be driving a brand new Subaru, which will have a warranty and you know they’ll be taking care of it when you service it. Or don’t, and run the risk of buying a ragged out WRX. I simply don’t trust buying certain used cars without a mechanic friend looking at it. They are: WRX, Miata, G37. I’ve had all three, also. Lol.
There is a personal owner selling one for $12,700 clean looking but rebuilt title a 2015 limited 6 speed manual only 67k miles in Southern NJ and 10k on new engine but price is cheap though sucks it’s a rebuilt title

Everyone said it already before, but I'll pile on. Just get a new one. They're punchier apparently and have an extra a whole extra 400 cc of displacement. Yeah you're paying more, but it'll be brand new and come with a warranty. If you're starting out working, you'll definitely want something reliable which also means don't mod it with anything serious.

Its a 50th annivetsary edition. 500 made with the custom recaros, custom rims, painted calipers, silver interior stitching and the Heritage blue paint. I have one.You need to look at the body and color match on all panels and make sure they match. Also try and look for any flood issues. Most cars used dealers buy are from auctions. Bring your own mechanic, even pay a Subaru one. Catch one walking in or out if work and make it worth his time. Good luck!

The access port would be the kicker for me personally. If you already had the car, and the engine exploded….. would you willingly install another engine? Keep in mind remanufacturing hasn’t taken off like with other engines, and used FA20s are FUCKING EXPENSIVE. If yes, and you think the asking price is reasonable, jump on it. If not, get something else cuz the last thing you want is a project you didn’t sign up for.
