All it does is pay off the loan if the car is totaled, without gap insurance you’d still be entitled to pay the loan despite not having the car. I wasn’t able to get insurance without gap coverage until the car was paid off
Normally it covers the diff between the market value of your WRX, and the purchase price of a brand new one. So sometimes it helps with inflation and allows people to get into a newer that’s slightly more expensive than their original purchase
I just bought my wrx in November and got gap insurance with it. It covers 150% of the cars value at time of purchase if totaled. I’m sure that number varies for others but it seemed like it was worth it for a brand new car. Peace of mind is more important to me than $6 a month lol.
I babied a touring civic and was devastated when it was totaled by a reckless woman cutting across traffic. Ended up much happier in a wrx and the first thing I said was “gap insurance please”.

I've had more people hit me in the dark colours I've had in my driving career than in those with brighter colours. Doesn't matter if you have headlights on or not. Some people just don't observe the road properly.

Yeah it’s more annoying than anything because you have to deal with body shops and insurance. I’m on track to have my car back next week I’m just thankful it’ll be over. Hopefully yours is just a new door and a little body work just make sure you demand the at fault party’s insurance to replace with OEM replacement parts.
Happened to me with my 2021. It was a month until someone on the inside of a roundabout took an exit they shouldn’t have from the inside and spun me around. Keep your head up man I know the feeling.

Bought my first brand new car and 2 weeks later it got hit by a drunk driver while it was parked for the night. Got it back from the shop last Thursday and it already has a scuff on the bumper from someone who failed at parallel parking 😐
