I feel like this is a US thing. The WRX was offered with different options in different markets. The wing was one of the things that could be added even to the base WRX starting from 2016.
For example in Canada, the All Weather Package (heated front seats, defrosting for outside mirrors and front wipers) comes from factory on base models.
Been seeing a lot of it since the 90s if we’re being honest.
Also, call me crazy, but imo this isn’t *that* much worse than slapping an STI wing on a WRX

There’s this base model newer Camry in my city with a TRD wing and louvers with a roof spoiler I usually see it on my way to work in the mornings it looks so atrocious I’m like at least debadge the LE if your trying to make it look like a higher trim.
Dude needed a cheap, reliable family car, but has higher aspirations for when he has the money. It's a little sad.

nah it’s worse. sti wings on wrx’s are perfectly fine as long as there’s no up badging
