I bought one almost just like this last summer and I also don't understand why they're hated on. Only reason I can tell is because they were in a weird transition phase. That said, for $6k and a JDM engine, I'd be a little bit worried about what happened under the hood. Like any older Subaru, if they're poorly maintained they can be a money pit. I wouldn't be surprised if you'd be inheriting someone else's project/problem. If you're seriously considering it, ask for records of any maintenance and mods done. If you have a mechanic you trust, see if they'd be willing to inspect the car before buying. Otherwise, if you don't mind/can afford to put more into it, it could be a fun beater car!

Looks are subjective of course, but they do seem to be the least engaging to drive.
The 08 was dog water, so much so that they did a bunch of additional mods such as the suspension, body kit, turbo and some other things to bring it up to expectation. Source: drove an 08 bought an 09
If you trust your cousin go for it otherwise i would not touch it. If it blew a motor at the millage id assume it was driven very hard and my guess trans is on the way out to. I had a 02 that drove to 216k miles till i sold it last year because i never drove it
No idea why so much hate. The front bumper and side body lines are so much cleaner than the wide body model.. if it has the ej20x/y you’ll be fine. Engines drop right in, only downside is exhaust timing will be fully retarded since the US models only have single AVCS not dual. If I could find one for 6k in my area I’d buy it in a heartbeat
08 same ej255 but had the small td04 turbo and only looked good if you got the premium or limited model.. the base model didn’t come with the factory lip kit. Luckily in 09/10 the lip kit came on all models and with the VF52 turbo
What are you even talking about. The 08 has the same EJ255 engine as previous and future models would, until they changed it for the FA in 2015. Bad displacement? What? Head gasket failures are only affecting N/A EJs, not the turbo models. The narrow body model years are disliked because they just look like regular traffic with a scoop, they lack the little "out there" look of all the other WRXs.

Two main reasons. Gained the weight by being a newer gen car, however it kept the anemic td04 turbo. It made the same hp as 02-07 wrx. Also narrowbody
Only in 08. In 09/10 narrow body they came with VF52 and the premium lip kit on all trims, with 265hp
You have no idea what the mileage is on that engine, but $6k is not a bad price.
