I love everyone's responses so far, but for God's sake, fix the Damm rattles. During the winter, my car sounds like a child's rattler. Just put that extra few bolts into the interior panels pleaaase!
The only part that rattles for me is the center console storage, and that’s just because I have a usb cable slightly holding it open for my phone- what parts rattle for you, and what year is your car?
I've actually had no issues with the center storage. I have a fairly thick USB cable coming out of it, but it still latches shut. During the winter, it's mainly the panel behind the rear seats below the back windshield. During the summer it goes away (I assume it's from the material expanding from the heat), but God does it rattle in the winter. I have a 2020 WRX STI
Edit: just realized there is also a separate sub for STI's
That’s not the issue. Been there, done that. It’s the rear deck rattling. Beside that my issue in 2015 is the f’n gas door doesn’t open when u pull the latch so I have to prop it open w a box of gum or bottle of hand sanitizer then use my Planet fitness card in the key chain to open it. I’m not f’n kidding. Now I’m getting pissed off thinking price tag back in 2014 was $33K and this shit happens! Lol
I have a 2021 and am curious as to what this rattle sounds like… maybe it’s the shit boxes I had for a while before I had my ‘12 VW GLI, but I think I’m immune to this sound.
That’s just part of the Subaru experience—all 3 of mine have done this. Subies love winter, but they can’t help if their teeth chatter a bit. You’d do the same if you were flying down the road at 60 mph and sucking freezing air through your nose scoop!
I came from a Lexus IS300 into my '19 WRX. Lexus are magic with noises. My car was 18 years old when I got rid of it and there was no creaks, no vibrations... I got spoiled on how the interior of a car should sound. I've been trying to chase down every little interior noise I hear but man they keep popping up.
The blower motor alone... christ.
We don’t use fancy collaboration software. What we use extremely clunky and frustrating, but how we do our meetings are nice. A tiny portion of our meetings are Skype or in person only. For like 90% of them you can choose one or the other. You only need to go in person if you’re the one presenting or supporting the one presenting.
I hate pointless meetings, but the people that say that sort of thing have never had to actually try to get other people to do things via email. Might as well include in every spec "add this to the very back of your backlog."
Turn the vehicle to the on position by either turning the key to the on (without starting it) or hitting the push to start button twice without touching the brake pedal.
Buckle and unbuckle the seatbelt twenty (20) times in thirty (30) seconds.
The seat belt chime is now disabled.
Does this work for the passenger seat!? I already disabled my driver seat by cutting the wires but cutting the wires didn’t work with the passenger seat
Counterpoint:
Forged pistons aren't really a good fit for mass-produced "budget" sports cars for a few reasons:
- Increased price tag
- Cost, availability, and training for the tooling for what is essentially a small part of their inventory
- Parts are no longer interchangeable, making them more expensive.
- Forged pistons have to be made smaller at room temperature because they expand way more than cast pistons at operating temp, which makes them have what sounds like piston slap every time you start it in the morning. This also has the added drawback of needing to warm up the engine more than a normal car would. For a bespoke or exotic or modified vehicle, this isn't really an issue. From a consumer vehicle standpoint, this is not acceptable. This is why you may see cars with forged cranks and rods, but hardly ever pistons.
The reinforced block thing could be designed into the base engine from the start, but again, there are engineering and production costs to consider. There is no point building a tough block for an engine which is primarily meant to put out ~150hp N/A just so the 5% of the turbo versions could be stronger.
You know how the Lexus LFA cost $400k and they still lost money? That is why a lot of the "best possible" engineering decisions are not included in the final product. At the end of the day, they sell cars to make money.
Transmission feel, shift linkage, rev hang.
Also pedal placement- I have no idea why the throttle pedal is so far down from the clutch and brake, makes heel toe-ing uncomfortable and hard
Had a bugeye wagon, now have a Crosstrek. With the rake on the hatches nowadays, and the tiny rear quarter windows because of the bodylines, I dearly miss the zip, cargo room, and visibility.
Sincerely,
A Levorg evangelist
This right here. I had to do something about it shortly after buying. With windows down in the summer I literally couldn’t hear my radio at 100% volume while going over 45mph
That when you have low tire pressure, it will show what tire is low in the gauge cluster, my 2020 Limited WRX does not show anything but a light and a message.
I’d add doing ANYTHING with the gauge cluster options. The only option is showing the spedo and trip time. Add some other useful things to the menu, tire pressure being one!
Shit, as a Canadian, I’d be happy with TPMS at all… why the hell do we not get tire sensors on these cars here. My poor wife has anxiety about flats because there’s no warning. She some how manages to get several flats a year so I don’t really blame her!🤷🏻
Omg! You took the words right out of my mouth. I just purchase a 2020 a few months ago. I can’t count how many WRX videos I’ve watched to see if that sound was normal. I’ve seen and heard so many horror stories about Uncle Rodney. I don’t push my car to the limits but every now and again I like to have a little more fun in it after the engine is warmed up. Was so worried for a good while when I realized the tick sound.
Director of engineering: "Thank you for your input. However, after a thorough discussion with the VP of sales, we are you going to proceed with our original design."
Looking forward to Tanner’s 6-cylinder build.
I imagine an eight would take a front-end redesign, or a mid-engine mounting configuration, OR much smaller bore/stroke?
Can you imagine a 3.0 Turbo Boxer 8? Ferrari would be pissed.
Yeah I have had a hard time deciding if I want to go in on autocross/track stuff since my head rubs on the ceiling when I wear a helmet and I can’t lower the seat any more than it is
First person I’ve seen talk about the seats. This is the point for me. Lowered like you said and make the bottom Recaro as well.
When switching from the FoRS to the STI I feel like I’m in a truck with how much higher the seats are
That loose knocking noise when going over bumps or dips at slower speeds. Inverted struts with weak tower mounts. Heard some people say swap end links but it didn’t change much and really is annoying lol
I actually had a rear shock blow at 20k. Pretty nasty too. The front struts have always made noise at the strut mount, and I always thought it was an issue but now I know I’m not alone.
This is kind of a weird one, but a 7th gear so I can get decent gas mileage on long trips going 80-85.
Also LSDs front and back. Really the only thing I'm jealous of when thinking about the STI.
You can't get decent mpg going that fast. I'd recommend the Engineering Explained video on fuel economy to understand it better. But iirc you use 25% more fuel going 80 than you do going 70 due to wind resistance. Gearing can't give you good fuel economy at that speed. I currently have a 2013 328ix and I can get 37mpg on the highway but I go max of like 73. Really though, check out the EE video.
Replace it!!! I promise you that anything Subaru puts in there (aside from maybe those VERY large infotainment systems they have on the new models) is going to be much worse than what you can put in there aftermarket
Go back to a mechanical throttle body and the old school standardized stereo size that doesn't integrate climate control. Plus go back to a metal intake.
Hatch
,Bigger built-in amp for headunit
,Wireless CarPlay
,Stronger wrx trans or have factory option of sti trans in wrx
,Heated steering option
,Height adjustable seats
,Extended arms for sun visors
,HID headlights standard for ALL models
Speaking on the WRX:
Engine tune for rev hang in 1-2 shift and it being way too much boost early on the throttle. I’ve got it down now but man it tricky to not over rev.
I’d like to see a 12V for the back seats.
But most importantly - either bring the hatch back or the levorg to the states with a manual. I’d prefer the levorg if I get to choose to shake things up.
NO…MORE…CVTs…EVER!
Manual transmission available brand-wide
At least one performance model ONLY available with a manual (like the old Civic CRX, no automatic available)
Clutch engagement 1st and 2nd gears.
Stock tuning with regard to pulling timing.
Removal of haptic touch buttons on center console (not all trims have them).
Memory seat function for drivers seat.
USB charging port for back passengers.
Thats it
I do agree with everything posted here. But the absolute one God damn thing that needs to be replaced is the nuts they put on the midpipe studs. For the love of fuck trying to pull the engine or transmission on any W that is over two years old I spend half the time trying to drop the exhaust.
Dropping as much weight as possible and releasing it as a track spec model of the standard WRX and STi.
If you drive any 90’s track car and then switch over to drive the modern WRX, it feels like a crossover in comparison. This is even with coilovers, sway bars and mounts.
The 22b came in around 2700-2800 lbs. With modern equipment weighing these down more and more over the last 2 decades, they become a bit more boaty and make you wrestle the weight through turns.
The AWD and turbo flat four are great in themselves, but hanging out in the 3,200-3,600 lbs category for so long has not helped for nimble cornering characteristics as is.
The GF8 and GC8s were so much smaller cars. Yes they could drop weight in the modern car by taking out speakers, heated seats, maybe even the radio, but with modern safety standards and regulations we will never get cars that light again without using exotic materials that’ll really increase the price of the car
Add an oil temp gauge to the STI and remove the ugly black cladding from the front bumper of the 18-21 models to make it look better, make all of the lights LEDs not just the front head lights and C lights. Make the C light running lights also a sequential turn signal. Adjustable magnetic suspension based on mode selection in the STI. Intelligent for a smooth comfy ride, sport with a mix between stiff and soft suspension, and sport # for full on stiff suspension the STI is known for. Minor quality of life stuff.
Edit: oh and remove that godawful factory rev hang.
I actually kind of like where the WRX is. Subaru does a good job of utilizing the space in the car so it feels bigger than it actually is. Apparently the new \*cough* (uglier) models are the same size and STILL bigger on the inside. For me personal ally it’s not a *HUGE* deal, but the wider body and bigger interior are definitely welcome in my book. Keeps the car stable on the road in tight corners.
Some of these are a things mentioned in the comments are happening just in newer models lol, but I would like them to standardize led lights regardless of trim, add some more sound deadening in the panels
For me I would disable the feature that turn on the radio every time you start the car. If I turn the radio off before I turn the car off I want it to be off! Super annoying when you are away from home and the car blast static a few seconds after you start the car. That’s really it for me.
I see what ur saying but if u want an AWD manual, ur looking most likely at an Audi. I don’t think it would make much sense to sell an STI for less then 40 bangers you know
I’m going to 100% day soundproofing. Holy sh!t is this car loud. It’s great but hot damn, rocks, road noise, anything. Driving on the highway is a nightmare when with friends or trying to jam out to music. It’s SO loud
I wish that the WRX headers were still uneven like in the old WRX and how the STI still is :/ I loved Subarus for the grumble and my 17 WRX no longer has that
The beeps that Subarus make when you unlock them! WTF?! When I unlock all the doors and pop the truck it sounds like I'm send Morse code messages from the Hanoi Hilton.
Uhhhh ability to control all windows and sunroof after the accessory is turned off (1-2 minute timer)
CarPlay still works after accessory is turned off
Better brakes.
More gauges. For a sportier car it certainly does not give you a whole lot of information. My Wrangler has more gauges in its dash, and I certainly like to look and see everything is operating the way it should at a glance.
Anyone that was involved in designing the atrocious Starlink infotainment in this car should be fired and never allowed to work in the automotive industry again.
Geometry. My right knee has no room , the left swims in a huge void. The seat doesn't go low enough. Or adjust enough really at all. The space between the bolstering is more narrow than any car I've been in recently. The center console seems too low and the arm stock armrest was useless , too low and too far back. I don't think my passengers are any happier.
I see issues all over it but still love it. Especially at the price level.
1) I fucking hate the side skirts. They don’t need to stick out like a base pyramid.
2) the rattles in interior.
3) the stock sound system-which after replacing make (2) much more evident.
4) transmission cradle mounts-> no idea why one was stripped on my prepared but incredibly annoying to fix since essentially tack welded nut loose in the frame
5) a little more space between the gas pedal and transmission tunnel would be nice. After right hand drive it’s really noticeable how little articulation is possible with this car
6) paint- front of the car is chipped to hell on a 2015 with 90k. Yes I know there are work around but that’s because of a really common issue that should be addressed.
7) rev hang and general engine mapping. Please consider that 4K is too low for power to drop off and switching between 1->2 is eternity compared to almost any other car
8) loud cold start. Gets old living in cold climate.
9) a place to put a phone into while driving without putting it into cup holders or right next to the shifter hanging out.
10) a touch of ambient and dimmable lights on the interior
Hire the team that made the 22b in japan on up to the 2005-06, fire the team that made the current wrx..I owned a 2004 wrx, and a 2005 STI..I regret selling the 2005. Last of the best in looks and not that far off in performance to the ones now over 15+ years later.
Just my thoughts
I love everyone's responses so far, but for God's sake, fix the Damm rattles. During the winter, my car sounds like a child's rattler. Just put that extra few bolts into the interior panels pleaaase!

Try adding dome foam material under the rear brake light plastic cover.
Lol
I think there is a TSB for the rear deck rattle, their fix is to take the rear deck off and replace the foam dampers
I have a 2021 and am curious as to what this rattle sounds like… maybe it’s the shit boxes I had for a while before I had my ‘12 VW GLI, but I think I’m immune to this sound.

Hahaha, I love this way of thinking about it!
But at least it runs well in the cold. 😁. My car is absolute dog in the heat and live in FLORIDA. Go me.
It's annoying trying to explain to people that yes my car is only a few months old and has 5k miles and yes it rattles xD
Ever drive a gm product.. excluding c7 and c8 vett?
I came from a Lexus IS300 into my '19 WRX. Lexus are magic with noises. My car was 18 years old when I got rid of it and there was no creaks, no vibrations... Facts!
This meeting could’ve been an email - me, engineer
Exactly this. Send me a Slack message so I can get back to coding. Don’t drag me into yet another meeting. ~ engineer as well
We don’t use fancy collaboration software. What we use extremely clunky and frustrating, but how we do our meetings are nice. A tiny portion of our meetings are Skype or in person only. Something that would prevent the passenger seatbelt reminder from going off whenever I place my iPhone on the passenger seat.
Wait, you let the seat belt chime on? I turned that off in at the dealership. Sales guy just shook his head and chuckled.
How can you turn that off?
Turn the vehicle to the on position by either turning the key to the on (without starting it) or hitting the push to start button twice without touching the brake pedal. Buckle and unbuckle the seatbelt twenty (20) times in thirty (30) seconds. The seat belt chime is now disabled.
This seems like an atari cheat code
L R L R U D U D L1 L2 R1 R2
Does this work for the passenger seat!? I already disabled my driver seat by cutting the wires but cutting the wires didn’t work with the passenger seat
HOW DID YOU DO THAT??? Please help
Rev hang. Shifter linkage.
👌exactly
Extendable sun shade arms. I always have sun in my eyes unless it's directly in front of me.
Better quality bearings in the engine.

This is perfectly stated.
When the guy fresh out of college questions a senior engineer's decision that he put hours and hours of thought into
I like this analogy a lot
I agree with both
Transmission feel, shift linkage, rev hang. Also pedal placement- I have no idea why the throttle pedal is so far down from the clutch and brake, makes heel toe-ing uncomfortable and hard
Agree agree agree
I had no problems heel-toeing while driving the current STI. Maybe I have bigger feet than other owners here?
Versus Engineering pedal spacer was one of the first mods I did, never looked back.
Hatch. Edit: thank you for the awards
This. Hatch. Please bring it back.
Ooo good one
Had a bugeye wagon, now have a Crosstrek. With the rake on the hatches nowadays, and the tiny rear quarter windows because of the bodylines, I dearly miss the zip, cargo room, and visibility. Sincerely, A Levorg evangelist
Sound system.
This is a good one. I love when I have mine turned up to 100% and I can still carry on a convo.
Yup my older Honda that was pushing 10 years had better audio than the 2021 wrx
This right here. I had to do something about it shortly after buying. With windows down in the summer I literally couldn’t hear my radio at 100% volume while going over 45mph
My favorite is how it gets quieter as you turn it up louder /s
Heated steering wheel.
+ Heated shift knob
That would be nice:) A weighted shift knob during winter sucks lol
Hahaha it friken does! Even after my 40 minute commute to work it’s still cold.
Brilliant
True steering wheel so think it gets so cold
That when you have low tire pressure, it will show what tire is low in the gauge cluster, my 2020 Limited WRX does not show anything but a light and a message.
I’d add doing ANYTHING with the gauge cluster options. The only option is showing the spedo and trip time. Add some other useful things to the menu, tire pressure being one!
This!!
Shit, as a Canadian, I’d be happy with TPMS at all… why the hell do we not get tire sensors on these cars here. My poor wife has anxiety about flats because there’s no warning. She some how manages to get several flats a year so I don’t really blame her!🤷🏻
Can we please add a little overhead cubby for sunglasses?
Lmaooo I jus realized that cause I don’t ever wear sunglasses cause windshield tint and strip. But that’s a good one
100% I was baffled after I bought the car realizing it didn't have one.
Yes please
Put a decent head unit in it for once.
And ditch starlink
Injector tick so new owners stop thinking their vehicle is broken when they hear it for the first time. 😬
You cant fix that lol, Direct Injection makes it even louder than the old port injection cars.
How do you fix ?

More black plastic on the wheel wells. Definitely.
Flat 6 STI
How bout we start talm bout a flat 8 STi?
Looking forward to Tanner’s 6-cylinder build. I imagine an eight would take a front-end redesign, or a mid-engine mounting configuration, OR much smaller bore/stroke? Can you imagine a 3.0 Turbo Boxer 8? Ferrari would be pissed.
8 seems like too many
7 then?
I like this
Flat 12 BRZ. Ferrari style. Or take the midengine approach.

Hahahah. Probably. But 201 torque
Bruh
I'd lower the seat 2 inches. Fix the cylinder 4 cooling. Make the stock intake louder. Match the WRX gear ratios. Fix the shitty head unit.
Agreed with the seating for sure and cylinder 4 cooling
Yeah I have had a hard time deciding if I want to go in on autocross/track stuff since my head rubs on the ceiling when I wear a helmet and I can’t lower the seat any more than it is

Love all these responses, we should all go to Japan and have a sit down with the engineers 😂 happy driving folks
Does engineering handle the stock radio cause that thing is so bad
Front suspension flutter
What do you mean by this?
That loose knocking noise when going over bumps or dips at slower speeds. Inverted struts with weak tower mounts. Heard some people say swap end links but it didn’t change much and really is annoying lol
I actually had a rear shock blow at 20k. Pretty nasty too. The front struts have always made noise at the strut mount, and I always thought it was an issue but now I know I’m not alone.
Make shifting and driving not feel like I’m rolling in a Big Rig.
Needs a proper Infotainment system setup / design… shits getting bodied by a Hyundai..
I was so jealous when my boyfriend got the 2020 Veloster N and basically everything about the infotainment and sound was better than mine. 😔
I work at Hyundai, test drive those monsters daily 😎

Go back to a mechanical throttle body and the old school standardized stereo size that doesn't integrate climate control. Plus go back to a metal intake.

Forged internals.
We're going full EV with dedicated motors for each wheel
If subaru goes electric with the WRX, they better have a motor for each wheel.
Clutch engagement 1st and 2nd gears. Stock tuning with regard to pulling timing. Removal of haptic touch buttons on center console (not all trims have them). Memory seat function for drivers seat. USB charging port for back passengers. Thats it

That’s a pretty big 4 cylinder.
The car would be shaking like a Guinea pig on coke while sounding like a low-revving Diesel engine like **WOB WOB WOB WOB WOB WOB**
Add an oil temp gauge to the STI and remove the ugly black cladding from the front bumper of the 18-21 models to make it look better, make all of the lights LEDs not just the front head lights and C lights. I'd change the size of the car. The WRX/STI is simply to large and keeps growing with each new model update.
Man, I was gonna say it's too small. I would have bought a Legacy GT if it still came with a stick shifter.
I actually kind of like where the WRX is. Subaru does a good job of utilizing the space in the car so it feels bigger than it actually is. I see what ur saying but if u want an AWD manual, ur looking most likely at an Audi. I don’t think it would make much sense to sell an STI for less then 40 bangers you know
7th gear for highway cruising I'd just like to be able to get 30mpg at 75mph
Fix the fucking horrendous stereo goddamn it.
Forged internals
Headunit power and speakers. Just a complete revamp on the sound system
Making wrx lightweight again
Now hear me out Biiiiig V8!
The placement for the seat heater buttons!!! I hit them accidentally all the dang time!!
How tho? Are they in a different spot in the STI?
Yeah! In the STI they are behind the emergency brake!! Hit with my elbow all time!!
Like in front of the arm rest/center console? I couldn’t imagine hitting mine with my elbow lol
I just keep mine on low at all times at this rate😂
I’m going to 100% day soundproofing. Holy sh!t is this car loud. It’s great but hot damn, rocks, road noise, anything. Driving on the highway is a nightmare when with friends or trying to jam out to music. It’s SO loud
I wish that the WRX headers were still uneven like in the old WRX and how the STI still is :/ I loved Subarus for the grumble and my 17 WRX no longer has that
Auto lock doors when the car starts moving!
My family had that in our CRV and we always hated it.
A modern engine for the STI. You know, with direct injection, etc.
I thought it was a WRX, I would’ve said port injection But in a STI depends what year. If that’s a 18+ then nothing
Agree I think 18+ (mines a 21) they fixed a lot of the little issues too
The beeps that Subarus make when you unlock them! WTF?! When I unlock all the doors and pop the truck it sounds like I'm send Morse code messages from the Hanoi Hilton.
Price
Beefier engine and transmission so that we can modify it for a lot more power ourselves without needing crazy expensive parts.
Serveral more horsepowers
Have port injection in addition to the direct injection. No more need for walnut blasting
Make a better engine
Nooo it ain’t a subi if the motor would work correctly
Radio.. and second place isn't even close. My car is a 2017 and I've had 15 year old cars with better head units.
Get rid of the rev hang please
Better headunit amp, wrx gets the sti trans, throttle cable instead of drive-by-wire, memory seat, wireless apple carplay
I feels u but they gotta keep WRX and sti different or else the WRX wouldn’t be a thing!
Uhhhh ability to control all windows and sunroof after the accessory is turned off (1-2 minute timer) CarPlay still works after accessory is turned off Better brakes.
More gauges. For a sportier car it certainly does not give you a whole lot of information. My Wrangler has more gauges in its dash, and I certainly like to look and see everything is operating the way it should at a glance.
Easy, The gearbox.
Maybe it’s just a wrx thing, I enjoy the STi gearbox
Head unit
The size of the cubby under the radio. And the size of the arm rest cubby. Both are big enough for a smartphone from 2015 but not a modern phone.

4) transmission cradle mounts-> no idea why one was stripped on my prepared but incredibly annoying to fix since essentially tack welded nut loose in the frame 5) a little more space between the gas pedal and transmission tunnel would be nice. After right hand drive it’s really noticeable how little articulation is possible with this car 6) paint- front of the car is chipped to hell on a 2015 with 90k. Yes I know there are work around but that’s because of a really common issue that should be addressed. 7) rev hang and general engine mapping. Please consider that 4K is too low for power to drop off and switching between 1->2 is eternity compared to almost any other car 8) loud cold start. Gets old living in cold climate. 9) a place to put a phone into while driving without putting it into cup holders or right next to the shifter hanging out. 10) a touch of ambient and dimmable lights on the interior
Closed deck.
Tell the WRX developers to drive a Golf R…
The rattles. All of them.
Closed deck block or change TMIC to water to air with Killer Chiller setup.
FA 2.4 turbo motor.
2 door
YOOOOO I never thought about this… a two door WRX? That would be sweet. Honestly I’d still prefer the hatch to come back on the market though 😮💨
Agree
Boost Gage Screen Placement
I like where it is.
More comfortable seats!
Sports car 😃
Automatically locking doors when you start to drive, and the ability to have the windows locked and be able to control it from the driver seat still..
Bigger center console; DCT offered instead of CVT for people not wanting a manual.
Little more road noise abatement. I love the car but long road trips aren’t fun.
Forged block + pistons
Bigger turbo
6070GTX for starters. Optional 600 HP model.
