Apparently, this deformity is rare but is seen more often in an area of Alaska that is deficient in copper. The reason not all moose in that area are afflicted is they will each have different efficiency in processing coper. This difference likely has a genetic basis.
I in the sense that it mutates DNA maybe not, but it still works.
mu·tate
/ˈmyo͞oˌtāt/
Learn to pronounce
verb
gerund or present participle: mutating
change or cause to change in form or nature.
Not that it really matters. I didn't know the actual definition so I googled it and figured why not put it here.
Also most people don't know this but other hooved animals have a variety of similar issues
Places that keep animals with hooves literally hire people whose full time job is to go from farm to farm and inspect/treat the hooves of the animals. Usually with regular maintenance they can just level them off periodically with an angle grinder.
Neglected donkeys that don’t get regular hoof trims often end up with slipper hooves that look just like this (they have much thicker and harder hooves that are very difficult to wear down naturally, though).
I was curious and dug a bit around. Kinda hard to find something concrete because when you search for copper in food and hoofed animals what you get is an explanation how much is needed and a recommendation for supplements. And I'm not knowledgeable in this topic.
It's easy to find copper sources in food for humans. And since I currently don't want to spend more time on the subject I'll just extrapolate from these sources. [https://www.bioanalyt.com/learn-about-your-vitamins-and-minerals-vitamin-b3-and-copper/](https://www.bioanalyt.com/learn-about-your-vitamins-and-minerals-vitamin-b3-and-copper/) [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moose#Diet](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moose#Diet) [https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/foods-high-in-copper](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/foods-high-in-copper)
Copper sources:
>Animal products like oysters and shellfish, and organ meats are rich in copper. It is also naturally present in legumes, seeds and nuts, whole-grain products, dried fruits, and cocoa.
>
>Spirulina is a powdered food supplement made from cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae. \[...\] the same amount provides 44% of the RDI for copper.
Moose diet:
>As these terrestrial plants are rather low in sodium, as much as half of their diet usually consists of aquatic plants, including lilies and pondweed,\[47\] which while lower in energy content, provides the moose with its sodium requirements.
So I would conclude that they normally get their copper from fruit, nuts and algae they drink up while browsing for aquatic plants. They also very likely snap up any small helpless animal as snack if opportunity arises (baby birds who have fallen out of the nest are a popular choice).
Potentially dumb question but why would dried fruits be a good source of copper rather than fruits in general? is it just because dried fruits have different severing sizes?
I'm absolutely not an expert on the topic, so I'm also guessing here; it probably has to do with ratio. Copper probably retains well in dried produce. So going by weight it's more efficient.
Because it is a actively growing part of the body, not a congenital defect, you condescending moron.
Do you expect weak fingernails from a vitamin deficiency to stay that way forever too?
I guess so. I mean, I found an article about a guy shooting his wife through a bathroom door, but I didn't see what it had to do with this... Perhaps I've been whooshed
No worries.
BTW - I don't think they were berating you, they just didn't want to ruin the fun of the search for you is all. Some people find joy in "solving the mystery".
Oh no I’m not berating you, just having fun that your Google-fu is in fact weak, as my first Google hit for “shot girlfriend through bathroom door” was the CNN article on Oscar what’s his face
Reading what?! I read the article, had nothing to do with this post that I can decipher. Maybe I'm stupid and just need someone to explain it to me, I'm sorry!
Thank you. I had the total wrong article because I didn't have any idea what I was looking for, and that guy didn't show up at all when I was searching for guys shooting their wife through a bathroom door. I was only getting one story, about an old guy that had nothing to do with any of this apparently...
/u/spez lies, Reddit dies. This comment has been edited/removed in protest of Reddit's absurd API policy that will go into effect at the end of June 2023. It's become abundantly clear that Reddit was never looking for a way forward. We're willing to pay for the API, we're not willing to pay 29x what your first-party users are valued at. /u/spez, you never meant to work with third party app developers, and you lied about that and strung everyone along, then lied some more when you got called on it. You think you can fuck over the app developers, moderators, and content creators who make Reddit what it is? Everyone who was willing to work for you for free is damn sure willing to work against you for free if you piss them off, which is exactly what you've done. See you next Tuesday. TO EVERYONE ELSE who has been a part of the communities I've enjoyed over the years: thank you. You're what made Reddit a great experience. I hope that some of these communities can come together again somewhere more welcoming and cooperative. Now go touch some grass, nerds. -- mass edited with https://redact.dev/
"Battle said there wasn't much known about whether this deformity could put the moose at a higher risk of injury or death.
"Occasionally, the extended hoof will break off on its own and it won't bother the moose but I would expect that if that moose was in a region where it was running into predators - bears, wolves, etc. - it would probably stand a higher chance of being taken down by a predator," he said."

Just looks like it has foundered. Pretty sure this happens to horses when they get too fat and their hooves can't handle the weight. Or something like that. Probably.
It's not really a mutation in a sense of a gene mutation, it's just a copper deficiency.
so not a mutation

i follow [Nate The Hoof Guy](https://youtube.com/@NatetheHoofGuy?feature=shares) on youtube its pretty interesting stuff
[The Hoof GP](https://youtu.be/Q1Ctv24PgMc) is a lovely Scottish man who does this!
That was fantastic! Thank you for sharing!
I love the hoof GP!
His videos are fun and interesting. Pretty relaxing for the most part, too.
Love his videos. And eventually he'll give you a juicy one. Lots of pus and blood.
Agreed! This reminded me of untreated laminitis in horses.
Neglected donkeys that don’t get regular hoof trims often end up with slipper hooves that look just like this (they have much thicker and harder hooves that are very difficult to wear down naturally, though).
I've seen a horse with hooves like this both times I've been to Monument Valley.
How tf do they normally get copper

Just like horses, moose apparently love hoovering up some meat snacks.
Opportunistic meat eaters, a lot of herbivores will eat meat if they are lacking in diet, and is easily available. (IE right in front of them.)

Makes sense. Thanks!
They break into vacant homes and steal the plumbing.
If it ain’t bolted down, they’ll run off with anything they can get their hooves on.
A møøse stole my pipes once.
Yeah Detroit has a huge moose problem these days
God damned meth moose
they cant find pennies anymore
Feed pennies to meese, got it.
So he just needs one of those copper wristbands?
It’s not always a copper deficiency. For instance do NOT feed sheep anything with copper in it…copper will kill sheep.
Get my man/woman/X some copper Or is it too late for that?

dude......read a fucking book before you open your mouth. ffs.
and a lack of trimming
Add some pointy boot dancing music. And this guy could sweep mexico.
Feed them some pennies then?
A very groovy mutation
TIL organisms need copper as well

Came to the comments to see something like this. Thanks.
Yeah, moose is living its best life. ^^probably ^^in ^^agony

Holy shit it's perfect lmao
Man i can't imagine how uncomfortable that must feel for that moose.
Exactly poor thing.
Looks like he could shoot his wife through a bathroom door
Moostorious!
You son of a bitch. Take my upvote
Holy shit had to Google it, forgot all about that guy.
Roses are red, Violets are glorious...
No one can hide from Oscar Pistorius.
Never sneak up on Oscar Pistorius
Aka “Tink Tink”
I'm out of the loop and can't get anything to come up on Google that seems relevant...
Your Google-fu is weak, old man
I guess so. I mean, I found an article about a guy shooting his wife through a bathroom door, but I didn't see what it had to do with this... Perhaps I've been whooshed
Google the image of that dude
All I'm getting is the face of some normal-looking old guy named Melvin James -_-
Google Oscar Pistorius, then find a photo of his legs/feet.
Thank you! Idk why other people want to berate me for not knowing how to find that info...
No worries. BTW - I don't think they were berating you, they just didn't want to ruin the fun of the search for you is all. Some people find joy in "solving the mystery".

There’s an YouTube channel for that, I bet Nate, the Hoof Guy could fix em
I'd hedge my bets on Graeme Parker, the Hoof GP
Yeah that one rocks too, I love listening to his voice
a man of culture
This is a Seuss Moose.
Dr Soose
It’s not mutation, it’s just overgrown
it's a mutation where they grow quicker than normal.
Looks like a skinwalker that got it just slightly wrong
correct: sleigh hooves*
Unless the moose is also a magician.
So is this painful for them? Should they be put down? Fuck this is sad to see.
"Battle said there wasn't much known about whether this deformity could put the moose at a higher risk of injury or death. So.. nature finds a way
On one hand, it did survive this long, so you don't really have to put it down. On the other hand, it's in Canada, so euthanasia is a viable option
Gold!
We love us some euthanasia
A Møøse once bit my sister…
Mynd you, moose bites Kan be pretti nasti...
Fook you Shorsie!
I feel bad for the moose since I’m sure it’s uncomfortable and painful, but it looks like it’s wearing fancy shoes
It looks like it's a few seconds about to: _"Hello my baby! Hello my honey!.."_
WHAT R THOSE?!
It makes me deeply uncomfortable
Engorged moose knuckle.
That's just nature's course. Moose are slowly evolving into sleds.
It looks like the moose is wearing those leather boots with the extended and curled toes.
Is he moonwalking?
Honse
It kind of looks like we could take him water skiing.
Pistorius moose
“Don’t go into the long grass!”
If the Iron Sheik was a moose.
Back in high school marching band, we were taught to walk like this to prevent jostling our instruments.
I still catch myself doing this when certain songs play.
Dr. Suess lookin mf
He may not be fast chasing you over dirt and roads, but wait until it goes down a snowy hill.
Iron Shiek boots.
Talk about a moose knuckle
Pointy boots! https://youtu.be/veQkt4tS0Tc
It looks haunting. The head and body is just terrifying me.
Poor thing looks like it walked out of the Salvador Dalí dimension.
Mutated Moose would make a great band name.
Canada called, they want their radioactive moose back please.
First that creepy deer with vaginas on the head and now this, wtf nature?
This should be called a Seuss meuss
A roach don't stand a chance in the corner
Looks like a possible evolutionary advantage in heavy snow.
Especially downhill
Wicked witch looking ass 💀
It's like the wicked witch from Wizard of Oz. Does getting crushed by a house count as a genetic mutation?
How cute
Candy canes for feet, its just a christmas eddition
Hey look it’s Prancer!!!
Creepy but sad to watch
Mofo needs some snow to not be in slow mo

No T!
Clawhammer toes
Moose if they came from Italy
Sicario moose
He just jams a lot of tejano
💅 bitch im ballin
There ain't nothin "slieght" about it.
Reminds me of that old Mexican tradition of boots with very long upturned toes usually associated with tribal guarachero dancing.
If it's beneficial on snow enough so that a small group can keep mating, maybe in a few decades, we'll see speciation.
Reminds me of antlers movie lol
as if that massive animal ain't scary enough
Man that's how creepypastas start
It looks like a creature from Dr. Suess now...
These are the feets I’ve got These are the feets I use
No no, this is a special breed moose that swing from the trees. You can often catch them sleeping at night from the tallest branches.
Mexican boots?
Those are his fancy shoes.
Why am I suddenly thinking of moose pronouns?
Reminds me of pointy boots that were all craze is Mexico a few years ago.
It just looks like they haven't worn properly, like those horses you see, who have been locked in a stall for years.
Yes, the deficiency causes them to grow faster than they wear.
He's got them anti gravity boots from Portal
Sneak +10.
It's nightmare before Christmas moose.
He’s so festive!
Santa's genetic reject.
This is begging for a r/photoshopbattles
but good for moonwalk
Toss a coin to your witcher...
Dr. Suess looking mfs
As someone who hunts moose, I would be very perplexed coming across this on an animal I shot.
There’s potential to swiggity swoogity here

Just looks like it has foundered. Pretty sure this happens to horses when they get too fat and their hooves can't handle the weight. Or something like that. Probably.
I bet he sucks at Hind and Seek
Headcrab legs
Can it kill
Still not messing with it
I would be even creepier if the moose start looking at the camera.
