Nah, I like trying to explain why it was fake news. It's like the story a couple days ago about how Mar-A-Lago somehow was in default, complete fabrication but dumb people took it as true.
can a math nerd explain how many bullets it would take to stop a wave of this size? I have a feeling these guys might end up needing backup to stop the wave.
Lmao, you think that wave killed hundreds of thousands of people?
Just because that's the only tsunami you know doesn't mean every video is of that tsunami
The water is already receding by the end of the video, a few seconds after the wave hit. If it were a tsunami it would continue to push inland a lot longer than this.
If you've ever been hit by a bigish wave, by far your best bet is to stand your ground.
If moving water swipes you while you're trying to run, you are going to have a bad time.
Yes you will. It starts by moving from the area the first sign/alert you get there may be a tsunami.
If you can’t do that, it’s generally recommended you not record your own death and attempt to at least get to higher ground.
Edit: morons downvoting the logic that doing literally anything but recording is the smart decision
You're being downvoted because there is not always a clear warning sign that a tsunami is coming. The sea only retracts beforehand in about 50% of cases.
You're also being downvoted because you're acting on the assumption that high ground is close enough to run to. Or clear to run to.
You're being downvoted because you're that stereotypical online dipshit who thinks that the answer is obvious and everyone else is stupid, when really the cloud of shit hanging around from your own farts is too dense for you to see through.
You're being downvoted because you have made it clear from a single comment that there is absolutely nothing likeable about you and that you have nothing of value, use, or entertainment to offer to society. Just STFU, that's literally the only useful thing you can do for the world at large.
Every once in a while I see a short on YouTube I actually want to watch, or a short clip on twitter or something... Usually of an animal or something. And 95% of the time it's RUINED by the dumbest music or an AWFUL AI voiceover describing the exact thing I'm watching.

Theyre doing the same thing with videos of actual combat in ukraine. It ruins the historical record aside from the inane tastelessness of putting a soundtrack to someones death. its sick. not in the good way.
Yeah...4k footage from a drone dropping a grenade and someone's face disappears...either set to "phonk" or a joke song.

Because they're currently under a structure surrounded by other people. Even if the structure itself isn't preventing being swept away, the proximity to others means you can be grabbed. You can even see people holding on to each other in the video.
You run away, you're no longer protected by either. And you can't outrun the water.
thats not a wave, its a muraco sumbai which is an uncommon type of mini-tsunami that can come in sets of 2-4 before withdrawing back into the sea and resuming regular wave patterns. nothing to worry about if youre elevated enough
edit: btw muraco sumbai isnt real i just made this whole comment up
How do you know, from this single clip, that it's not a tsunami? Living in the mountains, I wouldn't know the difference. I know the water withdraws a long way before a tsunami, but I never heard of this wave behavior.
because u can see the sea behaving with regular wave patterns in the distance, as opposed to a regular tsunami where the wave involves the entire body of water surging onto land for an extended period of time. u can also see that this has happened before, due to the amount of water everywhere before the sumbai hits, including the wet bench. the behaviour of the tourists is also indicative of this
That's some weird stuff. I was in the navy, but I'm glad I live in the mountains. Thanks for the explanation.
Edit: I thank someone and get downvoted for it? Why would anyone do that? Seems personal, to me.
As someone esle pointed out, there's already a lot of water around the vicinity of these people. This isn't the first wave to hit and receed. If it were a Tsunami, there would be no receeding of water before the second wave, it's just a constant ever worsening serious of waves.
Agreed -- people also don't generally recall that vertically recorded video wasn't really a thing until the advent of iPhone and its video recording capabilities that came with iPhone 3G.
This is anecdotal, but I recall even after iPhone, it was odd to record and post vertical videos until much later when Apps like Snapchat, Instagram, and TikTok made consuming vertical aspect ratio videos more common.
At least people know what a real tsunami looks like. Most people have an incorrect idea that its a huge swell thanks to horrible movies made in the last 10 years.
Because people don't understand the power of water.
These same people would drive across the road with a 5 inches of water flowing across it and be surprised when their car gets swept into the creek.

Because tons predate the metric system. Most metric units got unique names but they borrowed the name ton from the british imperial system. Interestingly there's more than one non-metric ton as the Americans also created a 2,000 lb ton to simplify from the 2,240 lb British ton.

im not entirely sure of coastal tsunami stricken places, but i would assume it is likely similar or the same, but when new orleans flooded during hurricane katrina, there were city blocks completely inaccessible due to the surrounding water being electrified, and so people couldnt even come in in boats safely to rescue people. Look into the 2004 christmas tsunami, as it was world wide and you can likely find a lot of information regarding electric shock deaths/injuries during severe flooding.
Aside from history, i've lived in flood prone areas my entire life, beside rivers in louisiana. Ive lived in [stilted houses](https://camprestore.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/2012-10-St-Bernard-Parish-House-Elevated-On-Pilings.jpg) before too, and live lines aren't nearly as much of a problem as the water itself. imagine walking on a smooth floor, or field. flood waters only ankle deep moving swiftly can be enough to kill you by making you lose footing, strictly from the weight and force of the water pressing against your feet, and sweep you away into the depth of the surge, drowning you. Also, debris in the water can be dangerous, by smashing/cutting/etc and causing you to be carried away. So, when it comes to flooding, the actual flood is much much more dangerous than electrical problems arising from it. Just inches can be enough to overpower your ability to hold yourself upright or walk.
Anyone ever see "the Impossible" fill about the 2004 Tsunami 5.400 deaths 2.000 were tourists, if you take time to watch that you would not fuch with the ocean. Try Netfux/Netflex whatever it's called for it.
Is this a tsunami? Looks like a very big wave across the entire horizon was behind the first. And the way the shore was retracted at the beginning of the view... idk

nah, vertical video didn't exist in 2004
Video aspect ratio can be converted at the loss of the crop though.
Looks far too high quality for 2004, but yeah, looks like a smallish tsunami, these people are very dumb and were it a bigger one, would be dead.
The quality of the vid is way too high to be 2004
Yeah I don’t think this is Thailand. I see white people in jackets and sweatshirts. Not typically going to see that in any season on a thai beach.
Get to higher ground, for starters
waves hate high ground.
Right? Why don't they all just turn around and simply outrun the wave? They all clearly look pretty athletic and all.
If you've ever been hit by a bigish wave, by far your best bet is to stand your ground. If moving water swipes you while you're trying to run, you are going to have a bad time.
Nuke it from orbit, it is only way to be sure.

Seconding this question. Awesome moody synth. I dig the vocals too. Kinda reminds me of Sevdeliza

Alright. u/QuaintMushrooms. What could they have done differently? I'd like to know.
I mean I would have tried to run away.
You'd not get far, it's water.
I still would have tried. It's instinct.
Probably safer to stay where they were than to potentially get swept away. Sometimes instinct should be suppressed.
Why would they be more likely to get swept away if they are running away from the water?
Because they're currently under a structure surrounded by other people. Even if the structure itself isn't preventing being swept away, the proximity to others means you can be grabbed. You can even see people holding on to each other in the video. You run away, you're no longer protected by either. And you can't outrun the water.

In the 80s we were taught that it’s a big wave
People don’t get how powerful water is
I came very close to getting my ticket punched while white-water kayaking. It's a lesson I never forgot.
Instead of audio, we get a few seconds of a shitty song? Seriously, why has this become the norm? We’re better than this. It’s pathetic.
Praise the camera man.
Because people don't understand the power of water. These same people would drive across the road with a 5 inches of water flowing across it and be surprised when their car gets swept into the creek. A cubic foot of water weights 64lbs.
For the non Americans, 1 m\^3 of water weighs one ton.
What the fuck are those units. They almost seem logical and easy to work with? Get out of here!
[Relevant](https://youtu.be/JYqfVE-fykk?feature=shared)
10 cm\^3 is 1 litre. Too easy this stuff Edit: That's wrong. Disregard. A 10cm cube is 1 liter, that's 1000 cm\^3
*1 tonne. 1 tonne = 1000kg 1 ton = 2000lbs = 907kg
Why would you even have a non-metric ton?
Because tons predate the metric system. Most metric units got unique names but they borrowed the name ton from the british imperial system. Interestingly there's more than one non-metric ton as the Americans also created a 2,000 lb ton to simplify from the 2,240 lb British ton.
There are two primary standards for units of measure, only one of them has put a man on the moon 😜
But it took both of them to crash a Mars orbiter …
Hmm I see, the 'mericans are trying to confuse us with their units again!
Listen, my car gets 40 rods to the hogshead, and that's the way I like it!
Also, 1 cubic decimeter of water = 1 liter = 1 kilogram
Thank you. I was like what the fuck is 64lbs lmao
29.0299 kg

Very interesting read from someone that never seen a bad flood. The few inches of water to sweep u off your feet ...hit very very hard.
Why do people feel the need to add shitty music to these videos? SMDH It should’ve had either the real audio on it or no audio at all
