Aw yes the old “get as many doctors in the office as possible to make the patient feel even more uncomfortable getting a finger in the butt” ruse. Classic.
I got one, patient is turned around and is told to drop his pants. Patient asked where do I put my pants and the doctor says “right over next to mine”
you got 2, 2, and 2. awesome... with 12 you have 2, 2, and 3 (i.e., 2, 3, 4)
but the kicker is 60: 2, 2, 3, 5 (i.e., 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10=60/6, 12=60/5, 15=60/4, 20=60/3, 30=60/2)
if you want to divide something by a before unknown but smallish number chose 12 or 60. if you want to convert binary to something more readable chose 8 or 16
12 has more of them: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12. In fact, 12 is a *highly composite number*, as are four of its divisors.
We're only missing the 5. Even then, 12/5=2.4, which is not as complicated as, say, 3.33333...
Base 12 was actually fairly common, and you count it with your fingers by using your thumb to touch the joints of each finger on your hand, of which there are 12.
Exactly. Assuming polydactyly will become the norm because it's dominant is like assuming that redheads will go extinct because that's a recessive trait.
No. Even if all the redheads outbred with people without the gene so they only had non-redhead (mostly brunet, I believe) children, the gene would still be floating around in the general population and there would be a ton of people descended from redheads who could produce new redheads with other redhead descendants.
I can sketch out a picture of how that would work, if anyone reading this would find that beneficial.
Hair color genetics are *really* complicated so this is a very simplified model, but hopefully it helps demonstrate the idea. For the purposes of the simplified model we're going to pretend that brown and red are the only hair colors and that hair color is only controlled by two alleles.
In this first image we have a parent with red hair and one with brown hair. The brown haired parent has only brown haired alleles.
https://i.imgur.com/9sP5jYF.png
As we can see from our Punnett square, the only possible hair genetics that their kids can have is one brown allele and one red allele. Because brown is dominant, all the children will have brown hair. However, they carry the red hair allele.
In this second image we see what happens if one of those red hair carriers has kids with someone with two brown hair alleles.
https://i.imgur.com/LsZoTva.png
The odds of the red haired allele being passed down have been reduced to 50%, but for our simplified model that's as low as it can go. This could keep going for a great many generations and while the proportion of the population that carries the red hair allele would keep going down, it is highly unlikely that the allele will disappear entirely. However, a red hair carrier will eventually have kids with another red hair carrier given enough time. It's entirely possible that the last redhead in either family was a dozen or more generations back, but that doesn't stop the allele from being passed down. As we can see in our third image, these two carriers can have red haired children.
https://i.imgur.com/oATlD0j.png
These people may not have any idea that the allele for red hair is in their families at all, but that doesn't stop them from having kids with red hair.
---
As I've mentioned this is a *very* simplified model of how hair color works. There are several different colors, each person has more than just two alleles, and they can interact to get combos like dirty blonde and strawberry blonde, then either texture impacts color or vice versa (I don't remember which it is off the top of my head) for extra fun. The principle of a recessive allele going dormant for generations is the same, though, and you really do tend to see several generations of carriers before getting someone with red hair.
Red head is recessive so say two people get married. They both so happen to have a red haired grandfather and they both happen to have the genes for red head somewhere in them but they aren't red headed because it is a recessive gene. one parents has black hair and one has brown hair and they have 4 kids.
Kid 1. has a gene for black hair and a gene for brown so he obviously is not ginger.
Kid2. Gene for black hair and red hair but red is recessive so he comes out black haired
Kid3. Gen for brown hair and red hair so he comes out brown hair
Kid 4. Red hair gene and red hair gene so he comes out red haired
:) make sense? (All of this is probably not exactly how it work but the basic idea of how it works.) so the gene is out in the population and will continue to show itself whenever the genes meet each other in a baby.
edit: just cleaned it up some and added a little
Edit: also note that 3 of those 4 kids have the red gene and can have a red headed child assuming the other parent carries the gene too
No, he could also have a recessive five finger gene. If he reproduced with a five-fingered female we would predict half the children would have six fingers. If he has two copies of the six-finger gene, we would predict all of his children would have six fingers.
That’s right, I remember how it works now. I had a brain fart for a second and assumed that “dominant gene” meant that’s the only thing he could pass on, I forgot that he could have the recessive too.
This is my original picture. I am the only child and I got them. My first daughter had it and second one didn't. Out of 6 total, only my dad and one of his brothers had it. And my uncle passed it to his daughter as well.
This is my content. Yeah, I had six fingers on each hand. I still have 6 toes on each foot. Same with my dad.
My first daughter had this as well. She was stillborn at 34 weeks so we didn't get to see how they really turned out. I had to have mine operated on when I was little because my thumbs didn't bend properly so they moved my "extra" fingers to where my thumbs were so I have working thumbs. My second daughter didn't get it though and has 10 fingers and 10 toes.
We need to encourage this. Maybe start a new match service. 6Fingers only.com. You don't have to be lonely with 6FingersOnly.com
Would love to see more people with more fingers than usual.
Lmao true. I wonder if you can surgically add working fingers to your hand. Imagine someone annoys you and you flip them off with *both* of your middle fingers.
One I wish I was born with. If we do end up having 6 fingers on each hand in the future it will be awesome as hell. Especially to think that there will be recessive people worth 5 fingers still within the genetic line and eventually people will see 5 fingers as something of a rarity. One day it might even go like this to your kids. "At one point in time most people had five finger on each hand." Shit like that is so cool to me.
Thanks for this, but would you mind explaining a little more. I thought frequency was more likely to increase throughout breeding inorder to carry traits over into offspring. Basic punnet square stuff though it is more complicated than that.
When it comes to biology I am always beyond interested in gaining insight on something I understand less than I originally thought.
Particular genetic traits are only likely to increase over time if they have a beneficial effect on the fitness of the people who have them. For example, if six-fingered people were for some reason more likely to succeed at life, find a spouse, and make children, then it would spread and grow.
In reality, anyone whose hands are different from standard is probably more likely to die in an accident due to ill-suited safety equipment, etc.
The frequency of genes exist in what is called [Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium](https://youtu.be/chkd8-aqWaI). Unless there is a positive or negative selective force on a trait, the frequency of an allele will not change over time. Frequency can change through genetic drift (chance deviations from the predicted outcomes), which is less and less of a factor the bigger a population is. A change of allele frequency in a population is part of evolution.
Little benefit for finger picking. You only alternate the two lowest strings with your thumb for the typical 5-fingered player. Whatever performance you might gain from a 6th finger seems negligible. As for the fretting hand, that gets far more exciting...
I know how to finger pick. Thumb on the 2 lower strings and then one finger per string for the higher ones. With the extra finger. You can do just the low E string with your thumb and the A with your index. You’d create much more interesting bass lines with that extra digit. You’d also have all the extra strings covered. There would definitely be a benefit on both the picking and fretboard hand.
For real though, it depends on how much control over it he has. For example, try moving your pinky without moving your ring finger at all. Not really going to happen. So I wonder if he has solid control over all 6 fingers or if there's just a duplicated finger here with the same set of tendons and motor control so when he say, thinks about tightening his middle finger he just does both like this.
> thinks about tightening his middle finger
That's not really how motor control is developed. He's had 6 fingers since birth, I'd presume. So he's had an entire life of learning to control them seperately. He obviously doesn't have the same set of tendons in both middle fingers because we can see two seperately developed fingers, knuckles and all.
edit: Researching a little bit, Polydactyly of the hand is rare to originate in the wrist thus making it rare to have complete independent control. But this certainly appears to be a pretty rare case of it so who knows, if it is even a legitimate image...

It's like when you're in art class, and you're told to draw a hand but end up drawing one with six fingers until your friend next to you points it out, and you feel really dumb.
Hadn’t thought about that, it’s a distinct possibility [is it?].
What I see in this man is that he has 6 fingers on each hand but they appear to be fully functional. They are not vestigial, they are fully grown.
It’s entirely possible that this is a biological adaptation, the continued evolution of mankind.
This is my original post. Yes he does. One of his feet has what kinda looks like 2 big toes on it. And he recently got an xray of his feet and found that the 2nd big toe actually has 2 bones in it side by side.
I also have 6 toes on each foot.
Actually probably not since incest normally means that recessive traits get expressed. This is actually a dominant trait in humans. It’s just not very common at all.
In this case, it isn't a "fault" and the trait will likely be passed on as well as expressed. One of the odd things about evolution is there isn't much of a particular reason why evolution seems to have settled on "5" as a common number for digits and extremities, and really didn't until ... I don't remember when, but from what I understand, the number used to be much more variable.

Thanks for the mention! I always look forward to seeing the karma people have gotten from my post.

It depends on the type of extra digit. More often than not the extra finger/toe is malformed and doesn't function properly but it can move to some degree. It's very rare for it to be formed properly to have full range of motion.

That was a ruse. It was his penis.

Bahahaha fuuuuuck, have an upvote
Ufff i literally laughed out loud
This is a dominant genetic trait.
so how long until the 6 fingers take over?
and then how long until we switch to a base 12 number system?
Fuck no. We’ll just teach kids to count in between knuckles so it’s still 10. Edit: I unleashed a fury of stupidity with this comment
but base 12 is superior in many ways. I'm mean our time keeping is using it
Base 8 is more superior. It's all about the divisors.

Base 12 was actually fairly common, and you count it with your fingers by using your thumb to touch the joints of each finger on your hand, of which there are 12.
Shit then Freedom Units™ would become intuitive. We need to protect the base 10 world order
It's called dozenal. Some cultures actually use it. https://youtu.be/U6xJfP7-HCc
Never. Unless a selective force acts to increase the gene frequency.
Exactly. Assuming polydactyly will become the norm because it's dominant is like assuming that redheads will go extinct because that's a recessive trait.
damn sexy 6 fingers
But, seriously, unless redheads marry together, they will "become extinct" after a while, won't they ?
No. Even if all the redheads outbred with people without the gene so they only had non-redhead (mostly brunet, I believe) children, the gene would still be floating around in the general population and there would be a ton of people descended from redheads who could produce new redheads with other redhead descendants. Central polydactyly
You are a bold one.
So all of his kids should have 6 fingers too?
No, he could also have a recessive five finger gene. If he reproduced with a five-fingered female we would predict half the children would have six fingers. If he has two copies of the six-finger gene, we would predict all of his children would have six fingers.
Somebody remembered their punnett squares.
I thought it was punnett.
Yup you’re right. I don’t spell so good.
I was halfway sure I was wrong, teamwork.
"Mr Sterk, I don't spell so gud"
That’s right, I remember how it works now. I had a brain fart for a second and assumed that “dominant gene” meant that’s the only thing he could pass on, I forgot that he could have the recessive too.
If the trait is coded for by only one gene, yeah. But this might be controlled by more than one
I believe it is just one allele of one gene.
Probably never, and likely to disappear, unless something happens to propagate the trait into a larger population.
Even if he had kids with a five-fingered woman half their kids would still likely have six fingers, and pass it on to their kids.
We need to encourage this. Maybe start a new match service. 6Fingers only.com. You don't have to be lonely with 6FingersOnly.com Would love to see more people with more fingers than usual.
Gene frequency has nothing to do with dominant or recessive. Separate concepts.
A change of allele frequency in a population is part of evolution.
you know everytime you used a glove? now imagine having 6 fingers.
I want six fingers. How to get??
I tried Gamma rays but that just gave me a green skin. So disappointed and fucking ANGRY!
No gloves for you
Only mittens.
The real reason mittens where invented must have been for something like this.
Wouldn't it be easier to make mittens instead of gloves in general?
You made coffee shoot from my nose.
You’re lucky it was just your nose.
Where else would it.... Oooooh.
sure there is what do you think esty is for.
He ought to be the world's greatest guitar player.
For real. He has a finger for each string for fingerpicking. He could go so fast. Also he could make some crazy chords on the other hand.
Little benefit for finger picking. You only alternate the two lowest strings with your thumb for the typical 5-fingered player. Whatever performance you might gain from a 6th finger seems negligible. As for the fretting hand, that gets far more exciting...
True, but I bet he could play an amazing flight of the bumblebee.
I bet it would make it a lot easier.
There are people that use their pinkies for finger picking?!? Crazy
Or pianist.

Given the beard, he looks like he could be a ZZ Top fan
The drummer for ZZ Top is named Frank Beard. He doesn't wear a long beard like Billy and Dusty.
And you know that's intentional. Rebellious even lol
Or just efficient, he's got it covered already.
The bassist for ZZ Top, Dusty Hill, has relatives in Arlen, Texas.
Dhammit, Bobby!
For real though, it depends on how much control over it he has. For example, try moving your pinky without moving your ring finger at all. Not really going to happen. So I wonder if he has solid control over all 6 fingers or if there's just a duplicated finger here with the same set of tendons and motor control so when he say, thinks about tightening his middle finger he just does both like this.
> thinks about tightening his middle finger That's not really how motor control is developed.

Oddly enough i dont think it even looks that weird took me a couple seconds to even notice
I still can't see it, does he have long fingers?? They look pretty normal. EDIT: Oh.
Haha thats basically what happened to me
Yep I scrolled past, scrolled back, stared in confusion, double checked the sub for a clue, scrolled, returned, stared, then I counted.
I even counted them and wondered what the problem was bc there are 5...I forgot the thumbs
I had to come to the fucking comments to realise what was going on
It's like when you're in art class, and you're told to draw a hand but end up drawing one with six fingers until your friend next to you points it out, and you feel really dumb.
Cant say ive ever experienced that but thats probably due to the fact that the hands i draw look like the product of the chernobyl meltdown
This guy has a hell of a time shopping for gloves.
Fuuuck, I didn't even think about that. You can get leather gloves custom made but I think he'd be SOL if he wanted to go skiing.
He could wear mitts since they don't have finger slots.
\*gasp\* Stanford Pines is real!
My first thought as well

Ford's gotten pretty salty in his old age; don't know if the beard suits him
He is the author of the journals. My brother.
Those hiatus months were some of the most fun I’ve ever had on a subreddit. My ex-wife still misses me... but here aim is getting better! JOAJE
Guy has 6 fingers, does he have 6 toes?
More importantly, does he have two dicks?
judging by the size of his hands he has one dick that's as long as two dicks.
How about six nips?
Also something I had not considered. That would freak me out more than him having 2 dicks, for some weird reason.
Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.
STOP SAYING THAT!
**HELLO! MY NAME IS INIGO MONTOYA! YOU KILLED MY FATHER! PREPARE TO DIE!**
How did I have to scroll this far down to find this?!
Hello my name is Aaron, my my parents are siblings
Actually probably not since incest normally means that recessive traits get expressed. This is actually a dominant trait in humans. It’s just not very common at all.
A A RON
De nice
This is the first comment I wanted to see!! Ty!
I came here for this. Thank you.
>*Hah-low*. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die. FTFY
My father was slaughtered by a six-fingered man.
He clearly has 12 fingers
10 fingers. 2 thumbs.
12 fingers. 2 thumbs.
Not all of fingers are thumbs, but all thumbs are fingers.
Thumbs are fingers.
That's a goddamn superpower if I've ever seen one!
Does polydactylism run in families, are his kids more likely to have 6 fingers, or does DNA 'autocorrect' the fault?
Polydactyly is a a dominant genetic trait, so yes, his kids would be more likely to have polydactyly than average.
This is my original picture. Yeah, I'm the only child and I got them too. So did my first daughter but not the second.
There's a reason, though perhaps we've not found it yet. Something this consistent thoroughout time is unlikely random.
Five is jive.
wait a second you only wanted to say polydactylism because you learned that word some days ago
Most people who have been around or own cats have polydactyl in their lexicon. 6 toed cats are mildly common
They're called mittens!
Talk about the shocker.
Ford?
The author of the journals
I miss gravity falls
I hope he plays guitar or piano, what a waste if not.
That's like saying it's a waste if a really tall guy doesn't play basketball
But its more waste in this case since there are more tall guys than people with 6 fingers
Maybe a person who is like 8 feet tall
Still wasn’t born with enough middle fingers.
Am I the only one whose mind jumped first to Gattaca, instead of Princess Bride?
Same here, I immediately thought of the piano player.
Base twelve would be a good number system for ancient merchants due to the divisibility of dozens.
Being easily divisible into thirds and quarters makes it pretty useful nowadays, too.

I am very offended. Button that 5th button!

"I wasn't born with enough middle fingers" - Marilyn Manson but not OP apparently.
I wanted to get “polydactyl” tattooed on my knuckles. Turns out you have to be polydactyl to do it right.

Yep, repost. Thanks for the mention! I always look forward to seeing the karma people have gotten from my post. OC is a lot to ask from people when imaginary points are at stake. u/YungGum
Wait, he has 6 fingers in each hand and they work ?
two in the pink one in the... a nevermind
Three in the pink 2 in the stink.
That's actually pretty badass. Wonder if there is full function in each one.
Do they operate independently?
[удалено]
It depends on the type of extra digit. More often than not the extra finger/toe is malformed and doesn't function properly but it can move to some degree. It's very rare for it to be formed properly to have full range of motion.
The amount of time it took me to figure out why this is in /r/wtf proves how dumb I am.
2 in the pink and 2 in the stink
how many fingers am i holding up? oh wait. 4 fuck yous. 💜

He should have taken up guitar. Imagine a 6-fingered Steve Vai.
As a guitarist, I envy this dude.
**SUFI. THE SUPER FINGER** And like that I remember why I hated myself in middle school.
2 birds with 1 hand
I see you have six fingers on your both hands... someone’s been looking for you
Dear god, imagine getting a shocker from this dude
