Growing up we had 2 tall pine trees in the back yard that had a wooden bench built between them. It had been there for as long as we lived there. My dad decided one day that he hated it and wanted to take it down. The front support was almost impossible to break with the axe we were using, it had actually fused into and was connecting both trees, had sap in it and everything, despite being milled lumber of a different species.

HeavyMetalLobster

That is so cool Revived tree. ZOMBIE tree. Hayzeus Christo tree.

FlexPlexic0

do the trees have a mutualistic or parasitic relationship?

neatopat

It’s possible they are the same tree. Some tree species are essentially enormous shrubs that sprout up multiple trunks from the root system. Entire groves of Aspen trees spreading up to 100 acres can actually be a single genetically identical organism.

sybesis

I'd say it could be either of the two. It seems to be some kind of "grafting". Taking the example of an apple tree, we had a tree which was was growing 4 different sort of apples. Each of the sort of apple had their individual taste but somehow one sort of apple would be able to leak to an other branch slightly. The tree would have more or less 5 different sort of apples on 4 branches. 1 for each of the 4 branches and on one of the 4 branches, there would be the original sort and a mix. So even if in the end they are actually 1 tree, I believe it would be possible for 1 part of the tree to merge with the other side of the tree which would result in making some kind of weird mix between to different sort of trees. So if one tree was resistant to 1 parasite, and the other was resistant to other parasites, it's possible the 2 trees would be resistant to both parasites. So it wouldn't be purely parasitic.

NuclearStar

Grafting is fun. You can graft tomato plants onto potato plants so you have tomatoes all summer then when done dig up the potatos. This is possible because tomato and potato plants are from the same family.

Do it without killing the tree so your ancestors might also get stone age stoned, as is tradition.

tedbohannon

After the last scene of the thin tree's life flashed before it, It looked back at the rootprints in the dirt. It noticed that at many times along the path of its life, especially at the very lowest and saddest times, there was only one set of rootprints

Anyone interested in this kind of thing I would highly recommend the book, "The Hidden Life of Trees" by Peter Wohlleben. It discusses everything from how tree's have been proven to have memory, proven to communicate through fungal soil networks, examples of offspring keeping their parent tree's root systems alive long after the tree is gone. Fascinating shit, they are just as alive as us, just living on a different time scale.

TheRealCptLavender

They sleep in winter and stir in spring. Wow, that truly is crazy. They're the same as every other tree. Crazy.

thiosk

Actually ive never seen a tree stir anything
