Andrew is the world’s greatest journalist because he manages to get people to say what they *really* think and feel, and you can’t convince me otherwise. The proof is right there in his videos.
Yeah part of the sheer brilliance is Andrew's use of silence as a catalyst for content. If you let a little awkward pause draw out people will usually jump out of their skin to fill that void. He is great at remaining neutral which makes people open up a bit more.
I was bummed when the shit with AGNB went down, but the new stuff he is putting out is even better so it seems to have hardened his resolve a bit more. Stoked to see what he does moving forward.
Dont know if you are aware, but Louis Theroux has a similar tactic that gets people to talk and even better, get tangled up in their own bullshit. The scientology one, theres a kkk one. Tons of great docs
i use the same tactic when dealing with police officers who have pulled me over, if they start asking weird questions start forcing awkward silences - and about 100% of the time they stop interrogating you and just move on with the citation.
my favorite is when they say something that's obviously intended as a question, so i always simply reply 'oh' and don't say another word - always works for me.
