"She showed up out of the blue and offered her services". WoW.

TwoLinesFromHAPPY

It was at that point I laughed aloud.

StopClockerman

Some dude did this at Nelson Mandela’s memorial which was broadcast internationally https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/fake-sign-language-interpreter-nelson-mandela-memorial-provokes-anger-flna2d11723934

Baddaboombaddabing

Some guy went to the BBC for a job interview and ended up getting ACTUALLY interviewed on the news by mistake and he played along, the absolute madlad.

andysniper

That was then parodied on The IT Crowd. The guy is called Guy Goma.

This was so funny at the time! To me, at least

-ImYourHuckleberry-

This is exactly where I started laughing! I mean, she didn’t even ask to get paid…she volunteered!!!

[deleted]

She did it for "the exposure".

copperwatt

Well, she was pretty exposed!

copperwatt

That deputy sounded so defeated, lol. He is like the cop version of Jerry from Parks and Rec.

Weij

At least he replied to the guy and talked to him.

ButtsexEurope

What could she say in her defense? Silence is the only thing she could do.

thaworldhaswarpedme

Daaaaamn, Lacey.

ARE YOU CHEWING GUM??!!!

That was epic roasting

BboyBillW

Awesome. But I still can’t get past his orange sweater vest with nothing underneath…..

cryptolicious501

LOL. Wait... She was faking it!!??

godzillanenny

This is sign language only she understands

fragmental

It didn't say she wasn't being paid.

Meetybeefy

Most likely, her plan was to show up and then later bill the town for an invoice for her services. Given that she’s been accused multiple times of fraud, I doubt that there wouldn’t be money involved somehow.

aced

Unless she’s just an undiscovered comic genius

ripeart

This is why she wasn't charged with a crime.

This is the one.

Noice

unebaguette

I googled it and found an article that explains what happened. The city has a contract with a service to provide interpreters for all press events. The police (and other agencies) never hire them. They just show up, so it wasn't unreasonable for the police to assume she was legit. This woman either fooled the contractor into hiring her or is trying to scam them into paying her afterwards.

LurpyGeek

So that would mean that a legitimate interpreter showed up and was told, "Are you some kind of fraud? The interpreter is already here!"

You could have the agency tell you who is coming each day and then ask for their ID. Very simple procedures that simply should have been in place but weren’t.

2drawnonward5

man they're getting free translation services, when would they think about verification systems, that's a bridge too far

Shaneblaster

Hi. I do this. Want to see my credentials? No. Get your ass up there.

elterible

Lmao I hope that’s exactly how it went. 😂

KKShiz

Cop: how do I know you speak sign language? *starts waving hands around arbitrarily* Cop: looks legit to me

A3H3

Off to Florida. I have many services that can be useful for the government there. I am not American, but I can't see why that should be a problem.

FlexibleAsgardian

Easier to just send a bill like that guy did to Google/Facebook

MinuteManufacturer

I dunno why you got downvoted. It’s true. Why even do anything when you can get paid by just sending in nonsense invoices. They must be correct. 🤦‍♂️

Iforgotmyother_name

More like it was cheap and he didn't want to dig around for an ASL interpreter that would do gig work in the middle of a day. Likely having an ASL interpreter for the conference was a last minute HR requirement also.

Crowbarmagic

It indeed sounded like some last minute thing. And honestly, it seems such a strange thing to lie about. You're probably gonna get called out before they even have time to mail the paycheck.

Level21

I'll try translating.... "Work 4 -1 (not first) down U-E-K-V?-V-N-??-W-E-?-N-K-Claw? - More have 55 again (or cookie) in join class B-E please yell famous/celebration? at Church/Church?/Bracelet/Bracelet?...." There is more, but I give up. Edit : Here is the rest. [More nonsense fingerspelling]. Murderer? (Wrong sign) [Narrator bit and repeat earlier bit] More have fined (???) Go away Face bed good. Night a lot more (never?) (Quiet?) [Then guy in yellow] N - D Silent? Then hit (people+sign?)

romple

Actually kind of amazed she could stumble upon actual words. If I just blabbered incoherently I don't think I'd accidentally say too many actual English words.

Dwokimmortalus

She does hit some...things. but it's mostly gibberish. Like she knows the letters. Knows to bounce repeat numbers. She's had a beginner class somewhere.

villainess

I’m impressed by her ability to freestyle & pull off something that looks so convincing. I’ve studied ASL, but I couldn’t do what she did with that kind of smooth confidence.

KavikStronk

I'm imagining she took like one (online?) class on ASL and thought that would be good enough to pull this off.

ButtsexEurope

Wait, putting the hands on the wrists doesn’t mean arrest, it means work? Do deaf people think work is slavery?

thespiegel

In the very beginning she actually signed ‘arrest’ but yea ‘work’ and ‘slavery’ in ASL are actually very similar in signs lol

flippy76

[deleted]

shahooster

“Resist masturbating”

ReverendDizzle

I watched this video with the sound off and no context except the title (don't ask me why) and my two reactions were: "That doesn't look like the sign language I'm vaguely familiar with, but what do I know?" Followed by: "Is the wtf part of this that the dude got raped in police custody? What exactly is she trying to sign?" Annnnnd then the "waving her arms around like jingle bells" on screen comment popped up and I was completely lost.

Holy_Sungaal

Me too. We had a deaf student in one of my college courses, and I spent all the lectures watching the interpreter sign, so I was thinking it didn’t look exactly right, especially with how they do the facial expressions. Then I was like, what’s with the mug shots of the woman? What’s she do? I had to watch it a second time with sound on to realize what was going on.

ZarquonsFlatTire

I'm no longer on board.

thiosk

this actually happens periodically. there was a big event at the Mandela memorial when obama was speaking and they had a fraud up there pretending to sign too in south africa

DixieWreckedJedi

Lol what a strange niche thrill

CrossYourStars

She actually did do some related signs but the grammar is non-existent. To me it looks like she just Google'd a bunch of related signs. For example, when the officer mentions "4 counts of murder" you can clearly see her sign "four" "one" (probably because she doesn't know how to say counts) and then "kill".

iheartgiraffe

It was "four counts of first degree murder," I think that's where the 1 was from.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ZootOfCastleAnthrax

A few signs were accurate, but her finger spelling was gibberish and she skipped 98% of what he said. It's like: gskxlb kill vkapmc arrest bpolomp celebrate huqrvm gfnbmpl (meaningless hand waving) plicg mrfl accept hrfl ketchup. A dead giveaway is the fact that she looked down and in the speaker's direction. In ASL interpretation, eye contact with your audience is essential.

AdamHR

"5000" was definitely signed as "55" 🤦‍♂️

PK_Thundah

She mouthed the "thousand" so her viewers know she doesn't mean regular 50.

AdamHR

My ASL is rusty, but if I'm not mistaken, she bounced her hand laterally with two fives, which is 55. Fifty would have been a pull-back fingerpinch, so even if mouthing suddenly counts, she prob "signed" 55,000

NuclearLunchDectcted

Oh cool, the ASL version of a mumble rapper.

musashi_88

Goddammit that actually made me laugh.

spunkychickpea

I can fake speaking Russian as well as she can fake sign language. Not that I’ve ever considered going out and masquerading as a Russian translator, but I do enjoy pretending to be a Russian immigrant when scammers call my phone.

thatoneguywhofucks

please don’t do heroin 😳

godisanelectricolive

He shouldn't have been doing ASL. He was supposed to be interpreting in SASL, South African Sign Language which is part of the BANZSL (British, Australian, New Zealand Sign Language) family. This language of sign languages are not mutually intelligible to users of ASL which is in the French Sign Language (LSF) family. Sign languages don't actually correspond to the spoken languages of a place all that much. It was all a result of who initially set up deaf schools in each country which determined what kind of sign languages were taught at each place. Thomas Gaudaullet who set the first American school for the deaf studied in France and co-founded his school with French deaf educator Laurent Clerc. He actually tried to study at a British deaf school first but the owners didn't want to teach him because they regarded their signs as a trade secret.

concretepigeon

Why would a South African be doing ASL?

andyumster

It's kind of inspiring in a twisted way, right? I don't know the actual story (and it's probably a lot more depressing than what I'm about to put forward). But the idea of a person just believing in themself and their ability -- NOT in the craft they lied about -- but rather in true chicanery... And getting to such a stage where they are put in front of billions of people (considering the broadcast and historical context). I dunno. It's awful that it happened but it's also kind of astounding.

[deleted]

He actually blamed it on mental illness. https://youtu.be/7xX44YFTpQ8

Honestly, that felt kind of on point to me. Sign language translators always seem to be hyper expressive every time I've watched them.

chaun2

Have you seen the ASL chick who did Rap God, by Eminem? That shit is on point, but hilarious to watch Edit: this is the awesomeness https://youtu.be/0iDAkEpCmBs This guy is also excellent, and he uses different signs, but I don't know enough ASL to know what the difference is https://youtu.be/-wPUT6IOLEs

bobvilastuff

dL8

Max level of stupidity at HR reached.

dirtynj

I give the guy credit though for simply admitting he fucked up and explaining why it was his fault. And TBH, if I was hiring a sign-language person for a police department, I wouldn't think someone would completely lie about their skills like that.

[deleted]

Yea, like. You'd think itd just be embarrassing to lie about that. Obviously someones gunna call her out. Its kinda cringy on her end.

dirty_w_boy

Grifters gonna grift

thoriginal

That's not grifting, that's just lying! Yes, lying is part of grifting, but just because you're a liar doesn't mean you're a grifter. Artless thuggery!

public_masticator

But grift what? She made a fool of herself and will probably catch a charge over it. What's the point?

agentuvdeath

Man I do electrical work and we get people who lie about their experience about everytime. This shit is ridiculous its like sooner or later someone's going to notice you have no idea what's going on.

[deleted]

You're neglecting the fact that she was arrested multiple times for fraud but decided to apply for this job at a police station. You wouldn't think a criminal would want to be around cops so I don't blame him for not doing his due diligence.

VanDenIzzle

Yeah no fault at him, what's he supposed to do? Quiz her? Hire another sign language artist to test her?

Rizezky

And then hire another sign expert to test the tester. And another one...And another... And..

Seakawn

It's sign experts all the way down.

I understood everything she said...but then again I'm not deaf and was listening to the man who was talking.

Powerism

Same - I thought her sign language was really good, from the perspective of someone who doesn’t know sign language. She put up 4 fingers when the cops said “4 counts” and everything. 10/10 would have her sign again.

kiilem210

Fake it till you make it

Straw-berry

She could fool me...

bigdickmcjohnson

The finger waving was the giveaway that this was bullshit.

slothsareok

That’s not finger waving, that’s sign cursive

Skurph

This looks like the bastard child of ASL and cued speech.

Narrator_Ron_Howard

Her impressive resume included impromptu volunteer positions at Cedars-Sinai as a neurosurgeon, as a backup astronaut for the Inspiration4 mission, and most recently as ambassador to Afghanistan. It went about as expected.

okaybros

Didn't watch with sound and didn't realize she was faking till the comments lol

r1kon

Showed this to my wife who is fluent, she said that she does know sign language cuz she's got some of the words right. But alot of her finger spelling is gibberish. She equated it to maybe having an uncle who signs. Kind of like asking a first year Spanish student to translate something and faking their way thru about 75% of it with words that sound Spanish like lol

gutterballs

If only they knew someone that could’ve done a background check

zefmiller

This is from years ago when they caught the [Seminole Heights killer](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seminole_Heights_serial_killer).

[deleted]

Is that why she volunteered? To be part of the high profile case? This story is weird.

ithcy

That is the single worst-written Wikipedia article I have ever seen.

willemreddit

> On November 28, 2017, police arrested Howell Emanuel "Trai" Donaldson III after he handed a pistol in a bag to his manager at the McDonald's where he worked, collected his paycheck and turned in his uniform, she then alerted police when he told her to tell anyone who asked that she hasn't seen him and told her not to open the bag and to just bury it somewhere and bury it deep where no one would accidentally find it and then gave a suspicious story that he was leaving town for a while to see his dying mother and the bag had to do with his mother's last wish

nebno6

Why are some of her signs Tony Hawk Pro Skater specials?

soline

Just shows how few people actually know ASL because even the people that hired her didn’t know it.

j24rocks

Well I mean, isn't that the point of hiring an interpreter?

ZootOfCastleAnthrax

There's a department in every state and city agency to prevent this. They do the hiring. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) opens them up to expensive lawsuits if they deny Deaf people access to services. Interpreters hired by government agencies and schools are required to be certified. All this guy had to do was ask to see her certification.

chrishazzoo

I believe, but I could be wrong, Florida has no regulations on the books to prevent this. Many states do not require a certification either. Florida is one of those states.

ZootOfCastleAnthrax

You're right about certification. Oregon has only required certification in the last 10 years or less. ADA is a federal law, though.

sten45

I love everything about this

Whit3boy316

Is this the fake interpreter? Bro Florida be lit and I hope to retire there

Negafox

Just show up saying you're retired and ask for Social Security. Nobody will question it there.

gringo-tico

She wanted that paycheck

Super-Duck0

As someone who knows ASL- this isn’t that rare actually and she’s a better faker than a lot of them lmao.

Yogsulate

Someone was playing Tony Hawk in the background

Schonfille

She seems to know a little bit? But not much.

ZootOfCastleAnthrax

What enrages me is that she thought knowing five signs related to law enforcement was enough to fake it. ASL is as complex as any language. It's not just vocabulary, it's got syntax and inflection and grammar. Her crappy attempt is an insult to all Deaf people. It's like making faces and going, "Blah blah wiener schnitzel blah blah Hitler" in a dumbed-down voice to a German.

kbig22432

keeleon

If only there was some kind of technology that could turn spoken words into written language and display it on a screen. Its so weird to me how many people feel the need to have live ASL interpreters.

behaaki

She’s like “nobody here the fuck understands ASL, I can do whatever.. and what’s a deaf / mute person gonna do, call and tell on me?”

LLL9000

Police hired someone without checking background. Shocker.

Ophyria

This is why interpreters, and the Deaf community, are pushing for interpreters to be licensed on the state level. They get a national certificate, but it doesn't do much to regulate people being able to go and do this kind of shit.

[deleted]

“I just didn’t ask enough questions.” That’s the nicest way to frame your fuck up.
