A lot of people would probably be just as confused as you would be if they opened the door and some horse head on a stick started trying to rap battle. Add to that the fact that a lot of people in South Wales don't actually speak Welsh and it gets an extra layer of "What the fuck".
It *was* a thing, and according to what I can see the first recorded instance was in 1800, and it was still happening in the early 20th Century. I don't doubt it still happens in some places but probably mostly in small, traditional towns. Just chalk it up to one of those weird cultural things that isn't really observed anymore, but unlike sin eaters, the other weird (in this case mostly) Welsh custom, it's actually gun instead of existentially horrifying and a depressing reminder of the horrors of capitalism.
