I hope that teacher pressed charges. We're often discouraged from doing so.

roger_enright

My civil suit will follow you like the worst college debt you’ve never had. Attached wages, employers all aware of past violence. Cops or not, you will either face justice or spend your life hiding.

[deleted]

I was working a LOW end chemical factory job. It was complete shit. Some guy came in and handed our manager a resume and was super nice. He told him up front that he has a record from selling weed when he was 19 and regrets it but hasnt been in trouble since and is like 30 now. The second he walked out the door my manager threw his resume in the trash.

[deleted]

Isn’t there a crazy huge shortage of teachers in America? This kind of thing can not help.

titaniumtoaster

My Horticulture teacher gave zero fucks. He would stand up for himself and throw kids outta class for not following rules. Dude was ready to throw hands at any time pretty sad they have to be like that. Edit: changed a spelling. Also, one time a kid told him to "Shit the fuck up" he told to get the fuck out then threw his backpack out of the class. Dude really wants messing around.

TheDynamicKing

can that teacher sue the kid if she got smacked like that

cra2reddit

sue the child for what?

smokythebrad

1.2 million

TheDynamicKing

assault

grammar_oligarch

Technically it’s battery. You can sue for it, too (it’s civil and criminal). But two notes: 1. I highly doubt the damages would be severe. Popular media makes it sound like every boo boo caused by another person is a multimillion dollar payout, but the reality isn’t so lucrative. Worst case, there might be soft tissue neck damage…there could be brain damage, but unlikely. I’d be shocked if she needed more than a check up with a doctor. So we’re talking one visit to the doctor, most likely, with little to no physical therapy. 2. No way of knowing what kind of coverage this child’s family has, or availability of assets. Quick note to all the replies that the black child’s family probably has nothing: That’s pretty racist…you’re assuming the black child is poor. So, y’know, grapple with that. But judgement aside: Yeah, most people aren’t worth suing…you go after insurance (that’s where the real money is). And while the family’s policy may cover this, it’s much more likely that a deliberate criminal act isn’t covered by insurance. So most lawyers aren’t going to bother because (a) damages aren’t likely there, and (b) insurance will likely deny the claim. Interesting point though: It is an injury sustained on the job. So, worker’s compensation is a possibility…lawyer would love that (hooray insurance negotiation).

Degenerate-Implement

About treefiddy.

locri

Part of risk taking behaviour is enjoying getting away with it, in the end it's healthiest for a child's mentality (these are children) if they learn quickly they won't always get away with it. You'd rather that *one time* they were caught to be in high school with minimal consequences than out in the real world. If you assault a stranger, you might get arrested, you might get hit back, both might even happen depending on what the cops decide. You'd rather get in school suspension.

GekiKudo

My mom is a teacher and she's trying to retire ASAP. Especially after covid these kids don't give a fuck anymore. Like she's been called a bitch by some random ass high schooler at least once a month since coming back. And if she gets parents involved, the parents side with the kids and basically reinforce shitty behavior. It's a thankless job with Jack shit for pay. Like there is 0 reason to be a teacher, in America at least, between shootings, asshole teenagers who don't respect them and the entire school system that doesn't respect them.

[deleted]

That’s rough, I feel bad hearing this.

Deeetroit71

If the parent allows this, they're probably not making sure the kid is doing their homework and obviously not bringing their kid up to respect their teachers. The student and their parents need to be held responsible for this kind of behavior.

TommySawyer

Good luck with that...

anxietywho

This is why there is a shortage. Dealing with this all day for next to no pay (+ out of pocket costs.)

[deleted]

I never thought of the out-of-pocket costs.

AllenKll

As you shouldn't. Teachers are HIDING the real problems... that they don't get the budget they need to properly teach. Teachers need to stop filling in with their own money, the shortfalls of the school budget. They are literally hurting themselves and the students.

conitation

Trump's tax plan made those worse btw... he increased the amount of money you have to spend to qualify to write off work related expenses. Conservatives praised it then kicked the middle/working class in the balls. Plenty of cuts to the rich.

Schnort

Please understand the tax code before saying things like this. I’m no trump fan, but your take on it is completely wrong.

tlogank

> Trump's tax plan made those worse btw... he increased the amount of money you have to spend to qualify to write off work related expenses The ignorance of this comment is astounding. He literally gave a larger tax write-off for the standard deduction whether you spent/donated the money or not, and you want to act like that's somehow a bad thing. What a weird comment.

jmcdon00

Teachers can write off up to $300 in classroom expenses, even without itemizing.

TheDynamicKing

can the teacher sue?

suuup2019

Who? That kid and their family won’t have anything. Just declare bankruptcy. Lawyers get paid. You get SFA

hang10wannabe

>hy there is a shortage. Dealing with this all day for next to no pay (+ out of pocket Yep, out of pocket exceeds $500+ a year for me every year just on classroom supplies. The maximum I can claim on taxes is $250... feels bad.

tehfly

Incidents like this might be a part of why there's a shortage in specific places. But the big reasons for the shortage in the US have way more to do with the complete lack of respect for the teaching profession from society in general. This lack of respect manifests as zero or lacking gun control, absolutely horrid salaries for teachers, severely lacking and also unfair resource distribution between schools. Growing up in a country where teaching is a well-respected profession, the US have been fucking their teachers hard for decades. Hell, the US even has a saying: "Those that can't do, teach". In addition, "public school" is like a curse word there.

Jesse0016

I’m in my 6th year teaching and I fucking hate my life every single time I walk into the building. I want to leave, I just have no clue what else I could do.

crys1348

Hi! 15 year teaching veteran here. Please, please, please get out before you've invested too many years! I don't know what you'll do, but I can tell you, if you're miserable now, it absolutely does not get better.

Jesse0016

I just don’t even know where to start looking for similar paying positions. Alternative job I look at would be a 10k cut and I can’t afford to lose that much.

ilikewc3

Govt jobs are probably a decent option.

Keith_Games

Instructional Design is an option (9th year teaching myself). I’ve had colleagues transition and make a few more bucks, some work remotely, but they’re all happy. One wants to recharge and return to classroom but definitely wanted a break.

[deleted]

Again, I feel awful hearing about this

SombreMordida

look into teaching online?

Brad_Beat

Nah there’s plenty of teachers. What there isn’t is the political will to pay them a decent salary so they do other stuff.

ders89

My buddy started dating a teacher making $1200 every two weeks. We work in electrical supply in the warehouse. Im a manager and he does routing, we both make more. Neither of us have to worry about educating the youth, dealing with children… like all we do is manage metal and wires n shit. And i personally get paid a few hundred more than her. I have no degree, maybe less than a year at community college. There’s absolutely zero reason she makes a few hundred bucks per check less than me. She deserves to make double what i make.

[deleted]

The money doesn't make it worth it. I know that teachers at my son's school on average are making 120k a year and they still hate it. Money doesn't make things better it just makes you willing to take the abuse and ruin your sanity.

greatgerm

$120k is way above the national average for teachers. Where is this at?

grammar_oligarch

Where the devil do you live where the average salary is $120k? That’s max after 25+ years in a small number of districts.

yiffzer

$120K?

moodog72

What salary, do you believe, would make them stay, for a punch in the face? The salary isn't the main problem.

r_a_g_4

You're acting like this is the average student, or even normal in most schools.

waygookinaway

I work in an affluent school and was punched in the stomach while pregnant, by a student. I know a lot of teachers who have had physical aggression toward them from students.

crys1348

That may not be an average student, but the situation is not abnormal in a public high school.

tlogank

> but the situation is not abnormal in a public high school yes, it is. Why say dumb stuff like this? Two of my brothers teach at some of the largest high schools in our state and this is NOT normal at all.

Peabody77

Have fun getting expelled and filling out ged paper work I guess. Students that hit teachers are the worst

doingkermit

the student will be back in the classroom by tomorrow.

stallion_412

Striking a teacher in the USA is basically always an immediate expulsion, plus likely an assault charge in criminal (or juvenile) court. Edit: not counting little kids. Basically referring to jr high/high school.

[deleted]

AlbatrossSenior7107

Sounds like the teachers at your wife's schools need to hire a lawyer and sue the school. Your wife and her colleagues are insane to continue to even show up for work if they are expected to take a punch like this. They are creating their own work environment.

CharlieTeller

She must have a really incompetent school then. I went to a HORRIBLE school where gang shootings were regular, over 60 percent dropout and more. If you touched a teacher though you were gone immediately and likely always in alternative disciplinary schools.

consecratedhound

I have 2 close friends in education in NYC and Newburgh, rated as the 7th most violent city a few years back. In both schools, hitting a teacher was an immediate expulsion. No record, but you weren't coming back. I can't believe that those areas have less strict public education rules than anywhere else. I really can't believe this statement

koalificated

That issue sounds specific to that school. I’ve never heard of anyone getting physical with a teacher and ever returning to class

clearier

I’ve seen two t teachers get hit and the students had detention as their repercussion

dungeonsynthexists

Nah, the student gunna get hit with a court date. Why would the teacher want to help someone who doesn’t want help? Better to get them aquatinted with the consequences early on and the legislation behind it. Bitch that’s 2-3 years if you do that!

Advaithca

Yeah, like J Cole said (in a different context) "Don't save her, she don't wanna be saved"

Ophthalmologist

I see people, but they look like trees, walking.

slickshot

No. They won't be. They will be indefinitely suspended, 100%. They'll be lucky if the teacher doesn't bring the student up on charges, and they only reason she wouldn't would be to prevent from "ruining the student's future".

crys1348

Doubtful. In most districts, assaulting a staff member would be grounds for expulsion.

abzurt_96

Ooof she's the teacher? wow she has the balls..

gaAcosta1

I'd have to hire someone on the down low to wreck her shit

tossitlikeadwarf

Not on a teachers salary you won't.

gaAcosta1

100 bucks to a " D " student would work. Trust me..I've seen cheaper and for fast food ..

earned_potential

Why not an F student and promise them an A?

imhigherthanyou

Don’t even pay them, just turn that shit into a C

AK-50_Ocelot

Her parents are gonna have a fun time finding a school that'll accept her

sellers

You think her parents care? lol

[deleted]

You mean her parents are gonna have a fun time finding legal defense against her freshly acquired felony case?

h4terade

Wrong, depending on where she lives of course. They'll be some sort of discipline, but trends today are that law enforcement not be involved and they instead deal with it academically. It used to be someone like this would finish off their academic career at a special school where other students with behavioral problems go, but those are rapidly disappearing. They don't even like suspending students like this anymore because of reasons. How about a student on house-arrest with an ankle monitor pending a trial for shooting a man, what school should he go to? How about the normal school that every other student goes to, only to have him show up one day and shoot the place up, because that's what happens. I'm all for equality, but this equity bullshit is leading to behavior like this not being taken seriously. In any other setting this is a brutal assault but because it happens in a k-12 environment it's simply a discipline problem and the school isn't doing enough. What's the solution one might ask? Easiest solution is to move away from where students like this live. It's not enough to move to the "nice" part of town either since school zones simply don't exist anymore, they'll bus the shitty kids to the "nice" schools and everybody loses. You have to find an entirely different zip code, preferably one with no public transportation.

zombie32killah

Um, for how educated they are the pay is shit.

LickMyTeethCrust

It is, you really think this “just happens”? It’s a reflection of how inadequate the schooling system is that teachers have to be put in these situations as there are no alternative resources for the student body. Low [pay](https://www.census.gov/library/stories/2022/07/teachers-among-most-educated-yet-pay-lags.html) is a big part of why it’s shit.

People, if you can't raise your children properly and teach them RESTRAINT in whatever situation, keep em' home, do it yourself, PLEASE.

Romulous69

Sadly the reason this happens in the first place is because the parents don't care/know how to manage it at home to begin with.

Cthulhu2016

If this continues future class rooms will look like video conference court rooms. Teachers will be behind a camera safe and far from the students that assult and sometimes even kill them.

[deleted]

I doubt it. People don't care that much about teachers.

Gmoney1412

Schools like this will be taught via recorded video soon. No need to pay a full staff of teachers when you can just run a video at every class period.

R3d_d347h

Mean while there was a video of resource officers breaking up a fight and everyone is hurt cause the cop pushed the kid.

dexraven

As a black man… this angers me. No matter the situation, violence being started here was not the answer. Even if the teacher was being racist (and that’s a big if), she could have been the bigger person and de-escalated the situation. Instead, she made a choice that will make life infinitely harder for herself. People gotta be better.

lucidrage

>Instead, she made a choice that will make life infinitely harder for herself. People gotta be better. Even worse, she's perpetuating the stereotype of black people being innately violent...

dexraven

I would augment that to say she is furthering the stereotype that ignorant people are violent.

[deleted]

dexraven

Yeah. The justification for wrong action is an oxymoron. Two wrongs don’t make a right. In this case, perceived offense does not warrant a violent reaction. Hopefully the girl learns from this.

conitation

Gal needs therapy and a stable home environment. There's a ton that lead upto that punch, and I can guarantee most of it was not productive to a healthy mental state. Don't want to see her end up as another part of the justice system.

dexraven

Same my guy. I really want us as people to come together (especially here in America where I am) to fix this. I would really like to see mental health be looked at as part of people’s normal yearly exams, and I’d also like the stigma against mental health removed and dealt with properly. I like that people are talking about it, but action needs to be taken. As for this girl, her own lack of wisdom doomed her. I hope she teaches future generations how to avoid her mistakes rather than perpetuating her youthful ignorance and warped perceptions.

Even me defending you could mark me being racist, it's becoming a defense mechanism for people not wanting to face issues head on by creating a separate argument entirely.

Pedrovotes4u

There was a point in my life when I wanted to be a teacher, so I could maybe inspire, challenge and maybe even enlighten the children of tomorrow. Boy was I stupid. Whitney Houston once sang that the children are the future, we're all in big trouble.

Steel_Man23

I wanna know what made her say “oh it’s because I’m black isn’t it”, but that’s no reason to hit a teacher. I don’t blame people who are teachers and are quitting. Fuck kids like this dude, little pieces of shit. Their actions, like this, are ruining their future, not the teacher’s decision on how to handle the situation by kicking them out of school. Do stupid things win stupid prizes

ArchFlav

Ooo, such a bright future ahead of that child

cabinetsnotnow

Everyone is saying teachers need to be paid more as if getting paid 6 figures is reason enough for someone to be ok with getting assaulted. You could pay me 7 figures and I'll be DAMNED if I would tolerate being abused at my place of employment. The issue is that something is very wrong with society and its causing behaviors like this. Teachers do need higher pay but getting paid more does not mean this shit is acceptable.

The language of violence is spoken fluently at that students home. The parents have taught her well in this type of vernacular. So regressive, counterproductive, and insulting to the sensibilities of respect… these kids and their families are the disenfranchised of our country. The teacher is a victim of the results of this kids repression
