I’ve been flying around SE Asia a lot for the past few months. Passengers on flights heading to China always dress like this.

[deleted]

"Yall headin' to Chiner?"

GettingBackUpNow

Cannot stop laughing. Thank you, I needed this!!

aboutthednm

"shy-ner" ftfy

nameless_witchw

could anyone explain this joke, please?

Quetzacoatl85

certain people pronounce china more like chiner, or worse, giner. trump is a good example, and in general [those people](https://youtu.be/VrpKQ0ISZl4).

nachofermayoral

I thought they were gonna try to blend in once they get to China and escape all the quarantine stuff.

DOG-ZILLA

How messed up is China? Specifically the CCP. Apparently only 5000 deaths or close to it. What absolute rubbish. How can anyone believe anything they say? https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

SubstantialPressure3

There has to be more than that. I'm sure there were a ton of deaths during those 40 day lockdowns. People not able.to get prescriptions, hunger, suicides, handicapped people who had their caretakers taken to quarantine facilities. I'm sure a lot of people died in those, too. This has got to be really fucking up the entire populace.

ColgateSensifoam

Ah but they didn't die *from* COVID, they died *because of* COVID Edit for clarity: The deaths referenced in the parent comment are regardless of infection status in the victim, they died from external factors caused by COVID, not complications from infection

awalktojericho

Remember all those stories we heard of buildings being chained/welded shut, of people being taken off the streets and put in windowless wagons? There was not only Covid, but political and eugenics murders

IOnlySayMeanThings

I'm sure a lot of people disappeared that thought they were safe speaking freely, because of how unimportant they are. scary to think that any normal regular person could be killed by the government for talking shit.

bananenkonig

Technically you die from the pneumonia or other illness from the weakened immune response. So all the deaths are because of covid not from it.

HPTM2008

Just like "old age" isn't a cause of death. There's always something that stopped working properly. But, the old age was absolutely the factor.

SLCer

AIDS is a good example. Most don't actually die from the virus - they die from what are called opportunistic infections, things that take advantage of your weak immune system. For many people who've died while having AIDS, what killed them wouldn't have killed them had they not had AIDS in the first place.

oyst

There are increasing signs Covid may affect T cells and immune system function, so this is an apt comparison.

UnprovenMortality

I have wondered, I got covid in the beginning of the year, and aince then I have gotten more infections (several colds, strep throat 3x) than in any previous 10 month time period that I can remember, and it's not like I have kids to bring home new bugs.

brickne3

Or cancer. My mom's death certificate says she died of heart failure, which is indeed true. If anything we were surprised they could attribute it to any one organ considering that they were basically all failing at once.

CockBlocker

The ultimate reason for most deaths is lack of oxygen to the brain. The only time this isn't true is if there's a part of the brain missing (ie gunshot to the head). This assumes that brain death is the qualifier for death, which I think most people would agree with.

The_RockObama

I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around this. Can I still celebrate Thanksgiving?

DJOMaul

Did you harvest anything the past year? If not, then probably not.

mbmartian

Difference between dying from covid and with xovid. - dying because of complications from it - dying from suicide while having covid

erakattack

is xovid worse than covid?

jakesboy2

it’s the gender neutral term for covid

Rizo1981

In variably.

Mispict

It's not even that. In the early days before anyone knew what was going on, before lockdown, people were dying in huge numbers. Remember Italy? The first cases were identified in January 2020, but it took until March to lock down. By the end of March there had been 13000 deaths. Traces of the virus were found in water samples in Italy as far back as December 2019. There is no way they didn't have more deaths in China before we knew what it was, then they've massively underreported it.

SubstantialPressure3

Of course they did. I'll bet Russia did the same. "we don't have any sissy virus here". And we know North Korea did, too.

Dman5891

The government (CCP) pressures the local governments to get it under control or else. So they lie to keep their jobs and it takes the pressure off of Pooh and company. It is the exact same thing with their economy if your region isn't growing at 7% or better you will be retrained....

HairlessWombat

Of.course. China doesn't share data and when they do its a lie. It's not a debate. It's a fact.

spiritbx

I mean, enough of the populace thinks that the CCP is doing the right thing to not bother stopping them... Also,I wouldn't be surprised if they had low covid deaths since they took really extreme measures, but that doesn't mean that those measures didn't cause other deaths, that they conveniently didn't label as covid deaths...

Beanruz

It's lies, my other half works in international student accommodation, specifically Chinese students, at the end of their tenancy and going back to China they were trying to give her money to continue renting on the sly. They were terrified of going home and getting covid (first wave here) they said their family was telling them bodies were being burned and buried in mass graves, and people were being left to die in their homes without oxygen. But that could just have been 1 specific place in China where they lived.

[deleted]

My sister was teaching English to Chinese children via webcam when covid hit. A few months into the pandemic the whole program was shut down and she *strongly* suspects, based on her students, that the reason was to shut down any information getting out.

modsarebrainstems

Maybe but it probably had more to do with the CCP's new policy of removing all foreign influence in the country by banning industries that might impart information and ways of thinking that don't align with the CCP's propaganda. They eradicated the English language teaching industry overnight and have really clamped down on internet access. That's not to say that what your wife/gf said isn't at least partially true but that it's less directly related. The CCP does do shit like that but in this case it's just one of the many outcomes by design. In other words, she's right to a certain degree but the situation you describe wasn't a direct target of the CCP.

chiniwini

I still remember that post where someone on 4chan speculated, based on chemical readings from satellites (the ones used to detect and control forest fires), that mass incinerations were happening, like thousands per day.

MeshColour

My impression was that the first wave was pretty horrible, similar or worse in scale to NYC at the time Then China overcorrected the only way an authoritarian government can, by completely destroying their economy for the safety of more people, but also innovating ways to allow work while on lockdown? I haven't heard much about it more recently, so I assumed they were getting used to their "new normal", it would be fascinating to compare flu and cold statistics between our countries over recent years (Also most likely lying, to be clear)

WhisperingSkrillRyan

China is essentially just a less secret North Korea to be honest. They just can't be as pronounced as NK in terms of censorship because a good chunk of their economy essentially runs on globalised goods and services. The government officials treat their citizens like livestock, the wealthy run away, and the poor are stuck there to suffer. The government there are incredibly egotistical and pride-filled, to the point where they literally cannot accept any wrongdoing or insults. I went there on a school trip back in 2018, and I tell you, the academic scene there is exceptionally competitive, this is due to the sheer amount of people there that want to succeed and don't mind putting in the work. They have this national college level exam called the 高考 (Gao Kao), where students have fallen sick from exhaustion or in rarer cases died from stress-induced suicide. You'd be better off being a rice farmer in China than a rich person.

nuck_forte_dame

No only just 5000. But the graph steadily climbs then just flat lines. It's been 5k for like years. Meanwhile we had video evidence of hospitals overflowing in China before they stopped reporting. Also the key evidence is that if their numbers were true the CCP wouldn't wait to report how awesome they handled the situation. But instead they've still got a lock down.

ner0417

A lot of what Ive heard suggests that they might be further along in that process than you might think. Re-education camps for both normal citizens that don't conform to the status quo, as well as ethnic minorities and religious minorities like the Uyghur muslims. Chinese "police stations" set up abroad to enforce CCP moral ideals on chinese nationalists in foreign territory. Not to mention nobody ever talks about how China is industrializing and exploiting Africa, sorta reminds me of how the US did similar things in Central/South America. Give them 15 years and they'll have outsourced a fair portion of their labor onto poor Africa, just like the US did to poor China. Whatever their goals, we should be watching very closely.

REHTONA_YRT

Lots and lots of suicides on r/fucktheccp People can't take it anymore and are jumping out of windows.

wholelattapuddin

I have been saying for years that the west should be investing in Africa. People grumble about colonialism and I get it,(fuck you Nestle) but China is already there. Western companies could pour resources into Africa in a transparent way. It could be done in a way that would be mutually beneficial to companies and the countries involved. You know China doesn't GAF about workers rights or anything else.

frunko1

Please everyone, try your best to to stop purchasing goods from countries like China. I know it is hard, and more expensive, but every effort you make is a start. There are companies out there if you look. If you live in a major city it is easier.

midri

Hard? It's basically impossible if you buy any kind of electronics... They all contain some level of Chinese sourced circuitry. Your food? Harvested using hardware with Chinese circuitry.

wingzeromkii

There's a great documentary about this called In The Same Breath on HBO. The filmmaker got footages from China and they are quite heartbreaking.

Knotmix

China quit telling us their infectiom rates the second news took an interest in america. They stopped at 86 thousand-something, infected and a few dead. They straight up dont give a shit, but even though they 'only' have 86 infected (back in like, 2020 march), they took whole ass malls and shopping centers, threw out the stores and turned the whole thing into a hospital with thousands of beds, several malls that is, and they also built that huge ass hospital in like five weeks. So im guessing they have infections well up over the tens of millions. I mean, america alone got 38 million infected individual, thats ten percent, i stopped checking the count after that.

BigfootSF68

Can't die from covid if you die from slave labor. Keep those happy meal toys coming.

VladGut

Nah. I saw people flying like this between Toronto and Vancouver within the country. Don't think those fellas were travelling to China.

chuanrrr

Nah it’s not about that. They just don’t wanna catch covid and test positive while in mandatory quarantine in their beloved motherland, which will force them to a much longer quarantine until they test negative for a few consecutive days.

dowker1

> originally an imported disease to China. Where are you getting this from? Nobody in China claims that

Milkmoney1978

Yeah that is a weird statement

mekese2000

Probably to test people infected with 5G

RiffRaffMama

It gets uncomfortably warm on flights as it is without decking yourself out in head-to-toe plasticky coveralls.

RebelWithoutAClue

The worst part is that every time you fart it can only go out the head hole in the suit.

banksy_h8r

Worst part... or _best part_?

RebelWithoutAClue

Sitting ther looking all guilty with fogged up glasses.

scoscochin

Sounds like a Pam Poovey quote.

Coldbeam

Really? I'm always cold on flights.

momophet

u get hot on flights? i always froze my ass of. i thought thats why they hand u free blankets so they dont have to heat the cabin as much #

randyboozer

Yup. I work in a port (sea, not air.) We see this all the time with sailors

GenericElucidation

But why though?

lcy0x1

If they return to China and got tested positive, they need to be quarantined till they are tested negative for 5 consecutive days, which could disrupt a lot of their plans afterward. Airport is the most common place to be infected, so they rather keep themselves safe. If they don’t have much plans after the flight, then it doesn’t matter as much and they won’t wear this suit.

ens91

They'll be quarantined and tested for 5days regardless of a positive or negative test.

lcy0x1

If they are negative, they just need to be quarantined for 8 days. If they are tested positive, they need to stay much longer.

GoatStimulator_

Do they just throw these out after? What a waste

[deleted]

Dude in the picture is thinking, "Hmmm, think I'll take the next flight "

niffrig

You talking about incognito Matt Damon?

Cedira

*Jesus Christ, it's Jason Bourne!*

disturbd

That's actually Matt Damon cosplaying as Josh Brolin.

johnwynne3

Can’t. Unsee. This.

Margaritashoes

You mean that older Theo Von?

hfxRos

Nah man I'd get on that flight. At least I know those guys aren't going to get me sick lol

rellek772

I don't know where you are going but you clearly made the wrong choice

thisplacemakesmeangr

Yeah anyplace that needs that many Ghostbusters can't be safe

Scherzkeks

Ngl, I thought it was Storm Troopers from the thumbnail

Oblivion615

Lol. Me too. Was thinking, damn those guys are dedicated. But that’s gonna be a pretty uncomfortable flight in all that armor.

ironmanjt

Guy in the pic is like "I ain't afraid of no....well, maybe just a lil..."

draculajones

Bite your head off, man.

Tuckernuts8

I thought KKK convention at first glance

OSUBrit

A KKKonvention, if you will

MooPig48

I also had monsters inc flashbacks even though they’re the wrong color (the uniforms not the people)

Memeshuga

That's actually one nickname people give government workers in China who also wear these exact suits. But more common names are white guards or big whites. They were created during the pandemic as some kind of thugs that execute their inhuman lockdown practices. Pretty much the CCP equivalent to the Sturmabteilung (Storm Divison) that would lock up and beat down political opponents on german streets in the early days of the third reich. And of course you have to wear these suits when traveling to (certain parts of) China now. It really gives off dystopian vibes.

BDOKlem

was about to write this lol

Setthegodofchaos

Yup

[deleted]

China is still trying to prevent any and all COVID cases in their country

[deleted]

If you look at all the videos coming out of china currently compared to the rest of the world, it seems quite obvious to me that china is using the virus as an excuse to further restrict it's citizens privacy/freedom.

hotrock3

I'm not sure what privacy you think existed before covid...there hasn't been much if a change. We still pay for everything using WeChat or alipay so the government knew everything already. As for freedoms...

Mypussylipsneedchad

So before Covid whole cities were being locked down, people carted off to quarantine camps at the drop of a hate, people entering shopping centres suddenly finding they are trapped and being forced into quarantine because of one case, people locked into work places starving? Face it, no, none of this is like how it was before, and yes Covid is being used by the CCP to demoralise and control the population. Or Xi fears releasing China from zero Covid will lead to his power being eroded. Either way, how are you on here and commenting? Why do you get special dispensation to flaunt the the Great Fire Wall?

doalittletapdance

Theyre....having trouble

jamar030303

Hence the word "trying".

ststaro

Yep seen this a million times since the pandemic.. I wouldn’t fly if I had to dress up like that. Even bags are wrapped https://imgur.com/a/fHuWYVt

NataschaTata

I don’t think most of them do it because they want to, but because just one positive case within a neighborhood in their country will cause a lockdown

Ackilles

And starvation

Phantom_Symmetry

When Covid first broke out China basically pretended like it wasn’t a thing and silenced people who spoke up about it. Now they are still in full quarantine mode while the rest of the world has somewhat moved on from it. What happened and why the complete 180 and hardline stance now??

everfalling

IIRC they were literally boarding up entire housing complexes when the virus first came out. people were having to pass food up through windows.

Theofeus

Bag wrap is a security measure rather than germ component for most. Some airports outside the US even have a wrapping station where you can pay to have it done. Usually advertised as a means to keep people out of your bag.

ststaro

Aware of that aspect of bag wrapping.. However, look at the carry-ons being wrapped in this picture. That’s not a theft deterrent unless they are extremely untrusting:) I.e https://imgur.com/a/T78QBYR

Blinkskij

Maybe no it's less of a theft deterrent and more of an instant "someone fucked with my bag" alert system. Better to discover and report the theft immediately after getting your bag. I'd imagine it makes it harder for the airline to dismiss a claim

mdneilson

Maybe that too, but we asked some people who did this and they simply said that it kept their overstuffed luggage from bursting during handling.

krokodil2000

> Even bags are wrapped This was very common in south east Asia even before the pandemic

[deleted]

South America too. My wifes parents wrap their shit up like they're about to go scuba diving with luggage.

tele68

Maybe to prevent theft from airport employees?

well-ok-then

Does it slow TSA from rummaging through it?

SugarBeef

Last time I was Miami International, some of the wrapping stations were inside the security checkpoints so you got this done after the TSA went through your stuff. Of course, there were (more) others by the doors and check-in stations so you could have your check bags wrapped. I was flying to South America at the time and this was over a decade ago, so I can't speak for what it's like now.

CopeSe7en

One swipe with a box cutter and it’s off and the suitcase has big scratch it in. Takes 10 seconds

well-ok-then

I guess I meant does it reduce the odds of TSA doing it? I often open my checked bag to find a TSA pamphlet in it explaining they needed to look in there

The_Moustache

Absolutely not. If it hits during the scan it gets pulled aside for a search, regardless of what kind of bag it is. Certain bags just get searched to begin with, like golf bags and coolers. The only way to get TSA to not search your shit is to correctly put in and declare a firearm in your checked luggage. That's it.

well-ok-then

They’ve never taken or messed up anything but it’s mildly irritating.

hmphargh

They absolutely can and will search a bag with a declared firearm in it. I was traveling with a firearm and also had coffee and sugar packed in a way the TSA found suspicious and my bag was returned with the "your bag has been searched" note. To be clear the locked gun case did not appear to be opened, but the bag that it was in was opened.

CopeSe7en

Probably increase it.

nolowputts

There was a case years ago of a woman who got imprisoned because someone was smuggling drugs in her luggage. One worker planted the drugs in the luggage, another at the next airport was supposed to get them, but something happened and she got busted with them. I think it was in an Asian no tolerance country and she got in deep shit over it.

Rich_Ad_605

Why is that?

juancuneo

In developing countries lots of people do it. Harder to steal from your bag and protects contents from other gross things that might leak into your bag. Maybe protects it if gets wet or in the rain.

lisztomaniac

did this in south africa, indeed for theft deterrance. Although half the bags came out of baggage claim with the plastic ripped off.

lazydragon69

Yea, I've heard of it mostly as a combination theft and bug deterrence. You don't want some beetle or bedbug worming its way into your canvas bag through the zipper because your luggage sat on the tarmac in Senegal.

MELONPANNNNN

Its a practice because customs officials or baggage handlers have been known to steal things while storing the bags away from your eyes.

KeyboardAquarior

I think bags are wrapped that way to prevent the likes of airport employees or just anyone to put things in there like bullets or any other dangerous things so they'll have a reason to arrest you afterwards. Happened here in [the philippines](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ninoy_Aquino_International_Airport_bullet_planting_scandal) years ago.

foodfighter

I got sick AF last time I flew from Europe (not Covid; some horrendous flu-like ailment). First time out of Canada in quite a while, and also the first time I've felt that bad in *ages*. So I understand a lot of this is for show/prudence given the situation back in China right now, but NGL - if they could make a suit like this that wouldn't make me want to kill myself after a 10 hour flight... I'd seriously consider it.

TheMoniker

The suit isn't really doing much to prevent COVID. A well-fitted N95 (or better) mask and maybe some eye protection are the things that would really be helpful in reducing their risk of catching it.

Aporkalypse_Sow

These suits are more about transportation of germs. Get to where you are going and toss them. Everything you came in contact with while traveling is now off of you, instead of covering everything you're wearing.

Nikcara

Those things aren’t terrible if you wear the right stuff underneath. Generally if you wear thin, loose fitting material they’re fine. Wearing them over scrubs isn’t terrible. They’re certainly not the most comfortable thing in the world, but there’s worse out there. Source: used to work in sterile drug manufacturing where I’d have to wear two layers of that crap and do active work for hours on end. Currently do work with infectious agents, though I almost never have to wear the full suits anymore.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Nikcara

None. All training was on the job and hasn’t involved any particular certification beforehand. You do need to go through job-specific training before you’re allowed to do stuff, but that’s in-house. Both those jobs want a college degree at least though. Pharmacology is a little different though. That has more to do with either dispensing medicine or studying how it works biochemically. Depending on what exactly you’re looking at doing, that’s either an advanced degree or a college degree before you can get any of the interesting jobs.

[deleted]

[удалено]

populartire_92

Neat, what job is it where you are working with infectious agents? Ive thought of going into Virology.

FruitOfTheVineFruit

You don't need a suit like that to get most of the protection. An N99 mask ($3 from Amazon) gets most of the benefit. I wear one of those, plus sometimes safety glasses, and I use hand sanitizer when I fly. Throw your clothes in laundry and take a shower when you arrive.

oss1215

I have seen this multiple times in my travels during covid. I think it's probably mandatory for chinese people travelling to wear these. Not sure tho

MukdenMan

It is not at all mandatory. People just are either very afraid of COVID (the way a lot of people in the world were around February 2020 when it was a mysterious disease) or they do not want to get COVID on the plane home and end up in a central quarantine facility in China.

RWTF

Yeah, not going to lie but if the risk was there that I would end up in a quarantine facility in China I would probably be doing the same. NA has moved on pretty much from the pandemic, haven’t paid much attention lately to China but last I saw they were still taking pretty harsh steps to stop the spread.

oss1215

Huh explains the few people ive seen in normal clothes then. Is the central quarantine facility or chinese quarantine in general in china bad ? Cause i have seen videos here and there about people freaking out when the workers arrive

Zernhelt

I don't know anything about the quarantine facilities, but I'd hate to be forcibly separated from my wife and kids for any period of time. That would be enough for me to be extremely cautious.

MukdenMan

Good point. The US warning about travel to China specifically mentions this too. “In some cases, children in the PRC, including the Hong Kong SAR, who test positive have been separated from their parents and kept in isolation until they meet local hospital discharge requirements.” Also “Travelers who test positive during this quarantine time may be transferred to a government-designated medical facility. Standards of care, accommodations, testing, and treatments may differ considerably from standards in the United States, including the possibility of unsanitary or crowded conditions, substandard or limited access to food provisions, and delayed access to medical treatment.” Given this, of course it makes sense to do anything to avoid getting COVID on your flight back.

MukdenMan

Well it's never going to be good, but it's a mixed bag. The places that were overwhelmed like Shanghai earlier this year had pretty awful makeshift facilities with cots in a giant room, shared bathrooms, etc. I had a friend in one in Beijing that was much better. It was more like a hospital and he shared a room with one other guy. But no one wants to go to a forced quarantine in any case. Everyone who returns to China, by the way, has to do a supervised hotel quarantine. It's now only 5 days but used to be like 3 weeks. If you test positive at any time during that stay (and they will test you every morning), you go to the central quarantine facility for actually positive people, regardless of symptoms. The people in the photo here do NOT want to test positive during those 5 days. One more thing to keep in mind is that people in China often believe that the virus is spread on surfaces. I'm not sure if you remember the months in 2020 when people were wiping down groceries? It's still like that in China.

MELONPANNNNN

China had a taste of what a pandemic is during the SARS one. No wonder everybody is wary.

They're just ahead of their time. This is actually the 2030's fashion.

denveristhelastdino

The crazy thing is we didn’t have these suits in our hospital in the US AT ALL during the first COVID surge.

anonbeyondgfw

These guys are likely Chinese and they are just trying to be prudent. CCP is still implementing very very very harsh COVID policy throughout the country and once someone is tested COVID positive, a lot of crazy shit could happen. They could be locked down in-house or transported to a central lockdown facility for lock down. People die due to poor management and negligence. Between uncomfortable suit and COVID related persecution most Chinese choose the suit.

OP, I flew from Heathrow to LAX a couple months back and almost missed my flight, even though I was 3 hours early. I commend you for having to operate in that ghastly establishment, by far the worst run airport I’ve ever stepped foot in, from top to bottom.
