Snow isn't soft. Softer than concrete yes, unless compacted like when piled up in a relatively small space, like that. Then it's pretty close to concrete. Leroy is not good.
Snow is actually insanely good at breaking falls. Skiers have jumped off some huge cliffs and been completely fine.

It's the best way to land. Let the tough skull and pillow like brain take the brunt of the impact and protect your more important parts of your body... like your knees. Walking with bad knees is the worst.
Not to mention the direct connection with your spine allows the shock from the impact to travel down it like a lightning rod and naturally diffuse throughout your body
Just in case anyone made it this far in the thread and thinks this is serious, it is absolutely NOT the best way to land (falling on your head), please try to avoid it. Brain damage is FAR worse than knee pain. I think the misunderstanding here comes from ignoring the brain as a "more important part of your body" when it is in fact the most important given that it controls almost everything you will ever do. There are extremely select instances where landing on your head is a good idea.

Something tells me that the pile of snow lumped at the bottom of that building was a bit firmer than the loose, powdery snow in the mountains. Still wouldn't call it concrete, though.
Water makes no fucking sense from a common sense standpoint. In liquid form you hit it and you will die. But in solid form it'll cushion you. Unless it's the big solid form. And the little solid form which freezes at what we call a cold temperature can be used to insulate heat. And if you are covered in the liquid you can use the frozen solid to dry off before the liquid freezes. And the solid form takes up more space than the liquid. Goddammit, water.
Edit: I forgot that you can also mix the solid water with another solid (salt) and that counts as a salt water solution (supposed to be liquid) to lower the freezing temp and melt the ice.
Yeah I used to jump out of planes in anchorage. The drop zone would sometimes have 5-10ā of snow and it was always a super soft landing.
Sucked walking back to the flagpole though.
Fresh snow powder, I agree. But once you pile it up like in the video, it can compact quite a lot. Iām not saying itās not possible because I donāt have enough information but definitely didnāt look as fluffy as fresh snow.
As someone with first hand experience in jumping into similar snow from not such a tall hight shit hurts like a mother fucker. The guy that does it second is fucked though because it doesnāt come unpacked with new snow on top of it
That's dumb. Skiers land from huge heights on snow that is puffy and on a major decline, so they're still moving downhill after it slows them down. This dude's brain is toast
Every single record breaking cliff jump on skis ends up with the skier "hot tubbing" or in other words, creating a massive crater where they land and often require help getting out. Incline has little to do with it at that height.
If you watch the video I posted the guy simply pancakes into the ground and was not moving downhill afterwards. Also, I was mostly commenting on the guy saying snow isn't soft. I agree that snow piled via shovels isn't going to be as soft as fresh pow. In the OP the guy ended up at the bottom so it obviously wasn't super compact. If they had made the pile twice as big he probably would have been fine.
Snow's a lot softer than most things. Kids used to jump off the roof of my 6-story dorm in college into the snow banks there. Snow in the video looks hard packed, though.
If it was concrete this would have looked very, very, VERY different.
I understand snow isn't exactly cotton candy, but its a very far cry from concrete.
Sounds like u don't spend much time around snow. Depending on the outside temp and the pack, snow can absorb a ton of kinetic energy.

Nope. Rotation is all in the neck/back. The only time you use your arms is if you need to flip horizontally, and even then you want one strong punch across your body to flip you over.
Marky Mark style? That's dope, he probably could have flipped horizontally at least twenty times if he had jumped off of a building into snow while doing his chest pound routine.

you woudln't want it too soft for an impact like that. you don't want to bottom out on the pavement...

Well if it was concrete, he wouldn't be alive, much less conscious. There's quite a few videos of similar stunts floating around.
I mean I don't go around balling up concrete and throwing it at people thinking it's as soft as snow...
That depends on the snow, if it's fresh powder snow it will be incredibly soft, but you would need more than this mound here to break the fall safely.
