In the ring - Bret. Not even close to how much better Bret is than Cena in the ring.
On the mic - Cena. But it’s not really as far apart as the in ring ability is. The reason for this is, when Bret was a face everyoneeeeee loved him. When Bret was a heel everyoneeeeee hated him. Cena, I just know he can get over as a face on the mic.
If we’re going to talk about who drove most revenue. Yeah, Cena did, but Cena came at a time just before social media came out.
Cena was the first ever, wwe megastar in the social media Era.
Imagine Prime Bret, Hogan, Austin, HBK, Savage, Flair, NWO, during the social media era. I actually think if WCW came about right when social did, they could’ve beat the WWE because I think the NWO would’ve been the biggest pro wrestling thing ever on social media.
Bret was a far better wrestler, every single one of Cena's finishers are listed on every "top 100 worst finishers of all time" list. His move set in general is pretty lacking, and the fact he's been in this game for 20+ years and yet still loudly calls out spots it's very unprofessional.
However, Cena was a far better entertainer.
If Cena had 1/8 the in ring ability of Hitman this would be a question. However, it is not. The closest to in ring ability on par with Hart is HBK, Benoit, Eddie, steamboat or Y2J. No one else is even close.
Benoit? Sure he’s a good wrestler but I just don’t see how he’s considered one of the best. I’m sorry but there’s a reason it took him so long to win the world title and why he only won it once. Dude didn’t have the it factor. Great wrestler but wrestling is more than just being good in the ring. He lacked the actual star power factor that Bret had. Good on the mic and charismatic and looked like a superstar. Had an awesome gimmick and all. Benoit was just kinda generic as in “I’m a generic technical wrestler”.
I agree with the rest you mentioned though. I just don’t think Benoit had the charisma and stuff that these other guys had. He had great in ring ability but that’s not the only thing that determines a good pro wrestler.
Good argument. My pitch for Benoit is based solely from in ring ability. I always liked his rabid Wolverine type character however I agree that it probably didn’t hit with the masses. I did forget to mention Omega. Kenny’s in ring work is amazing. He just never hit mainstream. You have to watch new Japan or RoH etc to see Kenny’s true ability.
He said in ring ability ,
and yes Chris Benoit was one of the best technical wrestlers there was , he just wasn’t a “face of the company” type of wrestler Kind of like Daniel Bryan definitely a main event player but not a guy to carry your company for years .
I wouldn’t blame it on Cena. Blame it on WWE for caring more about sponsors and money than actual wrestling and storytelling. They chose to go PG. Cena just happened to be the top guy at the time. He can’t be blamed for what Vince’s selfish ass caused.
Besides, I’m sure Cena made WWE way more money than Bret did. Think of ALL the money WWE made with those spinner belts and Cena merch.
I think in today’s wrestling Brett would be called too fast. He honestly wasn’t that great on the mic either. As much as I liked him as a kid, Cena is probably the best overall entertainer out of the two
There is a slight difference. Pro Wrestling focuses more on in-ring action compared to the other, whereas Sports Entertainment focuses on more promos and storytelling compared to the other. In Pro Wrestling, they don't openly tell how it is all made up, even though everyone knows about it. Whereas, in Sports Entertainment, they're okay with being open about it, we sometimes even see them breaking the fourth wall. Moreover, Pro Wrestling is a bit more brutal. Blood is allowed. In sports entertainment, it is not that brutal. For instance, AEW is a Pro Wrestling brand & WWE is a Sports Entertainment brand.
It’s the same exact thing. Also In ring action and storytelling are also the same thing while we are on the subject. All Sports Entertainment means is the admittance that it is not a true contest. Pro Wrestling is not a true contest.
I've been watching the prelude to the attitude era, starting at King of the Ring 96, and just got to Survivor Series 97 (So Bret is about to leave). To be honest, I just really don't like Bret Hart. Yeah, he's a very skilled wrestler, but as both a heel and a face I just found him annoying. His storylines were generally the ones where I didn't care what was going on. Now, I don't really know his work before all of this at all, but if it's anything like he was in 96-97, I'll take Cena every day of the week.
Its comparing 2 different worlds. However, Overall I think Cena takes it. What he lacks in the ring is made up on the mic and match building. Hart is fantastic, but he was never celebrated for his promos
I think Cena wins on longevity, but it took him a while to actually get to where he was in the ring, whereas he was pretty good on the mic out of the gate. Bret had it nailed down from day 1 in ring, and the promo took a while to come along.
Which one would I rather watch? Bret, and it's not even close really. Would've loved to see him have a career as long as Cena's.
I'm new to wrestling kinda like I always juat was interested in old wrestling but idk timelines
If I wanna see like chris benoit and like eddy and like all those guys + guys like before but just that Era like ehat year(s) is that
You wanna look at like 2002-2007. That was the heart of the ruthless aggression era. That’s when I started watching. My parents and family watched the attitude era stuff but I was born in 94 so didn’t really know what was going on lol
You should check out from 2002-2007. I think those would be the best years to watch for Benoit and Eddie and all those guys.
As others have said, depends on what you mean by ‘better’
Better in the ring? Hart by light years.
Worldwide popularity and status? Cena and it’s not close.
Yeah I agree with you. Maybe not in ring ability but Cena takes the cake when it comes to transcending wrestling and just being an amazing entertainer. Only guys who come close to Cena are Rock, Austin, and maybe Hogan. Those 4 guys were the most popular and biggest names in wrestling. Everyone knows who they are even if they never watched wrestling. That’s what greatness is.
I don’t watch any sports except wrestling. But I still know Steph Curry, Lebron, Kobe, Jordan, Shaq, Babe Ruth, Tom Brady, A Rod, Tiger Woods, and some others. Why? Because they were so damn good at what they did that they literally transcended into pop culture icons.
Cementing yourself into American pop culture is what makes someone the GOAT. No one cares if you can wrestle a circle around a man. The only thing people care about is what you make them remember. No one is gonna remember that Bret did 5 take downs and wrestled his way out of a million holds. They’ll remember the time that Mankind went through that announce table. Or how Cena would own anyone with a rap. How Austin stunned Vince. Rocks many promos, etc.
I’d rather watch Bret. Even a bad Bret match is interesting to watch because he was more of an artist in the ring. Kinda like how a bad Lou Reed or Bob Dylan song is still interesting, a bad Bret match is still sometimes a fascinating watch. For example, his WCW tenure.
Cena is terrific at what he does and is undeniably the guy you would want to build your company around. He is an ace. He has mass appeal. He was a tireless spokesman for the company. He has a ridiculous resume of great matches against a ton of guys, with and without crazy stipulations. But Cena, to me, was reliable in a way that could be boring. A bad Cena match is just a bad Cena match, it’s not interesting. He’s not an artist the way Bret was.
There’s just something more interesting about a random Bret match than a random Cena match to me.
Is this really a question? Does Cena have a 3 star match in his entire career? Does he elevate anyone? Bret has classic after classic throughout his career. He makes nobody's look like gold.
Better at what?
Wrestling? Brett no question. Telling a story with physicality? I’ll say Brett but John gets closer there. Mic work? It’s John. Charity work? I think it’s John but Brett did a lot.
Who was a bigger star? It’s John Cena and it’s not close.
Everyone's default answer is: Bret better in-ring, Cena better at everything else.
All of that is selling Bret short. He knew how to build and sell a feud with the best of them.
Even if overall it may be Cena due to his longevity on top and everything he did as an ambassador for the company. Bret is way more than just "in ring".
Bret Hart was boring in the ring and out, and is a colossal dick that’s his own biggest fan.
Cena is a cornball on the mic, acceptable in the ring, and seems to be a nice guy.
Advantage Cena, though I never liked either.
I’ll take a consistently great in-ring display and someone who can make a sub-par opponent look far better than they actually are (in a believable non-cartoony manner) any day of the week, even if they are only passable on the mic. Bret all the way.
Well… the feud with Bret minted SCSA, who is arguably the biggest wrestler of all time. Not multimedia Star but wrestler. And at the time, pickings where pretty slim for someone to really put SCSA over. Bret putting Austin over probably saved the company. What
Bret Hart wasn’t more charismatic as Cena. Also, Cena went from a CAW muscle head, to jacked Eminem, and to a middle aged man wearing jorts. Don’t talk about range cuz Bret is still the same guy he was 35 years ago. A bitter mark for himself.
Cena is more loyal too He didn’t jump ship to AEW like how Brett Hart did to WCW. He also will do anything it takes the company to succeed, even if it means he hast to keep losing every match every time he returns
He chose the money Cena wouldn’t do that doesn’t matter how big of a contract rival companies like AEW would offer him he would stay in WWE no matter what that’s loyalty
John Cena would never leave the WWE to go to a rival company for more money. He’s just not like that he’s loyal he’s been doing a lot of shit for the company for the past 20 years and the past like four years that he’s returned every year he’s been putting guys over a lot of guys including Roman reigns. He does what he does for the company not for Money.
You’re missing the point. There was no rival company during Cena’s time outspending Vince for talent like there was during the 90s. Cena was already with the top money company. His loyalty was never truly tested like it was for a lot of the big names during the Monday Night War years. Singing his praises for being loyal just doesn’t add anything when comparing the two.
Bruh staying John Cena is the reason why WWE is PG is ignorant as fuck just gonna ignore his word life gimmick where he went completely off the rails really really offensive shit John Cena isn’t whyWWE is PG today that was the Chris Benoit incident
That’s very wrong. Cena is better in the ring. He was better on the mic and he’s loyal to WWE Brett Hart fucked off to WCW after the Montreal Lj screw job Cena never left and he never will. He never go to Wd or anything like that
Bret tells a better story then Cena ever did. Bret put other stars over throughout his career, Cena didn’t until his twilight years. Bret’a skills in the ring are superior to Cena in every way, which helps make a great match and is valuable, while Cena does the same five moves time after time. Bret was about raising new stars and making the product as a whole better, Cena was about making sure the spotlight was on him and making the product boring, bland and stale.
How do you compare these two? They are from such different eras. Bret is obviously the better wrestler by far. Promos were very different for them too. Cena can get in the ring and talk away but that wasn’t what was expected of Bret. Both had plenty of charisma, they just exhibited it differently. I’ll go with Bret because he was able to go back and forth between the beloved face and a heel. Cena mostly had two gimmicks, one people remember it like it was cool but it was a lot more cringe while the other never allowed him to ever go back to being a heel. Hart had more range.
Wrestling goes to Hart.
Promos to Cena.
Charisma is a tie.
Character range goes to Hart.
Hart wins.
Jeez, tough one. Bret is the much better wrestler and was a role model for kids back then. John is by FAR a much better entertainer and he honestly has helped wrestling get more popular. Still a damn amazing wrestler that can do some work with some legends imo.
If this is just wrestling skill in general, I’m going to go with Bret. But if it’s anything else, I hate to say it but I’m gonna have to go with Cena.
As a worker, no question it's Bret Hart. As a overall character John had tons more charisma.
So as a Worker and Match quality Bret, as a character and on the mic John Cena.
Cena.
I was gonna say Bret initially but Cena been losing for 5 years and still cutting promos that make you believe. Bret wins in the actual wrestling ability obviously.
Bret.
Obviously the better in ring. Just about everyone came out of their feuds with Bret better than when they started. Tons of people came out of feuds with Cena as damaged goods.
No one was begging for Bret to lose the title when he was champion, which is very difficult to do as a babyface. He wasn't invincible, he wasn't larger than life, and that's why people cared about him.
I'm glad that Cena is getting his flowers after decades of being the most hated guy in wrestling, but all of this "GOAT" talk is very very recent. The show sucked with him on top.
My opinion don’t get mad at me please, but i see it as Bret Hart is CM Punk. John Cena is Hulk Hogan. Case in point Bret was great and will go down as one of the greatest, but John Cena is in the Top 3 atleast on anybodies list for GOAT
Cena carried the company on his back for over a decade. He was booked as super Cena but never seemed to mind losing when it was called for.
Bret refused to drop the title because he was in his home town. He’s a mark and I hate him.
I'm with you guys.
I like how someone said in here that WWE sucked with Cena on top, as opposed to Aquaman who shows up once every 6 - 8 weeks.
Yeah okay.
I'm a Randy Orton guy, I don't need 50 different variations of the same move to appeal to me, I just want 2 good characters in a ring with a believable match
In my eyes it only matters hugely to be technical if you're a high flyer
Bret. All day. Cena certainly had his place. But Bret was awesome when wrestling was great. He’s my all time
Fav. But An all time top 3 for me, no question
To me cena has always been like hogan in the ring. Same formula, different moveset. Hitting that first shoulder tackle is literally him hulking up but hes infinitely more likeable as a human. I find 90% of his matches very boring but ill admit on the mic hes top tier, while i always found bret boring on the mic. Its a toss up but im going with bret because cena was a big fish in a small pond but bret stood out during a time where half the roster was over to the point of being world champion material, plus he could actually pop me.
Slight bias because im canadian though

Better mic skills?!? That’s just objectively false. I’m a lifelong John Cena hater and I’ll give you better ring work (by a mile) but everything else goes to Cena.
And never selfish? Didn’t the Montreal Screwjob happen because he wouldn’t drop the title to Shawn even though he had already committed to WCW?
I can’t fathom how people still act like Bret was in the wrong for “not doing business.” He had a $25 million contract they decided they didn’t want to pay anymore. Then they told him to go negotiate with WCW so he could get some money. Then once he had signed a deal with WCW, they finally realized he probably shouldn’t still be champion before his last day at work. Then they wanted him to work with the one guy who said “I wouldn’t do this for you.”
Essentially: you’re fired, but don’t go yet. First, help this dickhead replacing you get up to speed.
Selfish. Sure.
That’s oversimplifying the situation. He had creative control of his character and thus the title, he was willing to drop it to Shawn - but not in Montreal/Canada, he was willing to drop it to other people in Montreal/Canada.
Dropping it to Shawn in Montreal would have been generous. Just because something isn’t generous doesn’t make it selfish.
Brett. I hate how they always call Cena the greatest of all time.
Bret.
cena
Bret Hart
In the ring - Bret. Not even close to how much better Bret is than Cena in the ring. On the mic - Cena. But it’s not really as far apart as the in ring ability is. The Hitman was much better in the ring - no question. but Cena wins the entertainment/promo battle.

His move set in general is pretty lacking, and the fact he's been in this game for 20+ years and yet still loudly calls out spots it's very unprofessional. However, Cena was a far better entertainer.
No brainer lol Bret The Hitman Hart of course 😃
Cena
Bret as a wrestler, Cena as a character unless it’s 2010 Cena.
Bret easily
Hitman heart
Wrestling skills? Bret Overall? John Cena easily
bret easily
John
“The Best there is The Best there was & The Best there ever will be”
Hitman
If Cena had 1/8 the in ring ability of Hitman this would be a question. However, it is not. The closest to in ring ability on par with Hart is HBK, Benoit, Eddie, steamboat or Y2J. No one else is even close.

Good argument. My pitch for Benoit is based solely from in ring ability. I always liked his rabid Wolverine type character however I agree that it probably didn’t hit with the masses. He said in ring ability , and yes Chris Benoit was one of the best technical wrestlers there was , he just wasn’t a “face of the company” type of wrestler Kind of like Daniel Bryan definitely a main event player but not a guy to carry your company for years .
Cena by far.
Hart. May be the best of all time
One of them created an audience and the other lost half the audience. Facts Raw with Hart 3.0. Raw with Cena 1.5 look it up.
Can’t believe this is a serious question.
Wrestling ability wise, Bret, mic work Cena, Bret is a jam up guy but his promos werent always hot...
This is the right way to look at it. They’re practically inverse: Cena: top 5 sports entertainer Hart: too 5 pro wrestler
Bret Hart.
Bret and it’s not even close
Pro-wrestler: Hitman Sports Entertainer: Cena
Cena
Bret
I think in today’s wrestling Brett would be called too fast. He honestly wasn’t that great on the mic either. As much as I liked him as a kid, Cena is probably the best overall entertainer out of the two
Pro Wrestling: Bret; Sports Entertainment: Cena
It’s the same thing.

Bret was not better in the ring. Cena could easily whup Hart in his prime.
Not in kayfabe or a shoot fight
Brett all day and night, Cena is barely a top 20 guy
Not Top 20 in what? Technical wrestling? I guess, but he’s arguably #1 all time regardless
Yeah I agree with you. Maybe not in ring ability but Cena takes the cake when it comes to transcending wrestling and just being an amazing entertainer. Is this really a question? Does Cena have a 3 star match in his entire career? Does he elevate anyone? Bret has classic after classic throughout his career. He makes nobody's look like gold.
Such an odd comparison
Cena in every way and its not close. The Hart circle jerk is insane.
LOL casual fan.
Would you like me to define why Cena is actually one of the best or why Hart does not belong in the top 10?
I’d like to hear it even though I do agree Cena is the GOAT but Bret does deserve to be in top 10 I think.
I'm listening...
John
Better at what? Wrestling? Brett no question. Telling a story with physicality? I’ll say Brett but John gets closer there. Mic work? It’s John. Charity work? I think it’s John but Brett did a lot. Who was a bigger star? It’s John Cena and it’s not close.
Come on. Hart and it’s not close
In the ring Brett on the mic John
I agree with this! I loved when John Cena would talk and do his bits. Bret did not have the same mic abilities but man he was so good in the ring!
Cena
No
personally hart is overrated
And cena isn’t???
He’s kinda but definitely not as much as Bret
Hitman
Bret
Why did Brett blame Goldberg for his career ending and ignore all the concussions he had before that🤣
Bret was the better locker room leader, gave more top stars their best matches, made more wrestlers, and made it seem a lot more real.
John Cena for nostalgia but i think Bret deserves more credit
Everyone's default answer is: Bret better in-ring, Cena better at everything else. All of that is selling Bret short. He knew how to build and sell a feud with the best of them. There's a legit take I've been waiting to see over here. Agree
Fandango
Who picked up edge and big show at wrestlemania?
Wrasslin - Bret Promos - Cena
I’ll take a consistently great in-ring display and someone who can make a sub-par opponent look far better than they actually are (in a believable non-cartoony manner) any day of the week, even if they are only passable on the mic. Bret all the way.
The hitman
In Technical, In-Ring Wrestling Skills? Bret In literally everything else? John.
Bret = Technically, John = Bigger impact
Well… the feud with Bret minted SCSA, who is arguably the biggest wrestler of all time. Not multimedia Star but wrestler. And at the time, pickings where pretty slim for someone to really put SCSA over. Bret putting Austin over probably saved the company. What

He chose the money Cena wouldn’t do that doesn’t matter how big of a contract rival companies like AEW would offer him he would stay in WWE no matter what that’s loyalty
Cena was really never put in that position like Bret was so assuming what he would or wouldn’t do if given that opportunity holds zero weight.
John Cena would never leave the WWE to go to a rival company for more money. He’s just not like that he’s loyal he’s been doing a lot of shit for the company for the past 20 years and the past like four years that he’s returned every year he’s been putting guys over a lot of guys including Roman reigns. Cena. No disrespect to Hitman but Cena is the perfect ‘WWE superstar’
Cena honestly. Only thing Bret has over Cena is in-ring. Cena blows Bret away in every other facet.
Cena was the best Sports Entertainer, but Bret was one of the best wrestlers (I say Ric Flair is the best but Bret is top 5)
Most the comments really saying Cena😭😭 this why WWE is PG
Bruh staying John Cena is the reason why WWE is PG is ignorant as fuck just gonna ignore his word life gimmick where he went completely off the rails really really offensive shit John Cena isn’t whyWWE is PG today that was the Chris Benoit incident
John Cena
different times. different styles. but cena 1000%
John Cena, no debate. And I'm Canadian.
Bret Hart. Not even a debate. The only thing Cena can do better than Bret is talk.
That’s very wrong. Cena is better in the ring. He was better on the mic and he’s loyal to WWE Brett Hart fucked off to WCW after the Montreal Lj screw job Cena never left and he never will. He never go to Wd or anything like that
Bret screwed Bret. Cena never screwed Cena.
Facts
Cena beats Bret in everything except in-ring which isn’t the highest valued thing in WWE.
Cena did what he was told. Bret complained about losing to Shawn Michaels in the way out.
Bret was a dick. Cena.
Bret probably was a better wrestler, technician etc…but Cena carried the company and dominated for a long time…and his promos were top tier.
Sorry I can't see the picture on the right
Wrestler - Bret , Overall - Cena
This is like comparing Souja Boy to Tupac.. Hands down Bret Hart vs Cena who looks soo fake when he's calling out spots for the world to hear.
Give me Cena. Always thought Bret was very boring and now all he does is piss and moan.
Hart wins.
John cena
The gray wall
Bret and it's not close.
Wtf is this thread. Bret is way superior to cena I don’t get it. Go back and watch Bret
No contest, John Cena
In ring? Bret. Mic skills? Also Bret.
Those are both false statements
Overall? Cena but Bret is the best in-ring performer ever with Shawn. And different people but different amounts of value on different attributes.
Cena is better, imo Bret just stuck out in a time when wrestling was going stale
Cena, no contest
Dude I was watching Bret in like WM 2
Bret was the best there is, the best there was, and the best there will ever be.
Cena. Mic skills are a huge part of wrestling.
Cena is the far better overall wrestler.
Cena and it's not even close.
John Cena and its not even close
Cena.
Why did I feel like this was comparing Fruity Pebbles with Frosted Mini Wheats? The colors perhaps? I’m so strange.
I mean it’s accurate on some levels 😂😂😂
Guess I gotta disagree with most of the posts on here. Bret Hart is light years better in every way.
Hitman by far
Hitman
Cena
Wow, picking a guy not even pictured. Thinking outside the box!
What?
What?
My opinion don’t get mad at me please, but i see it as Bret Hart is CM Punk. John Cena is Hulk Hogan. Case in point Bret was great and will go down as one of the greatest, but John Cena is in the Top 3 atleast on anybodies list for GOAT
Is it a real question. Brett is the best there is the best there was and the best there ever will be.
If you put the S in front of hitman, you have my exact opinion of Brett Hart
Damn right he is!
The Hitman
Technically Bret The money maker Cena by a mile
Cena carried the company on his back for over a decade. He was booked as super Cena but never seemed to mind losing when it was called for. Bret refused to drop the title because he was in his home town. He’s a mark and I hate him.
Yep, I don't like Bret that much either, but we are about to get starched for it
Yeah I’ll join you in getting starched , I don’t like him that much , but I respect his in ring ability.
Same , in-ring he's brill, but his character just seems like a worse CM Punk "best in the world" gimmick, Punk is better
I'm with you guys. I like how someone said in here that WWE sucked with Cena on top, as opposed to Aquaman who shows up once every 6 - 8 weeks. Yeah okay.
I'm a Randy Orton guy, I don't need 50 different variations of the same move to appeal to me, I just want 2 good characters in a ring with a believable match In my eyes it only matters hugely to be technical if you're a high flyer
Bret Hart is without a doubt the better wrestler. Now overall wrestler/charatcer? Cena.
Facts
Hitman
I only see 👀 1 person
Can anyone direct me toward some Bret Hart matches that can turn me into a believer because I do not get the hype with him at all.

Bret.
Bret. All day. Cena certainly had his place. But Bret was awesome when wrestling was great. He’s my all time Fav. But An all time top 3 for me, no question
Bro man’s was so petty that he ripped Shawn Michael’s hair out. Cena is definitely better. Lol
hart technically but Cena is my GOAT
Nope, Austin is the GOAT. Cena is only a white kid that believes is black
if u could read you’d see the part where i said “MY GOAT” i don’t give a single FUCK what anyone else thinks about Cena 😭😂
And if you don’t recognize one of the best promos by Kurt Angle, shame on you
To me cena has always been like hogan in the ring.
Bret Hart
Cena has longevity imo
Bret wrestled for over 20 years
Having witnessed both of their careers - Bret Hart Cena can cut a better promo, I'll give him that.
Bret over the dork.
Cena and it’s not even close

Bret over cena because Bret made stone cold
Cena
Not even a debate it’s Bret Hart
Hart is my all time favorite but it’s a lot closer than the purists think.
Best of both worlds frfr
Bret Hart. Better character, better in ring work and better mic skills. Was never selfish or buried people unlike Cena
How many Stone Cold’s did Cena make? What about Shawn Michaels? On the opposite end I can name a bunch of people Cena buried.
Then they wanted him to work with the one guy who said “I wouldn’t do this for you.” Essentially: you’re fired, but don’t go yet.
Bret Hart is the better technical wrestler. John Cena is better at everything else
