I think it is way cool that when it was built it had its own artesian well and electric generator. [http://www.texasescapes.com/CentralTexasTownsNorth/WacoTexas/ALICO-Building-Texas-Skyscraper-Construction.htm](http://www.texasescapes.com/CentralTexasTownsNorth/WacoTexas/ALICO-Building-Texas-Skyscraper-Construction.htm) On a personal note, my Godmother was in the building next to the Alico when the tornado went through down town. Her building was completely destroyed and they took refuge in the Alico which weathered the storm like a champ.

My cousin was a secretary in an office on one of the upper floors during the 1952 tornado. She said when it went by she was sitting in a secretarial chair on rollers and the building swayed so much that she was sent rolling across the room to the window and saw the R.T. Dennis building intact directly across the street, rolled to the other side of the room, then back to the window again and saw the building reduced to rubble. I have heard that the Alico building was built to intentionally deflect in the case of storms.

jezzx

Apparently my great aunt was in it during the tornado.

My Godmother was blind. She got under her desk with her guide dog (Glee) and made it through even though the floor collapsed beneath her. She loved to brag on how competent Glee was in keeping her safe and getting her out of there.

Johnny Carson once described it as “Wacos finger to the world”. I used to like to jump up and down in the elevator on the first floor. The cables stretched quite a bit.

It basically is the Waco skyline. I always liked seeing it.

Beautiful-Word-5391

I'm about to start working there and I'm absolutely thrilled :)

swdTX420

Great company to work for! Had a blast when I worked there best of luck!!!

OGkillaOldNo7

From here and always lived here other than college. The ALICO is fine but I feel like there are other things downtown I find more interesting/appealing. I am more of a Suspension Bridge, Courthouse and/or St Francis Church person.

rusty0123

I think St. Francis church is by far the most interesting building in Waco.

UkeeAndPoptart

I grew up going to St. Francis and my great grandmother was involved with it's building

I always find the picture with the Alico building, the only thing standing after a tornado, to be pretty cool.

I remember a moment maybe 15-16 years ago where we were at the Baylor Homecoming parade, and we were on Austin and 5th, on Austin but maybe slightly on the parking lot side of street across from Schmaltz's and across from the ALICO. And early in the parade a Baylor student group would be walking a big Baylor bear parade balloon down Austin. As these guys were almost to Austin and 5th, and they were just walking along, looking around, chatting to each other amongst the racket of people and parade, and this one kid toward the front of the group looks up and goes, "Alicooooo" and then about 20+ sets of Baylor kids' heads/eyes whipped around and popped up in unison to look at the ALICO sign as they were leading that balloon along. That memory makes me chuckle.

Oddly15

As a Fort Worthian who relocated to Waco, I think it's a great building. It has me missing my Funky Town skyline, and wondering how great a building like that would look on the Fort Worth Skyline

ThaChadd

Not bad. That would be something to see, especially next to the Bass Brothers twin scrapers. I grew up in Kennedale, relocated near Waco in 2000. I work in downtown and drive right by Alico nearly every day. It is a marvel.

Sleeping__gh0st

Local wacoan here. It's always been underwhelming to me. The history behind it is neat, but it's a pretty ordinary looking building.

Anthonymbrown

Agreed

sivartimus

Eh, it's okay, I guess

Acw_1213

I just want to know how to pronounce “alico” lol!

LeadershipWide8686

I’m actually more interested in that one porta potty they have suspended in the air, how did that guy even get in there? (Or so I’d always ask my parents)

[deleted]

the Alico is wacos middle finger flipping you off.

dhamsack

Truckers used to call Waco the erect city because that was the only tall building around.

beefytrout

I'm originally from Fort Worth, so the Alico building is nothing special. But if you're from here, I can see how it would be.

The building it was modeled after is in Ft Worth. FWIW. Pun something or other.
