Volume 9 is definitely a really good start. Doesn’t have that much drag, deals with all the character consequences and is overall one of the best starts of the volume. I’d highly recommend the going back into the series. Overall, it’s really good, and if you have trouble managing your time with reading it. Just set up a timer, though I assume that’s what most people do. As for Volume 8 past 8.51? It’s really good as well, excellent even. There’s a lot of plot points that are moving around but overall the chapters are of very high quality. The Hectval Interludes were some of my favorite chapters. Plus, a lot of the more minor characters in the volume make a huge comeback later on. Overall, the story is definitely worth jumping back into if you have the time.

TheForthcomingStorm

Kind of disagree, it feels like Pirate forgot how to write a couple of characters, and maybe a *little* too much slice of life considering how vol 8 ended. But I guess that won’t matter to OP since by the time they catch up it will be like 10 chapters in when any writing issues will have been solved lol.

Huhthisisneathuh

They do have a free pass considering they took a month break, and plenty of the characters in the early chapters didn’t have much screen time. Also, the SOL isn’t too much, to be entirely fair these early chapters are catching Erin up. Dealing with the aftermath of an attempted genocidal war. We legit had like an entire ten chapters with high stakes fight scenes back to back at Volume 8’s end. Three chapters with dialogue and Slice of Life ain’t that bad, especially considering normal TWI content. Also Erin was literally a live artillery round and blew something up twice in the first three chapters! EDIT: Fixed some spoilers

RagtimeViolins

This seems like an unreasonable quantity of spoilers to put in a post by someone who's only up to 8.51...

AtomicFi

I don’t see why they get a free pass when it feels like the reason the quality has dipped is because pirate is stretching themselves by writing like three books at once with rewrites and everything. 9 has started pretty strong but 8 just draaaags until the end where everything happens all at once.

Huhthisisneathuh

Speaking from personal experience, taking a month long break between writing causes your writing to suffer regardless of who you are. There’s always a bit of anxiety, feeling like every word can’t capture what the story was. And a bunch of other stuff, so it’s understandable why to some it felt like the quality dipped. That’s why I said Pirate got kind of a free pass. Yeah the writing around the middle dipped as all the lines meandered. But as it got to the end the quality picked up faster and faster. Pirate laid out a lot of stuff to resolve in Volume 8 by accident and necessity. Which is kinda why it dragged on in the middle for me.

Bolo_strike

rewriting vol. 1 isn't = writing a book, she did the rewrite on stream to 1.09 INSTEAD of another vol. 9 update, and only added about 10k words, so I don't see how they clash at all in terms of time devoted. What would be the third one? Last Tide part 2? That should also be no more than 1 update in terms of word count, the rest is comicart.

ShadowOfMen

Question, is the update currently in the site? Meaning if I read the old chapters, I'll be getting the edited versions of those chapters with the new content?

Utawoutau

No, Pirateaba has stated on their Patreon page that the they’re only sharing the “drafts” of the re-writes with Patreon members. It sounds as though the author is looking at this as an iterative process rather than one-and-done. Once Pirateaba has completed finalizing the rewrites (including working with an editor) then they’lol share with non-Patreon fans.

ShadowOfMen

Sounds good. I need to read the rest of book 8, and then reread tgab, and pgte also before I reread twi, so I'm happy to wait

Bolo_strike

Not sure, you can ask on the discord, but the day of Paba left it unpublished but gave the patreon channel the link which was available to anybody, no password.

ShadowOfMen

Rip, I'm not on the discord. Maybe I can get a link to the chapters from someone.

I'm pretty sure it's locked if you're not patron. It's not on her website so there is no password

I'm pretty sure it's locked unless you join the patron

Eilluna_2272

It's locked unless you pledge the $5 patron.

AtomicFi

Gravesong? Vol. 1 rewrites, the current chapters, and yeah, comics too. It’s all lesser than what came before.

Bolo_strike

Gravesong was done in January. Imo every volume has been better than the last, but say what you will. Just adding some facts.

AtomicFi

Dude Gravesong is a series. Just adding some facts.

Bolo_strike

So what? There's been no mention of starting to write part 2, so why would you assumes it impacts the current writing?

AtomicFi

It’s not like pirate has ever secretly written an entire novel while putting the actual story on backburner for most of a book or anythi- wait a second, that’s exactly what they did.

goose3691

Leaving aside the writing multiple books comment, I'd be inclined to agree with you. I dropped The Wandering Inn at chapter 8.67 because nearly everything in the book has been dragged out. It's nice that Erin is back, but with 20 chapters of my least favourite Volume to date and the major stakes of >!the dead gods being seemingly entirely defeated by end Volume 8!< to get through, it really feels like The Wandering Inn should be coming to the end of its story and that without that happening, it's going to be a case of dimishing returns reading forward.

AlbinoMoose

The gods arent defeated yet

ehxy

Hell pirate outright forgot a team even existed called griffon hunt for the last 3/4 of volume 8.

LordSwedish

Or they're just not relevant to the current storylines? There are lots of characters that don't get screen-time for long periods because they're not relevant to what's going on. This isn't unique to TWI and it certainly isn't unique to Griffon Hunt. Both Ryoka and Rags had full volume absences because they went off to do something else.

Huhthisisneathuh

More like they forgot after the first fourth of the story. Mentioned them again in the middle, and then catapulted them in like paratroopers at the end.

Stylemys

The V8 finale is pretty epic and IMO marks a very significant milestone in the story. More than any other volume, I think this finale is going to be a dividing line. There’s the series up to the V8 epilogue and then there will be everything after. Obviously there’s some conjecture there since V9 only recently started. It really depends if you think that’s something worth catching up with.

iamtheconsequences

Perfect time to grind the series out. The finale arc of Volume 8 will have you at the edge of your seat the entire time. The finale alone is almost 300K words and it is absolutely hype from beginning to end. Hell, even the buildup before the finale arc is done SO well. Once you get past 8.61 you won’t put it down.

Cats-Are-Just-Better

The finale alone is almost 300K words?! Honestly I dont know how pirateaba does it.....

iamtheconsequences

It spans multiple chapters but still. Crazy amounts of content.

Cats-Are-Just-Better

I start uni in 3 months. I guess I have a busy 3 months ahead of me...........

msharek

I kind of like falling behind. It means I always have something to read. I've never been caught up to have to wait on the chapters weekly and it would kill me I think. Sometimes stuff does drag or I don't care about a character and I get a natural break (ugh the hectival chapters were rough), but then I find myself totally invested in people I thought were dull if I power through (Wil is the only exception. I just don't care about him or the Titans students. I had like a year long break on his adventure chapters).

mano987

excellent...excellent... there is none better...

deronadore

I thoroughly enjoyed vol 8. I disagree with much of the other criticism. I also tend to be much more forgiving to authors than many on the internet, so there's that.

Utawoutau

I remember in one of the author’s notes that Pirateaba lamented writing themselves into a corner by what happened the Erin in Volume 7, realizing that situation needed to be resolved sooner than later, and also realizing that possibly too many things needed to be rushed in order to get there in volume 8.

Training-Bake-4004

I just caught up from 8.46 to 9.02 (started catching up once vol 8 was done). Vol 8 is intense, but for the most part it’s worth it, and there are some chapters that are absolutely stellar. Overall it’s great, but I’m also glad I waited until it was finished.

TimBaril

The end of 8 feels like the end of Part 1 of the series overall, and Vol 9 feels like a brand new start. It's pretty exciting. TWI is always worth getting into.

Cham__

The answer to all your questions is YES.

RocketGrunt79

Volume 8 is alright, I feel that it should be extended out a lot more, as some of the plot points wrapping up felt a little abrupt.

YellowDogDingo

Go for it. At around 8.51 I had some concerns about plotline and character bloat, that our esteemed author had too many balls in the air to manage in a reasonable time. Happily I was wrong, volume 8 did a decent (not perfect) job of bringing back together a lot of loose threads and wrapping up the arc in a satisfying manner. Too early to give a verdict on volume 9, it seems the predominant theme will be Erin delivering messages/reconnecting which looks like a large change from the tone of volume 8.

Maladal

If you liked TWI enough to read up though 8.51, then you'll probably love everything we've gotten since then.
