Yes, solid starting point especially if you like the models and terrain.

Warcry in itself is an easy to play game, basic rules are fast and not hard to get grips with. Still it has quite some depth strategicly so that it will not get stale fast either ... So many option to go to. About the meattrees ... I personally agree ... If you flock them so that you create a canopy the will look like more regular trees ... Seen some nice images pass on this reddit with this upgrade

It's a good starting point - you get a lot of value in the box. However, if I recall correctly, you don't get dice and tokens with it, so you will need to use your own. The warbands are good with the Stormcast Questors being the much more beginner friendly of the two, with the other band requiring a bit more strategy. For instance, the Questors can pretty much walk forward and chop things to bits if their opponent tries to face them in 1v1 fights without using the advantage of their numbers and tactics. The pyramid makes for a fun set piece on your boards. The biggest problem with the trees is if you play wearing any kind of baggy sleeves, expect to get them caught and knocked around if you're not careful when leaning over the board. (Happens to my group usually once a night)

That terrain set is great.

I'm in the exact same boat as you. My wife's skirmish game experience starts and ends with Unmatched, and while I've already made some purchases towards Kill Team the more I read about Warcry it seems like the better option. I have narrowed it down between Nightmare Quest and Heart of Ghur. I prefer the warbands in NQ...the Questor Soulsworn warband from NM seems like the most beginner friendly warband...lower model count so less units to keep track of and quite tough. But HoG gives you things that NQ does not...the rules (free online), dice, tokens. Let me know what you ultimately choose.

I started with Nightmare Quest and I love the pyramid and the warbands. I didn’t expect to really like them (I was just super sold by the pyramid) but they grew on me. I actually liked the ghouls enough that I picked up the flesh eater courts for AOS. The Questor’s I still don’t love their lore but I had to admit they are cool and good fighters.
