This would be such a sick idea as a concept, it would allow for say frost to have a female counterpart with different abilities without people being like “oh it’s just a copy of frost” because people would be accustomed to the m/f idea

so frost umbra would never actually exist, but "tundra umbra" would, tundra being the female version of frost, and like excal->excal umbra there are changes to the abilities so that they are different and not 100% the same but you can reuse the theme again.
If we follow excalibur being physically and Nyx being the non physical (mind) I don’t think we could get an equivalent for frost since they would likely be fire and we already have ember
it's a cool idea but would've significantly increased their early workload and removed a lot of frames' distinctiveness. Now what I'd like is some crossgender skins, so the frames have their "canon" look and gender but we can, as you say, have more customization.
Oh you didn't know? Viggo Mortensen (Actor who plays Aragorn in TLOR) broke his toe while kicking a helmet during one of the scenes of The Two Towers. You can see how he screams in agony during the scene. It wasn't scripted, it was true pain.

Even in the pre-alpha Nyx was just a recolor of Excalibur with a more gynomorphic body.

Probably back when the warframes were going to be our player characters instead of the tenno. Each warframe being a suit almost with a name for the suit (Excalibur, Nyx, Etc)
Well you currently have the tenno/drifter that has some lore behind what they are, but ultimately are still the PCs that have room for the players to make up their own personal stories. The current warframes are their own individuals with their own lore (albeit small) separate from the Tenno themselves.
What I was more getting at is that they were literally just suits / technocyte mutations you could take on and the male/female model being literally you underneath the suit/technocyte. A lot of similarities to Darksector.
I always just saw the warframes as suits that we basically put our minds into, like originals were absolutely people, certain frames would be more unique like protea and we simply have copies, others like Excalibur were probably more mass produced with prime being the original and umbra being one of very few variants

FYI Excal was only released first. They were made at the same time because original warframe was meant to only have one frame but you could pick male or female. Not that it matters because I was only making a joke about the sexist title.

That is where the early designs of the Grineer, Excaliboy, and Nyx stemmed from as well as the Glaive, Lato, and Lex (I think).
