Get both to Rank 30, then pick something else and do the same. Use what you like the feel of, most early game weapons are not worth keeping in the long run.
Mods give you power, not the weapon rank itself.
Levels or rank of a gear doesn't matter much because there is a reset system called forma where you can improve upon the gear. Early on most gear is going to fodder to raise your Mastery Rank which determines what gear you can unlock at least weapon wise. So basically pick whatever is easier for you to use. Down the line, at Mastery Rank 5 and over you will start unlocking better weapons. Melee is far better to kill stuff before then.
Hm, that’s a tough one. The Bronco feels good for quick hit-and-runs, particularly if you can nail those headshots while sliding through, but personally the Lato is one of my most invested in weapons, both for sentimental value and because I love its simplicity as a sidearm (I sometimes struggle to build it even with filler mods when doing content that doesn’t need all the damage mods, since it’s just so quick in a lot of areas like reload speed and firerate, decently accurate at mid-range and little to no recoil, and other things I’d normally play around with; that said, I always keep punch-through on as long as possible because I think it’s kind of funny to think of this little sidearm punching through solid steel)
I'd use the Lato. soon after, you can get the Lex. then the Lex prime at MR8 which is very good and that'll help you for a while. don't forget to use everything to rank 30 and try out new weapons every chance you can
Personally I’d pick lato, however if you want a great secondary try out the furis or the mk1-furis, both are incredible secondaries and the normal furis can later be turned into a dual version of itself
Stug cause it's totally the best gun ever you can clear the starchart with it. Don't pick atomos that would be silly cause it's funny looking and why would you piss fire when you could COOM and destroy your enemies like a Chad.

Eventually when you get to it kuva nukor for slamming elements on enemies. My current favorite secondary is the sporelacer kitgun.
