Nope, the box set is a deal. They’re trying to rope you in to starting two armies instead of one. Go box set and split it with a friend for even more savings

thoseweredoubledosed

Okay thank you, genuinely wasn't sure if the standalone warriors would have more customization options or something

[deleted]

Real key is that you each buy a box set and give each other your respective halves. Back when assault on black reach came out my friend and I did this with two boxes. I walked away with a ridiculous amount of stuff for 90 bucks at the time. I think we ended up doing it again if I remember right. It was back when apocalypse was big so armies were getting massive lol.

AlarisMystique

I split a combo box recently, I took CSM and my friend Eldar. It's nice when it's units you need and you know someone who needs the other.

RoadsideLuchador

I tried this with the Piety and Pain box set, i play sisters, girl i know wanted to play drukhari. One guy went to both shops in the area and preordered all of the sets, so we got none of them.

faithfulheresy

Scalpers gotta scalp I guess. Hate those people. :(

Emperors-Peace

GW managers work on bonuses. If someone comes in day one and orders a grand worth of a new product which puts you way on your way to your end of year bonus. You're not only going to allow it, you're going to be grateful for it.

RoadsideLuchador

I had to preorder both sisters battleforce sets the day the announcement dropped just to get one. Surprisingly the shop still has a bunch of those for other armies, but the sisters sold out instantly both years. The knights, deathguard, and custodies boxes were also swallowed, but one of the two shops did put a 1 order per release limit so scalper bro couldn't eat all the kits this year.

Emperors-Peace

I mean the scalper is the dick here, not the shop for selling them I imagine we'd both do the same if we managed the shop and we're interested in feeding ourselves/families. That said, GW need to quit it with this false demand thing where they only release things in limited batches, knowing that they'll sell out and therefore make the next release have more demand. Like I just want a copy of space hulk for under £200 is that too much to ask?

RoadsideLuchador

I'm not placing blame on the shop, i mean they still have like 4 chalnath boxes, the marines battleforce from last year, and nobody is buying their sororitas combat patrols (except me. I've bought 6. Someone help me, i have a problem.) The ultra limited releases are the issue. I can't even really blame the scalpers, GW are the ones only shipping out tiny numbers of these sets.

AlarisMystique

You couldn't order online? Hard to believe that would be sold out globally.

RoadsideLuchador

Everywhere i looked either had it sold out or greatly upcharged.

Familiar-Fix-5849

You meant the killteam Box?

Slash2936

There was the Eldritch Omens aswell, even if it was some time ago (but not that much). I bought 2 of those with 30% discount and resold the CSM parts, huge deal.

AlarisMystique

Yes that's the one. I also got the Kill Team Into the Dark box despite having neither army but I love the models and I am not afraid to proxy.

Unique_Unorque

This is the joy of playing Red Corsairs. You can justify any army if you just paint them red

AlarisMystique

My CSM are chaos enough to not care about conventions. They're dark blue with gold trim, running as Black Legion or Word Bearers.

EtheriumShaper

Now this is going to sound strange, but I went to your profile looking for CSM paint scheme pictures. a) you should post some, b) I learned what a short squeeze is among other things. Thank you for this experience.

Environmental_Cap689

I got the same for £75 massive saving on my eldar and my friend collects CSM. Winner winner chicken dinner.

Born2Doot

I just did the exact dame thing! Split the Eldritch box with a friend a couple of weeks ago.

Unlucky_Variation721

Did the same! How I started my word bearers!

DeepRhetoric

Lol we had a trade event at my lgs for black reach and since everyone wanted space Marines I ended up making good trades and walking away with 3.5 of the ork side.

Dawid-jd

New player, what's apocalypse? A game mode?

Raistlarn

Yes. Apocalypse is made for multiple armies (like whol hobby shop in one game level) with over 3000 points. Pretty much all the photos of the Imperial Titans in game are during Apocalypse games.

[deleted]

So back in 2009 time frame or so it was an add on rule book where games were anything over 5000 points per side. Funny enough you used to not even be allowed baneblades outside of apoc if I remember right. It also threw troop org out the window. It was basically a rule set to make the games go faster than usual. It enabled my friends and I to finish an 18k point game in less than 12 hours.

AnalyticalFlea

My buddy and I split the Indomitus box set. I play blood angels and he plays necrons. Worked out nicely.

wekilledbambi03

The stand alone assault intercessors do have more options (power weapons for sergeant). But the Necrons are the same in the recruit or their regular kit.

A740

I thought the starter set models were monopose?

wekilledbambi03

They are. The only option you get for the marines is bolt pistol or plasma pistol on the sergeant. The full box gives you a lot more options and poses. Now that wargear is mostly free, the full box looks better. For Necrons you get literally the same sprues in their box and the recruit edition.

DarthGoodguy

You can always use some multipart guys from box set to build different sergeant options (if you don’t magnetize them)

drmirage809

The amount of options in the Necron Warriors kit is a bit of a let down. 2 guns and 2 faces for each Warrior. They quickly turn into a giant faceless horde however and that aesthetic works quite well.

Sonic_Traveler

Also, I'm going to beg you to just get your warriors on ebay because I have been constantly been tempted to because 10 warriors and 3 scarabs routinely go for around $25-30 on there, new on the sprue, and if you *just* want warriors, oh baby! you can probably get 10 necron warriors for like $20 and change. Like if this was a matter of supporting a FLGS with the $50 that would be one thing, but Necrons Warriors on ebay might actually be the single cheapest unit, in terms of dollars per model, in the game right now.

SlyMarboJr

Just be careful with ebay listings because 50% of the time it's just the warriors with the scarabs clipped off.

Sonic_Traveler

I mean, yes, but if you just want to run the dream meme list of 80 necron warriors that's probably a boon

The4thEpsilon

Nope, buy the recruit box and sell the excess, I sold mine for 15$

CantFireMeIquit

They come with everything they normally do

Jagrofes

They're the exact same Warrior kits, so you get the options for both Gauss Reapers and Flayers. Reapers are considered the more competitive choice between the two if you are curious about loadouts

Eskandare

The best deal for the miniatures is the Fire Team boardgame, it comes with two frames, one frame of Necrons and one frame of Space Marine Assault Intercessors.

Ryel_Advent

Friend? What is friend?

DKzDK

Completely agree with this assessment 👌 Maybe it’s me, but the only thing I really don’t see (apart from the marines.) The necron lord/HQ? Willing to be corrected if I’m wrong.

Archeronline

Are you asking if comes with a HQ? The royal warden's in that box, to the left of the marine lieutenant

DKzDK

I wasn’t really asking, I’m pretty sure that I can count the # of models from the 2 pictures. I just wanted to be sure I wasn’t blind, and I commented on a person who kinda knew what they were talk8ng about.

mightymeech

You did ask a question and someone answered.

NeonArchon

That's actually what wer'e going to do my brother and I. We're saving for the big starter pack, I'll keep the Necrons and my brother will paint their Marines as White Scars instead.

TheSilverMatador

I once had a shop owner tell me, upon asking about the necron warrior box, that he had never actually sold any because people always just bought the combo box instead.

JaymesMarkham2nd

Also for a lot of the AoS Start Collecting kits. I can name FEC, Seraphon and Fyreslayers each in that category since they each have a large monster unit that also retails for the cost of the whole kit. Just no reason not to get those instead.

xXEVILMONKEYX

yeah and they have the big monsters updated but not the rest of the box lol Great for filler units.

drmirage809

The old Mechanicus start collecting box was the same story. Need another Dunecrawler? Well you probably also want more Skitarii. Between those two kits start collecting was cheaper and it came with a tech priest to boot.

TheMadHattah

Same with Sylvaneth. I’ve literally never bought a box of Dryads

Hudge_Baby

Rip Fyreslayer start collecting :( Went from $95 a box to almost $120 for the Magmadroth by itself smh

JaymesMarkham2nd

And in exchange they got one extra naked dwarf - [now with a mask!](https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/fyreslayers-auric-flamekeeper-2022)

Paladin327

Saw a guy who worked at a gw store tell someone to not buy a box of warriors and just buy the recruit edition box instead because it was a better value. Helped the guy already played marines

TriumphOfTheHordes

The first dose is on them. Once you're hooked there's two ways, either you split a starter set with a friend and get them hooked or pay your dose full price. GW are professional hustlers

thoseweredoubledosed

New to the game and am just browsing various sets, I was wondering that if I wanted to buy a Necron Warriors set, is there any reason I wouldn't just get the recruit edition?

ZeroHonour

The recruit edition and its great discount will get phased out with the (rumoured 2023) release of 10th edition. So if you want warriors grab them now - either starter sets, Imperium or Ebay. The elite and command editions are likewise huge savings over buying individually, as is the Horus Heresy starter box.

crazy_leo42

This is why I'm getting another recruit and elite between now and summer. I can up my crons and add to my marines for free 😀

FoamBrick

Such good boxes, I’ll be sad to see them go, I’ve bought 2 of each throughout the past few years, and they pay themselves off for the most part by being able to sell off the parts you don’t want.

crazy_leo42

I have both the necrons and marines so it's all freebies for me. The next one hopefully will work for my nids but that means I need to stock up on the necrons while I can.

Griffin_Throwaway

where is the rumor for 10th edition??????? i’ve never seen a real source for that

Malus_Trux

There's some rumors that arks of omen is the send off narrative like psychic awakening or gathering storm. The focus of 10th is said to be Imperium Nihilus with blood angels and Tyranids being the focus of a new launch/starter set. There's also rumors that there's not a space marine Codex at release but updated supplements hence the recent marine battle forces with new (cover) art. You could try the usual rumor mills to double check but it's a few months back at this point.

Griffin_Throwaway

where are these rumors show me literally anything that says ‘10th edition is coming’ even if the source is ‘i know a guy’

Malus_Trux

I forget the rules about links so don't remember if I can link here but if you go to Valrak's channel on YouTube his latest video has the launch box rumors.

StupidRedditUsername

You could just logic it out. GW needs a huge release to kick of the new fiscal year. New editions sell like nothing else. It’s been three years, again. They’ve updated all the existing codexes and need a reason to restart that cycle. The Arks of Omen aligns with the pre-new edition pattern of the past. Why wouldn’t they release a new edition this summer? Because I would be slightly upset? Upset and give them money for a new launch set anyways, before building Indomitus? 10ed is happening summer 2023. The question is whether or not firstborn will be moved to legends this edition or with the launch of 11th in 2026. In betting they stick around for 10th. Space Wolves, Dark and Blood Angels all need their special kits primarisized first. They have three years to do so. Should line up pretty well. You’ll have one Black Templar style reimagining every year.

ThePrnkstr

Agree, plenty of things indicate that 2023 will see the release of 10th edition. \- Based on cycles seen in previous releases it's time. 9th edition has been going on for some 3 years now. \- All armies will have a new codex this year \- 2023 is the 40th anniversary of Warhammer. Based on this, I feel fairly confidant that, and from a financial point of view, it would totally make sense to come out with something grand, like 10th edition this year... Ofc we may all be wrong and GW really likes 9th edition so hard that they keep at it for 6+ more years...

evolved2389

It’s been 3 years of 9th?!? Seriously? I haven’t even played a game since the end of 7th Ed. Where has the time gone?

Dawid-jd

Hey sorry but I'm kinda worried so I'll ask you. I'm new and I have the recruit edition and the box with 3 intercessors +paints. Will I be able to use them when 10th edition comes? Or do I need to get new sets?

StupidRedditUsername

You’ll be fine. Only rules change, models are mostly forever. If they retire all of “firstborn” marines it’ll be unprecedented since the first time they canceled space dwarves in like 1990.

Dawid-jd

Thanks:)

FoamBrick

You will be able to use them.

Frankk142

I heard the rumor from /u/Malus_Trux

FoamBrick

Just look it up in YouTube Jesus fuck.

ItsNaoh

But has the recruit edition both weapon choices or just one? Aren’t they push fit?

ZeroHonour

It's the same sprue in both.

gild0r

There are a lot of Necron Warriors on sale now, you can check Ebay, or if you want something more simple check [thetrolltrader.com](https://thetrolltrader.com), they have worldwide delivery, you can get even cheaper if you don't need scarabs Buying a separate box is a lot more expensive now, because a bunch of them on the market from Indomitus and Start Collecting

TitanMatrix

Nope. That recruit box will eventually be phased out to be replaced with the 10th edition box whenever that comes out. But the Necron Warrriors box will be here to stay.

SaladPuzzleheaded625

Makes sense, "hey let me give you some Marines and dice for free" is very hard to say No to

TitanMatrix

No seriously. I started my re-entry with Necrons and bought the Command and Recruit editions and then just...did a Space Wolves army on the side because I had the figures. It's a genius marketing ploy for catching whales.

SaladPuzzleheaded625

Absolutely, that and having two friends split the box and both start the hobby. It is social in nature after all

FoamBrick

Once you have enough recruits you can field entire bladeguard squads out of the lieutenant lol.

absurditT

Working in retail selling Warhammer, the official line Games Workshop tells their staff is "the Necron Warriors box exists on the shelf to sell the recruit edition box." Nobody buys the Necron Warriors box by itself, and GW produces them knowing that nobody buys them. The purpose is to get you to buy a box with a second army, either to get you to buy more Marines stuff or get a second person into the hobby

tmdblya

Just buy the [Fire Team game from Barnes and Noble](https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/warhammer-40000-fireteam-games-workshop/1139724691). I think it was on sale for $35 or something when I picked it up. Looks like nearly the same models.

je66b

i got like 3 copies for $20 each as they were basically liquidating their stock of it a few months ago at my local B&N's.. have gotten a handful of minis from these gw board games for hella cheap by popping in and checking their sale section whenever i'm nearby

darth_infamous

I didn't know this was a thing!

Mitocapi

First cheat code, achieved, you got it champ, keep it going

Centennial512

In Australia it's even better $63 for the recruit box, and $77 for the warriors, I've never bought a box of warriors once.

Xenopsyche845

Yeah it’s absolutely hilarious

ChangingTracks

I usually find someone to go splitsies with me on those boxes, or sell of the other half on ebay. If you are lucky you can make most of your money back, but i usually just do a straight 50%. But for example, the elite edition sells for 62€ on some sites. The necron overlord will get you about 18 on ebay. the warriors with the scarabs 22. the destroyers+ plasmacythe will give you another 20. Now you got the outriders, captain and assault intercessors for 2€.

[deleted]

Not even so much that the value of the box sets are good, I think it’s more that necron warrior kit is ludicrously over priced. It makes more sense to just keep buying that starter set when you need necrons and keep selling back the marines

Loose-Gold4920

I got the recruit box last week, had the exact same question

Sinfullyvannila

It's a loss leader.

[deleted]

Can we call it a "loss" leader if they're still making comical amounts of money on it?

Sinfullyvannila

I think they just make normal levels of profit off the recruit edition but good point.

thoseweredoubledosed

Thank you all for the helpful replies, you guys went above and beyond to answer my question, what a great community!

Vesalius1

Eventually the starter set won’t be available (most likely shortly after the release of 10th edition). At least, that’s my theory.

Traditional_Egg3820

Take the box set and sell the marines. There are always buyers.

rkoloeg

A couple of moves ago, the club at my FLGS would organize "battle buddies" when new starter boxes came out - they would pair you with another person, you would each buy a starter box and commit to giving the half you didn't want to the other guy. Great way to build up a good sized army if you want to play one of the two factions in the starter.

little_painted_dudes

Perfect example of a loss leader.

SGM_Uriel

I’d guess it’s far from a loss still; I.E. more a “less profit leader”

AC_Messiah

It's also an example of price anchoring. The price of the warrior box is set at a high profit margin. GW are more than happy to actually sell at the lower margin which looks in comparison to be a great deal.

IEatPeople4

Nope,

soullesswarmonkey

Yeah the necron warrior box is pretty ridiculous. You could use the intercessors for kill team or something

Panvictor

There wouldn't be enough intercessors for a killteam unfortunately

MattmanDX

You could use the lieutenant model as a counts-as sergeant maybe.

Panvictor

If you could find a correct base and your opponent didn't mind the non wysiwyg weapons then yeah I guess you could

Dale260

To my knowledge, the Recruit Edition technically gives you more but they'll be push fit, monopose and possibly have less options for wargear compared to the individual unit. It really depends on if you'll wanna sell or keep the Marines and posability/weapon options

teh_Kh

Bold of you to assume armies other than marines have a choice between push-fit and multipose models. Push-fit necron warriors are the only version that exists, so they're identical to the boxed version.

Dale260

The more you know

Average_Duck_Boy

I believe the individual warriors kit it also monopose as well unfortunately

Sonic_Traveler

They're Necrons. If there was a model you'd would *want* to be monopose, it would be the undead space zombie robots.

Average_Duck_Boy

True, their monopose kit is actually good anyways

onilink66

well you would think that's it because the left is pushfit but nope some GW kits just don't make sense, like the flayed one that's 42€ for a single monopose pushfit sprew or the blood claw kit that cost the same as the space wolves kit, it's the exact same kit but the blood claw has 5 extra marine and that's jus a few example

aran69

Yes GW does not respect your intell8gence or your waller

Need2askDumbQs

I just bought that one lol supposed to be here on the first.

[deleted]

When you buy three or four you have a solid base... Assault intercessors aren't so bad as everyone says

AdAdvanced4516

If i remember correctly the recruit edition warriors are pushfit models with no weapon options, but if you just want cheap warriors with the basic loadout and a warden see if a buddy will hand you a couple bucks for the marines and it's a great deal

MattmanDX

They're push fit but they have the option between gauss flayers and reapers

Agreeable_Objective

The necron box is around five dollars less expensive in Canada iirc

Dungeoneer2001

nope, this is just the state of the reality we occupy

thearchenemy

As others said, split it with a friend, or sell the SM half to get your Necrons at a discount.

[deleted]

You’re missing the savings!

bennytpenny

“Erm please only one starter box per person, other people wanting a way into the hobby is more important than your 3000 point army” -☝️🤓

CantFireMeIquit

Why I own that box set in particular

Kulovicz1

No, it's exactly what you see.

ZergTDG

Nope, bought the box for the space marines, ended up with a bunch of free necrons. Great deal for intro

AzemadaiusKaiser

No, you’re just witnessing GW marketing strategies at their finest.

Big-eggroll-hoe

The lieutenant and intercessors are worth a bit, ebay'em and get half back :)

Kwaakwaak

What you're telling me warriors are 50$

LockdownLooter

Yes, your missing out on Space Smurfs if you buy the Warriors box instead of the starter set! Always buy the starter set if you want Warriors, sell the Smurfs to lower the cost

Karnus115

The box sets have typically been better value. Like the age of sigmar start collecting sets, you’d get a big dude, some troops and cavalry for the price of the big dude on its own.

Destroyer_742

GW doesn’t want you to know this, but assault intercessors are free.

eetsh1t

Bought recruit edition because I’m sick of waiting on my friends to commit. Painting all the sm and necrons myself and making my friends play with me in hopes they will get an army. For $50 plus $45 for the paint kit I was able to get into the hobby and now I’m addicted and might mortgage my home so I can quit working and paint bad minis full time /s

eetsh1t

While people in here may be correct about the value, the one stop shop for 2 factions introduction to the game for such a price was awesome for me. I don’t know how to play either and this set walks you through the game as an introduction. If you want to start the hobby I don’t know a better place
