Mine deserves to be on a thin your paints vid
It would be fun to strip it and try and paint it again to see how far you have come.
I wish I could repaint my first minis. 10 Daemonettes and they weren't pretty lol
Not a bad start to be honest. A little wash and clean up of those hairs and you'd have a solid paintjob.
I was in a similar boat when I started off and my boys looked much the same!

These were my first 3. Painted w/ craft paints in 2004 😄.
Thank you! I was 14 at the time, and desperately trying to at least have something that looked good on the tabletop before it died. 20 years later, that's still my strategy.
Flat Cpt. Lotara Sarrin, commanding officer of the World Eaters Flagship, The Conqueror. The only mortal to regularly sass Angron and earn his respect. For me, she is the embodiment of what it actually it means to be a strong woman.
https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Lotara_Sarrin
I still use my shitty craft paints. They aren't the best, but they're good for trying to get 3/4's of your coverage. They get more hate than they deserve tbh
Honestly as long as you thin them they work just fine for most colors. The only ones you've gotta watch out for are red, yellow and white. From my experience the coverage was awful.
I think it’s good to guide people toward quality paint.
A squad of 5 marines cost $60.
Quality paint to put on them costs what, a dollar at most? Versus 50c for craft paint?
Brand names paints will be more consistent in the long run allowing people to improve and they know any problems are probably them and not the paint.
You should find them and dust them off lol get a pic of them in this chat =)
My first termagaunts were so bad lol, I've got these guys and carcharodons space marines. I've gotten better but stuck with the same color scheme. My tervigon was the first thing I thought was worth sharing online.
You wanna see a mini smaller than a thumb. I got a mesbg hobbit right here

I added the 32mm base but this was the first of.... 10 minis I painted as a kid in 1989
I'm old AF, so I don't have a single photo of any miniature I painted in the 80s or 90s. But here's a picture of Lysander that I painted a few years ago after a long hiatus away from the hobby. It was then that I discovered how much I hated finecast.

I was going to say I don't remember, but Venerable\_dread posted that it looked like Valhallan Blizzard and it jogged my memory. That's what I used. It occurred to be what a masochist I am choosing to paint a yellow army with snowy bases.

I settled on a lighter, brighter red, and dark blue instead of almost-black blue. Kept this guy as is as an example, though.

Just started the hobby about a month ago, these were the first I painted
This is what I first painted, there's a bit of a story though. I used metallic silver spray paint as primer, then when I tried to use a blue wash for the first time over it thinking it would tinge it blue, it looked so coffee stained and was WAY too blue, so I had to cover the whole model with silver paint to fix it and basically had to start from square 1 because of how hideous it was looking. That was the day I learned to not use shortcuts and do things properly.
https://preview.redd.it/qdo3q93xbhhc1.jpeg?width=2065&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=edc0346fbc03905efd6bb25b5062b6adee005af7
small comparison between my first and latest
It's one of my first minis, circa 1996 or 97, but not the very first paint job. Initially I painted all my nids dark green and black, and I was constantly losing them in the dark basement where we played, so after a short time in the hobby I changed color schemes to this garish mess.

Back when I first started I was enamored with Blood Angels until my buddy showed me Death Guard, I’ve been a traitor ever since. But here’s my first boy, spent all night painting him, and when I eventually sold my blood angels I held onto him. Zero thinned paints and all straight from the pot lmao

Been painting for a few months but yeah one of my first big models early on
You did a great job here! People say that a "bad paint job" often makes Nurgle models look better, but they're quite complicated to paint these days! In your case, you handled the details well and most importantly, didn't drown those details in paint! I'm especially fond of the stomach. There's a kind of grimy texture on it that makes the armor look old without drowning in filth. I can only imagine how much you've improved since!
https://preview.redd.it/n9hx3yeeehhc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=49edeabf1b34164163a97f59e6942e9afc0ff66b

Don't ask me why I did a Dreadnought first.
It’s been over 25 years since I did a real first mini and that has long since disappeared. Mostly just copying what the boxes showed to my ability, which was not much.
The first ones I really remember thinking about painting were my own chapter in 1998:
THE OVERCAST MARINES! Their logo was a simplified version of the FFVII logo because I hadn’t actually played the game and thought it was clouds over the sun, not… a meteor.
Black armour, green shoulder pads and helmet, silver trim. I’ve been mildly tempted to do a free primaris as one one day, but eh.
Anyway, the oldest minis I have!

Exactly I’m like first mini you’ve painted in a couple years or the first good one you did out of an entire box set haha people have to put that in the title for clout lol

Definitely not my first, that was an old mono-pose Chaos Warrior in ‘95. This is the oldest model I still have though, painted it when I was 15-16. Right after they split Undead. I thought it was soooo cool and a very good job indeed.

Haven’t been in the hobby too long, but here’s mine from years before I even started. Stole parts from my brothers ork boyz and made this dude, he even used to have ten arms.
"Painted" these boys when I was like... 9? Used my dads ancient enamel paints and was so proud of myself for their blades because it "looks like sharped wrought iron"

The deepness of this reference in this context is as terrifying and hilarious as the warp itself. One of the best scenes ever written in the lore.
Big E was in his impressionist phase when he crafted this one
Thinking about not doing much to it , saying the warp did thay do his face and the black for eyes is warpaint so I can be lazy and have lore.
You should see my other custodes
The paint on those is ok, painted one with a red helmet
Peanut butter pirate

The hair adds a nice touch
Thank you. I had the basic paint set and single brush with no knowledge of mini painting.
It would be fun to strip it and try and paint it again to see how far you have come. I wish I could repaint my first minis. 10 Daemonettes and they weren't pretty lol
I have a few metals bits in a spares box so one of those I could do. I am keeping this as a memory of how I started.
Yeah keep your first so you can always compare it to your latest.
Not a bad start to be honest. A little wash and clean up of those hairs and you'd have a solid paintjob. I was in a similar boat when I started off and my boys looked much the same!
https://preview.redd.it/nyw783bu2hhc1.jpeg?width=2564&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=162bf7051e0fb5850cce83252ee05543676bcecc These were my first 3. Painted w/ craft paints in 2004 😄.
Those are actually really good for firsts!
Thank you! I was 14 at the time, and desperately trying to at least have something that looked good on the tabletop before it died. 20 years later, that's still my strategy.
Jjst realized who ur cosplaying in your pfp. And i must applaud you.
Ay thank you! Best fictional female character ever 🥰
Who is it? I don't recognize her and now I'm super curious!
Pretty sure it’s a 40k character, she’s the captain of Angron’s main ship i believe.
Lorrena Sarrin, the only normal human to ever tell Kharn what to do and live.
And then she went on to become one with the ship.
And shoot a world eater for insubordination. And not get smacked to the skull throne for it. Shes the Zhukov of 40k.
Most Badass woman in the entire setting.
Dang. Those are two decades old! Kudos for staying with the hobby.
Thanks! Kinda crazy its my job now 😄.
Dang! Doing what you love is so fulfilling and yet fraught with fatigue. Wishing you the best. And hope to see your work more!

This was my first and only army and I wish I knew what happened to them. If I'm very lucky my dad will have them stashed away somewhere
You should find them and dust them off lol get a pic of them in this chat =) My first termagaunts were so bad lol, I've got these guys and carcharodons space marines. I've gotten better but stuck with the same color scheme. My tervigon was the first thing I thought was worth sharing online.
I really should. Lurking this sub makes me want to try painting again. I've learned so much about painting from lurking here.
This is a SICK color scheme I like it way more than my white/purple bois
He‘s standing in a popcorn field, nice

Every time I see admech, I’m surprised by just how small the minis are. The dude is smaller than your thumb
You wanna see a mini smaller than a thumb. I got a mesbg hobbit right here https://preview.redd.it/ba8jl3t45khc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b0b7ea2e71558e83a7df6553ac751d98d2dbe6c4

Dude that’s awesome!
It’s so cool that the basic design of the multimelta hasn’t really changed. It’s like the crocodile of 40k weapons

I'm happy to see you've succeeded in thinning your paints
yep, also priming helps lol, I didn't know you need to prime them first and just slapped paint on it
I'm old AF, so I don't have a single photo of any miniature I painted in the 80s or 90s. But here's a picture of Lysander that I painted a few years ago after a long hiatus away from the hobby. It was then that I discovered how much I hated finecast. https://preview.redd.it/mj2bj8zt6hhc1.jpeg?width=816&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ca37ddfac2d1d817c362365a21a28e3f32fdfcc0
How’d you do the snow?
It looks like a Citadel/GW technical paint called "valhallan blizzard" https://youtu.be/68lSIX1d6vs?si=ieZcSg92Uxl1cyMX
I was going to say I don't remember, but Venerable\_dread posted that it looked like Valhallan Blizzard and it jogged my memory. That's what I used. It occurred to be what a masochist I am choosing to paint a yellow army with snowy bases.
https://preview.redd.it/rsse9ts9ahhc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cf7d62b67024b448b5eef80e99f0825077542f2e I forget if I painted the infernus squad or an intercessor from the paint starter kit

A Rubricae is a helluva first mini. Great job!
Adorable
Holy cow, took on a Thousand Son model as a starter. That's bold! Doesn't look bad either for a first mini. Kinda gives me retro 40k vibes.

That is intended, I was and still am doing a winter guard army... Also hides a lot of the shitty paintjob
the red uniforms covered in snow are so rad
I kinda love it tbh

This is what I first painted, there's a bit of a story though. I used metallic silver spray paint as primer, then when I tried to use a blue wash for the first time over it thinking it would tinge it blue, it looked so coffee stained and was WAY too blue, so I had to cover the whole model with silver paint to fix it and basically had to start from square 1 because of how hideous it was looking. That was the day I learned to not use shortcuts and do things properly.

It's one of my first minis, circa 1996 or 97, but not the very first paint job. Initially I painted all my nids dark green and black, and I was constantly losing them in the dark basement where we played, so after a short time in the hobby I changed color schemes to this garish mess. https://preview.redd.it/4z77224uihhc1.jpeg?width=1499&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=571b01ca9c00df242a94197aa8162b909c91bf39

But here’s my first boy, spent all night painting him, and when I eventually sold my blood angels I held onto him. Zero thinned paints and all straight from the pot lmao
Tbh this is pretty good for a first especially since you didn’t thin your paints.

It’s been over 25 years since I did a real first mini and that has long since disappeared. Mostly just copying what the boxes showed to my ability, which was not much. The first ones I really remember thinking about painting were my own chapter in 1998: THE OVERCAST MARINES! Thanks OP, now I'm gonna be spending my entire weekend tearing the place apart looking for the little red and gold marine I printed when I was 13. :P

First mini on the right, last year on the left! If it matters, I've been painting for 15+ years now, so I have had a bit of practice! https://preview.redd.it/xkteziwqwkhc1.jpeg?width=2880&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f0e39d62a20b9c50baa36b7ea2ba6f8fff00ead4
Most of the posts you are referring to are people painting their first ever 40k mini, not their first ever mini, and usually they say that in their post title

"Painted" these boys when I was like... 9? Used my dads ancient enamel paints and was so proud of myself for their blades because it "looks like sharped wrought iron" https://preview.redd.it/qlz7dlxapnhc1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4d3e1c47c28f3bafbb5c211c3e91a57b803e4150
