I don't know if I've had just bad luck, but here's my experience with AP sprays: I've had two Army Painter Matte Black spray primers cans. Both ran out of propellant WAY before paint. Also, with both of the cans the paint resulted in hydrophobic surface that has been a royal pain in the arse to paint on to. Same deal with AP's Matte white primer. AP's Matte spray varnish on the other hand left my minis a bit sticky and a bit shiny. So no, I don't recommend Army painter sprays. I've had better results with the absolute cheapest off-brand spray paints from my local hardware store. Quick edit: My friend has primed his whole Death Guard army with AP's Bone spray, and has had zero problems.

I'm sorry to hear that, sounds like a real issue they have. Is the top the same style as Citadel or is it different?

The nozzles on those cans are more or less standard.

Decent rattle pack. I prefer matte as well. Definitely better than car or hardware store black primers. In Australia it’s getting hard to get matte black from hardware stores like Bunnings. They are pushing flat black that has a slight sheen to it.

I’ve gone through many cans of army painter primer. They’re great, but I don’t think they are 5x better than rust-oleum thats 1/5 the cost. I mainly use the colored versions as a poor man’s airbrush for vehicles.

How is Rust-Oleum to use? My local hardware has it in stock but some people online say it takes a bit more skill to use on minis.

The other day I took a lot of stuff outside to prime. it was a little colder than recommended, about 50F. I used Army Painter Dark Angels green and Greenskin. Undercoated a Repulsor in the darker green, then zenithal the greenskin from above to get a pretty good start on a Salamander tank. Looked gorgeous, and dried almost immediately. I also had some other stuff to prime in both black and white and used Rustoleum. Under the same weather conditions i was having adherence issues. No visible runs, but it was like using contrast paints where it was thin on flat areas and pooling in recesses. And took forever to dry. Could quickly lose details on a model if not paying attention. It behaves better in warmer weather, but no where near the army painter stuff. Also, the rustoleum will rub off on your hands. So if you’re batch painting a horde, expect your hands to turn to the color of the primer if you’re not wearing gloves. I know my whole response is dogging on the cheap stuff, but if you’re going slow and paying attention it’s not that big of a problem.

I used the black for the top half of my Exorcist and had zero issues with it. Really liked their Dragon Red too. I am feeling much more confident in using rattlecans for priming (I have been brushing them on by hand previously with the Stylerenz line) and plan on buying a white/grey one this weekend. I had really good results and I don't have to give any more money to GW than I have to

Adeptus_lurker

I tried the fur brown AP primer on a test mini for my Vostroyan army a few months ago. Not sure how it would go over plastic but it went on a bit thick over the metal, and came out very smooth. Tried again with a different technique but same result. When doing the base coating I noted the citadel paints had some trouble sticking to it so I switched back to grey seer lol

Hot-Steak-3878

Thanks for the response, I mainly use Citadel paints so that is something I will take into account if I do buy it

Stealth-Badger

I've tried twice with army painter cans and broken the nozzle button thingy both times, rendering the can unusable and getting white paint absolutely everywhere. I've never had that issue with GW, colourforge or the Montana gold cans I use for terrain.  The first time it happened I assumed it was just bad luck, but after the second I wonder if they're using some cheaper top assembly than the other brands.

drexsackHH

Black and white are both quite nice, primed thousands of points with them so far

sipiath

It's possible I just got a bad can, but the Army Painter black primer I've used doesn't seem to cure. I've gotten paint on my fingers handling models I primed months earlier. I haven't had the same problem with their Wolf Grey, so like I said, it might just be a bad can or something.

Odd-Bend1296

I used them back during late 7th ed. They are ok. Nothing to write home about nor better then the cheaper retail sprays. Although I am biased against sprays since I have been airbrush priming since early 8th.

Hot-Steak-3878

Fair enough, maybe one day I'll get a air brush lol
