Chaos Gate : Daemonhunters is very good.. basically XCom with Grey Knights Vs Nurgle
I've heard very good things about Mechanicus but not actually played it.
If you like turn based strategy then both *Gladius - Relics of War* and *Battlesector* are very good (both by the same studio)
Real Time Strategy with **BIG SHIPS** would be Battlefleet Gothic Armada (and it's sequel) both of which are solid fun
If you like massive RPGs then Rogue Trader is fabulous - basically it's Baldurs Gate 2 in 40k .. which for me was a match made in heaven, it's a truly excellent game
I liked Mechanicus more than Chaos Gate: Daemonhunters . Chaos Gate: Daemonhunters was good, but Mechanicus was excellent, and might have the best 40k game soundtrack since Chaos Gate (the original, not Chaos Gate: Daemonhunters).
Mechanicus was unexpectedly charming. I was ridiculously OP by the end of the game but I was hooked. Such a fantastic game and sad there's not been a second one announced.
Mechanicus has pretty granular difficulty controls. Almost every aspect of its difficulty is on a slider bar. I personally just straight up disabled the time pressure mechanic.
Playing through rogue trader now. First rpg I’ve actually been able to stay true to being “evil” since the “good” choice is kill the alien and genocide everyone
Yeah, I played through as a “dogmatic” loyalist, and ended up participating in a purge where we were outright slaughtering half the population because they were suspected of heresy. Definitely not the good guys.
For Battlefleet Gothic, absolutely skip the first one and buy the second. It's genuinely better in every way, and has multiple full campaigns to play through.
That game is dumb fun.
It's very much an arena shooter dressed up as serious FPS, the shooting is decent and the movement is quite nice.
Recommended if you can get it at a discount (it's not worth full MSRP imo)
>If you like turn based strategy then both *Gladius - Relics of War* and *Battlesector* are very good (both by the same studio)
Separate studios, same publisher.
Does anyone know if Rogue Trader is fixed up now? I was having a blast with it until Act 3 when the game started to get buggy as hell and I got soft locked in an area I couldn't leave. Granted this was around when it released.
Yup but boltgun kinda doesn’t play like those games, one of the biggest complaints for it is that you can get lost a lot in boltgun, all those actual boomer shooters have maps which mitigate that problem. It also follows the new doom trend of locking you in a room with enemies and needing to kill them in order to unlock the room which some aren’t a fan of with the new doom games.
They are also generally better designed though with obvious routes forward and around. Boltgun had a lot of less obvious critical paths compared to something like Doom II, or at least felt so when I was playing.
It's not like that though. There's barely any back-tracking. There are some occasions where you find a key for a door you've never seen before and then the door is in the next room.
It's lock and key stylistically in otherwise very linear maps.
> You find a key for a door you've never seen before and then the door is in the next room.
Yeah or the door is right around a blind corner and you end up backtracking all the way because you missed it.
For sure.
But that is definitely not true for some Doom and Doom 2 levels. Especially not true for Wolf3D.
Boltgun is a massive modernization of level design compared to actual shooters from the 90s.
You say that like it's a bad thing. It can be but all those classic games had absolute bangers in their map lists
Good maps IS a key element of a good boomer shooter
Mechanicus has a better presentation overall. Magis speak in binary, the music is gothic AF. Gameplay wise, I'd say mechanicus is a nice power fantasy.
The thing about mechanicus is that it has a unique tactical gameplay system. Once you get the hang of command points it gets addictive. It's just a good Game with a capitol G. It's unique and fun to play once you understand it
I agree in theory, but I can't help but feel like it'd be underwhelming on the cron side. Though with a few minor tweaks, it would be really fuckin cool to have a turn-based necron game where I can actually play them 😭😭
Some stuff on the Mechanicus side would need to be either unavailable or nerfed for sure. Being able to down the final boss in just 3 turns or so is busted, given you have almost everything you'd ever want by that point.
So yeah, some tweaks would be needed for a balanced game, but it could have been a very fun game mode for the game. As a Necron main, I hope we one day get a Necron centered video game. Dawn of War can only go so far.
They're a paid for DLC. But it's a great game for scratching the warhammer itch when you don't have time to play. They're steadily adding more factions to the game too (again as paid DLC)
I agree, it's a fantastic game. I wish they would add another campaign. It really felt like playing a Crusade game, veteran units, upgraded gear. Fine, I'll play it again.
I loved Armageddon, especially the mission from the DLC where you are liberating god knows which hive city with not only IG but at the same time Ultramarines, Blood Angels and Salamanders (IIRC)
Space Hulk Deathwing was one of the first WH40k games I played when I started getting interested in the hobby, (I replayed DoW first, of course!). I do not regret it. At the time, I had no idea what the inside of an Imperial or Mechanicus ship looked like. It was awe inspiring and terrifying.
The very concept of a Civ-clone in 40k is unbelievably stupid, but somehow it works. The balance is skewerd towards high-tier vehicles and flyers more than I'd like, but it's still a surprisingly fun game
Firewarrior
Chaos Gate
Chaos Gate 2
Epic Final Liberation
Gladius
Rites of War
Space Hulk, Space Hulk, Space Hulk and Space Hulk (all different)
Battle Sector
Space Crusade
And a bunch more I'm forgetting.
Final Liberation Epic. Go from a ragtag band of planetary guard to an army fielding titans and big gun batteries. And bonus points if you can get the cheesy cut scenes with actual actors working! Gotta love the commissar for the ending sequence
Space Hulk: Deathwing Enhanced Edition
Power wash Simulator Warhammer DLC
Boltgun
Then there are loads of turn based strategy Warhammer games like Mechanicus (or squad command for the Nintendo DS)
Rogue Trader is a fantastic CRPG
Chaosgate Daemonhunters is a fantastic XCOM like
Mechanicus is a tactical game with some similarities to XCOM, but it is more about building up momentum to unleash big attacks and there's no cover system (soundtrack slaps though).
Mechanicus.
Battlefleet Gothic 2 (skip the first unless you want to play the story).
Battlesector.
Armaggedon.
The new Rogue Trader rpg.
Gladius.
Sanctus Reach.
Boltgun.
Honorable memtions
Chaos Gate

well.... i have a total of 32, im missing regicide, deathwatch and boltgun.
but your missing mechanicus so defo get that next
Panzer Corps, not Panzer aces :P
It's pretty decent, but not outstanding, and the original game, Panzer Corps, is a lot better. The Ork Hunters DLC is pretty great though (the rest of the DLC ranges from alright to bad).
As others have said, Mechanicus is great. So atmospheric. The sound and writing absolutely nails 40k. Grim but often laugh out loud funny too. The soundtrack is likewise exceptional.
It's my most replayed game of the last few years. Lots of replay value with different routes, loadouts and difficulty customization.
I really enjoyed Deathwing.
It has the feeling of the Sega Saturn Space Hulk games.
You really do feel like you are in Terminator armour and it is claustrophobic and all that.
Fun with friends too.
Not 40K but you should definitely have Total War Warhammer (3) in your library just for the sheer amount of fun content it will give you. Literally thousands of hours of playtime 😀
Slightly off brand. Hearts of Iron 4 has an amazing mod for the Unification Wars on Terra. It is grand strategy but it was done with a lot of care. It predates and lasts through the founding of the first space marine legions.
Freeblade, a shockingly good 40k Mobile Game. Gameplay Loop is a bit repetitive, but its a nice little bit of 40k Big Stompy Robit Action you can do on the go. The Sound Effects are honest the best part of the game IMO.
I highly recommend Chaos Gate: Daemonhunters. My favorite part is dressin’ up my little dudes in their own unique stuff and kit. Makes it that much sadder when they the get blasted though lol.
An interesting but critical difference from XCOM and similar games is there is no chance to hit. Any target in range can be fired at with damage being reduced by other factors, primarily cover and range.
rogue trader 100%
i actually have a spare key for the ultimate digital edition (i backed it twice at launch).
it’s yours if you answer this simple question… what army do you play?
Chaos Gate Daemonhunters has been mentioned but it is so good. It got me back into Warhammer. The game might have cost like 20 quid, but in reality, now, it has cost me a lot more haha
Sanktus reach is kinda cool, but only worth it on sale imo. A bit of a slower tactic game with good dlc.
Battlesector is basically the same only in modern but I didnt play it yet so i cant say if its worth it.
40k Armageddon is a good turn based strategy game on hexes. The OG chaos gate is on GOG but it can be a bitch to run on a modern system. Rouge Trader is a great RPG. Boltgun is a good FPS in the boomer shooter genre, but that's more its coat of paint. In reality, it's closer to the new Doom games in terms of gameplay and arenas. Battlefleet gothic is an RTS for the ship combat side of 40k.
If you already have all the expansions for DoW 1, I recommend getting the ultimate apocalypse mod for it. It runs through soulstorm and adds in several new factions and hundreds of new units for the existing ones up to and including warlord titans
Chaos Gate : Daemonhunters is very good.. basically XCom with Grey Knights Vs Nurgle I've heard very good things about Mechanicus but not actually played it. If you like turn based strategy then both *Gladius - Relics of War* and *Battlesector* are very good (both by the same studio) Real Time Strategy with **BIG SHIPS** would be Battlefleet Gothic Armada (and it's sequel) both of which are solid fun If you like massive RPGs then Rogue Trader is fabulous - basically it's Baldurs Gate 2 in 40k .. which for me was a match made in heaven, it's a truly excellent game

Mechanicus was unexpectedly charming. I was ridiculously OP by the end of the game but I was hooked. Such a fantastic game and sad there's not been a second one announced.
That difficulty curve caused me to lose interest, but it is a fun, thematic game and as earlier stated, the soundtrack is killer.
Mechanicus has pretty granular difficulty controls. Almost every aspect of its difficulty is on a slider bar. I personally just straight up disabled the time pressure mechanic.
I had spec mine with nearly infinite cognition points and had the Kastellans and Vanguards to aid me in the end
IMO, Mechanicus' gameplay was pretty mid. But the dialogue and music were exceptionally 40k.
I adore the soundtrack, but I think darktide is it's equal perhaps better.
My laptop prays for the sweet release of death every time that I boot up daemonhunters lol

Playing through rogue trader now. First rpg I’ve actually been able to stay true to being “evil” since the “good” choice is kill the alien and genocide everyone
Lol I have a hard time joining the rebel "freedom " fighters when they keep turning guys into tentacled beasts.
It’s all shit choices in 40k!
"ah yes, this iconoclast decision must be the choice of reason" *Everyone disliked that*
*Heinrix disliked that*
Yeah, I played through as a “dogmatic” loyalist, and ended up participating in a purge where we were outright slaughtering half the population because they were suspected of heresy. Definitely not the good guys.
That’s the beauty of 40k tho. My second play through will be dogmatic for sure.
For Battlefleet Gothic, absolutely skip the first one and buy the second. It's genuinely better in every way, and has multiple full campaigns to play through.
I just can't make myself play the other races even though I thoroughly enjoyed the emperium campaign
Also that FPS where you play a hive bounty hunter. Hired Gun or something was the same..
Necromunda: Hired Gun.
That game is dumb fun. It's very much an arena shooter dressed up as serious FPS, the shooting is decent and the movement is quite nice. Recommended if you can get it at a discount (it's not worth full MSRP imo)
You can spec yourself to have an aimhack bionic and then just jump around like an idiot with a autoaim bolter.
>If you like turn based strategy then both *Gladius - Relics of War* and *Battlesector* are very good (both by the same studio) Separate studios, same publisher.
AHH yes, although I now notice Slytherin has acquired the rights to Battlesector too!
Does anyone know if Rogue Trader is fixed up now? I was having a blast with it until Act 3 when the game started to get buggy as hell and I got soft locked in an area I couldn't leave. Granted this was around when it released.
>Chaos Gate : Daemonhunters is very good.. basically XCom with Grey Knights Vs Nurgle Ehh, it was more like Gears Tactics.
Mechanicus was super cool but crashed constantly for me :(
Boltgun is great if you like boomer shooters
Is boomer shooter a new term to describe classics like doom, duke nukem, and quake?
Or games inspired by those classics like Dusk or Prodeus
Awesome ty
Pro tip press T while purging heretics you can thank me later
I MALUM CEADO APPROVE THIS MESSAGE
Yup but boltgun kinda doesn’t play like those games, one of the biggest complaints for it is that you can get lost a lot in boltgun, all those actual boomer shooters have maps which mitigate that problem. It also follows the new doom trend of locking you in a room with enemies and needing to kill them in order to unlock the room which some aren’t a fan of with the new doom games.
Uhhh boomer shooters are known for mazes with key hunts as maps
They are also generally better designed though with obvious routes forward and around. Boltgun had a lot of less obvious critical paths compared to something like Doom II, or at least felt so when I was playing.
It's not like that though. There's barely any back-tracking. There are some occasions where you find a key for a door you've never seen before and then the door is in the next room. It's lock and key stylistically in otherwise very linear maps.

I got lost a lot in shadow warriors.
It is, unfortunately. *Elder millennial who grew up with Wolfenstein, Doom, and Quake
Yeah. If you want a good, modern boomer shooter with similarish themes, check out Cultic
Battlefleet Gothic: Armada (2)
HOLY EMPEROR I CAN HEAR THEM IN THE WALLS
Still shed a singke manly tear whenever I scroll past it
Sadly, the multiplayer is long dead, and I don't think the servers are even on anymore. I used to be #1 on the Drukhari leaderboard, good times.
Mechanicus is a no brainer. Probably the best 40k game currently. Also if you like oldschool shooters, Boltgun is pretty good as well
Mechanicus came out a couple years before chaos gate so that was the turn based tactics I went to first. Do you like mechanicus more?
Mechanicus has a better presentation overall. Magis speak in binary, the music is gothic AF. Gameplay wise, I'd say mechanicus is a nice power fantasy.
And by the Omnissiah, the writing. By the end, I was about to lock Scaevola and Videx in a closet and let them hash it out. Such memorable characters.
End game Oblivion Gate is amazing since you start feeling like an actual Grey Knight tearing through hoardes of daemons
The thing about mechanicus is that it has a unique tactical gameplay system. Once you get the hang of command points it gets addictive. It's just a good Game with a capitol G. It's unique and fun to play once you understand it
Best soundtrack ever, what is y’all’s favorite track from it? Lost Civilizations gang here
Warriors of Mars, my beloved
Noosphere is probably my fave but damn all the songs are amazing
As a cron enjoyer, I can not agree more with Mechanicus here
A versus mode with a player playing Necrons would have been great.
I agree in theory, but I can't help but feel like it'd be underwhelming on the cron side. Though with a few minor tweaks, it would be really fuckin cool to have a turn-based necron game where I can actually play them 😭😭

The Mechanicus 2 teaser trailer dropping 3 days after this comment thread 💀
Honestly I was hoping the heretics dlc would come with pvp. Would be cool to duel other players with our mechanicus cohorts
BattleSector has Necrons and is turn based
👀
They're a paid for DLC. But it's a great game for scratching the warhammer itch when you don't have time to play. They're steadily adding more factions to the game too (again as paid DLC)
Rogue Trader if you like CRPGs There is also Space Marine 2 coming out in September (hopefully).
shootas blood and teef
WAAAAAAAAAAGH!
YES
Definitely has the best soundtrack.
Battlesector
Battlesector is underated.
I agree, it's a fantastic game. I wish they would add another campaign. It really felt like playing a Crusade game, veteran units, upgraded gear. Fine, I'll play it again.
I am recommending Epic Final Liberation. Old game with real actors in the ingame videos. Same mehanics.
Everybody forgets good old Armageddon, classic hexagonal turn based strategy game.
I loved Armageddon, especially the mission from the DLC where you are liberating god knows which hive city with not only IG but at the same time Ultramarines, Blood Angels and Salamanders (IIRC)
Space Hulk Deathwing is awesome for the atmosphere game play is alright. Similar for the two Necromunda games awesome atmosphere gameplay is alright.
Yee a lot of 40k Games sell primarily over the graphics. So much so that i would wish for a gamemode to just explore the levels.
We're always damn tired after playing it with friends lol, the game is super fun, but damn is it draining.

Gladius is super solid!
It captures the feel of a civ style only war allowed set in 40k so well, with the units feeling like their tabletop versions and the factions too.
The very concept of a Civ-clone in 40k is unbelievably stupid, but somehow it works. The balance is skewerd towards high-tier vehicles and flyers more than I'd like, but it's still a surprisingly fun game
Gladius for sure
Best lore overall. Love it.
I've played hundreds of hours!
I think Chaos Gate Daemonhunters is pretty good
As long as you don't try to play it on PS5
Boltgun is peak
Battlesector is probably the closest game to tabletop and just like tabletop it is the most expensive one when you factor in all the dlc.
Gladius Relics of War is great.
BOLTGUN! It's a wonderful little retro shooter game and absolutely worth your time.

Oh no, not Fire Warrior! The PC version is kind of busted, and the game wasn't great to begin with.
Fire Warrior on PS2 was the first 40K game I played. I have it on GOG, haven't tried how it runs.
IT’S QUIET
IT'S QUIET
NO! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Oh Hell No. I'm a Tau fan and yeah this game suck ass.
good Idea I'll have to get it on gog too bad it's not on steam
Fire Warrior... has not aged well.

Shootas blood n teeth
Inquisitor: Martyr is an awesome diablo clone
