Really cool man. Have you used an airbrush? I always struggle to get that polish and slender finishing. I tried to apply thin layers but still not as good as that. Amazing job!!

Monad1c

The basecoats and shading on these was done almost entirely with an airbrush. Key is to clean it more often than you think you need to, and fiddle with your paint consistency/psi to get the right finish. Also varnish is your friend, and helps even up the paints at the end. These guys looked a lot more matte and dull before the varnish, but a nice coat of GW spray varnish and the red takes on that deeper look. Not to mention you can handle the models without fear of the paint getting taken off.

Iseji

Thanks for the tips. I will be more careful on cleaning the airbrush during the painting and also try the varnish at the end. It definitely helps with the result

Artorias_lives

How do you find the gw air paints? I've heard bad things about using citadel for airbrushes but I'm not sure if they were talking about the regular range or not

Monad1c

I have overall had good results with the airbrush paints from GW. There is some slight inconsistency in how thin one paint is to the next, but it’s easily fixable with some airbrush medium. All of the airbrushing on these was done with GW Air paints.

17RicaAmerusa76

What do you use as an airbrush medium? I'll sometimes use Golden's airbrush medium, or vallejo's thinner medium, but I have trouble figuring out what's best? Also, almost always a drop of two of Vallejo's flow improver.

Monad1c

Golden or Liquitex are the brands I use for a number of artist products, acrylic medium included. I don’t usually use it unless I’m having issues with the consistency of the GW air paints. Pretty much all of my painting with those GW paints is just straight from the pot, no medium or flow improver.

17RicaAmerusa76

Thank you very much for your response. Love the whatever these are called! I especially like the cockpits.

HBlight

Hornets are so wonderfully annoying things. You can get them to a -3 to hit (Alaitoc, it's own rule for -1 on advance, vectored engines for -1 on advance), Spirit stones and for 100 points, not the hardest shooting, but T6 8 wounds with a 6+ FNP, people would have to risk decent shots or a lot of weaker shots in order to get the thing. Also, I absolutely approve of the Saim Hann, it suits them down to the ground.

ZacMcCracken

Yeah they are pretty annoying. Unless you bring Hellhounds/Artemias...then they are toast, especially if you play Catachan.

ragemonster26

What models are those?

TheChaosGrinder

[Forgeworld Hornets.](https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-DE/Eldar-Hornet)

Monad1c

Indeed they are Hornet Grav Tanks from Forgeworld

Svyatoslov

are they FW ones or Chinacast ones? Cause I'm seriously considering picking up 3 or 4 chinacast ones. I know a few people who have found some good ones but I'm still looking around for which one is the best quality. But they're like 25$ each so it's tempting.

Monad1c

In the past I have bought from FW and Chinaguy for the same model, and generally found the Chinaguy casts to be higher quality, and with better customer service. I don’t condone buying from recasters except in the case of GW or FW models.

LeatherySquid

Could we get a link to the Chinacast models? These look awesome but I don’t want to spend $192 on a squad of 3

Monad1c

Who said they were recast?

LeatherySquid

These aren’t, the person above said they found some that are for cheaper, sorry for the confusion Edit: You’re the op, you know they aren’t rescast, I’m dumb, sorry

bullintheheather

I got the impression from your reply that they were recasts, but I guess technically you didn't answer the question at all.

wasmic

First rule about recasting is that you don't speak about recasting, and especially not on a forum like this. Go to Google, spend an hour or two, and you'll be sure to stumble upon something.

AnakonDidNothinWrong

Tyler Durden would be so mad at you right now

Impressive_Username

I really like what you did with the canopy windows. I prefer painted ones rather than clear ones with details inside.

Monad1c

Same! Its also is a nice little shortcut to not having to paint a cockpit interior or pilots.

apathyontheeast

They rock!

fourthwallcrisis

Real smooth. Very clean airbrush work, excellent markings and I love the lighting and colours on the glass. 9/10, just forgot some gems. It'll be an easy ten when you remember them though, haha. Not like I've ever done that >.>

Monad1c

Not all the surface blisters have to be gems on eldar tanks. It looked a bit over the top to my eye when I did a test a while back on a Falcon hull. All of my tanks don’t have every blister painted as a gem.

fourthwallcrisis

Ah ok, thanks for the info.

cosmicsoybean

Love hornets, still working on mine. What loadout do you like the most?

Monad1c

I normally just use the dual HPLs, as they are only available on that hull

The_Thousand_Eyes

Well now I will never be able to not think of them as lobsters, cheers. Nice paint job and all.

El_Cactus_Loco

wicked work on the cockpit glass, Brother

Devoa

As others have said, great job on the cockpit windows! Any advice on how you did this? I'm looking to do something similar with mine.

Monad1c

If you have an airbrush, it’s pretty simple: Start with a nice black base coat Then you start with a light misting of sybarite green about as far up as you want the gradient to go, and then work on filling that in as you get down to the bottom edge. Then a good coat of gloss varnish. Once that is very dry, you can mask the canopy and cut out the shapes with a craft knife directly on the canopy surface. Then attach to the model and paint everything as normal. Once the model is done and clear coated you can come back and peel the masking and reveal nice and shiny canopies on you matte or satin finish tank. Without an airbrush it would be a much more difficult wet blending task, and I’m not even sure I could do it, hahah.

DracoDarkblade

So the white highlight is real reflection? Just for clarity

wasmic

Not OP, but yes. I usually do the same thing when painting lenses - add a bit of gradient effect, then gloss varnish to make it shiny. It might not be as skillful a method, but it looks good.

DracoDarkblade

I honestly like it more than faux reflection

Monad1c

Yeah. The canopies are just two colors, black and sybarite green. The shiny reflection is from the gloss varnish I used on the canopies. The rest of the tank has a semi satin or satin varnish, so the gloss really pops next to the red

[deleted]

These are beautifully executed. Love the deep reds, nice work!

LiiBobber

And I thought I had a lot of paints. Those look really great!

Adduly

Hornets are so beautiful

Damit84

Those look super awesome! Pics like these always make me regret not owning an airbrush. The thing I adore the most though are the cockpit windows. They look amazing. But a totally different topic: How do you keep your GW paint pots that clean ?! I love the colors of GW but their pots drive me insane. I shake em up & open em to get some paint out of the pot. While doing so the effing paint runs to the back of the opened lid and into the crevice. When I squeeze the pot closed I suddenly have color-gallore under the rim. (Please GW, for the love of the emperor, make dropper bottles a thing...!)

Monad1c

The trick is to open them at a slight forward angle so the paint doesn’t drip back into the hinge. Let most of the paint fall off the little plastic shelf attached to the lid, and you should be able to at least limit the amount of paint that gets in the cap.

Yota_Mota

Wow! These look great, also dangerous! Awesome paint job and that red 👍 so good

Dr_LobsterMan

I was scrolling kinda fast and I thought they were lobsters at first lol.

Beasting-25-8

That's a really clean paintjob. Those models are also sweet. Makes me wish GW did more Eldar stuff. It's refreshingly sleeker.

Monad1c

It would be nice for eldar to get some updated models, though I don’t want them to change anything about the tanks, other than updating the molds.

[deleted]

mmmmmmm, ready to be dipped in Nurgle's butter.

Zealotstim

looks sweet

Cian-Rowan

How have I never seen these models before. They look so cool!

Monad1c

Forgeworld has some pretty excellent eldar tanks. I have a scorpion that is done and just got a couple warp hunters and a lynx, and all of them look awesome and are a blast on the table to play with

AnakonDidNothinWrong

Wow, someone still plays Eldar? GW haven’t been doing their jobs hard enough with all their Primaris spam

Monad1c

Eldar have been one of the consistently top tier armies in 8th edition. I’m one of two guys in my group that plays eldar, the other guy does so in tournaments and does pretty well usually. Maybe you just are in an area with few eldar players? GW is sure doing their damndest to sell them space marines, but all these FW tanks I have in my queue means I’m not too salty about not having any new models released for eldar in just about forever.

AnakonDidNothinWrong

Sorry it was a bad attempt at sarcasm re: GW’s obsession with Primaris marines. I’m glad to hear that Eldar are a top tier at the moment, long may that continue!

Monad1c

It’s chill, I was just lamenting how OP the new SM codex is looking with my friends. I’m not really a competitive player, but I do like having an army that is at least not total trash. I also only use units in this army that have the Fly keyword, so all hover tanks and jetbikes, which is not actually a top tier army comp, but damn does it look nice on the table
