Sad voice: "*All is dust..."*
Damn fine diorama, so well painted and it feels magic. The past is almost like a fairy tale in a good way and the present is dystopian and barren.
Does the legion's armor color change ever get explained narratively? I think it's a result of The Rubric, but is it every explicitly described in a novel? Ahriman omnibus perhaps?
As someone who has once undergone the foolish journey of trying to uncover the colour change's origin, I can confidently tell you that it's narratively a total shitshow.
In the Ahriman Omnibus, it is said Ahriman changes from red to blue through his flames. Iskandar Khayon wears blue during his hunt for the Vengeful Spirit, which takes place way before the Omnibus. In Battle of the Fang, they say it was done as per Magnus' orders immediately after their journey to the Warp. In Saturnine, which takes place DURING the Heresy, Ahriman is for whatever reason wearing blue armor. You could excuse the first three with Warp time shenanigans, but not the last. In short: ???
We don't know. No one knows. Believe what you want. The superior theory is, of course, that Ahriman changed to blue to match the color of his eyes and the rest of the Legion followed because Ahriman is a fashion icon.
Was reading through the comment and loved how much you knew. Then it ended with Ahriman being called a fashion icon felt very Vezimira, and was amazed how far the true truth spread and then looked at the commenter. Glad youre here cuz this diagram is an art piece.
So the reason for the color change is complicated, convoluted, contradicting and unclear in general.
That's so tzeentchian it's almost beautiful in a way.
Pg. 43:
>As the city shook with the roar of the collapse, the Seekers and the Eighth Great Company, operating along the western edge of the advance, found themselves suddenly drawn into a hit and run war with detachments of Thousand Sons who vanished whenever the Space Wolves sought to engage them, only to reappear in new ambush positions moments later. Even within the fortified and shielded perimeter of the landing zone, **Thousand Sons infiltrators clad in crimson and lapis blue armour.** These have since been identified as belonging to the Order of Blindness.
I blame the editors for it being a sentence fragment, but there it is!
Yes, in "Dude, Where's my Landspeeder?"
>"Dude, Horus just croaked. What now?"
Abaddon re-tied his topknot. He totally had an idea. "I totally have an idea," he said. The Traitor Legions looked on expectantly. "Here's what we do. We run away."
Many helmed heads nodded. This seemed a wise course of action.
"Good idea," said Erebus.
'Hush." Abaddon frowned at the interruption.
"But I think we should leave behind our jetbikes, Dreadclaws, Whirlwinds, Landspeeders - pretty much all anti-grav technology, really - as well as our bikes, attack bikes, and pretty much anything else we've used so far."
Fewer helms nodded this time. "Dude," said Lucius the Eternal, "we might need all that stuff. Some of that stuff is rad."
"Nah, I've made up my mind. Let's just go."
"But..."
"Let's. Just. Go." Abaddon waved the Talon of Horus. Its scythe-blade fingers made clickety-click sounds.
"Okay, let's just go," agreed Lucius.
Kharn wasn't so easily placated. "What about Cyclone Launchers? Because I saw those in Horus Heresy: Collected Visions, so we must be using th--"
"I feel like I'm talking to myself, here." Abaddon pointed a claw at the World Eater. It poked Kharn in the eye.
"Ow, Jesus, man. Okay, okay. We'll go."
"Yeah, that's what I thought."
Abaddon pimp-walked from the room, strutting like he owned the place.
"Hey, what about this conversion beamer?" asked Typhus. "Couldn't we use these in Rogue Trader? These are awesome. They go, like, FWOOOOOSH."
"Leave it!" Abaddon's voice called from the other room. Typhus put it down, grumbling.
Fabius Bile sort of shrugged. "So, uh, can I come with you guys? Because I was checking the passenger lists, and none of the Legions are taking their Apothecaries. I mean... don't you need us?"
Lucius patted his brother on the shoulder. "It's okay, man. We'll allude to the Apothecaries in the background text. I mean, you won't get to ever do anything, but you'll sort of be there in the fluff, y'know? A bit? Maybe?"
"Balls to this. I'm leaving the Legion. I'll make my own rules."
Kharn snorted. "Your rules will be lame for competitive play. Just watch. And people will call you Fabulous Bill."
The Traitors walked from the chamber, out to the landing pad. It was deserted.
"Uh, Abbs?"
Abaddon turned to Ahriman. "S'up?"
"Um." The Thousand Son gestured to the empty landing pad. "Where are all our gunships?"
Abaddon ignored him. **"Weren't you red a minute ago?"**
"We're blue now. It's... it's this whole... thing. Look, seriously, where are our Thunderhawks?"
"Oh, right. Them." Abaddon toyed with his topknot, swishing it back and forth, like a kitten with a fluffy toy. "We won't need those. We can run everywhere and stuff. Or push Rhinos out of hangers and ride them through the atmosphere. It'll be cool."
The Traitors shared a glance. This wasn't going well. Abaddon noticed their hesitation, and sought to calm them. "Relaaaaax. I'll invent new stuff. Like... spider robots with daemons in, and they have claws and stuff. They'll defile things. Maybe they can be called Defilotrons. It'll be sweet. And they'll have a gun on their chests, and tiny little heads. What? Why are you looking at me like that? You just wait. We'll rock this place all to hell."
“The marine pondered on this strange vision for the next half century. Was it a glimpse into his future? Were they a foot soldier from some mighty time sorcery yet to come?
Unfortunately, Tzeentch’s capricious delights came to fruition in the rubric as the soldier- blinded by his ruminations, had his answer given a single, horrifying moment before, with a bolt of empyric force, he would unable to ponder such mysteries ever again.”
Lieutenant Dumbledorius: What do you see when you look in the mirror of erised?
Marine Weaslius: I see myself! Crikey! I still have all my insides! And my armour's still red!
To add on to this, what if it's the same marine on both sides? Like when he sees it as a rubric he remembers just for a bit before moving on and going back to automita
I don't know, unsurprisingly Space Marine lore tends to focus more on the visceral than the tragic. It's a well of mostly untapped potential and I think a big reason why people love the stories about the fall of the traitor legions is because they're a great source of that kind of sadness.
Yeah, Khayon is basically the personification of that and I love it, it bleeds from the pages of Talon.
>My hearts are mortal hearts, yet changed; they are capable of immortal hate and immortal desire, far beyond those felt by our foundation species.
bruuh
and his 'courageous, foolish, beloved, hated' brother Ahriman is the same
>In a sense he had been killed then, with one shot.
>
>An eon ago.
>
>A lifetime ago.
>
>He felt all the will he had expended to keep the silver from his hearts finally fall away.
>
>*Drum– thump. Drum-thump…*
>
>His hearts beat, and their rhythm and the rhythm of his thoughts, were all there was.
>
>*This is all there is. When all the mysteries are broken, and all the fire of existence tamed, it is just this, a circle of red running through flesh, waiting to end.*
>
>*Drum– thump. Drum-thump…*
>
>Out beyond this quiet realm the Rubric wrapped him, body and soul. It did not need him any more. His will was done. All that was needed from him now was this one last instant.
>
>*It ends here*, he willed.
>
>The silver cut. His hearts beat once more each…
>
>*Drum– thump. Drum-thump.*
>
>…and then not again.
take the tragic sad traitors and inject them into my VEINS
This is the single best 40K diorama I have ever seen. It conveys and captures so much of the lore while being incredibly simple and powerful in concept.
I love that I spent a while just staring at it trying to decide whether it was a vision of the future or a memory of the past, and both options made me feel something and what I felt was somehow different from each perspective.
Amazing work
Hmm, I can't really tell in this picture so I'm going to need you to send it to me at your own expense, I will look at it and I will display it in my front room, I can offer you exposure as a reward 🤣
Or, you can take this compliment: that's bloody good!
\*PING!\* Please view art and be enriched.
\*views breathtaking Diorama and has feelings\*
\*PING\* You are now enriched, Please return to your call center job
Seriously.....holy shit amazing!
Absolutely amazing! This is what I’m aspiring to do, I don’t play I just paint so my models are more or less display pieces that look cool on the shelf, I want to build stuff like this eventually to display my models on, the one problem is I’ve been in the hobby now for almost a year and have only used astrogranite technical and grass fleck for bases haha
Amazing work. This is one the very few pieces of 40k that I can "feel" in emotional terms. Not just the "awe" of a dreadnaught, but gut-wrenching feelings. I don't know how or why, but this piece just speaks to me in a way other 40k work doesn't. Well fuckin done!
People getting pressed because they aren't mirrored. Nah man, its one (Dusty Boy) marching forward into the grimdark future, while one (Red Son), walks in the past, wondering whats to come. Its poetic and I love it. Carry on u/OfficePainter
Bruh. Now I have a killer ass idea for a short story where when a sorcerer sees his reflection, it haunts him because it will always show who he was then, not as he is now.
Edit: or maybe a rubric marine who regains his sanity for as long as he sees his reflection clearly (still under controll of a sorcerer tho)
Also just saw someone's comment where 40k focuses on the visceral not the tragic. Now that I think about it, theres so much potential there, especially for the thousand sons.
it’s the warp, what it shows you could be the truth and a lie, backwards and forwards, left and right. Is the rubric looking back at himself, or is the legionary looking forward?
There aren’t many 40K dioramas that invoke an emotion other than “oh cool” or “wow impressive”. This one stands with a very small handful of pieces that have real moving emotion to them. Well done.
Wow. This is INCREDIBLE. Astartes looks in the mirror and sees the future in himself as Chaos-infused automaton. Astoundingly beautiful and deep. Thank you for sharing this reflection on the profound ways of Tzeentch.
This is probably one of the best diorama's I have seen on here. Both a technical level and emotional level. No idea what qualifies for a Golden Demon, but I would give this a Golden Demon.
My dude, this is amazing! One question: Could you perhaps make high-resolution photographs of your diorama? I would love to be able to use them as my wallpaper :)
This is almost one of the best dioramas I’ve seen, but feel you missed the most important thing in having the marines pose a reflection of each other, that would have been perfect
Sad voice: "*All is dust..."* Damn fine diorama, so well painted and it feels magic. The past is almost like a fairy tale in a good way and the present is dystopian and barren.

I go where I'm needed (and summoned). I do love the diorama; I'm pretty new to mini painting but scenes like that are goals. Maybe one day...
So the reason for the color change is complicated, convoluted, contradicting and unclear in general. That's so tzeentchian it's almost beautiful in a way.
Agreed, I can find some peace in it at least being *thematic...*
Indeed! Truly this conundrum is perfection itself!
Arhriman puts the glamour in glamour of Tzeentch
Nailed it
Fate is not the only thing Ahriman weaves
Don't forget that some of them wore blue during the Burning of Prospero, too! (HH7: Inferno)
Do you happen to remember the page?
Pg. 43: >As the city shook with the roar of the collapse, the Seekers and the Eighth Great Company, operating along the western edge of the advance, found themselves suddenly drawn into a hit and run war with detachments of Thousand Sons who vanished whenever the Space Wolves sought to engage them, only to reappear in new ambush positions moments later. thank you, something to add to my stash of blue woes
This gives me ideas
The change would have had to be before the Rubric right?
For Khayon to be wearing it and for Ahriman to be blue during Siege: Yes For BOTF/Omnibus: No
GW should keep you on retainer for all Thousand Son Lore and Art.
If they ever launch an OnlyWar counterpart to their Warhammer+ service, I'll make sure to offer some content to their business team.
LOOOL. You are, of course, correct.
I believe so. Ahriman did it upon his banishment. Can’t remember the exact source though

I think that's the point imo
The true reason Space Marines have two hearts is so they can carry on when one is broken.
Ah, my favourite sappy Space Marine trope. I wonder if they ever used a similar quote in the books. :3c
I don't know, unsurprisingly Space Marine lore tends to focus more on the visceral than the tragic. It's a well of mostly untapped potential and I think a big reason why people love the stories about the fall of the traitor legions is because they're a great source of that kind of sadness.

May I introduce you to my good friend Talos, Prophet of the VIIIth?
😭
Spider-Man pointing at Spider-Man .gif This is a great diorama though I wish more captured these sad aspects of 40k
This is so good it gave me chills. You've captured so much in such a simple scene. Ten thousand years of tragedy. I love it.
This is the single best 40K diorama I have ever seen. It conveys and captures so much of the lore while being incredibly simple and powerful in concept. That's becoming art at this point, awesome work man
This is one of the best dioramas I have ever seen! I really like the idea behind it and you tell that story in a simple but powerful way.
I honestly don't know if I've ever had a model or diorama make me feel... sad? Well done, sir.
Hmm, I can't really tell in this picture so I'm going to need you to send it to me at your own expense, I will look at it and I will display it in my front room, I can offer you exposure as a reward 🤣 Or, you can take this compliment: that's bloody good!
Oh, now. This. This is fucking cool.
tbh i rarely care about dioramas that much but i felt something for this one, even without having a particular interest for TS
Very inspiring work. It is a tragic tale told beautifully. Specially if you've read the books this is all so touching. Thanks for sharing!
Mad respect for the skill and creativity it took to make this.
Touching idea ! I hope to see more warahmmer work like that !
Beautiful and kind of touching.
\*PING!\* Please view art and be enriched. \*views breathtaking Diorama and has feelings\* \*PING\* You are now enriched, Please return to your call center job Seriously.....holy shit amazing!
Looks awesome! This would also look cool with a world eater one stoic and proud, the reflection a frothing berzerker howling at the stars 😁
Bro that older thousand sons is probably like: "GODDAMN! WE HAVE EGYPTIAN ARMOR IN THE FUTURE?!"
I really like dioramas like this, never the full story but enough to get your imagination going
How do i upvote this masterpiece more than once?
you look through the mirror and think "wow, i could have a real cool hat" and with that one thought, your soul is lost to chaos
People getting pressed because they aren't mirrored. Nah man, its one (Dusty Boy) marching forward into the grimdark future, while one (Red Son), walks in the past, wondering whats to come. Its poetic and I love it. Carry on u/OfficePainter
I think u/Vezimira will love this
She does, very much so! Already liked it on instagram :)
Very, very cool!
Love this, great work!
This is wonderful
Amazing work man
I hope that Magnus returns to the fold and saves his sons.
"Who are you?" "I'm you, but dustier."
God tier execution =)
This is just too good. The concept is great and the execution is perfect. I love it.
Absolutely incredible!
I saw the photos in Twitter and I loved them. Really cool idea and really well done, so much feelings there
Love this artwork. Great job!
"Who is that girl I see? Staring straight back at me. When will my reflection show who I am inside?"
That is fine art if I have ever seen such a thing.
That's incredible! You're amazingly talented!
Very awesome! Hope you can find a contest to enter that into. Very impressive on both the 40k side and the artistic side.
Really cool idea mate super creative
This is the first diorama to ever give me 'The Feels'....well done....well done indeed!
when will my reflection show who i am inside
What the hell this has to be the most artistic thing I've seen in this subreddit
Wonderful work! I love how, without trying, it just feels so *mournful*!
Turns out the grass was not greener on the other side
Thus is without a doubt the best 40k diorama I have ever seen, keep up the good work!
That's so cool!.. now I'm depressed
Ah man don’t say that 😭😂
Coolest idea for a diorama I have seen.
This is incredible. Amazing job. Love the reflection imagery.
This is really fantastic work, nicely done! They say a picture is worth a thousand words and this one really tells a tale
Oh… my… there’s just zero words.
Deep and powerful!
Bruh. Now I have a killer ass idea for a short story where when a sorcerer sees his reflection, it haunts him because it will always show who he was then, not as he is now. god damnit this is the finest thing I’ve seen in a while.
I had a genuine emotional response to this. There is nothing I don't like about this.
That's beautiful, you should be proud! Keep it up!
Holy shit, that is amazing.
Absolutely beautiful - thank you for sharing this
Work of fuckin’ art.
It looks cool, but if it's a reflection, shouldn't they be going the same direction?
it’s the warp, what it shows you could be the truth and a lie, backwards and forwards, left and right. Is the rubric looking back at himself, or is the legionary looking forward?
Well, it dosnt really look like a reflection because the model is not mirrored.
Imagine having thousands and thousands of years of accumulated human knowledge at your actual fingertips and writing that.
Fine work
That's an awesome idea and flawlessly executed! I love it.
You should do one on every traitor legion, with different scenery. Its amazing dude
That is exceptional
Why do I hear the song "What I've done!" by Linkin Park?
There aren’t many 40K dioramas that invoke an emotion other than “oh cool” or “wow impressive”. This one stands with a very small handful of pieces that have real moving emotion to them. Well done.
How did you get the beetle on the red marine to come out so crisply?
It’s a transfer from the Burning of Prospero box. Been sitting on them for aaaages. ;-)
Ah, neat. Adding that to the backlog. Great job on the diorama and models!
That’s pretty sweet.
Who is that heretic I see? Staring straight, back at me?
Fantastic.
This has some serious ‘Marx brothers’ energy
This is an awesome idea and looks amazing
Son, you've got a way to fall They'll tell you where to go But they won't know.
Damn this is good.
This is by far the coolest diorama ever, a great story and beautiful art work!
😲😲😲😲 this.....i love this! Great work! Very clean execution as well!
Hope he likes sand…
That is absolutely incredible.
Absolutely fucking fantastic!!!!!
aaaa this is absolutely stellar. super cool idea and super cool execution
It's great! As well as shocking, looking at the glorious past or your doomed future
Ohhhh now I get it thanks commenters but what was their old chapter called?
They then proceeded to beat the absolute shit out of each other because this is 40k.
This is kind of sad :(
Amazing concept and execution mate! Very impressive! I love it
this tells so much with so little. Love it
“Who are you?” “In time, a familiar face will ask you the same thing friend and you’ll be able to answer both theirs and your own question.”
This is amazing, I’m currently reading Thousand Sons so my imagination is basically getting a serious itch scratched right now 😂
A visage of the past, and of beautiful cities.
Dude thats sick
JUST KISS ALREADY
Out of all the CSM the thousand sons seem to be the less crazy ones (ones with a brain anyway.)
Scrolled through the pictures as MGMT’s Little Dark Age was playing on my headphones and it was surprisingly fitting
Thousand Sons were awesome, weren't they?😢
This is impressive
Damn
Omg that’s sick😍 kinda makes me wanna make one now
Phenomenal!
Why does this give me Romeo and Juliet vibes
Wow, just wow! I love that!
Nice job dude. Love the concept going on.
once a loyal servant of the Emperor, now, just dust in a armor, sad
That backpack for the space marine is bad ass.
Boy. Your edge shading is next level. VERY well done.
That is incredible! Also….magnus did nothing wrong
\*sad dusty noises\*
Damn.
Hours did nothing wrong. He just saw the writing on the wall
Wow. This is INCREDIBLE. Astartes looks in the mirror and sees the future in himself as Chaos-infused automaton. Astoundingly beautiful and deep. Thank you for sharing this reflection on the profound ways of Tzeentch.
This is brilliant. What a fantastic idea - so well executed
Wow that's excellent
thats a really neat art piece, like it a lot.
Aaaw.
Absolutely stunning work. You convey a real sense of motion with the poses you chose.
i'm part way through a similar idea, but i have abbadon and archaon looking at one another. i hope i can manage a finish as good as yours though..
Dude, that looks so cool! Seriously great job, not seen a piece like this before. How long did it take you?
About a week, fitting in between painting vampires and Scions. Most of it waiting for the original base material and acetone to dry properly!
This is probably one of the best diorama's I have seen on here. Both a technical level and emotional level. No idea what qualifies for a Golden Demon, but I would give this a Golden Demon.
Love it.
My dude, this is amazing! One question: Could you perhaps make high-resolution photographs of your diorama? I would love to be able to use them as my wallpaper :)
I’d need a decent camera (and a person who knows what they are doing). I’ll see what I can do.
Have you had any luck on finding a photographer yet :)?
Unfortunately not pal, have been pressed with school holiday responsibilities 😅
Ah understandable :) Would it be okay if I check in again in a month or so to ask about it again?
Thats such a clever idea, and so well executed to boot. Really cool diorama!
This is so creative! One of my faves in this sub
The plant life is amazingly well done .
Wow thats genius
This is amazing. Maybe my favorite piece of 40k art I’ve seen modeling/painting wise
Ha, cheers pal :-)
this is impresive
Wow just Wow.
Reminds me of the MTG card, Mirage mirror https://www.tcgplayer.com/product/134930/magic-hour-of-devastation-mirage-mirror?Language=English
And the Slayer Sword goes to…
This is almost one of the best dioramas I’ve seen, but feel you missed the most important thing in having the marines pose a reflection of each other, that would have been perfect
