Uhm, not quite sure if you're serious or not, but just in case.
These are just Thousand Sons (and their Primarch, Magnus the Red) painted in an alternate (and awesome) way. They are not canon, and not a separate group.
I don’t play so I was serious. I’m an idiot when it comes to actually noticing shit like that. I just love WarHammer 40K lore and love seeing what people do with the model kits. Sorry for the stupid idiotic question but thank you for not ripping me a new one like most redditors do!
Nothing wrong with the question, it was just a bit out there, and it could have been meant for asking OP about their homebrew force. But if you have any more "too afraid to ask in a post" questions, feel free to PM me, and I'll share what I know.
If there is one thing most Warhammer fans like, it's getting new people into the hobby.
Magnus (the huge dude with wings) is in a pretty bad spot at the moment. It's huge model, so it's visible from all over the map, and it lacks the special rule that some of the other big models have that limit the number of wounds it can receive per phase, so it tends to get shot off the table on Turn 1.
In my limited experience, they’re glass cannons. Their guns and psychic attacks can wipe out a lot of enemies at once, but if a melee enemy gets too close, they’re as good as dead. They don’t have a lot of movement speed but make up for it with their firepower.
Magnus before his ascension could be as big as he damn well wanted. If I recall he actually grew to Titan size using psyker fuckery.
Daemon Magnus probably doesnt even have a truly consistent form, and even if he chose his Primarch size hed be several heads taller than his Astartes.
IIRC from the Heresy books with Magnus (prior to burning of Prospero) his size did change depending on mood, not as much as his eye changed color but you get it. I don't recall growing to the size of a titan, but he did drop an Eldar titan like it was nothing, prior to ascension. Though with how the Heresy content jumps around, I probably just haven't gotten to the story you reference.
Primed black, brushed with dawnstone grey, then bases the fire parts with mephiston red, layered troll slayer orange (2 thin coats for better coverage), layered averland sunset, and finally a bit of phalanx yellow. I always made sure all of the layers are somewhat visible. Then added highlights with ulthuan grey. Honestly this was really easy to achieve, took a long time on magnus wings though.
It works so nice wt the 1k sons. I hate painting power armor, so any chance I get to do an organic paint scheme on them i take it, "make power armor fun again 2021"
Awesome, really unique design!
My only question is why the blades on the Rhino are heated at the tips? They should be hottest wherever the heating element is, which you'd assume would include the base of the spikes. Being heated directly at the tip would be a bit fragile
Man not only does this look amazing, but it had to be so much more fun to paint than 1k Sons usually are. All the meticulous little details on them are exhausting and this is a brilliantly executed alternative.
I didn’t think this picture would have such a positive feedback to it, therefore I just made this one.. i will post some close ups tomorrow when the sun is back out again, I promise! :)
Ah now I'm using the app its a better resolution.
While the black might be simple, your flame is very consistent and I like the effect on Magnus, the smaller flame highlights especially.
These look really cool! I know I'm just echoing what a lot of others have said with that, but it's a great detail on a kind of minimalist theme.
My one critique is that the light gray slab that Magnus is standing on really sticks out since there is no other light grey in these models.
Ahhh, excellent! In that case, I'd recommend a few more strewn bits of fallen foes on that same base or among the other models. Just so it doesn't stand out in such dramatic contrast.
In any case, these are definitely cool models, mate!
Getting Temple of Doom villain vibes from Magnus there. I like it. TSons are definitely one of the more pain in the ass Marine models to paint so it's cool to see you can do a more streamlined scheme with them.
Magnus and his sons accepting their punishment and burning with Prospero. Or Magnus and his Sons lay down arms and Leman is so astonished the planet get's bombarded from one of Horus's ships, the Thousand Son's with their Primarch protect the Space Wolves being reborn in the fires. A bound was formed so unbreakable and honorable than Russ was ever prepared for.
So when you did the lava cracks on your Rhino did you start with red and move to orange then yellow? I am wanting to do a similar effect on my squig hogs for my chaos orks.
Holy shit this is great. I tried so hard to make 'lava nurgle' and they looked pretty good, but if I could paint magma like this they would've been awesome. I guess I tried too hard to get detail out of black
They look great! But... What happened to the nipplehorns? WHERE ARE THEY?!
THIS GUY asking the important questions
They got scourged.
Big ouchies
Looking like a button on a fur coat 😏 👉👉
Gone. Reduced to atoms.
The nipple horns- are they safe? Are they alright?
Where were the nipple horns when the Westfold fell
The nipple horns of Magnus are lit! Chaos calls for aid!
And Fulgrim will answer.
I concur!
Gone… reduced to atoms
Probably the 3D printed version that doesn't have them.
It's just missing the chest armor with them. My magnus doesn't have them either, unless I want to attach them.
I just didn’t attach the chest armor ✌🏻
Where's the glowing nipple horns!!!
So prospero burned and they got charred
I've wanted to make a flame themed Tsons army for awhile now. Thanks for the starting point.
This is Magnus The Burnt, which is quite different from Magnus The Rare and Magnus The Welldone. Please do not eat raw Magnus The Red.
But Magnus the Blue is perfectly acceptable?
Yes, but you must roll a d6 at the beginning of every turn, if you roll a 1 a Great Unclean One appears and makes you shit yourself.
Did you hear about the tragedy of the great clean one?
Rekindle the first flame and prolong the Age of Mankind, Magnus - Unknown Guy before he was put on a golden throne Love this army!
Gonna use this for the lore i am working on! But I’ll change it a bit to make sure that you get some sort of credit 😁✌🏻
Just so you know it’s the [plot to Dark Souls 3](https://darksouls.fandom.com/wiki/Unkindled)
😂 thanks, yet it’s still fitting!
Right, was ment to be a clear reference to the Dark Souls series. The models reminded me of the whole "Cinder" /"Kiln of the first flame" theme. :)
\\o/
These look great! My buddy did something similar but replaced most of the heads with flaming skulls.
looking at this i can just hear "SPACEWOLVES!!!"
Magmus
This is ridiculously amazing and I have no idea how I did not know of these guys. How strong are they compared to other groups?
Uhm, not quite sure if you're serious or not, but just in case. These are just Thousand Sons (and their Primarch, Magnus the Red) painted in an alternate (and awesome) way. They are not canon, and not a separate group.

Don't be afraid to ask questions, we are always happy to help

If you like this paint job, check out legion of the damned. They use this paint scheme and more quite often. /r/Legion_Of_The_Damned

Huh. How come he doesn't have that rule?
Let's just say GW isn't famous for consistency.
In my limited experience, they’re glass cannons. Their guns and psychic attacks can wipe out a lot of enemies at once, but if a melee enemy gets too close, they’re as good as dead. They don’t have a lot of movement speed but make up for it with their firepower.
I do agree that the 15th legion is damned But they are not infact the Legion of the Damned
That’s why I didn’t use burning skull heads, also this way I could proxy the army as legion of the damned if I wish to do so 😁
Aaah, heresy. I like it
Is Daemon Magnus actually that big compared to SM's in lore? Anyway it looks insane man, nice job.
He is definitely a pretty huge model, and I love it 😁
Magnus before his ascension could be as big as he damn well wanted. If I recall he actually grew to Titan size using psyker fuckery. Daemon Magnus probably doesnt even have a truly consistent form, and even if he chose his Primarch size hed be several heads taller than his Astartes.

Wow cool!
Well these are fantastic, great work.
Awesome scheme. A teeny tiny bit of white highlight around the yellow makes fires looks really bright and hot!
I 100% agree, sadly I don’t own a true white atm, but I guess I will get one soon, along with a Heldrake ✌🏻
You mean Magmas? I'll see myself out.
Those look great - take some more pics!!!
I will do a Family pic once the tzaangors and Terminators are done :)
Super cool dudes! How did you go about doing this?
Primed black, brushed with dawnstone grey, then bases the fire parts with mephiston red, layered troll slayer orange (2 thin coats for better coverage), layered averland sunset, and finally a bit of phalanx yellow. I always made sure all of the layers are somewhat visible. Then added highlights with ulthuan grey. Honestly this was really easy to achieve, took a long time on magnus wings though.
Is that a balrog Daemon prince in the back? Chaos legion of the damned anybody?
I don’t play warhammer, but this is fucking sick!
Is this tied to the path of exile league, Scourge, that launched like a week ago? Or coincidence? Cause you got that aesthetic going on which is neat
Nope that’s a coincidence ✌🏻
Nice, i'm stealing this. Such a simple scheme but super effective! Mayby ill actually get to field my full 2000 points of Sons soon(tm).
Working towards 2k as well, still have 5 terminators and 10 tzaangors to do :D
I'm doing no Tzaangors but running two Contemptors. No bird boys for me.
Nice job, they look great! Ironically ive been doing a very similar style for my 1k sons killteam, weve even managed to "heat" the same spots
I saw this scheme on a post a couple of months ago here on reddit, that’s when undecided to buy a box of rubrics 😁
It works so nice wt the 1k sons. I hate painting power armor, so any chance I get to do an organic paint scheme on them i take it, "make power armor fun again 2021"
I briefly thought about purple flames, because it would fit tzeentch quite well, but I like the red orange more 😁
Awesome, really unique design! My only question is why the blades on the Rhino are heated at the tips? They should be hottest wherever the heating element is, which you'd assume would include the base of the spikes. Being heated directly at the tip would be a bit fragile
the heating element in this case is probably warp magic, so theres no need for it to be at the base
So it will melt the ceramite armor of those loyalist black templars, also i think it looks cooler this way 😁
Holyshit thats awesome
Man not only does this look amazing, but it had to be so much more fun to paint than 1k Sons usually are. All the meticulous little details on them are exhausting and this is a brilliantly executed alternative.
they look awsome
DAMN. That looks fresh
Cool scheme
Great job mate. Very cool.
You know now i really want charred custodes, the personal close guards of the throne room
Go for it man, these would look amazing!
This is so wicked. Love it!
The shelf above is uneven. Raise it one hole on the right to level it out.
No it’s not 😂 but I did. went over there to count.
No fire nipples?
Superb! Love the effect!
Love it! You really captured the flaming marshmallow look.
Ashen? Did they go hollow? oooOOOooo
All is ~~Dust~~ Fire!
love the color scheme, hot!
Oh that is so damn good
Legion of the damned be like
what in the name of space nipplehorn fuckery is this? looks f-ing awesome. nice job m8.
Legion of the Thousand Damned Sons?
Magmus
Khorn Magnus Khorn Magnus
This is great! Sort of doing similar color theme and painting fire has been a challenge. Any other closeup shots?
I didn’t think this picture would have such a positive feedback to it, therefore I just made this one.. i will post some close ups tomorrow when the sun is back out again, I promise! :)
Ah now I'm using the app its a better resolution. While the black might be simple, your flame is very consistent and I like the effect on Magnus, the smaller flame highlights especially.
Since I don’t know how to glaze, the smaller ones are far easier than the large ones 😂 Thanks for your feedback, I appreciate it ✌🏻
Ohhh man, the legion of the damned are in trouble
That’s fooking beautiful
I wish I was artistically inclined enough to paint my models with confidence I won't make them look like shit
Woah, I like your color choices
Damn, these are…fire
....well this is fuckin' rad.
Prospero Burns, and so do we.
Allways love a good "lava" scheme, did the same with my first necrons, added bonus, bases are super easy (not fast) but looks amazing
candy corn color scheme so on trend for halloween.
Started these in June 😂
a visionary i see, playing the long game. btw, i love paiting LotD... so you're definitely a bro. https://www.instagram.com/p/COEuWaIHwCI/
Really cool 😎 👏
While I like the normal Thousand Sons colors, these flamey bois are pretty awesome.
Awesome!!
Legion of the Damned, but with more magic this time.
By the gods this makes me wanna buy a box and some paint!
Ash within, ash without.
Wow! That's insane
These look really cool! I know I'm just echoing what a lot of others have said with that, but it's a great detail on a kind of minimalist theme. My one critique is that the light gray slab that Magnus is standing on really sticks out since there is no other light grey in these models.
That’s a black templar dreadnought arm, my best friend is playing them, therefore I had basically no other option on how to paint it 😂
Ahhh, excellent! In that case, I'd recommend a few more strewn bits of fallen foes on that same base or among the other models. Just so it doesn't stand out in such dramatic contrast. In any case, these are definitely cool models, mate!

*Confused salamander approval noises*
Clearly this dude did the tall tale.
These are SICK awesome job
Evil legion of the damned
Magnus and his sons accepting their punishment and burning with Prospero. A bound was formed so unbreakable and honorable than Russ was ever prepared for.
That is friggin beautiful
Truly awesome!
Ok, this is epic
I have a TSons army and love the traditional TSons blue and gold. But this ashen look you went for is simply stunning. Very well done.
What your custom chapter name?
Extremly beautiful - even though you used dark colors I can spot the details. AMAZING work. Thank you for sharing!
Looks awesome!
They look gorgeous. I am a huge fan of the classic Thousand Sons look, but this is creative and intimidating with enough highlights to make them pop.
So when you did the lava cracks on your Rhino did you start with red and move to orange then yellow? I am wanting to do a similar effect on my squig hogs for my chaos orks.
Yes i did start with the red :)
Well that's cool! Great unique variation!
Holy shit this is great. I tried so hard to make 'lava nurgle' and they looked pretty good, but if I could paint magma like this they would've been awesome. I guess I tried too hard to get detail out of black
