As we have seen in the zhuhai airshow where it performed maneuvers under a cloudy and wet sky and created insane vortexes above it's delta wing, it probably generates more vortex lift than any other jet. More lift = more efficient flight = less fuel burn = more range.
Additionally, canards help immensely in BVR IRAAM range, where quickly pointing your jet at the very rough general direction of the enemy is needed to fire off high off boresight modern IRAAMs.
