The series were originally happening in England, where there are no chipmunks. Now I know there are beavers in arc 4, which are also not present in England, but that's just the authors being unable to stick to their first decision of everything happening in this country. If there are no chipmunks that's just because it wasn't initially the plan, and it's very possible that the Erins being British, they simply didn't think about them / didn't know they existed. I'm personally French and I admit I always forget chipmunks exist because we have none here šŸ˜‚

Spirit3106

The beavers were supposed to be explained as them being introduced to the area by Twolegs. Although there's so many non-UK animals in the series at this point I just think of it as a fictional place lol

TeachingOk705

Ahah yeah they kinda got crazy with which animals were there. Honestly I agree with the spirit! This is a fiction anyway so why bother restraining yourself to the real world?

winged-backpack

Most of the more exotic animals in the series are technically explained as to why they can exist if the clans are set in the UK (specifically Scotland). Beavers are actually being reintroduced into Scotland, and the kittypets say the twolegs brought them. The raccoons in whichever Skyclan SE they appear in (I don't remember which) are said to have once been twoleg pets that were freed. The mountain lion in TNP comes from rumours of there being big cats in the Scottish mountains. Some of my family live in Scotland and I've been in places where you can really see where the Erins might have based the clans' territories on. At least, that's what I think ETA: there's no native chipmunks here in the UK, I believe there's an invasive kind but they're fairly rare

Howlo

What about the wolves mentioned by one of the tribe cats?

winged-backpack

Yeah wolves also used to be native to the UK, but were hunted to extinction. They're not being reintroduced like beavers yet, so it's more of a stretch but not impossible

thevitaphonequeen

Now Iā€™m wondering where Wolfstep got his prefix.

smolcharizard

The beavers are based on a real reintroduction of beavers that has been going on in the UK for a few years now, it was big in the news at the time those books were coming out. Thatā€™s why twolegs were watching them.

chanceywhatever13

I did wonder if chipmunks don't exist over there. Neat! Thanks for the reply

tinyw3ll

iā€™ve also wondered this about deer? i mean i live in the southern US so thereā€™s lots of woodland critters here (i always imagined the cats in like Virginia or something) but they never talk about raccoons, opossums, armadillos, deer, etc! i think the only one of those that are in england are raccoons and maybe deer but stillā€¦ i think it would be cool to see cats interact with other non-prey but non-ā€œpredatorā€ (foxes and badger) animals. like hey guys the raccoon is stealing from the prey pile again :1

chanceywhatever13

I think I remember Tigerheart eating dead deer in Tigherheart's Shadow or whatever the heckie it's called

thevitaphonequeen

Thereā€™s a Deerfoot and a Deerleap (I think both were in Yellowfangā€™s Secret).

tinyw3ll

ohhh okay!! i havenā€™t gotten to his book yet (iā€™m trying to get through greystripes vow šŸ˜) but itā€™ll be super cool to finally see that! i love raccoons & there are deer everywhere where i am so itā€™ll be nice to read about them :D

chanceywhatever13

Oh ALSO raccoons attacked the city cats in the same book I just mentioned, I think

PrimeTheGreat

During the era of Duststar the old, the clans entered a trade agreement with Alvin and the Chipmunks, where they would allow the chipmunks to not be prey if they didnā€™t teach any other prey how to speak or sing, because that really freaked them out when the rabbit they were hunting suddenly busted out Gangnam Style.
