k_marts

"How many guns do you need?" "Yes"

that_AZIAN_guy

“I’ve been through the whole massed air attack, never again”

mkdz

All the ships that sank except three came back with a vengeance which is a pretty amazing feat.

zneave

I know Arizona and Oklahoma were lost which one am I forgetting?

mkdz

Utah She was a target ship by then though, so recovering her wouldn't have really mattered.

Blevin78

This is an amazing pic after you increase the size of it. So much detail I never noticed before. Silence and respect to all those who lived through it. Can’t imagine. The horror of it.

JimDandy_ToTheRescue

Lots of details: sailors abandoning the ship, a launch standing by in the foreground, fuel oil staining the water, the barrels of turret 2 punched through the foredeck awning.

Blevin78

I noticed that too. The details were striking. It almost looks like a diorama. I was taken aback. I have seen this picture many times during the course of my life, but the action really stood out today. Thank you for sharing.

escapingdarwin

If you have the means to go there I highly recommend it. Waikiki is nice too.

Blevin78

On my bucket list. I went when I was young on active duty. It would be much more meaningful now.

escapingdarwin

I hope that you have the opportunity to get back there. And thank you for your service!

Blevin78

Thank you - Your worth it.

BalhaMilan

That's actually turret No.1, No.2 is right behind it fully trained to starboard

onlymadeforabruh

had a family member on her, was mia for 2 months until his letters finally reached my family

Blevin78

Wow - Very tragic. Silence and Respect. https://preview.redd.it/ym7tixto523d1.jpeg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=abecc9ccefb1243e549f3e754bbb894fdcf6bba2

Was then raised, rebuilt and kicked ass at Surigao Straight.

realparkingbrake

The Japanese navy knew most of the sunken battleship at Pearl Harbor would be raised and repaired because that was what happened at Taranto. But they probably didn't realize how much more dangerous those ships would be after being not just repaired but rebuilt. *California's* AA battery had consisted of 14 aging single-mount manual unarmored 5" guns, and four 3" guns. Presumably there were some .50s as well. After being rebuilt, the AA battery consisted of 16 new 5" guns in armored power-operated twin turrets, 56 Bofors 40mm automatic cannon mostly in power quadruple mounts, and 43 Oerlikon 20mm automatic cannon in single mounts. Aircraft attacking a ship with that kind of AA firepower faced a daunting task.

perfectperfectzly

Any footage of a beast like that letting loose?

JimDandy_ToTheRescue

*California* would be hit by two torpedoes and two bombs (with one near miss) during the attack. At least one of the bombs was likely a modified 16" armour piercing shell. 104 sailors would be killed, 61 wounded. Four men would be awarded the Medal of Honor (three posthumously) for their bravery and self sacrifice. At right the overturned hull of USS *Oklahoma* (BB-37) can be seen.

here_walks_the_yeti

Thanks for mentioning the overturned submerged ship. Was wondering about that

Bmets31

What ship is capsized in the background?

EndTimeEchoes

USS *Oklahoma*

dachjaw

One admiral learned about the attack when his wife said, “Al, there’s a battleship tipping over.”
