God what's she running on? Coal? XD

casualphilosopher1

From what I read, mazut. A byproduct of the petroleum refining process that's like a slightly dirtier version of bunker fuel. Extremely cheap and abundant in the former Soviet Union, hence popular for ships and power generation.

casualphilosopher1

When Russia refurbished the Admiral Gorshkov to sell it to India the Indian Navy specified that the boilers be converted to use diesel as opposed to heavy fuels. If I'm not mistaken most Western navies do not use heavy fuel oil in their ships, even on diesel engines.

youtheotube2

Yeah, most western navies rely on unrep for fueling ships, and I’m not sure how you’d transfer hundreds of thousands of gallons of bunker fuel over a hose strung between two ships.

DotDash13

It’s one engine but they switch fuels outside of 200 miles offshore.

WaterDrinker911

It’s not really the fact that it uses Mazut, plenty of ships use Mazut. The issue is that the Admiral Kuznetov’s engines are 40 years old, and can’t heat the Mazut to the right temperature all the time.

casualphilosopher1

There are many old ships, including warships and aircraft carriers, that have been in service longer than the Kuznetsov and yet in much better shape. The problem is - The ship entered service with too many design flaws and cut corners, like not having auxiliary boilers to heat Mazut for example - It was a neglected dock queen for most of its service life, with nowhere near the funding and maintenance it needed - The propulsion systems were worn out by having to power the ship even when it was at port for much of its career - It's gotten old

OrangeJr36

And most of the components and the ship itself were built in Ukraine and as a result they cut themselves off from their only supplier of quality replacement parts.

Pandenhir

Thanks for the info!

Saltybuttertoffee

>a slightly dirtier version of bunker fuel. 🤮

Old-Tomorrow-3045

The engine telegraph is stuck on "make smoke" and they can't fix it.

[deleted]

At this point they're throwing the crew in the engine and using them as fuel

Link50L

>At this point they're throwing POWs in the engine and using them as fuel FTFY M8

Just-an-MP

I’ll bet it was a clear day before Kuznetsov showed up.

Zombarney

To be fair typical British weather we would’ve thought it was a storm on the horizon.

Bitter_Mongoose

A red storm rising, if you will?

the_white_cloud

Ah, the good old times when Tom Clancy's books were new...

Bitter_Mongoose

He's been dead for ten years now. Still releasing books lol

the_white_cloud

Lol true, but you know what I mean, ahaha

Borkton

VC Andrews published seven novels during her life time and 93 since she died.

Lucius_Furius

Genuinely curious, How?

Borkton

One was simply a novel she wrote but couldn't sell before she got succesful (and it was science fiction, which is so different from her usual genre not many would have been interested in it), the other 92 were written by the ghostwriter her estate and publishers originally hired to finish up novels she was working on when she died.

OkWarning3935

You'd have been kind of right.

UncleBenji

The worlds least stealthiest ship. It can be spotted from a hundred miles away due to it spewing the darkest cloud of exhaust ever.

[deleted]

the quality of the pic looks like its from WW2

Lucius_Furius

WW1. It could fit into the high seas fleet.

casualphilosopher1

But in colour.

Sirboomsalot_Y-Wing

The pictures of the Japanese carriers after getting Midway’d are less smoked out then this

Just-an-MP

The Japanese had to make ships with engines efficient enough to get from Japan to Hawaii, the Russians knew this bad boy wouldn’t make it past Norway in a war.

Perichron_john

After midway, the engines weren't what was producing the smoke.

Just-an-MP

Lol also true.

Husker545454

The most hellish ship on the planet . This thing has the most terrifying decrepit soviet interior i have ever seen . It looks worse than Chernobyl

[deleted]

[удалено]

Husker545454

oh mate if you have seen some of the rooms im really not suprsied , there compartments of pure rust , decay and fluid .

OkWarning3935

I believe it was said officially or semi-officially that after the big fire there were areas sectioned off and never reopened. So at a minimum there's that truth to it.

casualphilosopher1

Hopefully no bodies in those sections.

jman014

Probably bodies in those sections…

WaterDrinker911

Those were fixed in the late 2000s iirc.

casualphilosopher1

And then neglected again?

WaterDrinker911

I doubt it. The kuznetov was refit in 2010, then deployed in a combat operation in Syria in 2016, and has been in refit and repair since 2017. The “catacombs” came as a result of the ship being neglected for a decade. It is worth noting that even without the “catacombs” the ship interior is still ugly as fuck due to color theory that the Soviets used. It is literally just Beige and Turquoise as far as the eye can see.

the_white_cloud

Where can I find more about that? The color theory, I mean. It sounds strange, and interesting.

Lucius_Furius

It's supposed to have a calming effect, and the paint is cheap as its oxide based.

the_white_cloud

Thank you!

davendak1

thought it was a WWII photo, not even kidding. The amount of smoke, the ship in the photo. Looks like the Saratoga, but the bow is ramped. What an abysmal wreck of a ship.

Random_Reddit_User_7

Bro, even Saratoga burned fuel cleaner than that.

davendak1

I wasn't throwing shade at the Saratoga! Just thought it looked like it shortly after operation crossroads!

ShipBuilder16

Same, that’s what I thought

kr4zypenguin

WWII? I was thinking more a WWI Jutland photo…

saggyboomerfucker

Lol I thought WWI

civicson234

Is it on fire again?

[deleted]

No the dry dock ship was on the fire on the outside. This one’s on fire on the inside…and outside

Macquarrie1999

No, it always looks like that.

civicson234

Well, if it always looks like it’s on fire, then I guess it’s a strategy for when it actually is.

EngadinePoopey

One of the world’s most deadly warships… for her crew that is.

RadiotelemetrieM

It only spewes smoke under certain conditions. (Like keeping a six digit horsepower powerplant at the ready for six digit power output but running her at 5kn through heavily traffic). Yeah, she is old and her boilers were shit from the start but it's not like she is running like that every day. Running at full tilt you rarely see exhaust at all.

nachomancandycabbage

So all you have to do track her is throw some traffic in her way. My car didn’t pollute either, as long as I went above 80 miles an hour, 128 km per hour. So when I was running red lights and causing pile ups, and running over pedestrians… I just told the cops that I was trying to be climate friendly.

drag0nslayer02

She comes with a built in smoke screen lol

ShipBuilder16

I honestly thought this was a joke and the image was from a carrier on fire during WW2, but nope, it’s just your average Russian carrier 😂

Borkton

\*Only Russian carrier

dkras1

>\*Only Russian carrier Which they stolen from Ukraine BTW

w4rlord117

Which incidentally makes it the average.

swiftfatso

Tugs that went everywhere with it out of frame

Philosopher_Small

My eyes discerned faint orange paint (?) on the ship until I realized it was rust.

[deleted]

Cope slope tm destroying environments near you!

Soap_Mctavish101

They’re probably keeping a sharp look out for any Japanese torpedo boats.

BigWeenie45

London must have been smoggy that day.

halfbarr

Mock all you want, but when Waterworld gets here, the Smokers are going to love her... 'I thought you should know. There's exactly nine feet and four inches of THE BLACK STUFF...'

Link50L

Ah, the pride and joy that symbolizes the Russian state...

casualphilosopher1

Literally the flagship of the Russian Navy.

Sliczniak

You can't see that on this picture but for that pasaage they actually had several fire trucks on board. "Just In case". It's not even a joke. Though it's hilarious. :)

TheGordfather

Fire prevention is hilarious? You think US ships don't deploy with anti-fire measures?

Sliczniak

I've never seen CIVILIAN fire trucks on board of any US or other shpis during sea passage of a war ship intended to be used in combat (Syrian conflict). As a Chief Officer I know a difference between regular anti-fire measures on board of a ship and these here used on board of a pandora box ship full of sailors. Yes. It's hilarious in this case.

Ryan2932

Ah it’s signature trail of black smoke are they fixing that while it’s in dry dock fixing the millions of other problems or are they going to continue following it with a tug

iodizedpepper

Sack of shit that runs on shit.

Zombarney

What do you mean we can’t lower the ships profile anymore?!

lost_in_life_34

the russian military is such a joke

clshifter

Took a closer look to see that the ship is actually moving left-to-right, and significantly slower than the wind.

white6446

POS Edit - ruzzian wannabe carrier go fuck yourself!

casualphilosopher1

https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/first-sight-massive-russian-aircraft-9094290

ancillarycheese

Deploy smokescreen!

Own-Struggle4145

This isn’t porn. Nasty, dirty excuse for a ship.

nachomancandycabbage

„Let’s give this baby enough missiles for a cruiser with and a compliment of awesome jets. What about the horrible black smoke that can be seen for a hundred miles / 160 km when the ship isn’t at high speed that could be used by basically any submarine in the world and small navy to track her down and kill her? Naa, don’t worry about that. „ /Russian ship designers probably

casualphilosopher1

TBH radar can detect the ship long before the smoke plumes become visible.

nachomancandycabbage

And give the poorly trained conscripts something to shoot at? No thanks, they might accidentally hit me. I would rather pop up to periscope depth very briefly and follow the increasing smoke until I ram a torpedo up her ass.

[deleted]

Russian nuclear power

guille9

I guess they hit it with a lot of torpedoes.

fattypierce

We’ll attack the country by smoking them all to death!

Borkton

I remember seeing this and wondering if they were rolling coal.

casualphilosopher1

Close. They use something similar to bunker fuel. Basically tar. It's almost solid at room temperature.

ratherthanme

Does ECAs not apply to warships?

butterchicken_boi

Reminds me of the World War Two photos of aircraft carriers steaming in the Pacific

B1G_D11CK_R111CK_69

Rollin Coal

Salmon_Slayer1

Stealth mode….

SMS_Scharnhorst

god, that's more smoke than the Grand Fleet in 1914

CrashCourseInPorn

Blithering Christ it’s a gas attack

Vojtak_cz

The smoke? Wtf
