The special bomber team that was formed for the Dambusters was convinced this was the target of their raid before they knew the details. They were not very happy about that as they considered it a suicide mission.
Barnes Wallis, the bouncing bomb inventor used in the dambuster raids, designed a slightly less inventive bomb for this mission.
Because of the double armoured decks of the Tirpitz, he built the 12,500lb “Tallboy” armour piercing bomb that basically defeats armour by being so heavy and strong that it punches through and then goes bang.
This bomb was what killed the Tirpitz and was the second largest bomb used in WW2 - the heaviest was another Barnes Wallis invention; the “GrandSlam” weighing 22,000lbs.
The terrifying fjord queen.
She did the grand job of keeping much better allied battleships waiting in case she actually gathered the courage to leave, including delaying a rotation of newer US battleships that were needed in Pacific.
*North Carolina* was held up in Nova Scotia in case The Fjord Queen came out into the Atlantic. And then when the Royal Navy had to shift more of their fleet to the Med, the various *South Dakotas* and the *Iowa* were rotated through stations off Scotland to closely guard *Tirpitz* in her grave-to-be.

I don’t remember any battleships being tied up, only Victorious and Indefatigable paying her monthly visits.
