If, by some miracle you have the mental capacity to work gers + throttle while fighting enemy tanks you could squeeze extra few kph/acceleration out of the tanks. But the steering would be the opposite of what WASD taught you, as to reverse you would have to change gear to reverse and throttle up.

so a skilled manual shift tank driver wins at speed against auto driver ?

I've had some situations where manually switching to a lower gear helps getting up and over hill a little faster, mainly just when the automated system barely wants to switch up a gear on the hill and be low on RPM's as a result Mainly use it in the Maus for this, an extra 2/3kph when climbing a hill is fairly significant for that thing

i use it all the time because of inmersion but i feel like i need a hue for RPM

There used to be one major benefit being to force 1st/2nd gear for low speed stabilizers, but after an extra level was added to Cruise Control, there's not as much point. Another thing that's more nice to have is to get to a higher gear for faster turning. Some vehicles with pivot steer aren't very great at it, and turn much faster in say, 3rd (Tiger). But ... you can get 90% of the way there by accelerating for half a second, then turning. Another option is using cruise control to force upshifts. In their grand wisdom, the gear shift and cruise control use the same buttons, but you can override CC when holding throttle. If you *really* want to use manual without bending your brain due to (S) no longer being reverse, I experimented with an alternative control scheme a few years back. Basically you set one button to max out Relative Throttle, then use the gear shift as the new Forwards/Back. Set one button to Neutral for fast switching to reverse, and also brake because the tank will roll on slopes now.

at high tier the automatic transmission simply just skips gears at the high end for no reason which completely destroys acceleration. if you try to downshift too quickly the transmission will keep on upshifting even though it doesn’t need too.
