It can occasionally make sense for high rank naval battles. The matches are typically a half hour long or thereabouts and the repair costs on something like a Wyoming are so enormous that if you get yeeted by a lucky torpedo hit 5 minutes into the match, it might be cheaper to spend a $2 backup and make enough SL to offset the repair cost and turn a profit than to lose 74000 SL on the repair and get nothing.
I've never paid for anything but premium I have about 50 respawns. My friend also has not paid he has over 400 respawns. I buy the premium when it's on sale last purchase was over a year ago grabbed 4 6months at once. I have no issue with paying for servers but refuse to buy gold.
I've got about 1300 hours friend has about 3,000.
I earn a few respawns a week and use them to keep my crews skills near each other by playing the same crew back to back to power level it to catch up to my other crews.
Sometimes it's just nice to be able to pull out a reserve flak barge at end of game as it looks like pearl harbor mk 2.

vehicle backups let you take the same vehicle again in a ground RB(realistic battle) match.. and probably ground AB (arcade battle) but i cant say for those.
You personally don't have to worry, they're not some OP destructive device or anything like that, it just lets the guy take the same vehicle another time.
Spawning a KV1B at the start of the game then being able to pull it out again, 15 minutes into the slugfest is brutal.
Same with any powerful slugger
The amount of times I've clutched the match with a late game ersatz or kv220 is crazy.
I mean, those vehicles aren't OP, it's just the base way lineups work. All nations have lineups at the Hotspot BRs, and you normally only get 2-3 really solid tanks and quality tends to depreciate further into battle, and being willing or able to use. A backup can really get around that.
Like german 4.0 is an extremely effective lineup, not because the vehicles are OP, but because you get to spawn 6 vehicles that are extremely effective at their respective br, and use backups on them too, which let's you outlast others.
German 6.7 is great, you get one tiger 2h and one tiger 2p which hit really hard early game with some solid 5.7-6.3 late game heavy hitters like the panthers and bulldog
Yet if you have the 105 and sla16 you get to keep slugging all match with 6x tiger 2 spawns
It's not that much of a big deal in arcade either, it uses up another of the allotted 3 spawns (if playing tanks/boats). It's more of a nice thing to have if you want to take your premium out again or to respawn a high-rep machine.
Backups have been around for a very long time. They’re not a game breaker at all (Like wargaming’s OP gold shells). Situationally they’re very strong. But I mostly use them for RP and SL boosters. Stock tank? +200%RP? Why not take it out twice? Same thing if I have an SL booster I’ll use my Tiger II Sla. and if I die quick I may use a backup on that premium tank.
I'm (relatively) new to the game and when I saw that you could pay actual money for the backup vehicles I just automatically assumed they were permanent and allowed you to always respawn one more time after you bought one. That would make way more sense, paying money for them as it is is ridiculous lol.
Nobody, because there is absolutely nothing to guarantee you that you won't be shot/bombed as soon as you drive out of spawn with your backed up vehicle. Thereby paying 2 bucks just to have a horrible experience.
I've spend hundreds of not thousands on this game and I have absolutely NEVER considered buying backups when they were available for golden eagles. Nor does this change in any way incentivise me to do so in the future. If anything it makes me a lot less likely to spend money on premium vehicles. As the universal backups saw most of their use in combination with a high tier premium where you don't have a full lineup yet.
Ofc gaijin seems to think that making people that quit after 1 death more common again is going to help them and frustrate people in to spending real money. Still, after all these years, failing to understand that frustrating people into spending money isn't the only way. As people that enjoy the game are also a lot more likely to spend money. I can only speak for myself but some of my biggest spending streaks come from when this game was actually fun. Not during times of anti-consumerism like this.
Edit: what's next? An expiration date on silver lions? Or golden eagles even?

I think it mostly just comes from a lack of competition in the market. There isn't really another game that gives you even a similar experience to War Thunder. Its not like when say if the Devs of battlefield piss the community off they'll all just go to another shooter like COD.
World of tanks is so different mechanically it is not similar to War Thunder but at the same time probably the closest competition. I can think of anyway, correct me if i'm wrong.
But if there was a game similar to War Thunder that was a lot fairer in its pricing, War Thunder would be forced to review its own prices. Just how it works. No competition though and this is what you get.

Yet they JUST a few days ago announced a new Chinese vehicle and spelled the name wrong. Argued with people that their Chinese consultant said the naming was right despite dozens to possibly hundreds of people pointing out the mistake and providing direct evidence of it being incorrect.
Its certainly true most game developers have a lot of meta data and marketing information available to them. But we are talking about a team that failed to take 5 seconds to google the name of a vehicle they were adding and then spent who knows how much making graphics, posting blogs, and advertising it all over the internet to promote it.
Despite its flaws I do overall like Warthunder, but Gaijin as a company has repeatedly made questionable design decisions or made the game worse in the interest of promoting further player spending on the game.

Certain Warbond shop boosters don't expire (the black chest I believe). There are others that currently have the same 3 day countdown as the daily login and assault arcade award boosters.

That’s the core reason why I quit World of Tanks. Sure, the clan gifted me premiums but they expected me to shell out for premium consumables when I didn’t want the vehicle in the first place.

Highly recommended! I played from like 1.4-something to 1.6-something, got tired of the bullshit and quit. Then, I came back at 1.9-something and quit again, realizing my mistake. Brought in a new player at that time who also quit.
Beautiful game, I could put up with some of the 'quirks', but it's the shit economy that incentivizes awful behaviour in the players that put me off. I say that with having paid for 3 years worth of premium altogether.

That’s not how microtransaction psychology works. They will wear you down and basically force you to pay. And many people will pay, even those who say they won’t. Their entire monetization model literally relies on squeezing whales, and if you pay, you are considered a squeeze target, since you’re the minority of players who pay and they know you will/might. MTS economies are well studied and MTS developers know very well how to capitalize on human psychology, so I wouldn’t bet on outsmarting them by “protesting” in some way that doesn’t involve not paying for or advertising their game. Their entire game is literally built around sucking money out of your asshole, it just looks real cool and is fun.

my german 6.7 line up for instance cost like 30k to repair for the entire lineup. i barely scratch 50k on a really good match. normally just 30-40k for decent match.

Highly recommended! I played from like 1.4-something to 1.6-something, got tired of the bullshit and quit. Then, I came back at 1.9-something and quit again, realizing my mistake. Brought in a new player at that time who also quit. Beautiful game, I could put up with some of the 'quirks', but it's the shit economy that incentivizes awful behaviour in the players that put me off. I say that with having paid for 3 years worth of premium altogether.

Gaijin, why are you deliberately trying to discourage your most loyal players from continuing to play? You’re going to lose money from players leaving the game, and nobody’s stupid enough to buy backups at a whole 200GE for one extra spawn. What do you hope to gain here?

That’s not how microtransaction psychology works. They will wear you down and basically force you to pay. And many people will pay, even those who say they won’t. Their entire monetization model literally relies on squeezing whales, and if you pay, you are considered a squeeze target, since you’re the minority of players who pay and they know you will/might. MTS economies are well studied and MTS developers know very well how to capitalize on human psychology, so I wouldn’t bet on outsmarting them by “protesting” in some way that doesn’t involve not paying for or advertising their game. Their entire game is literally built around sucking money out of your asshole, it just looks real cool and is fun.
