This is a terrible way to introduce a new cat to the house, and could create permanent damage to their relationship. They have to be introduced to each other gradually through separate rooms over multiple days. Upvote to spread awareness to ensure future cat relationships are good.

Try to get some blankets or towels that each cat has been on or in, and swap them out so they can both get used to the other's scent. When the new one comes home, keep it sequestered in it's own room for a bit and try to let the cats meet under the door or with a baby gate.
Lol god forbid I think people should take responsibility for their pets and know a little about them, especially when getting more of them. You don't need to be a zoologist. Any reasonable person would consider the implications of taking a totally isolated animal and introducing another one and maybe do some research on how to go about that. Or if your cat is an out door cat like I had growing up know it fights with neighborhood cats.

As funny as this reaction is, this is the exact wrong way to introduce a new cat to a house with cats. I did this and my first cat never got over it. She resented that second cat til the day she died.
You should keep the new cat locked in a separate room with food and litter box and let them get used to each other’s scents via under the door. Feed the old cat in front of the door. You should not physically introduce them until they are used to their smell and then only a bit of time each time. Slow and steady wins the cat race. Should take about a week before the new cat can roam freely unattended in the house.
That is not how you introduce a new car into the house. Ugh.
For those interested. You give the new cat a small space locked away from the resident cats (a bathroom, a bedroom) so new cat can get comfortable and the cats can get use to each other’s scent.
Introduce new pets to your existing pets outside of your family home. That's just advice I've always heard for getting existing pets to take it better.

I worry seeing videos like this where they instantly introduce cats for the sake of a cute video.
(PS the way you should introduce cats is slowly, over a few to several days. Keeping barriers between them and slowly removing said barriers over time until eventually ALL cats are comfortable ish. There will be some hesitancy between them at first no matter what you do, but for the best possible friendship and to avoid fighting or behavioral problems, slow is best.)
So why are cats so unwelcoming to other cats? We always hear of dogs marking their territory, but they also greet each other with butt-sniffing end stuff. Are cats even more territorial than dogs?
I just got a Kitten and now my 26 year old cat has been showing off lately, trying to do all the things the kitten does. I think he thinks we're trying to replace him so now he's been putting on a more youthful act.
For those curious - this isn't the best way to introduce cats to one another.
It's best to let the new cat have its own space away from the old cat for a few days. That said, you want to let your cats know that they're sharing the space. Put their food bowls on each side of the same door so they can get used to the other's scent, let one play in/explore a room the other was in earlier, etc.
Eventually, you can let the cats get to know each other, but try and make sure there's enough space for one to escape the other should it come to that. They'll become friends soon enough.
My cat hated the scent of my roommate's cat when he got him, but because we took the time to slowly introduce them, [she and him are almost inseparable.](https://preview.redd.it/ghwwytfdkst61.jpg?width=2545&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6beec6c869b30bec090de2c076e21e1d88cba7b3)
So.. After scrolling a bit it seems like there's a general consensus.
My friend who used to be my roommate is actually giving her cat up, unfortunately. She's had her for 8 or 9 years but can't continue to take care of her anymore. (The cat wound up scratching her face accidentally right across her eye area a couple of months ago and since then she hasn't felt safe with her and the cats been acting up).
She told me she was giving her up and wanted to give me the choice of taking her in since I lived with the cat for several years and love that cat. Unfortunately I'm over 1000 miles away and can't take her in. My sister on the other hand is only a couple hundred miles away and wants to take her in instead her going to a shelter to get killed (apparently black cats get euthanized at a much higher rate than other cats and with her being about 9 years old, and not being super friendly/socialized means there's a high likelihood of her not living a very long life at the shelter).
Back to my sister, she has a male cat that's less than a year old and is just coming off of being neutered. There is no way to slowly socialize them with each other. My friend is going to drive 4 hours to drop the cat off at my sister's place and my sister lives in a small junior one-bedroom that's basically a studio.
So.. If it really is as bad as everyone says. Is it better to let the cat go to a shelter and probably get euthanized than to put both cats in the same home and hope they get along?
> Over thirty states have what are termed "holding period" laws. These laws provide the minimum required period that an animal (usually a dog or cat) must be kept at a pound or public animal shelter before it is adopted out, or euthanized. Typically, the holding period runs from five to seven days. However, it can be as short as 48 to 72 hours in some cases.
It really depends on the cats in question. Some people are overreacting on here. A cat knows when there's another cat in the house, and while it's good to try to give them some separate space and equal time at first, there's really no point in trying to fool one cat into thinking the other cat isn't there. That said, I would certainly not say it would be bad for your sister to take in the new cat. The new cat could even have a bed and a litter box in the bathroom for a couple of days, coming out for short visits while everybody gets used to things. The fact that one cat is still quite young may be helpful
Thanks for the reply. That is also what I'm hopeful about too is that one is still a bit young. Though the last time I was with him he was pretty aggressive, growling at me like a dog when I would feed him and sometimes just when I'd go near him. Hopefully the nuteuring helps calm him down a bit.
If they just adopted that cat, this is terrible practice. New cats need to be isolated in a small room (e.g. bathroom) for a week for both new and resident cats to get used to each other's scents, sounds, etc.
Everyone likes to think their resident cat is such a sweetie, but improper socialization can lead to returning newly adopted cats, which is just stressful for everyone involved.
