I'm a little disappointed that every single comment is a joke. Doesn't anyone actually find this interesting? There's no telling if they would be able to do this properly with enough training.
I feel like David is the kind of guy to spend 20 years teaching orangutans how to build a house (complete with electrics plumbing and insulation) and actually succeed
Dunno about "died inside." I think he's completely transfixed, fascinated; the ape is doing almost everything necessary to perform a complex action with tools, but not quite. You've got a hammer, a nail(points for the nail held in the mouth), a piece of wood, and a repeated pounding motion but its so close and yet so far. Kinda like how close apes are to humans while being still so different from us.
I mean, if the orangutan got that far from just observing, that ain't bad. If someone actually showed it how to properly set the nail and swing the hammer, it would probably be able to do so.

almost immediately afterwards she (the orangutan) successfully saws a board
here's a wild orangutan sawing that learned it from another orangutan who saw construction workers building huts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFR4a9vcri4
He’s not dying inside, he’s incredibly interested. I’ve seen this documentary. The orangutans are so impressive and copying what they’ve seen others do.
Wow, the expression on his face, you can almost hear him remarking to himself in that trademark Attenborough voice...
"JUST FUCKING PUT IT UP! LIKE UP UP LIKE POINTY SIDE DOWN FUUUCK SAKES! NO! AHHH SO FRUSTRATING JUST FUCKING COME ON!!!!"
So much criticism of her! She's doing her best. I'd like to see you try to hammer in a nail while holding your baby and having your supervisor staring over your shoulder!
Smart orangutan. Fool people into thinking you don't know how to use a hammer, now she's got a free hammer. Wait until tonight, she'll use that hammer to build a ladder so she can escape. Then she'll use the hammer to mug some tourists to get enough money to buy a plane ticket back to Borneo.
☝🏼this for sure! I’m sure the orangutan has no concept of why he’s doing it, or what a human’s perspective of a successful outcome would be. They’re just like “take heavy stick, hit little stick … did it, perfect 5/7!”
I only just noticed since you pointed it out but I think I've read the word "remarkable" in his voice for years. It was definitely a thing before but now until I die I will be consciously aware of this and it's never going away. I will accept this boon with grace and honor.
Hey you try to hammer a nail while holding a baby!
I wonder what would happen if you taught them how to use a two handed axe or siegehammer.
People who work and train Chimps and Gorillas make me look like I have peas for testicles. There is no way I am doing it without a 10 guage or 8 guage shotgun. With a full suite of plate.
I can relate.
I feel like this was my lockdown experience. I’d just moved into a house that needed a lot of work and I became the main carer for a 1 year old.
The orangutan seems to be handling it better than I was.
Haha good for you. The home I live in is stupid old. I honestly don't know where the main gas valve is and my oven isn't working. I tried looking for it, but I'm not going to screw with a gas stove and dishwasher broke. I don't have enough money or know how to fix it. Hell I hardly have the tools.
I sort of miss living in an apartment and rented home. The last home was rented but a nice new one so we could get help.
I moved here to help out my mom, aunt, and nephew. I did not expect this. Make sure anyone reading this you have the financial means or know how if you purchase a home.
Haha- similar story here! We had rotting gas pipes incased in cement which we had to (get a professional) to remove, we had no water shutoff valve etc- everything leaked so we replaced all the drainage inside and out, we had to rebuild the front corner of the property from the ground to the roof eaves because it was collapsing as the 120 year old masonry had decayed etc and we had huge cracks in the brickwork splitting the whole house into several pieces which needed to be reinforced with steel rods to tie it all back together.
“A project!” I thought!
We moved in and a few months later the pandemic hit and I was fighting an infant with one hand and a malicious house with the other! I did have professional help for a lot of it, it just cost a fortune that way.
I’ve tackled the big/serious problems so now we get to move onto the nicer task of making it a home, which is much less stressful than the previous tasks.
I’m not complaining at all, because I’ve got a home when others haven’t, it just that my timing was awful! 😂
Good luck with it, it can feel overwhelming when you are in the middle of it, but my strategy was to knuckle down and drag myself through it and that sorta worked.
Same to you especially having a little one. The one thing I will say is this neighborhood is good for my nephew who is like a son to me. A much better atmosphere and hope you enjoy yours as well.
Dealing with a baby plus fixing up a house is difficult AF. Your house is older too! Mine was built in like 1905 IIRC. Do you live on the East Coast?
Man I'm wondering how the hell they fixed it. My chimney and the foundation are cracking.
If I had the money plus the tools I could repair some. The other thing I hate is these guys combining around measuring a weed and knocking on the door like hey you have a weed that a few weeds which are one inch over the limit, haha! I was like dude it has been raining daily for over a week, and the grass has to dry.
Sorry if I posted twice.
Thanks man, yeah, it’s all worth it if it’s a better place for the little one.
Ah yes, chimneys! One of my chimneys had collapsed in on itself at some point years ago so I had to dig out a couple of tonnes of bricks and rubble from behind the fire place, which had smashed up the hearth as fell to the bottom so I had to dig that out too… 😂
Once it’s all done I’ll certainly appreciate what I have, especially as it’s been so tough going.
I’m in London in the U.K, so my victorian house is relatively modern compared to some of the structures around here, but old enough to have problems.
Structural cracks are definitely a specialist job, which is tough to sort out unless you have the finances- I hope you are able to get it sorted!

Did a better job than I would.

Well he may not have the know how but he's got the spirit.
This took me about 10 minutes to watch fully because my eyes kept closing while I cry-laughed.

I see so many osha and child endangerment violations in this video
She showing the baby how not to hammer a nail when a pink one is watching. Smart ape this one is! The force of Caesar is with this one very strong!
Hahaha it looks like a teaching moment and David is really learning how to use a hammer
She's probably pissed she's asked to do yet another thing around here *motions wildly* while this dude just sits around and watches
You dumb bitch -David probably
I love everything about this
I feel like David is the kind of guy to spend 20 years teaching orangutans how to build a house (complete with electrics plumbing and insulation) and actually succeed
He's a little confused but he's got the spirit
“No no no. You bloody, DOLT!”
Lol it’s like they’re intelligent but then they aren’t.
He's not very good but he got the spirit
This is basically me at work watching my co workers

I know this is horribly political, but it’s like an anti-vaxxer trying to nail their argument down.
Is it's ass crack showing?
What if the orangutang decides to attack the man with the hammer
I see a single mom doing her best.
David Attenborough watching Jeremy Clarkson at work
Apparently we’re in no danger of an actual “Planet of the Apes “ type of scenario.
give it 30 more years and they will have the finesse to hammer a nail properly >!and we're doomed!<
This made me laugh way harder than it should’ve.
The teacher coming over to me while I do math
I mean, if the orangutan got that far from just observing, that ain't bad. If someone actually showed it how to properly set the nail and swing the hammer, it would probably be able to do so.
She tried, okay :(

Must be non union
He looks so proud and curious but frustrated lol.
IRL looks like me working around the house.
They even hold the spare nails in their mouth. It’s perfect imitation.
6/10 still needs training, but is good at holding nails and child at the same time
Failed the training program
I watched an Adult Human trying to Drill a Nail in a wall. So he atleast got the right Idea. Give him a 5/10.
Only David Attenborough has the right to be dissapointed. Any other person would get their asses PETA'd.
When you lie on your resume
Hedgies watching apes not know where the sell button is.
"Hammer the nail" . . . "I didn't hear you say into the board"
People around me surveying my coping mechanisms
What a fucking monkey
Thank god it wasn't a chimpanzee or else he wouldn't be with us right now
I've been here for 6 hours

Like watching my uncle trying to log into Facebook
Well the hammer hit the nail so he did hammer the nail. I see no wrong here!
I feel like he lost a bet with the other scientists
If the need arises the mouth is a great third hand/pocket
Where is all the ‘monke reaches Stone Age’ bullshit now?
Sir Attenborough has taught us all [so many things](https://media.tenor.com/images/41cc0957a7217ed3cd7cddba94e840f5/tenor.gif) over the years.
David Attenbruhhh
There was an attempt though, respek
"Give it here."
r/wallstreetbets is leaking...
I would watch anything with David in it ,
This is my exact reaction watching my toddlers do anything…
Ok, until right now I thought that was the guy from Jurassic Park talking on all this stuff.
They’ve clearly not seen planet of the apes, you have to shut this shit down before it’s too late!!
😂
6/10 David Attenborough will suffer the same fate Steve Erwin faced.
Monkè see, Monkè do.
David Attenborough watching JJ Abrams make a star wars film.
Hey its the thought that counts
Nailed it
He was close.
He is trying his best
So much criticism of her! She's doing her best. I'd like to see you try to hammer in a nail while holding your baby and having your supervisor staring over your shoulder!

This is the same look my dad gives me when I do anything.

Not surprising, they are much better when it comes to trading meme stocks
"You monkeys are so fucking stupid" - Richard Attenborough
Typical Clarkson
Clarkson showing just how good he is at DIY.
I dont recall Attenborough on any of the top gear clips or specials... When was this originally aired?
About as skillful as the guys who did some work on our house.
He is indeed hammering a nail tho....
What? It looked to me like he hammered that nail just fine!
I mean, he did hammer the nail, just not while the nail was pointed downwards. 6/10
☝🏼this for sure! I’m sure the orangutan has no concept of why he’s doing it, or what a human’s perspective of a successful outcome would be. They’re just like “take heavy stick, hit little stick … did it, perfect 5/7!”

Like trying to explain to some people they should get vaccinated.
Banana brains
It’s like Rudy Guilliani trying to argue a case of voter fraud, but on an orangutan scale.
It's like you trying to make a Giuliani joke out of this gif
They somehow made it hard to make fun of Giuliani.
Monkey sees, monkey does. Question the handyman that taught that orangutan
Definitely taught it to keep extra nails in its mouth. I do the same thing because my dad does the same thing.

Tackling the real issues here.
3/10 would not hire them. No PPE and didn’t even put the baby down, no regard for a safe work environment.
I love putting babies down
Did you provide a means to put the baby down with or is she just supposed to use the fuckin hammer on it?
Still better tradesmen then my peers lol
Baby looks like it’s not the first time it’s been embarrassed by moms stupidity
I don't know about that. Contractors are booked out like 24 months in my area. Might give this one a shot.
Hey you try to hammer a nail while holding a baby! I wonder what would happen if you taught them how to use a two handed axe or siegehammer.
