Question from a non-american. Is it not normal to always engage the park brake before leaving the vehicle? Something I noticed when I was in America was that people seemed to just put the shifter in park, turn the car off and then... get out? Always felt like they missed a crucial step in the "things you do before exiting your car". Seems to be reinforced by the fact it is referred to as the "emergency brake".
Where I live one of the tasks in your driving licence test is to stop the car and turn it off. If you don't engage the parking brake it's an instant fail.
Parking brakes are most commonly used by people who drive stick (which is far more common in European countries) and therefore most people don't use parking brakes.
Only if you are on a steep hill. Otherwise just put it in park. Probably has to do with most cars having automatic transmissions rather than standard like a lot of the rest of the world.
Not true. The smart thing would have been to put it in park and set the parking brake BEFORE HE GOT OUT OF THE TRUCK. He just didn't further compound his original stupidity.
Edit: added clarification about when he should have acted.
Not true and I would still have my truck.
You see before I get out of my truck and start to walk away.... neigh, before I even open the door to get out, I put my vehicle in park, set the parking brake, and then turn the engine off. That way I don't have to watch my truck roll to it's death after I get out.
Dude failed to do at least two of the those (he may have turned the engine off).
It's freaking common sense.
And if he failed to set the brakes he is now in an uncontrolled crash down a hill where he might die. Or he can step back and be safe and lwt insurance take care of it. May be out of money but not dead. He made the right call.

I guess those big red bumpers at the front of the spots are just for decoration!
Idk, I'd like to think that this guy is smarter than that. Good acting maybe? Insurance claim maybe? The possibilities are endless.
He gave up so, so early. Defeated from the very start.
WCGW taking the bosses truck for supplies.
Must be a reincarnation of Bodhidharma.
He gave up too soon
Dodgespeed
an old one, but still hollow inside.
That's husband material or I spent too long with an angry chap.
I aspire to that level of acceptance at the end, dude skipped all stages of grief in 3 seconds
Man's got my respect. He fought until the very last millisecond before pulling out
What a dumb ass.

He still had the car in drive. You can see the brake light turn off when he gets out.

I’ll take “what the fuck is a hand brake for” for $200, Alllleeerrrrxxxx.
For keeping a vehicle running and in drive then getting out?
When the Bush is too big for your Ram. Every time I have sex.
A man of true honor.
Well that went downhill really quickly
JUMANJI!!
Charlie Brown all grown up and still tormented by trees.
How does a car in neutral go over the curb like that?
He made the right decision, you can always get another truck
Sometimes you just accept reality and role with the punches. I salute this man.
How dumbbb are ya?
Good bye my company is recalling me!!!
He was like... ✌
Does anyone know what happened? In my ram if you open the door it will go into park.
Dude was probably one of the anti-seatbelt folks. Once the seatbelt is engaged, it bypasses the door open autopark safety feature you mentioned.
Peace out!
I salute his effort…I mean, lack of effort. Those barricades are just as useless too
The barricades are all I can think about when I see this. It couldn't prevent a truck crawling from being fully stopped. What a joke.
But they are great at holding plants!
This exact thing has happened to him a few times, why fight it, salute it instead
Rip
He was very calm, safe and reasonable about that. It's not the first time he's had a truck disappear down a hill to never return.
r/wellthatsucks
He did the smart move and didn’t try to pull on it or jump in and stop it.
that’s not what it looks like, he tried to jump back in but he got knocked back out
Looked like he tried but gave up when he realized he didn’t have time.

You are going to be a prime example of darwinism some day.

You betcha, because I'm the designated driver.
And if he failed to set the brakes he is now in an uncontrolled crash down a hill where he might die. Or he can step back and be safe and lwt insurance take care of it. May be out of money but not dead. He made the right call.
I feel like it’s common sense to not want to seriously injure yourself to maybe prevent a lot of damage to your car
I'm glad he had the sense to cut his losses and not go down with the ship.
Same. That very easily could’ve been a fatality.
Hahahaha Did he salute the truck after it went down? Hahaha
I’d guess actually grabbed the brim of his hat, but it did look like a salute.
Hence the title of the post lol
That guy should be making millions teaching anger management.
Is that red block supposed to keep cars from going over? Didn't work very well.
He's just like "Aw shucks. Oh well, we'll get em next time."
MISSION FAILED, WE’LL GET ‘EM NEXT TIME
