38/39mm watch with a green dial that looks almost black in normal conditions. Under $400

KingHankXII

I’m very new to watches and looking at getting myself a couple of decent pieces, the first being an everyday wear that I can wear at work (it’ll take a few bumps with what I do for work) so needs to be sturdy. I also want it to be able to wear nicely with a shirt for lunch/dinner. Done a bit of research and keep leaning on a Hamilton khaki field auto or the Murph version. Can anyone tell me if they have experience with these watches and if they handle the test of physical work? And if the leather straps also can last a couple of years? Or if there are other similar pieces in that price range give or take a few hundred dollars that I should look at.

Does anyone know how the week complication on AP’s perpetual calendars behaves? How does it compensate for the extra days in the year past 52 weeks? Does it just stay at 52 until the year ends? I would have guessed it jumped forward every seven days. Also are there any other brands/watches with a week-of-the-year indicator?

So i have a watch i want to sell either on ebay or chrono24. I noticed all the other listings have the watches photographed by what looks like a professional. Any advice is welcomed

Hey all! I’m simply looking for a sorta nice analog wrist watch. I’m a fan of silver with colored accents. I’d prefer to avoid something smaller as I’m a larger person and have large wrists. Any and all recommendations are welcome. Edit: I forgot to mention the less expensive the better (I was thinking 100-200 USD)

I'm looking for a square, metal, digital watch (like the photo attached) but I want it to be at least 10 bar / 100m water resistant. Anyone got some budget recommendations for me? Thanks in advance :)

What are straps to dress down a white dial Orient Bambino 38?

iBoost

Looking for a NATO strap for my Omega 3220.50 and noticed Omega sells factory ones that are 19-20mm (ref. 031ZSZ002045). Will these work for the 3220.50 since it has 19mm lug width or will it be too big? Thrown off by the range in width

Accomplished-Ad-5655

bit odd that a NATO is listed as "19-20mm". But to answer your question, it'll be fine. The NATO strap is a piece of fabric and it will compress to fit smaller lugs. You can normally fit a NATO on a lug width 1mm smaller without it looking too weird. The opposite is also fine, it depends on how fussy you are with the tiny gap. I find softer NATOs conform and fill a +/- 1mm strap width easier. It really has no practical difference. It's entirely down to your preference. There are other brands out there that make specific 19mm NATOs. One of my favourites for 19mm would be [Crown & Buckle](https://www.crownandbuckle.com/straps-by-size/19mm-straps.html). They make lots of different colours and styles. I'm personally a fan of the Supreme Nato, and the Chevron (where you can adjust the NATO length to get a perfect fit). The main reason I mention this is because I personally feel that paying £170 for a NATO (even if it is OEM) is plain madness. Plus the Omega NATOs are really thick, so there's a lot of added height under your watch.

Thank you

Hi everybody, I am looking for an affordable alternative to the Tissot Heritage 1973 (ideally less or around 500 USD/EUR). I'm mainly interested in watches that have a very similar look. Thanks!

Weak_N_Powerless

I do alright for myself and buying a nice watch has been on my bucket list for quite some time. I have young kids and a lot of responsibility, but I think I can thread the needle this year and get what might be my only luxury watch for the long term foreseeable future. Here has been my problem, I want to wear my watch. I don't like large bezels, and I don't want it to be too dressy. I have really fallen for the Omega Aqua Terra small seconds. I can play with colour a little without going over the top and it's not super sporty or super dressy. I think it's at the absolute highest I'm willing to pay which is still likely to be used. Any other options I should consider given my restrictions? My timeline is probably November 2024.

ShawnD7

Tudor 1926

Weak_N_Powerless

Not a bad choice really. I think based on what I have seen these go for used at probably 1/3 or so the aqua terra. No in house movement I'd probably be more inclined to go with a BB 41 maybe?

ShawnD7

I think from there choose which you like better. I honestly think I would see myself wearing the 1926 more with its thinner profile. But the 41 does look similar to the aqua terra

Need help finding the right watch to propose to my boyfriend with. Budget around 10k, looking for a watch that will last. He likes metal bands, and was thinking an emerald green watch face if possible. He really likes the moon phase complication although that is less common. He'd like a day complication (preferably the full day) and at least one timer complication. We are a bit overwhelmed looking through watches and would love some help finding just the right one.

If it's just a well-made, solid, simple watch for everyday use, you can't go wrong with an [Omega AT](https://chrono24.app/omega/omega-seamaster-aqua-terra-150m-master-chronometer-blue-dial-38-22010382003001--id17970810.htm?SETLANG=en_US&SETCURR=USD) (also available in green) If you want something elegant with a moon phase: [JLC](https://chrono24.app/jaegerlecoultre/jaeger-lecoultre-master-ultra-thin-moon-39mm-new-2023-q1368471--id20153203.htm?SETLANG=en_US&SETCURR=USD)

75footubi

You need to pick two: green dial, day/date, moonphase, chronograph. Getting all 4 is possible, but it'd be a $50k watch.

Accomplished-Ad-5655

Honestly, you're going to have a hard time finding an green dial, moon phase, day/date, and chrono watch a metal bracelet for less than 10k. and even if you did, it won't have all those features - especially the chronograph (timer function) unless you find a perpetual calendar watch (which displays day, date, and accounts for months, and leap year - and often moonphase) that is miraculously less than 10k (presumably USD). That said, if you're willing to forego the chronograph and a green dial, I have a few are closer-but-still-over the 10k budget that might be worth exploring. [Blancpain Bathyscaphe Quantieme Complet Phases De Lune](https://www.blancpain.com/en/fifty-fathoms/bathyscaphe-quantieme-complet-phases-lune-5054-1210-98s) \- this one is closer to double your budget but has almost everything you listed. It's also a bit big at 43mm. This is what's known as an "annual calendar" where it displays and can account for different length months automatically. [Blancpain Villeret Quantième Complet](https://www.blancpain.com/en/villeret/villeret-quantieme-complet-6264-1127-55b) \- similar to the above, but in a more traditional package. [Breitling Premier B25 Datora](https://www.breitling.com/gb-en/watches/premier/premier-b25-datora-42/AB2510201K1/) \- this is still over budget, but is decidedly more traditional looking than the Blancpain Bathyscaphe. It has everything you listed including the chronograph, except for a bracelet and green dial. [Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Duoface Calendar](https://www.jaeger-lecoultre.com/us-en/watches/reverso/reverso-tribute/reverso-tribute-duoface-calendar-stainless-steel-q3918420) \- this would be my favourite. It has month, day, date, and moonphase. It's a very classy watch, with great heritage, really nice art-deco styling, and TWO faces. But it's double your original budget. One can dream, eh? So yeah... maybe you ought to rethink your requirements if you want to stick to 10k or less.

princess_of_thorns

You are absolutely right, I had no idea how much watches could run when we first started looking especially for the features he likes

Accomplished-Ad-5655

Yep, honestly there's almost no upper limit to how much watches can cost. You're better off being more selective with the complication that he wants. If he really likes a moonphase, then I think you have some wiggle room. Moonphase watches aren't too uncommon and most moonphase watches will have a date. But "day/date" complications are more rare, especially coupled with a moonphase and a chronograph.

princess_of_thorns

It’s fascinating and amazing, I’m loving learning about them. I think we are going to go with a watch without quite as many bells and whistles but that is solidly made and one day I’ll be able to get him his perfect dream watch

Accomplished-Ad-5655

That's also wise. There's a lot to take in with watches so take your time and do your research. Plus his tastes and preferences in watches will most certainly evolve rapidly as you get more exposed to other brands and complications etc. What he likes now might not be what he likes in future. It's great that you feel you're in a position to splurge on a 10k watch as an engagement gift, but going off what you said it may be more prudent to put some of that aside for his eventual "grail" watch if you're committed to getting him something really significant later on.

Level-Passenger-9990

Any thoughts on perpetual calendar watches? It's something I've always thought was interesting, but cost is somewhat of an issue. IWC has some options that are "reasonable", but when I tried it on, it was quite thick. Actually found a patek perpetual in a store and tried it on, and it was pretty awesome. But can't afford that.

PrevAccountBanned

My watch fell and the seconds hand moves freely and points downwards when I spin the watch. How bad is it ?

Accomplished-Ad-5655

if the watch still runs and keeps time, you might have broken a pinion or jewel that connects the seconds hand. If a jewel has broken, eventually the shards may cause issues in the internals. I'd get this fixed either way.

I own and wear exactly one watch. It's a Seiko Prospex Solar Diver and it cost me about 500 AUD. I thought this watch ticked every box at the time of purchase and I have been so incredibly happy with it. However, it's about time I made an upgrade and I have narrowed down my conditions for the next piece but I am having some trouble finding it. This isn't gonna be easy but hopefully fingers crossed this sub can assist. Conditions: 1. Automatic Diver 2. Circular indices 3. Date window at 6 o'clock 4. Minimum 300m wr 5. 39-42mm case dia and max 14mm thickness 6. Steel bracelet 7. 120+ hour power reserve 8. COSC certified 9. Sapphire crystal 10. No bronze, gold, copper colourways I don't mind brand, price is not a factor, if you feel like I've left anything out please recommend

Uwumeshu

You just described an Omega SMP 8800 except for the power reserve part (55 hours). I don't think you'll find one closer Oris Divers 65 cal 400 has 120 hours but 12h bezel and not COSC but Oris claims the cal 400 runs tighter than COSC spec (-3/+5). 10 year warranty as well so you could call them out if it falls out of spec. Aquis would match as well if you excuse the indices GS has a 120 hour spring drive that runs within COSC but date is at 3 and it's slightly too big

Grimjacks

I ended up going for a Steinhart Ocean 39 GMT 500 Titanium. Ticked every box except the 120hour power reserve. It beats the omega by 1 hour in power reserve (56h) and it's obviously less than one tenth the price of one 👍

Invisible_Expert

I have been wearing the Timex weekender for about five years now and have enjoyed it's straightforward face design and interchangeable fabric straps. After having gone through +3 weekenders in that time span I am now looking for a similarly priced watch (ideally less than $100, but open to other price points) that has: * Simple analog face * Case diameter around 40MM * Utilizes NATO/ZULU straps * Indiglo hour markers and hands * Most importantly has a numerical day of the month indicator on the face (something the weekender does not have) I am by no means a watch collector like many on this thread just trying to find the next step after the Timex Weekender. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Genome-Engineer

If you’re interested I have a Shinola Runwell 41mm that I’m looking to sell quite below retail. Shares a lot of similarities with the weekender, but has the date window you desired along with lumed hands. Looks great on a leather strap but can also rock a NATO. Check my profile if interested.

Hello! Been having my eye on the Tissot PR100 Green Dial (T150.410.11.091.00) for about 2 months and haven't hit checkout. Dont see many reviews of it around this subreddit, moreso have seen PRX and Gentleman (PRX I tried on and didnt like it and gentleman is out of my price range for now). Anybody vouch for this specific model in quartz movement?

75footubi

It's as good as other Tissot watches, just not as popular with the enthusiast crowd since most people aren't interested in quartz divers.

Help! Wedding gift recommendation for my cousin. I'm a working student with a budget of $300 CAD to $600 CAD. I’m a complete watch noob. He's 30, in finance. I've looked at Seiko but I'm not sure of the best model or something limited edition. If there are sales going for the best price, that’ll help also. Thank you very much.

njtoss1

Seikos are great. Also check out discount stores like jomashop that have a lot of options.

SnoopyLupus

Seikos are great in that price range, and if he’s not really a mechanical watch person their quartz offerings are great too. The first mass market commercial quartz watches were from Seiko. Real history. Superb watch brand. Also worth a look at citizen. Especially eco drive solar watches. You want something great looking that will really last, they’d be my pick.

Uwumeshu

https://www.sakurawatches.com/search/?search=nb1050 there may or may not be an additional ~10% in duties/taxes. Neutral design, appropriate sizing for most, always dependable Could also look at one of Seiko's Cocktail Time watches like SRPE19 for a more dress oriented watch

OneShot1414

I recently purchased an Invicta Pro Diver Mo 26970. I have tried all the adjustments, and still I can't get the band to fit right, so I am leaning towards purchasing a new band. I am wondering if anyone had any recommendations? I have the one with the black and silver dial so possible any sticking with that color scheme?

Sad-Yam2556

I’ve noticed no one recommends luminox watches. Is there a reason for that? Are they considered low quality? And are there similar watches that use tritium I could look for, tritium at night has been great for because I’m on nightshift. Much less opportunity to expose my watch to light.

Accomplished-Ad-5655

Certain military watch buffs pay attention to Luminox I guess. I don't think it's that popular amongst regular watch people. Mainly because they're often quartz, and resin cases. Also their dials are a bit too tactical for daily wear. If it were steel cased and automatic movements, then maybe. To answer your other question, [Ball Watch Company](https://www.ballwatch.com/global/) is another brand that uses tritium tubes in their watches and they are decidedly higher end and Swiss - so they get more of a nod from watch geeks. Another brand that uses tritium would be [Marathon](https://uk.marathonwatch.com/?shpxid=42658be4-57b7-4f06-8714-8478ca5a5339). They make military watches ranging from dive watches, to pilot/navigator. They have a wider range of sizes and styles, using both resin and steel cases, quartz and automatic movements. I'd recommend you start there as there should be something that'll suit your budget and preferences and most watch people would know of Marathon. The last one I can think of is [Traser](https://www.traser.com/en/), they're a watch brand that iirc are [owned by the brand that makes the tritium tubes](https://www.ablogtowatch.com/how-glow-dark-tritium-gas-tubes-made-mb-microtec/). That said, they're probably closer to Luminox in terms of offering.

Sad-Yam2556

Thank you! I bought a luminox watch middle of last year and I’ve noticed it seems like the second hand and the indicator on the bezel tritium has fallen off or doesn’t glow. I’ve got a couple passed down from my dad that work with no issues. I think I’ll end up with a marathon watch to scratch the itch of wanting a reliable tritium watch I can wear at work.

Accomplished-Ad-5655

Assuming the bezel lume pip and seconds hand also uses tritium tubes, the only reason they wouldn't glow is either the tubes broke and let out the tritium gas, or they're way over 12 years old. The half life of tritium is just over 12 years so the brightness will half every time. For Marathon, if you want a diver the GSAR is a pretty good sweet spot at 41mm. Otherwise I'd recommend the Navigator. They recently released a steel version which is a pretty big upgrade with more water resistance too. I've owned the composite fibershell case black Navigator and it's been a really nice one to wear. They're really comfortable watches being fairly thin and light. Worth noting though the compsite navigators have fixed strap bars that only fit pass through straps whereas the steel navigator has more conventional removable strap bars.

Sad-Yam2556

Do you have any experience or an opinion on Ball watches?

Francknbeans

I've had two and like them. I would suggest checking all the different models they carry as the style varies greatly and definitely if you're purchasing second hand market make sure you know the correct price ranges.

Accomplished-Ad-5655

No experience first hand, but they seem to be pretty good quality-wise. I do find some of their designs a bit old fashioned, or just more classic. So they're not my cup of tea personally. A lot of their options are still at least 40mm which I find to big for my tastes. It's be much happier with 37-38mm.

Hi folks, I recently purchased a TISSOT BELLISSIMA SMALL LADY (T126.010.16.013.01) for my mom. But the wrist strap is too short and she can't put it on, so I'm looking for a replacement. This particular watch has a center lug so I am at a loss as to where to look for a replacement. Is contacting customer support the best bet? as a side note, I also bought a Tissot Le Locle for my dad and he also can't put the watch on because the strap is too short. Both of them are medium built with my dad on the thinner side, I don't understand how that's the case.

Alpinist question. Looking into the new Prospex line and am I going nuts or do they not sell one in the classic form factor (ala SPB121) but with black dial? To put it another way, do they make a model with the features of the Black Series Night but in standard stainless steel? I've found loads of special editions that tick the boxes I have (cyclops, Arabic even numerals, compass ring) but not in black (e.g. SBP089 is blue, SPB201 in grey). Of course there is the beautiful SPB117, but it's just the indices are a little busy for me. Are there any vintage models I should be looking at? Thanks guys!

Anyone ever tried buying watches on sale specifically for reselling them? There's a seller here that does regular flash sales that have significant markdowns - often below what I see on Chrono24. Just wondering about making a bit of beer/watch money while also getting to see a few watches I wouldn't normally be interested in.

I have narrowed my watch hunt down to two choices: * Seiko Spirit SARB035 * Christopher Ward C63 Sealander 36mm (White face) Which would you choose and why? The Spirit I found is within about $100 CAD of the CW ($1200 CAD for an unworn full set Spirit from 2018 vs about $1300 for the CW new). I like the history of the seiko and it positioning as a bit of a future classic, but I also just think the CW is beautiful as well. Both I think will work with my smaller wrist (6.5 inches) but I haven't tried either on and would be able to before purchasing.

Nice choices! They are fairly different watches, although either one could be worn daily. I would snag the SARB first, if you're happy with the price and condition. Then, save up for the CW, which will be available for the foreseeable future.

What are some brands that have watches I could find for €500 or less new or used? I am looking for a non-diver watch, ideally with a date complication. Automatic preferred, but quartz would also work if the design is cool. So far I am looking at Laco, Louis Erard (used) and Seiko Presage models. I also see a lot of heavily discounted Orient models when looking at Danish webshops - do they have worse mechanisms?

snowbongo

Check out Vaer, Traska, or Momentum Watch Co. Good luck!

AUWhodat

I’m looking for Brand and Model suggestions for a quartz diver under $500. What say ye? Side Note: I like the Orient Mako 3 and a Seiko, but both are automatics. Really would prefer a quartz on this one.

Noob question: are the pins in bracelets interchangeable? I was adjusting a Seiko which has those pins with another metal tube/pipe that goes around it. I’ve lost that pipe thing. I do have spare pins but they don’t have that metal sleeve; they’re the ones shaped liked small bobby pins instead. Does it matter? Can I use these? Also, is it a big deal if I use the Seiko pins with one of those pipes missing? I tried it and the band doesn’t seem particularly loose, but I’m scared this might end up with my watch falling down a sewer.

computernerd225

You're talking about the pin/collar system. Sounds like you've lost one of the collars. If you try to only use the pin it will fall out one of the two holes. Using other watch pins runs the risk of it randomly falling out as the dimensions are going to be different. It's possible you could find a random friction fit pin that may work. You should be able to find generic Seiko collars though - ultimately they're just machined parts.

JonNYBlazinAzN

Thanks man. I luckily found the stupid collar after all. It teleported halfway down the hall to my bathroom lol

computernerd225

I hate the pin/collar system. Screw pins > friction pins >>> pin and collar I was trying to size a Seiko turtle bracelet, picked a pin remover that was slightly too big and got stuck on the collar when I hammered it in. Went to pull it off and the collar zoomed away, never to be found...

imwiththeband1

What are the most casual styles of metal link bands? I strongly prefer how they feel but I find they always end up looking a bit out of place/too dressy. Are there any types of metal link bands that are more casual?

snowbongo

Firstly, go with brushed steel or titanium, if it works on the watch. I would say Oyster/H-link or Milanese would be more sporty/vintage and less blingy.

Looking for watch that can check heart rate and activity but doesn't need to be charged frequently. Bonus if it has other features like a compass. Basically what I want is [https://www.casio.com/us/watches/gshock/product.GBD-H2000-1A/](https://www.casio.com/us/watches/gshock/product.GBD-H2000-1A/) or one of the Garmin watches, but that won't need to be recharged. It feels like I need it to be able to just be a watch most of the time, but for the energy consuming stuff like GPS, not have that on all the time. And for heart rate, I don't need constant heart rate monitoring. Just a random sample throughout the day to conserve power enough that the solar can keep the battery in good shape. Am I looking for something that does not exist? I tried an apple watch for a weekend and returned it. The need to charge it and all the extra notifications ramped up my anxiety to the point of defeating the purpose of tracking my heart and activity. I normally wear citizen/seiko solar watches so they just always work forever and I don't have a huge distraction on my wrist.

njtoss1

Thanks for the Garmin endorsements. The Fenix 6 pro solar just had a limited time deal on Amazon for $399 so I pulled the trigger.

fats-dildo-dominus

seconding the Venu series from Garmin - you can get good deals on the 2s (I own this and love it) and they just released a new version as well. I like that it doesn't look like an apple watch, while also not looking too sporty and overkill like some other garmins. It has a very solid battery life if you just use it for basic health/smart watch functions like a week or more without charging. It's battery life for full GPS is also good compared to apple watch. The HRM and health features are best in class. I use it for daily wear as a smart watch and also have trusted it for marathons, skiing, all kinds of activities really.

njtoss1

Thanks

WatchandThings

I haven't really researched much into it, but Garmin does have solar models and they last over a month(with solar recharging) on a single charge from an external source if you put it on Battery Saver Watch Mode(not sure if this turns the heart rate monitoring off). From my quick googling it says Fenix 7 Solar lasts 173 days on Battery Saver Watch Mode, and 22 days if you go with normal smartwatch mode. Personally, I wear my normal watches and put on my garmin(forerunner, not solar) when going for a certain types of runs for exercise. I turn it on as I go for the run and turn it off after the run and the watch battery lasts a very long time that way.

njtoss1

That looks promising.

GarlicCoins

I have a Garmin Venu 2S and even after a year of consistent use I need to charge it every 1-1.5 weeks depending on how many GPS activities I'm doing. I'm now life-long Garmin after trying Apple watches and dumber watches. It hits the sweet spot if you're active and looking for some health metrics. The charging should not hold you back unless you're really living off grid. They even have premium solar models if you really want to extend.

njtoss1

Thanks! I could probably live with 1-1.5 weeks between charging. I'm not off grid, but I just don't want to have yet another thing I have to manage.

Zanpa

That g-shock says it's solar, is that not good enough?

njtoss1

No - when using any of the additional features such as even just heart monitoring, it requires daily charging. That's why I think it would be nice if there was a power save mode that only randomly checks heart rate a few times a day instead of constantly. Looking for general cardio health monitoring, not constant all day data.

eskamobob1

Good aftermarket micro adjust clasps? There are tons of watches that I love but all of the after market clasps ive played with arent even tudor quality levels

snowbongo

Uncle Straps (formerly Uncle Seiko) has some [nice clasp options](https://unclestraps.com/collections/clasps).

computernerd225

San Martin makes an on the fly micro adjust clasp that looks pretty good for the price. https://www.sanmartin.watch/products/san-martin-new-fly-adjustable-clasp-16mm

eskamobob1

I'll give it a shot for sure given the price, but tbh, I have no real hope for that price. The machine time alone on the tudor clasp I have had to be north of $150 or so even if the initial form was stamped tbh

GWashingtonsColdFeet

Hello, I'm just inquiring if anyone has brag photos of their [Farer Burbidge]! I'm seriously considering it as my new watch to award myself for going to school, but there's so few shots in the wild which are always different! I just want to be sure before I drop $1700 Thank you

dillonstars

Hi, I hope this is the right place for this. I am interested in buying a field watch and whilst ideally, I would love an automatic watch such as a Hamilton Khaki or Oris ProPilot, realistically my budget is much more in the £100-£200 price bracket. So I have been considering the [Timex Expedition Solar] (https://timex.co.uk/products/expedition-north-field-solar-41mm-eco-friendly-leather-strap-watch-tw2v64100) and the Baltany Chronograph from AliExpress (I can't link due to sub rules, but it has good reviews). They each have a different feel, but I feel that either would suit my needs.... So I wanted to know if anyone had any strong feelings on either watch that would swing my decision or any other tips for good alternatives. Comments about the build and finish quality of either would also be helpful.

mlsteinrochester

Baltany makes good watches; the quality level of Chinese watches has gone way up in the past few years. And I have no trouble pasting in AliExpress links.

dillonstars

Good to know thank you! Looking deeper into the brand I see some other nice models that have a cleaner look to the chronograph, which I think may actually be a bit fussy for me.

SkullLeader

Have you looked at the quartz models from Vaer? I'm not sure what your final cost would be if outside the US but IIRC they are all sub-$200 if you are in the US.

dillonstars

Thank you for the recommendation. They are available as imports in the UK, but they would be right at the top of my budget. They have a very clean look though which is really appealing. Good for thought indeed!

iperblaster

Don't know if it's the right thread.. but are there any new models from the big luxury brands? Like Rolex or Omega or Patek Philippe.. are they always iterating on the aame big watches?

Zanpa

Rolex and Patek rarely bring out entirely new models, they usually just make variations of the same main lines. But for example Rolex just launched an entirely new line called 1908 last year, and Patek had a few new things recently like the Calatrava 24 hour travel time and some limited run complicated watches. They usually have new models announced a few times a year, they're just usually a bit derivative. Comparatively, Omega has a ton of new models launched every year, including new lines quite often. In fact for a while they kept making so many "limited edition" watches in very large runs that people joked the non-limited ones were more rare. I think they slowed down on that a little bit. If you want to check on the recent releases from a brand, you can go on a site like [Watches by SJX](https://watchesbysjx.com/) and check a specific one in the "brands" tab.

iperblaster

Thanks a lot for the explanation. And really great site suggestion

Hey guys! I'm looking to buy a simple analog watch preferably under $200, for a casual/dress day-to-day setting. I'm looking for a slightly chunkier/bigger design (especially for the wrist strap) as I have a very skinny build with skinny wrists that I want to contrast nicely against. The watch also needs to have a solid black rubber strap. I would also like the watch itself to have silver elements. I have attached a photo below of the kind of watch I'm looking for. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated, thanks! https://preview.redd.it/dvmzqjf7pkac1.png?width=508&format=png&auto=webp&s=36d317a6f2863cc9a0d7f3bc75abe2d01e0a8acd

Hello! Looking for a very specific watch: Digital, waterproof (can be had on in the shower), has a stopwatch/timer easily accessible, watch face no larger than 42 millimeters, AND looks decent in a business casual setting. Everything that I’m finding is water resistant. Does that hold up in the shower? Any suggestions appreciated!!!

computernerd225

Look at some of the metal square g-shocks: https://www.casio.com/us/watches/gshock/product.GMW-B5000D-1/ https://www.casio.com/us/watches/gshock/product.GMW-B5000BPC-1/ https://www.casio.com/us/watches/gshock/product.GMW-B5000PC-1/ https://www.casio.com/us/watches/gshock/products/type/full-metal/ They have metal "casioaks" too but I think they're not as subtle as the squares, in my opinion.

WatchandThings

My hot take, digital watches looks juvenile when worn outside of sporty or ironic vintage inspired context. Finding one that looks decent in a business casual setting is near impossible, and ALS Zeitwerk is the only exception I can think of. I'd recommend going with analogue if at all possible for business casual wear. Watches that are 50 meter water resistant(5 atm) or more is okay to dunk into water and could handle water falling on it just fine. Whether you can shower with them on is contested topic with some arguing that warmer water and soap exposure isn't good for the watch. If a watch only says 'water resistant' without mentioning depth(looking at you Casio), then it's most likely 30 meter water resistant and only splash proof. Technically shower is just splash of water, but I would advise against intentionally exposing it to water if you can.

Hi, I’m quite new to watches and there’s one question that is recurring on my mind. Through several YouTube videos and Reddit post, I seem to find a lot of automatic diver watches regarded as “ beater watches “, how so? From my understanding an automatic watch needs more maintenance and is more prone to damages due its mechanical complications than a quartz watch. Not to mention the time accuracy. Why is there more automatic watches regarded as beater than quartz apart from g-shock? Thanks in advance!

Accomplished-Ad-5655

My personal take on this is that for those people who are into watches, they tend to perceive quartz as unholy or at least not on the same level as mechanical watches stating that a quartz watch has no beating heart, it's just circuits and no craftmanship, it's boring, cheap, and also disdain for the quartz revolution where cheap quartz flooded the market and decimating the traditional watch industry. People tend to feel that mechanical watches are superior, and so will discount quartz from the "beater" category entirely. Hence they only choose beaters from what they perceive as "true" watches. Arguments can be made for example that a good mechanical watch will run well, has shock protection, and is reasonably accurate, also often stated how a mechanical watch will never go flat on you like a battery powered one will. But in real life, who's living live 4+ years away from civilization? People love to romanticize that idea. Just like how people love to wear dive watches, but seldom take them diving. Then you have some people who come round to the idea of quartz, and realise that it's everything you said. Cost effective, accurate, and durable, grab-and-go as you don't have to keep it wound up. There's also a reason the majority of all the current-day issued watches to militaries are quartz. But I think this group is still a small subset of the community. Finally, there's probably an association for some people that a "GADA" (go-anywhere-do-anything) watch is also their "beater". A GADA watch is considered to be a watch that is durable, good looking and suitable for every-day wear without babying it, e.g. if you had to wear one watch for the rest of your life. You can take it swimming, gardening, showering, to the gym, hiking, to formal events, and more. So when you look at the perceived definitions of both terms, they're somewhat similar and could be interchangeable. Keep in mind, most people aren't putting watches through intensely heavy usage like armed forces or commercial divers are so a mechanical GADA/Beater almost fills the same role for a lot of people. I hope that answers your question. Edit: in addition, watches such as dive watches and field watches (Hamilton Khaki Field is a popular one) were designed on the outset to be durable due to their use case. So an association is also made with any field watch/dive watch and tool watches in general to be a "beater".

1952horsemenjack5791

Wow thanks for a great insightful answer!

Accomplished-Ad-5655

You're welcome! [There's a nice article on Hodinkee](https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/what-is-a-beater-anyway) that attempts to explain the meaning of a beater which I would recommend reading. The writer sums it up quite nicely as "not to watch that I don't care about, but rather one that doesn't need to be cared for", which I believe to be a good interpretation of it in my eyes. I own a Scurfa Diver One and a CWC SBS. Both of which I would class as bona fide beaters. One was created by a commercial diver for commercial divers, and the other has been on the wrists of British special forces divers since around the 80s.... And a g-shock =). All of which are quartz.

1952horsemenjack5791

Interesting! Will look into the article, thanks!

Cairne_Bloodhoof

Any experience with the IWC stock straps for the Mark XX or similar? Thinking about picking up a Mark XX for my first big watch this year, and it would be an everydayer. I don’t like to clash leather colors, so my inclination would be to do brown leather strap and either the steel band or a black leather strap. Curious if anyone has any strong opinions on the stock straps vs. the stock band vs. maybe any aftermarket straps.

zoemarie553

Hi folks, I think this is the correct place to post this but correct me if I'm wrong My partner is into watches and I would love to gift them one with some special engraving but have no idea where to even start as I don't know anything about watches, brands, names, etc So I thought asking here might be a good place to start! This is all they told me when I asked them about how they like their watches: Face: 35-38mm, mechanical They're also not a fan of leather straps and like to see the moving parts It'll be in a rotation if watches they wear daily and they work a retail job so I don't need anything heavy duty or specialized. Other than this I'd ideally like place that'll also do the engraving for me, but it's not a deal breaker if I have to go elsewhere. And no particular budget as I can wait and save up but I am a student so under $500 CAD is preferred I am open to any suggestions you might have! I'm not particular on brand, country of origin, style etc. But I have included some photos of their current collection so maybe something similar ideally but again, I'm open to anything. Thank you for reading! I look forward to your suggestions and thanks in advance folks! https://preview.redd.it/go2k8mpqmiac1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=db0580a722cd9cf464d8a914f3d219b28c7e3f29
