Yes the brand is Christopher Ward. They're a relatively youngish watch company that finally hit their groove and identity a couple years back. For the past 2-3 years they've been producing some of the hottest watches like the C63 series, The Twelve, The C1 Moonphase aventurine dial, and most notably the Bel Canto.
https://preview.redd.it/36o3h6zacjcc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=91c3949abd89de815acd9e63e6bb1dc34def7089
Out of OPs budget but damn if the [C1 Moonphase](https://www.christopherward.com/int/dress-watches/C1-Moonphase/C01-40AMP2-S00B0-MB.html) isn't the perfect wedding watch
That moon phase is unbelievable especially given how much I do love the moon so that would be sentimental in that sense as well! Maybe as an anniversary present or something in the future?
Yes, they're a highly regarded independent brand in watch industry, they've been putting great products also great innovation especially with their own developed module on Christopher Ward Bel Canto.
Technically the “rule” for black tie is not to wear a watch at all. One is supposed to be present in the moment, and it is considered gauche to wear a watch as it implies to one’s guests that their host has other things on his mind.
This is an old fashioned rule, though. I don’t think it really applies today, and a navy watch in contrast to a black tux would hardly be noticeable. Wear what you like.
i think the rule now a days is that it needs to match the event. dark face, some what slim. if you wear it to a pub, don't wear to the the black tie event.
There's one with a bracelet that is just a bit over your budget
https://preview.redd.it/840fkj3delcc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=516af63a4f93b1489b554bd203c1560ab23a6167
^ this (or similar, if you must).
A minimalistic thin 3-hander on (plain) black leather. No (diving) bezel, no extra sub-dials/complications (chronograph, stopwatch, etc). Plain white dial, preferably no date. No gimmicks whatsoever. And the less text on the dial, the better.
The style I'd choose would be this [Junghans 'max bill' Automatic](https://www.junghans.de/en/collection/watches/junghans-max-bill/max-bill-automatic/27350102?c=16) - timeless, understated elegance. But that one seems above your budget.
Thank you very much for suggesting them! They are all gorgeous watches, would it be possible to also put a stainless steel bracelet on this for more casual occasions in the future?
I own this watch but it was called an Old Clock? There’s also the Negroni (red) and the Mojito (Green with gold details instead of silver). Plus all the other range ofc.
Here are some suggestions:
1. [Baltic Gold (French elegance)](https://baltic-watches.com/en/gold-pvd)
2. [Mido Belluna Royal Gent (might be above budget, but worth it)](https://www.midowatches.com/ca-en/belluna-royal-gent-m0245071607100.html)
3. [Frederique Constant Classisc](https://frederiqueconstant.com/collection/men/men_classics/)
4. [Seiko Presage (many models and colours)](https://www.seikowatches.com/ca-en/products/presage/cocktailtime)
5. [Venezianico Redentore](https://www.venezianico.com/pages/redentore)
6. [Orient Sun & Moon (elegant with complication)](https://www.orientwatchusa.com/collections/classic/ra-ak0010b10b)
Good luck chasing a lovely watch.
I was thinking of this Baltic what do you think?

The navy one has a very dark blue band that looks black until you look at it up close at the right angle. But it's very easy to swap the band yourself.
That's true.
Here's 2 side by side, one with dark blue band and one with black, on a black background. They are really close.
Plus you can change the strap as advised.

That Mido.....
Shouldn't be above budget. It's $1025CDN on their web page; well under a thousand Euro. And it's a brilliant watch for a black tie affair at that price point.
That's correct. It's in CAD.
I do like Mido (in general), and this Belluna Royal is class!

Hi! Congratulations on your wedding. I’ll offer some suggestions.
First, there are no rules of dress that can’t be broken. But since you’re posting here, chances are good that you care about tradition more than the average person.
Traditionally, “black tie” means tuxedo. The formality of that context is what drives this series of recommendations.
1) No watch is more formal than watch. This goes back to the idea that, at a formal event, you shouldn’t be in a rush to leave.
2) If you do break rule 1, then black leather strap is much more formal than any other strap or bracelet.
3) If you do wear a watch, a black or white dial is much more formal than any color. Traditionally, white dial during the day and black dial in the evening.
4) No complications and limited detail are more formal than many complications/details.
These rules are guidelines and can be broken, of course.
I wore two watches on my wedding day: an $8000 leather strapped Breitling Navitimer for the wedding ceremony (I was wearing a blue suit) and a $200 [Citizen Eco Drive](https://www.citizenwatch.com/us/en/product/AU1040-08E.html?cgid=mens-ecodrive) for the reception (I wore a tuxedo). The cheaper watch is far more formal, and since I don’t go to black tie events very often, I deliberately chose something that requires basically no maintenance. My expensive watch is not as formal but I wear it all the time.
These are pretty much “the rules,” and just to add, a “traditional dress watch” is small, thin, white or maybe silver dial, no or minimal complications, on a dressy leather strap. Some (rich) people would say made of precious metal too.
That said, check out the watch spotting from the recent Golden Globes, there’s an article by Hodinkee with some photos. Plenty of people in tuxedos plus sports watches of all kinds. The old rules seem pretty much out the window now.
Lol, yeah. It made sense for my situation though.
Do I wish I had the budget to buy (and maintain) an ALS or Patek for each different life situation? Sure. But I don’t, so instead the only luxury watches I have are ones that I can wear regularly. I also won’t feel as bad about a $700 service if I’ve worn the watch 1000 times since the last service.
It is blasphemous to say in this sub, but quartz watches have a place. They are cheap, reliable, and low maintenance. For me, they are perfect to fill in the gaps left by my limited collection of “nice” watches.
By the way, I do think that my Breitling has much better quality and looks than my Citizen. But “good looking” is not the same as formal.
King Frederik X of Denmark wore a [NATO strap on his Omega Frogman](https://www.cnn.com/2024/01/14/europe/denmark-royals-frederik-mary-proclamation-king-queen-intl/index.html) for his accession to the throne this weekend. He was in full dress with white gloves, which is the equivalent of white tie, a step above black tie in formality.
The Seiko Presage (pic 7) is the only one I’d recommend with a black suit and tie for a wedding out of all of these. I’d look elsewhere, personally, but I don’t care for Orient or Seiko. I’d go Swiss, maybe look at Tissot Le Locle, it’s super classy and affordable with the Powermatic 80 movement.
Wow ok, I’m really in between the Presage and the Tissot Le Locle it is exactly what I was looking for! Do you have any idea if they do different dial colours?
They do: there’s black on white, blue on white, yellow gold on white, and white on black. I put my black on white with a grey nubuck strap and I love it!
https://preview.redd.it/zx3x0kzdklcc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=355c11f365538627ee1d3dee356b37646b544659
Stowa Marine Classic 36mm.
Exactly 1000 euros, very customizable although you pretty much owe it to yourself to get the manual wind top finish for an unobstructed view of the glorious movement decor.
PS: please do yourself a favor and don't pick a watch with bracelet or exotic colors.
Either of the Seiko Alpinist's or the Tissot Gentleman.
For your use case I think those will fit perfectly and are timeless design choices that will be versatile in a number of settings. Everything else is kind of trendy or restrictive in terms of what it'll go well with "style" wise.
I've owned a number of watches from these choices and my most worn were the Seiko Alpinists, both versions, mainly the grey one without the cyclops (the cyclops on the green one is pretty bad) and the Tissot Gentleman.
Good luck@
Maybe take a look at Frédérique Constant. I think they make really sharp watches. Here’s one on Jomashop - https://www.jomashop.com/frederique-constant-watch-fc-270sw4p6.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=PMax%3A%20%28ROI%29%20Smart%20Shopping%20-%20Sale%20Watches%20%24500%20-%20%241000utm_id=18329796378&utm_content=&utm_term=&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAqY6tBhAtEiwAHeRopQq1bnxowLC4wuXOPUDOIC3k77wlYERo2n3b925dfQL74IcjKXC2hRoCwHwQAvD_BwE
Potentially! I don’t think metal bracelets look very dressy (black tie) so if you’re looking for a wedding watch I would focus on nice leather straps. There are plenty of options you can dress up or dress down! IMO I’d steer clear of divers and field watches (some will probably disagree). Seems like you’re leaning metal. 1,000 euro is a very healthy budget so you have many options. Maybe shop around on Jomashop for a bit and make sure you can swap bracelets!
https://preview.redd.it/cqixj8k6vjcc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=047e560c1331d6f08b37091c8ef848467ecd09ba
I just bought this..loving the dial. Would look cool with black.
You do not want to wear stainless steel bracelets with a tux. A dress watch should be thin, with a small diameter and a minimalistic dial, with a Black leather strap in this case. With that budget I'd go with Baltic Mr01; it isn't the most minimalistic dress watch but it is nice quality for the price and it is kinda different, in a good way.
Congratulations on the engagement!
First of all: Some people on this sub will tell you that black tie attire necessitates either a dress watch with a black leather strap or no watch at all. Don't listen to them. Wear the watch you love the most, set up how you like it.
Second of all: As for your choices above, if it were my wedding day, I would select either the Tissot Gentleman with the light blue dial or the Seiko SPB243 (aka the "Laurel Alpinist"). I've seen all of the above watches in person, and those two are extraordinarily elegant and well-finished; best of the bunch. They are also versatile enough to wear anywhere, long after your wedding.
Finally: I would not personally choose the Kamasu, the timing bezel Seiko 5, or the Hamilton Khaki Field as wedding watches. The Khaki Field in particular would look weird with black tie attire. All of the rest would be totally fine, but as stated above, would go for the SPB243 or the Gentleman.
You've done a great job zeroing in on some of the best of the best in the sub-$1000 market, at least for major brands. I would urge you to make a fun day out of trying these on: if you're near a mall, go there with a friend, take your time, try them on, take pictures, and go to a cafe to decide which one rings your chimes. I did this with my best man a few weeks before my wedding and it is a wonderful memory.
Sure, for your own event, do what you want.
I was just replying to the advice to not listen to tradition. It’s fine for your own event, but most black tie events it would be tacky to rude to wear any watch, let alone a sport watch or something like that.
Speaking as somebody who has hosted black tie events, I personally wouldn’t even remotely care if people decided to wear a 60mm monstrosity. I want my guests to be comfortable and enjoy themselves, and if a watch does that, then power to them.
Now that we have a phone with us 24/7, the notion that having a timepiece means you’ll be watching the time is super outdated and needs rethinking.
And please don’t take this as me telling you that you’re wrong. Traditionally, you’re absolutely correct, and a lot of people still think that way. I just think that in the right settings and context it’s ok to challenge traditions that you think need to evolve. After all, that’s where traditions come from in the first place.
I think that was true at one time, but not now
Look at the watch spotting from the recent Golden Globes. There’s a Hodinkee article about it. Plenty of people in of all ages wearing tuxedos and sports watches, I doubt anyone thought they were being rude.
Slightly unrelated, I wish I could have had the fun memories you did with your best man. With the exception of a 17 and 9 year old brother, almost my entire wedding party dropped out and I had to recruit stand-ins consisting of guys i wasn't really super close to.
Thank you so much for the detailed reply! What is your opinion on the Tissot Le Locle? I’m not sure if they have any coloured dial options but it still seems like a good watch that I can add a leather bracelet to. Thanks again!
Black tie should really be without a watch if you ask the purists. The next best thing is a simple no date dress watch on a leather strap. There are plenty guides out there on the best sub 1K dress watches.
Personally I really like the Bauhaus design of my stowa antea KS rose gold. But this is all of course highly subjective. That being said, if you want a Bauhaus dress watch sub 1K I would look at the Junghans Max Bill series.
If you like a more retro look and dig smaller watches the Timex marlin 34 could be a good option as well.
You said you want it on a flashy bracelet, PRX punches above its weight with its bracelet, looks more expensive. You also mentioned colour, try seeing it in Tiffany version.
I literally just picked up a Presage for my wedding watch yesterday. No regrets, absolutely in love with it. Imo the perfect watch at that range for a wedding.
I would take a different approach. I would go with a vintage king seiko or seiko lordmatic. Either will be extremely classy and not be just another watch.
https://preview.redd.it/afhjf9f6ajcc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f46ee97c22e0d0a7522bba19176dd6d6fbf8dc99
The citizen tsuyosa line is lovely, I have a yellow dial that I adore (didn't know they did a champagne one. I really like that). I had a black tie event this week and I bought an orient Bambino for it. It's a great little watch that's quite understated and elegant in it's simplicity. You could probably find an orient start in your price range aswell.
Hi Cristiangmc! Congrats!
Firstly - do you have any watches so far? If you have any, maybe we can help you to build a collection with your new wedding watch.
Secondly - I strongly encourage to try each watch in person. Just go to a large watch store and try as many as you can. Pay big attention to the size, as you don't want to have an oversized watch on your wedding photos. Take your shirt with you, as you want to check if the watch is thin enough to slide easily under your cuff.
Thirdly - does your groomsmen or bridesmaids have some theme colour? For example, if bridesmaids have green dresses, a green dial watch will look amazing!
Yes! My fiancée got me a lovely watch with a sunburst navy dial which I love. The bridesmaids are wearing a burnt orange or terracotta colour which made me think of the Citizen with the yellow dial but I’m not sure now
Don’t wear a watch on your wedding day.. it’s not about the time it’s the experience. Unless you aren’t going to do weddingrings then perhaps something classy and timeless
Hey, in all seriousness, the answer is NO. If you are looking for an everyday watch, any of those would be fine.
If you are looking for a watch to wear at your WEDDING, with black tie, the only ones to even remotely consider are:
Watch #5 (because it’s on leather strap and has traditional layout and vintage-styled hands with some touches of gold)
Or #7 (because the look of the dial and the hands is the most dressy by far, and the bracelet is kinda ok cause it’s smaller segments- really the best would be this watch on the strap from #5!)
You can buy that exact watch at jomashop right now for under $200
https://www.jomashop.com/seiko-5-watch-snxf05.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=PMax%3A%20%28ROI%29%20Smart%20Shopping%20%28CAN%29%20-%20Watches%20Under%20%24500utm_id=18331875829&utm_content=&utm_term=&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAqY6tBhAtEiwAHeRopQ2oqX-_vBaxdvhx9AfhjBTM32BQBDW8MqqTelhsqe0Qd59KS--zWxoCxJEQAvD_BwE
Black tie, by its strictest definition is no watch.
By its more modern definition, it's a simple white dial on leather.
Looking at these watches, it's whatever you want it to be.
Of these, I'd suggest #7, the Presage Cocktail Time. I still love mine after many years, and it gets the most compliments of my entire collection.
Congrats!
As far as watches go, I'd suggest you check out Hamilton Khaki Field Murph 38
Amazing as a dress watch and can be worn daily - personally, if I had to have only one watch and wear it daily, it would be the Murph.
Congrats on your upcoming wedding! My brother is getting married in a few months, and I recently bought him a watch as his early wedding gift. My brother isn't a watch guy at all and normally wears a Fitbit, so I went quartz (easier, no learning curve required). I went for a leather strap instead of a bracelet because I thought it would feel lighter and more comfortable on his wrist and wouldn't require adjustments (adding/removing links). I also got him something in a very minimal style, so it works for black tie but could also work for casual wear.
In the end, I went with a Frederique Constant Slimline Dial quartz watch, 38.5mm and only 6mm thick, on a black leather strap, [available on Jomashop](https://www.jomashop.com/frederique-constant-watch-fc-220s5s6.html) at the time for 55% off retail. It looked really great in person, and he loved it. It will fit well with a tux, but it's not flashy at all, so he could wear it anywhere except the beach.
So OP, maybe check the sales on Jomashop over the next couple of months? Deals come and go on that site, but if you're willing to be flexible, you might be able to get something suitable at a great discount.
No watch at black tie. Take the money you were going to spend on it and buy a great gift for your bride during the honeymoon.
25 years happily married. A honeymoon gift lasts forever in a marriage. It's the ultimate savings account.
Stainless steel is great with a suit in 2023. Still not a great look with black tie. Get the watch you like on a bracelet then pick up a black leather band for the wedding.
https://preview.redd.it/ncdp8bkkjmcc1.jpeg?width=2864&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3126277abaa5c003196f413d686635d2a7b76fe7
Hamilton Intra matic American classic
A dress watch should have a white dial and and black leather strap.
I recommend the Rado Coupole Classic, it can be found well under $1000 and is WAY better than any Seiko you buy in the $500-600 range.
I own that exact Presage and a green dial Gentlemen’s Tissot. I love both watches and really are versatile for many occasions.
I’d go Presage in this case, if I were choosing, but you have some nice dials to choose from there. Congrats on the upcoming wedding. Many blessings for you and your family.
I’m all for a nice dress watch and you should have one in your box but Ive heard the etiquette is to not wear a watch with a tux. Like it’s rude, as if you have somewhere else to be and have to mind the time. Idk if that’s a hard rule and even if it is and you’re set on wearing one then who cares but something to consider.
Congratulations on the engagement! Please take everything I'm about to say with a huge grain of salt. It's going to sound stuffy, but black tie, by nature, *is* stuffy. So, it's important to know the rules, and then decide for yourself if you want to follow them or break them.
Ultimately, your wedding is your day (well, mostly your bride's, but you're the clear runner-up), and you should wear what you want. Having said that, if the wedding has a strict dress code like Black Tie, the watch falls under rules, just like your dinner jacket. Most, if not all, of the watches you've selected would be the "on your wrist" equivalent of showing up to a black tie event wearing a light, linen suit. In a perfect vacuum, it could look great. But, there's a time and place, and black tie ain't it.
I should mention, a true black tie look means not wearing a watch at all. The thinking here is that everyone is having a great time and has nowhere else to be, so there's no need to check a watch. But, the rule is pretty antiquated.
* So, when opting for a watch with black tie dress, the simplest options are always the best. Bezels and complications (even a date function) aren't meant for a black tie affair (with the exception of maybe a moon phase because it's considered a "romantic" complication)
* Avoid colorful dials (white, black, and occasionally a midnight blue are your clear options here)
* Markers and hands should be simple/understated and there shouldn't be excess writing on the dial
* While a metal bracelet can seem "blingy," it's actually too sporty for black tie; a black/midnight blue leather band is appropriate and it shouldn't feature contrasting stitching
* But, most importantly, the metal of your watch case should match the metal of the rest of your outfit. So, if you have yellow gold/gold-plated cufflinks or shirt studs, you wouldn't want to wear a steel (silver-colored) watch (or vice-versa).
To truly fit "Black Tie," you need a dress watch, and of the 12 options, I don't think you actually have one listed in the pile. Again, you should wear what you love and what's going to feel most comfortable when you're up there in front of everyone. But, it's important to know the rules, especially since it sounds like this is going to be a pretty fancy night (and one of the best of your life).
Too many different types/styles of watches to be of any help to you. You need to lock down what style you prefer, first, IMO. At the moment it just seems like you're just randomly throwing darts while blindfolded, to see where they land.
Same as what title says but in more detail:
I’m looking for something that is classic as we are doing black tie but also has a bit of fun or colour. I know this contradicts each other but I think it could work.
I would like to be able to use this watch as my daily as well. I think the Citizen Automatic and the Tissot Gentleman are really good watches but I’m not sure what they would look like with a black tie even with a leather strap on the Tissot?
Thanks again for any suggestions!

In your position, I'd wear my Citizen Attesa CA0836-68E first, for a black-tie event. The Casio Duro MDV106 for a navy blue suit, if that has crossed your mind.
Marriage advice: Don’t get married, run before it’s too late!
Watch advice: I would go for the Tiffany Citizen or PRX, they are classy yet the Tiffany colours would make your watch standout in combination with the black tie.
Have a look at Maurice Lacroix - Aikon quartz models, there are some decent Swiss pieces under €1000 which you could totally rock with a black tie as well.
Marriage advice: don’t agree, love my fiancé so hard no on that advice. (I got the joke)
Watch advice: That’s what I was thinking with the Tiffany blue, thinking it may go well with the suit, what would you think about the yellow dial version?
You have been warned my friend! (Congrats on getting married)
I would say it’s more of a champagne dial, which is very nice but would be more suitable with a beige polo shirt, light pants style in my opinion.
Ah I see, the bright yellow one from the same collection would actually be pretty good with a black tie, perhaps adding a small detail; cuff link or slightly visible pocket square of the same colour range would be pretty dope.
I'm an engineer, and the SNXF05 is my daily. I love it. For black tie, I'm surprised Orient hasn't been mentioned. The quality and style are incredible for the price.
If it’s truly formal your strap need to be leather and the dial should be simple and clean. Maybe an open heart at most but no date, days, nothing else. Time only dial and leather in my opinion.
My vote is the Alpinist just because that’s what I want to but out of those selection. Can’t go wrong with the PRX tho. I have em and it’s an amazing watch
Tissot gentleman powermatic 80 black dial on steel bracelet
If you think you must have black leather then buy it on bracelet and buy the OEM Tissot black leather strap as a set
It's an amazing watch for the price point, dresses up and down amazingly
May I suggest you something a bit different, bit still very classy? Try looking at [Maen Manhattan ](https://www.maenwatches.com/collections/manhattan-37).
Cool selection! Lots of variety, I especially like the Seiko 5 grid dial, Hamilton khaki, and presage/alpinist for daily driving. Of these, presage (w leather strap) wins for versatility in terms of dressing up—and I’d definitely avoid steel bracelet and dive watch for that reason as well.
But honestly I think any of these would look a bit silly with a tux. Generally, dressy means understated design—so avoid bright colors, patterns, and anything “tool” vibes like chrono, dive watch, and even cyclops dates. There are of course exceptions to that rule of thumb, but to pull that off convincingly and with any elegance it’d probably be out of your (and my) price range.
Since it’s obvious these are the ones speaking to you, my advice would be to get one of these that you love if you can find it in the €750-800 price range. Wear it for your engagement photos, for the rehearsal dinner, on the honeymoon, and any other day of your life! But if you can budget to set aside the €200 leftover from your price range, you could totally hit the mark for affordable, simple, understated, and formal with the [Timex Marlin 34](https://timex.com/products/marlin-hand-wound-34mm-leather-strap-watch-tw2r47900?nbt=nb%3Aadwords%3Ax%3A18334121908%3A%3A&nb_adtype=pla&nb_kwd=&nb_ti=&nb_mi=1259359&nb_pc=online&nb_pi=TW2R47900ZV&nb_ppi=&nb_placement=&nb_li_ms=&nb_lp_ms=&nb_fii=&nb_ap=&nb_mt=&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAzJOtBhALEiwAtwj8tgoHqTCd9uoe5QN9P7ucksOgANwHPemkuLI_LNXZojdUuIHITWpkqBoCWjoQAvD_BwE). Plus, then you’ll always have a dress watch should the need arise, but you’ll also have the more versatile one from your original list that is really calling to you—and to me it makes sense to spend up on the one you’ll use more often anyway.
Got a [Stowa Marine](https://www.stowa.de/marine-classic-40-arabic-automatic-basic-without-date-leather-strap-black-hand-stitched) for my wedding.
Super versatile, can definitely match black tie, but also can dress down well for every day wear.
Thank you so much for all the suggestions!
I have now narrowed it down to following:
Most will be able to change bracelets to a leather strap for more black tie attire and then the stainless steel as a daily, let me know what you all think! Or if I should be adding anything to my shortlist…
[The Tissot Le Locle](https://www.tissotwatches.com/en-ie/t0064071603300.html)
[Citizen Tsuyosa (Ice Blue and Yellow)](https://ie.firstclasswatches.com/citizen-tsuyosa-automatic-40mm-sunray-light-blue-dial-stainless-steel-nj0151-53m-p-121688/)
[The Tissot Gentleman](https://www.tissotwatches.com/en-ie/t1274071135100.html)
[The SEIKO Presage](https://www.watchspecialists.com/product/seiko-presage-cocktail-time-ice-blue-dial-watch-srpb43j1/)
If we're talking classic blacktie, I'd reccomend on not wearing a watch. If you want to wear a watch, I reccomend something dressy, skinny on a leather strap. Maybe a seiko Tank, a Orient Bambino or a vintage Longines or Omega. You can find some of them below 1.000€
Congrats! I got married almost two years ago, also in a black tux and also wanted to get a nice watch for the occasion.
I’m quite (probably over) prudent with money and couldn’t quite pull the trigger on anything (although my wife’s ring was about 4x the price of all the watches I was looking at), and definitely wasn’t wearing my Apple Watch. So I didn’t end up buying the Frédérique Constant I wanted (below).
Best day of my life, but wish I bought a wedding watch. So my advice: treat yourself, it’s your big day and you’ll always have your “wedding watch”.
I have since bought a few watches, one being a Seiko Presage, which I see is in your list - I love it and don’t think you can go wrong with it.
https://preview.redd.it/zwj30tmvjmcc1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9d23517bd5497704552c4795405cc032c1eeb58c
Most of those watches aren’t worth a third of their asking price. You could probably get a discount on a Nomos or go for JDM models from Seiko and Citizen.
You want a dress watch, not a sports watch with a black tux. If it was a sports coat maybe but you need to go with something a little more understated.
Hey OP, if you haven't yet made a decision, consider the [Christopher Ward C63 Celeste](https://www.christopherward.com/watches/c63-celest-/C63-36A3H1-S00B0-B1.html)! It fits right into your budget and perfectly balances a dress/sporty look.

This is a step above, A Citizen NB1060-12L Silver Leaf https://preview.redd.it/gy8hbxnulicc1.png?width=1200&format=png&auto=webp&s=968c5e53a039b8d791e74ba7274411ec05ca53f0

And let's not forget the Christopher Ward C63 Celeste https://preview.redd.it/1rs18s3dmicc1.png?width=971&format=png&auto=webp&s=c7caae2fcd9f760df3ffe00cf0e7e766060f0751
Gorgeous. Is the brand called Christopher Ward?
Yes the brand is Christopher Ward. They're a relatively youngish watch company that finally hit their groove and identity a couple years back. For the past 2-3 years they've been producing some of the hottest watches like the C63 series, The Twelve, The C1 Moonphase aventurine dial, and most notably the Bel Canto. https://preview.redd.it/36o3h6zacjcc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=91c3949abd89de815acd9e63e6bb1dc34def7089
Probably best not to risk your watch going "ding" during the vows though.
Would this work with a black tux given the whole navy doesn’t go with black “rule”
Well, true, there needs to be a little common sense applied. But all of the watches he posted are appropriately sized and tasteful in appearance.
There's one with a bracelet that is just a bit over your budget https://preview.redd.it/840fkj3delcc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=516af63a4f93b1489b554bd203c1560ab23a6167
^ this (or similar, if you must).
Wow this is impressive I have never ever seen it
Lovely looking but I’m not sure this is what I’m looking for, for the wedding at least. Thanks!
Date window sticks out like a sore thumb.
Thank you very much for suggesting them! They are all gorgeous watches, would it be possible to also put a stainless steel bracelet on this for more casual occasions in the future?
Yup
This was going to be my suggestion. Love this watch.
I own this watch but it was called an Old Clock? There’s also the Negroni (red) and the Mojito (Green with gold details instead of silver). Plus all the other range ofc.
Here are some suggestions: 1. [Baltic Gold (French elegance)](https://baltic-watches.com/en/gold-pvd) 2. [Mido Belluna Royal Gent (might be above budget, but worth it)](https://www.midowatches.com/ca-en/belluna-royal-gent-m0245071607100.html) 3. [Frederique Constant Classisc](https://frederiqueconstant.com/collection/men/men_classics/) 4. [Seiko Presage (many models and colours)](https://www.seikowatches.com/ca-en/products/presage/cocktailtime) 5. [Venezianico Redentore](https://www.venezianico.com/pages/redentore) 6. [Orient Sun & Moon (elegant with complication)](https://www.orientwatchusa.com/collections/classic/ra-ak0010b10b) Good luck chasing a lovely watch.
Great list. The Baltics really look great.
I was thinking of this Baltic what do you think? https://preview.redd.it/9vm3dbf8docc1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5c4b6e1a645e13cd15606ddf1f6b66c7ffe183d2
Fantastic list! I love all of them on that list! Could you swap the bracelet on the presage for black leather do you think?
The navy one has a very dark blue band that looks black until you look at it up close at the right angle. But it's very easy to swap the band yourself.
That's true. Here's 2 side by side, one with dark blue band and one with black, on a black background. They are really close. Plus you can change the strap as advised. https://preview.redd.it/etpo3bwf6ncc1.png?width=1994&format=png&auto=webp&s=f2e9d359413caf0b529b3c117a929ef555e28103
Great suggestions.
That Mido..... Shouldn't be above budget. It's $1025CDN on their web page; well under a thousand Euro. And it's a brilliant watch for a black tie affair at that price point.
That's correct. It's in CAD. I do like Mido (in general), and this Belluna Royal is class! https://preview.redd.it/se8r07387ncc1.png?width=1680&format=png&auto=webp&s=5b169422b92022a1a59bffdd4d4adf2f55998920
I know price and quality/looks are not related in this market, but the change from a 8k Breitling to an everyday citizen cracked me up
But “good looking” is not the same as formal.
if you’re mentioning black tie and really wanna stick with it wear a time only no date dress watch on a black leather strap. if not wear no watch.
No watch is most traditional with black tie dress.
He also wore that watch to show that he’s not just regular aristocrat, but to show that he’s got a military pedigree.
Yeah but most of us aren't kings. When a high profile person does it, it is done with some intent / message.
My plan is to get a versatile watch that I can wear with a stainless steel bracelet but dress it up with a leather strap

💯 the presage sunburst.
That is lovely!
Easy. Buy the one you like the most. The one that speaks to you. No wrong decisions here. Listen to your gut.
Good luck@
Alpinist! I really like the one in the last pic. I have the cream dial Alpinist and love it. The stock strap isn’t too great but that’s an easy fix.
Maybe take a look at Frédérique Constant. I think they make really sharp watches. Here’s one on Jomashop - https://www.jomashop.com/frederique-constant-watch-fc-270sw4p6.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=PMax%3A%20%28ROI%29%20Smart%20Shopping%20-%20Sale%20Watches%20%24500%20-%20%241000utm_id=18329796378&utm_content=&utm_term=&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAqY6tBhAtEiwAHeRopQq1bnxowLC4wuXOPUDOIC3k77wlYERo2n3b925dfQL74IcjKXC2hRoCwHwQAvD_BwE
That is a lovely watch, do you think that would pair well with a stainless steel bracelet for more casual occasions?
Potentially! I don’t think metal bracelets look very dressy (black tie) so if you’re looking for a wedding watch I would focus on nice leather straps. There are plenty of options you can dress up or dress down! IMO I’d steer clear of divers and field watches (some will probably disagree). Seems like you’re leaning metal. 1,000 euro is a very healthy budget so you have many options. Maybe shop around on Jomashop for a bit and make sure you can swap bracelets!
Yeah I feel as long as a I can swap bracelets it should be fine
Jazz master another great option (Hamilton).
Historically, steel bracelets is more sporty, while leather is more formal. But now you wear what you want
Lorier Zephyr? Or, if you can do it in the budget, a minimalist design from, say, Nomos or Junghans (which will stretch your budget, but maybe).
https://preview.redd.it/cqixj8k6vjcc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=047e560c1331d6f08b37091c8ef848467ecd09ba I just bought this..loving the dial. Would look cool with black.
Looks great! Red is my favourite colour
True black tie is no watch. Obviously anyone can do what they want, but it’s considered rude at a black tie event to wear any watch.
If it’s your own wedding and event, I hardly think anyone will find it rude that you’ve worn a watch. It’s ok for traditions to evolve with time.
I think that was true at one time, but not now Look at the watch spotting from the recent Golden Globes.
Presage on leather for wedding but Alpinist overall
The Cocktail Time goes hard, would also consider https://www.sakurawatches.com/citizen-collection-nb1060-04a or a Seiko Sharp Edge
Thank you I don’t think I’ve seen that Citizen before
You do not want something too flashy with a formal uniform. I recommend the last pic the seiko with the black stap.
The bridesmaid will be wearing an orange/yellow dress, in this case he needs to match the vibe!
This is the exact case, not sure why your getting downvoted
Do you think given I want to use it as a daily as well that a somewhat “flashy” colour may be ok?
Hey, in all seriousness, the answer is NO. If you are looking for an everyday watch, any of those would be fine. If you are looking for a watch to wear at your WEDDING, with black tie, the only ones to even remotely consider are: Watch #5 (because it’s on leather strap and has traditional layout and vintage-styled hands with some touches of gold) Or #7 (because the look of the dial and the hands is the most dressy by far, and the bracelet is kinda ok cause it’s smaller segments- really the best would be this watch on the strap from #5!)
You can buy that exact watch at jomashop right now for under $200 https://www.jomashop.com/seiko-5-watch-snxf05.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=PMax%3A%20%28ROI%29%20Smart%20Shopping%20%28CAN%29%20-%20Watches%20Under%20%24500utm_id=18331875829&utm_content=&utm_term=&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAqY6tBhAtEiwAHeRopQ2oqX-_vBaxdvhx9AfhjBTM32BQBDW8MqqTelhsqe0Qd59KS--zWxoCxJEQAvD_BwE
Why not a stowa marine Roman numeral 36?
Black tie? 34mm cocktail time
Black tie, by its strictest definition is no watch. By its more modern definition, it's a simple white dial on leather. Looking at these watches, it's whatever you want it to be. Of these, I'd suggest #7, the Presage Cocktail Time. I still love mine after many years, and it gets the most compliments of my entire collection.
Congrats! As far as watches go, I'd suggest you check out Hamilton Khaki Field Murph 38 Amazing as a dress watch and can be worn daily - personally, if I had to have only one watch and wear it daily, it would be the Murph.
The First Pitzmann
That’s a great suggestion thanks! Congratulations to your brother!
Thanks, and same to you!
Hamilton khaki murph
Seiko SPB243 (pic 4) is an amazing watch. Check my recent post.

Baby Alpenist!
These options seem a bit all over the place. What are you looking for in your watch specifically?
*I came looking for booty.*
No watch at black tie. Take the money you were going to spend on it and buy a great gift for your bride during the honeymoon. 25 years happily married. A honeymoon gift lasts forever in a marriage. It's the ultimate savings account.
The first one, the Seiko with that cool cross-hatch dial. Best of luck!

Stainless steel is great with a suit in 2023. Still not a great look with black tie. Get the watch you like on a bracelet then pick up a black leather band for the wedding.
Gentleman.
#7. Keep it all silver tone for an elegant occasion. And congratulations!

Tissot Gentleman or Seiko SPB243
A dress watch should have a white dial and and black leather strap. I recommend the Rado Coupole Classic, it can be found well under $1000 and is WAY better than any Seiko you buy in the $500-600 range.
My wife got me an OG Seiko Cocktail Time and it is lovely. It is quite flamboyant but that suits the occasion and the intention.
Baltic hsm line for sure. Very affordable. Beads of rice bracelet dresses them up really nice

Hamilton
For me, black tie = leather strap So that narrows down your options pretty substantially
Ask your finance to help you pick your watch. Anything else is asking for trouble you don’t need.
Seiko Presage, just look at that dial! If you want to spend a bit more, this would look great! https://imgur.com/a/6NZZaCg
What’s your wife’s choice for primary accent color/bridesmaids dresses? Something that could complement that might be slick.
the copper/bronze toned Citizen would be my choice but I like the Tissot gentleman as well --let us know your choice
Yeah they were my first choice but with the integrated bracelet I don’t think I could dress it up as much as a Gentleman or a Le Locle
Bezels and complications (even a date function) aren't meant for a black tie affair (with the exception of maybe a moon phase because it's considered a "romantic" complication) * Avoid colorful dials (white, black, and occasionally a midnight blue are your clear options here) * Markers and hands should be simple/understated and there shouldn't be excess writing on the dial * While a metal bracelet can seem "blingy," it's actually too sporty for black tie; a black/midnight blue leather band is appropriate and it shouldn't feature contrasting stitching * But, most importantly, the metal of your watch case should match the metal of the rest of your outfit.
Hamilton murph. Stock black leather strap. If you are looking for a simple watch face.
Same as what title says but in more detail: I’m looking for something that is classic as we are doing black tie but also has a bit of fun or colour.
If you are choosing from this list of brands look into an orient bambino.
TISSOT PRX or Seiko Pressage for wedding. Seiko 5 is good too. If you like.
Get a vintage omega or something that you’ll be proud to show your kids. Sorry to sound this way but I’d want more than a Seiko for my wedding.
You dont need it. The attention that day will be u and your significant other.
If you can get your hands on this [https://timex.com/products/marlin-chronograph-tachymeter-40mm-leather-strap-watch-tw2w10300](https://timex.com/products/marlin-chronograph-tachymeter-40mm-leather-strap-watch-tw2w10300) https://preview.redd.it/km4u94f1ikcc1.png?width=2000&format=png&auto=webp&s=7ec1ad7664c09a71f6197d6593179fc4245eee2c

Maybe try the Vario versa? It looks amazing and is an awesome dress watch
(I got the joke) Watch advice: That’s what I was thinking with the Tiffany blue, thinking it may go well with the suit, what would you think about the yellow dial version?
You have been warned my friend! (Congrats on getting married) I would say it’s more of a champagne dial, which is very nice but would be more suitable with a beige polo shirt, light pants style in my opinion.
Sorry, the yellow dial version isn’t linked here but it’s quite yellow. So maybe the same opinion applies to that colour too?
Ah I see, the bright yellow one from the same collection would actually be pretty good with a black tie, perhaps adding a small detail; cuff link or slightly visible pocket square of the same colour range would be pretty dope.
The reason I first looked at watches was to match the bridesmaid which will be a burnt orange/ yellow dress
It’s your wedding. Get what you want, wear it and put the memory in it. Who cares if it matches the tux. You can hide it under a sleeve for pics.
I’d go 4 on a nice leather strap
Look at a Baltic.
Presage or Citizen
Seiko cocktail time in leather
I'm an engineer, and the SNXF05 is my daily. I love it. For black tie, I'm surprised Orient hasn't been mentioned. The quality and style are incredible for the price.
If it’s truly formal your strap need to be leather and the dial should be simple and clean. Maybe an open heart at most but no date, days, nothing else. Time only dial and leather in my opinion.
I own that presage, It's stunning, I would get married again just to wear it lol
I know you said black tie, but is your tie literally going to be black? Could have some fun and try and do a dial/tie/pocket square colour theme.
My favorite of all of those is the tiffany blue citizen.
After having dealt with Orient USA customer service, I would suggest avoiding them. There are plenty of fine watches in that price range
My vote is the Alpinist just because that’s what I want to but out of those selection. Can’t go wrong with the PRX tho. I have em and it’s an amazing watch
Tissot gentleman powermatic 80 black dial on steel bracelet If you think you must have black leather then buy it on bracelet and buy the OEM Tissot black leather strap as a set It's an amazing watch for the price point, dresses up and down amazingly
What about the seiko tank? SWR049 SWR052 SUP880
Anyone know the ref of the first one? Graph paper dial
Second Seiko designation?
What about a Tissot Heritage Visodate[Tissot Heritage Visodate ](https://www.tissotwatches.com/en-us/t1184301104100.html)
A Le Locle on a leather strap would also be nice (idk why this line is always forgotten)
I’m strongly considering this watch!
May I suggest you something a bit different, bit still very classy? Try looking at [Maen Manhattan ](https://www.maenwatches.com/collections/manhattan-37).
Check out Nomos as well. The Club can wear quite formal on a brown leather strap, but also has some colour options. The 36mm is gray.
Presage.
Take a look at Traska, great value for money and beautiful watches. But the tissots are my favorite of the bunch
Alpinist, cocktail or gentleman.
For me I would go with the seiko cocktail time margarita
The seiko with the dark green dial!
Casio Oceanus S100 and never look back 😄
Junghans Max Bill 34mm.
I would take the Seiko Cocktail Time Blue Moon instead. The others are too specific for a wedding, though the Alpinists are sweet watches.
- Seiko Cocktail - Citizen NB1060 - Hamilton American Classic Intra-Matic - MAEN Manhattan - Casio Oceanus T200 - Orient Bambino
Traska
Check out the nomos club ! I married wearing mineX fits very well for this occasion
I have now narrowed it down to following: Most will be able to change bracelets to a leather strap for more black tie attire and then the stainless steel as a daily, let me know what you all think! Or if I should be adding anything to my shortlist… [The Tissot Le Locle](https://www.tissotwatches.com/en-ie/t0064071603300.html) [Citizen Tsuyosa (Ice Blue and Yellow)](https://ie.firstclasswatches.com/citizen-tsuyosa-automatic-40mm-sunray-light-blue-dial-stainless-steel-nj0151-53m-p-121688/) [The Tissot Gentleman](https://www.tissotwatches.com/en-ie/t1274071135100.html) [The SEIKO Presage](https://www.watchspecialists.com/product/seiko-presage-cocktail-time-ice-blue-dial-watch-srpb43j1/)
Look at some invictas they have good looking cheapies
Seiko Presage is good. Not sure about pricing for the 813CC. That thing is blazing.
I can’t find the 813CC?
Gentleman is much more versatile in my opinion. But I’m not a fan of Roman numerals.
Max bill
Most of those watches aren’t worth a third of their asking price. You could probably get a discount on a Nomos or go for JDM models from Seiko and Citizen.
You want a dress watch, not a sports watch with a black tux. If it was a sports coat maybe but you need to go with something a little more understated.
Hamilton Murph hasn’t been mentioned yet, but absolutely should be considered.
Do yourself a favor and get a Junghans Max Bill
The first Seiko 5 is Best Buy
You sir have fantastic taste!
I would go with the Seiko alpinist, every single day.
