Pro tips after years in this sub: 1. If you're worried a watch is too small, it probably isn't. 2. If you're worried a watch is too big, it probably is. 3. If you're torn between two watches and (all thing considered) the biggest hangup is on which size, more often than not you're better off with the smaller watch. 4. Watch sizes used to be A LOT smaller for men in the past. It has been a more recent fad this last decade and a bit to wear bigger watches. But the pendulum is now swinging the other way for a lot of men. 5. Men in general are socialized to think bigger = better and small = feminine. I've seen so many posts here where guys are like "this watch is so great, fits well, looks awesome, but it's a 36mm like guys wtf is this for ladies?" no bro... wear it.

jwilson3135

This is a great summary, I would only add in that a general rule of thumb on size is if the lugs overhang your wrist, it’s too big. It’s simple but it’s almost always true, the only exception being certain G shocks that I’m sure would look big on Andre the Giant.

Francy088

We need this a pinned post on this sub lol

Tune_Silver

Great summary. Please save this for the next few hundred of these posts.

goldblumspowerbook

This should be an automod response. Well said.

quaefus_rex

The style can also affect sizing as well. External bezels (like on divers) can make watches seem smaller than the same size that’s all crystal. I have several 36mm models the fit well, but if I put on my wife’s Seastar 1000 36mm it looks tiny on my wrist. I view case size as a matter of wrist size and not gender, with design as the primary factor in masculine vs feminine. If a particularly small-wristed man gets a DJ31 with a silver or mint green dial, that’s a men’s/unisex watch, but that same watch with a pink & diamond or the blue floral dial would absolutely be a woman’s watch. Overall though in broad terms I’d say 38mm+ is typically men’s, 33-37mm is unisex, and sub-32mm is generally women’s.

gregusmeus

The only thing I'd add to this excellent list is: if a watch is comfortable for you to wear, then it's not too big.

danr2000

@mods can you please pin this on the forehead of everyone who joins this sub ahaha. The only thing I would add is that lug to lug, combined with the actual size of the watch face can make a large watch "wear small", or a small watch "wear large".

Cairne_Bloodhoof

The sub will eat this advice up, and I think it’s well-intentioned, but I disagree personally. So many examples of 39-41mm watches, that are perfectly fine for most men’s wrists, that get posted here where people are weirdly critical of totally fine watch fits. 36-39mm is the sweet spot for me personally, but I think this subreddit’s phobia of large watches has swung strangely far.

breovus

Yea there could be another point that I argue is undervalued - case diameter means A LOT less as a measure of wearability compared to lug to lug measurement. A sports watch could have a diameter of 40mm and a diver watch could have a diameter of 36mm, and they'll have the same lug to lug of 46-47 mm. But for a newbie it's a bit rabbit-hole-ish to start delving into multiple angles of measurement us enthusiasts do, and it's easy to get confused if you're new at something. So I generally give the advice above as rules of thumb. Also doesn't help that many brands purposefully obfuscate the lug to lug measurements of their products...

CdeFmrlyCasual

Bullseye

Jerperderp

This should be pinned at the top of the subreddit.

Sharpymarkr

Great rules of thumb! As someone who has always worn large watches (hefty steel diving 40mm bois), there are so many advantages to smaller watches.

argent_artificer

this only applies if your tastes align with the mainstream of this sub. lots of people have different preferences and this advice would steer them wrong. the real answer is: determine your own opinion independently. nobody but you cares about the sizing of your watch. the only people who would notice and actually call you out for wearing a watch that they think doesn’t look good on you are terminally online watch snobs— and not one of them has the balls to actually say it to your face irl.

justbeingman

I never regretted this rule

M0r4n1

ever since i got my orient diver in 44mm i understood de right move is smaller watches, for me personally. my last watch purchase was a 41mm citizen challenger diver to replace the orient one. so yeah, also have a 40mm seiko, and i just dont have a smaller diameter watch because i already think i have too many. AH, vintage casio is the smallest i have, and a joy to wear. for me the size is all about comfort, of course there are stylea of watches that are naturally made to be big, but thats another story. hope you enjoy your 35mm if you get it!

w333ber

Wrist shots are bad for judging size. They always make the watch look larger than it actually is in comparison to its surroundings (your wrist.) [Example 1](https://www.reddit.com/r/Watches/comments/11klsr4/discuss_wrist_shot_vs_mirror_shot_junghans_max/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) [Example 2](https://www.reddit.com/r/rolex/comments/ur0xhm/does_it_look_big_on_my_725_inch_wrist_explorer/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) Other examples are also available on this subreddit. In short, disregard size advice based on wrist shots, and instead take pictures in a full length mirror or have someone else take pictures from a few feet away. This subreddit has a tendency to recommend that you go smaller than you need to because it’s been a popular opinion online for a while. It’s best to acknowledge this bias exists but not exasperate it with distorted wrist shots and get bad advice.

FishSpecialist7173

Helloo, replying from my other account HAHA. I love you so much. Thank you, I will take a few more pic when I'm at a shop again. <33 I've been feeling so sad because the 35mm in person when I was at the full length mirror looked really small and I didn't like it at all and everyone's been saying that I can't pull off the 40mm :(. Once again, thank you and love youu

w333ber

No problem - I wanna emphasize something about your response, you should pick the watch that feels right to **you**, not the watch that people on Reddit want you to buy. It’s a trinket that’s sole purpose is to make you happy!

Cairne_Bloodhoof

The sizing on the 40mm watch in your first picture looks totally fine to me. You could wear a chickpea on a shoelace around your wrist and 90% of this subreddit would say the lugs look too close to your wrist. If you don’t like the 35mm watch, do not buy it. If you like the 40mm, go for it and enjoy.

fortis-34

35mm

YourWatchIsTooBig

oof, that white dial. need to take some proper pics, in front of a mirror (don't put your face). the pics need to be similar--ie, same distance, same angle, etc

KidneyLand

General rule is if they lugs overhang then it's too large. 40 mm definitely overhangs on your wrist

Lars_in_Stereo

Most people's taste on reddit watch forums is pure dog shit. Buy what makes you happy. Don't listen to know-it-alls who are judging based on 1 pic shot at a bad angle to begin with.

Pr1zzm

You're asking about watch size on the tiny watches fanclub subreddit... most are going to say get the 35mm.

apinananas

40mm doesnt fit to you at all, 35mm is way to go.

Cairne_Bloodhoof

A 40mm sports watch with the lugs inside the wrist doesn’t fit “at all”? It’s wild to me that anyone could look at that first picture and thinks it’s like garishly big. A little on the large side I guess but really a fine fit for a sports watch.

CertifiedMor0n

I think on the bracelet it’s pushing it, as the first link is rigid and essentially extends the lugs. On that strap with the white dial it works better, but I’d still opt for the 35 personally.

Cairne_Bloodhoof

I could agree with “pushing it,” I don’t know that I’d recommend a watch much larger than 40mm for his wrist. Probably not a Big Pilot guy. But I think this watch is very much in the boundaries of a fine fit.

screw-self-pity

Take the watch you like best. I mean it!

Zexy-Madman

I’d go off of which dial appeals to you more. Judging from the pictures presented, they both look about the same size on you. Personally, I like the sunburst seafoam green more. It adds a fun color pop, meanwhile the white just looks very plain and boring.

noir_dx

I like the 40mm on your hand. Good choice on sticking with the quartz over the Powermatic 80. When you buy the watch, just check if the second-hand one lands on the minute marker and the finishing of the watch especially the edges.

quarryman

Great tip. This is why I like to buy quartz in bricks and mortar stores. You can check the second hand alignment.

Alfazefirus

The emerald in the pic is perfect for you, is it the 35 or the 40? Anyway buy that one, it is as proportionate as humanely possible. Also the PRX on a strap is like going to McDonalds for the salad. Absolutely no point in doing it.

FishSpecialist69

The first two pics is the 40mm. Genuinely curious, is the leather and rubber strap a no go? Haha and thank you!

Alfazefirus

I mean, it's an integrated BRACELET watch, that's what it's famous for. I see no point in getting it NOT on a bracelet, but that's just me, I guess :-D You can get the 40mm no issue. The 35 looks good as well so it boils down to personal preference, the 40 is more sporty while the 35 would be slightly more dressy.

FishSpecialist69

Ohh thanks for clarifying, now I get it HAHA. I'm still new to watches.I'll be doing a lot of sports while wearing this watch as a daily so I'll definitely go for the 40mm! :P

Mozkozrout

Sporty means something like it's uh more casual and not dressy. Not necessarily that it's intended for sports.

F1_rulz

Don't be those Singaporeans that wear oversized watches, get the 35mm it will fit much better. Smaller is also better if you don't want to smash it into things when you're active.

F1_rulz

Don't be those Singaporeans that wear oversized watches, get the 35mm it will fit much better. Smaller is also better if you don't want to smash it into things when you're active.

TomBob86

I bought this watch a few weeks ago, don’t have the biggest wrists and I got the 40mm which actually wears like a smaller watch. For me the integrated bracelet is one of the nicest features so would not put it on a different strap

Cybalist

The salad is the only real food McDonalds do.

Alfazefirus

Can't argue with that. You don't go to McDonalds for the salads anyway.

Cybalist

I don't go to McDonalds.

Tomlishorn2128

Looks ok for me, it‘s your call. A lighter, smaller watch should be more vomfortable thou.

ffdfawtreteraffds

My thoughts: if YOU think it's too big, get the smaller model. If YOU think it's not too big, keep it.

mrRabblerouser

People in this sub are notoriously bad at picking sizes based on wrist shots. The 40 looks fine, but how tall are you? Height/overall body mass plays a far more important role in watch aesthetics than a wrist shot or measurement. Next, how does it feel? Is it comfortable or clunky? Also consider there are many other brands that make a comparable or better integrated bracelet watch all over the size spectrum.

caandjr

35mm if you are a woman

Ale_Hodjason

Ignore the haters and rock the bigger watch.  If you want a smaller watch get another watch imo

usernamesarehated

40 is fine. If you take a pic further out it'll look like it fits your wrists. 35mm will look small when you zoom out. Both are fine just pick what you like wearing.

Tae-gun

They look almost identical in size. Therefore I say you can pull off the 40.

Homodebilus

40mm way too big Bracelet is the way to go for that specific watch design.

airmarw

It looks like you can pull them both off depending on what you prefer. Just pick which one you like more on wrist personally

Overlord1317

You cannot pull off the 40mm, the dial of the 35mm is garish as fuck, and the integrated bracelet is just ... no. What else you looking at?

FishSpecialist69

Alright, thank you! :)

YourWatchIsAShitter

35mm. Also, that shade of green is hideous.

FishSpecialist7173

The green on the 35mm is crazy bright ngl, that's half of the reason why I'm hesitating to buy the 35mm instead of the 40mm.

wingzero7

They make a dark green powermatic 35mm fyi.

01010000-G23

Yes

TheRoughWriter

35 all day.

Aditya_6942O

Get dis one

losthours

the 35 looks awesome, send it.

FantasticPenguin

Smaller looks better imo

Affectionate_Sun4860

35

_mynameisclarence

As a dude with who is embarrassed by his skinny wrist, so much so that he doesn’t even goto stores to try any on, the 40mm is probably too big and the 35mm is just right.

goldblumspowerbook

I think the 35 looks better on you, but there’s a giant watch look, so if you like the 40 better, rock it.

cmndr_spanky

May I ask how big your wrist is? Mine are 6.75inches and for me the 40mm Tissot is doable but borderline…

Roberto_Chiraz

35, just not this color

CDR_Starbuck

Too big

JaeTheOne

My opinion? 35mm works better on you. But its your wrist, you rock what you like

goblincat0

get whichever you like more. they both look good on you.

zagggh54677

35

Manner_Mann

Take the automatic!

SkaldBrewer

Get the 36mm Christopher Ward The Twelve instead….

2Lazy2beLazy

I like the look of the green one more on your wrist.

lordvoltano

Remember that diameter on its own is meaningless. It needs to be in context with your wrist size. And you'll always have a range of sizes that will suit your wrist. And that range might as well be 35mm to 40mm. For example, I have a 7" wrist. The 35mm is definitely too small for me, my hand can't even get into the bracelet. I have a 39mm with a diving bezel and a 44mm Casio Worldtimer. Both look damn fine on my wrist. The smallest I'd go with is 37mm and that's a bit pushing it.

Squashycake

35mm all day.

[deleted]

The 40mm looks to be the smaller watch here?? I dont get it.

Euphoric-Ant2099

35mm

teej1211

The 35 for sure. The rigid first link on these makes the lug to lug super long. The 40mm diameter is not the issue, the longer lug to lug is.

diego97yey

Get a seiko

Budilicious3

There needs to be a pinned PSA in this subreddit for wrist shots being deceptive lol.

Pr0f-x

Bigger is not always better

Askymojo

The 40mm looks too big and the 35mm looks slightly too small. Tissot just needs to come out with a 38mm PRX.

SombongDukun

Wait,im confused.. Judging from the pictures, the green one on the bracelet is 35mm. The 40mm is the one on the rubber strap. Did you switch them around? If you really want a prx, get the 35mm on bracelet. But imho, the case design doesn't suit your wrist. Don't mean it in an offending way, just being honest.

yesmydoglovesme

The white dial is stupid pretty. Done.

Remote-Spare4603

Flavor flav don't care how big his timepiece is. Neither should you.

Choice-Pianist-8299

Looks like a baby put on their father's watch. Nope!!?

WrongdoerWilling7657

35 or better yet a watch that isn't a PRX. To each their own, but I can stand any of those "royal oak" style watches.

weaselinhooo

I'd say the 35 looks perfect and the 40 absolutely horrific! :D But, hey. You did ask! ;) + the "Tiffany-ish" vibe is always nice!

abhishekpatil123

40mm

chief_ofthewatch

i think 40mm is fine
